Christian Apologetics - What Is Christian Apologetics?

Christian apologetics represents the serious and sustained engagement with ‘ultimate questions’ raised by a culture, people group, or individual aiming to show how the Christian faith is able to provide meaningful answers to such questions. Where is God in the suffering of the world? Is faith in God reasonable? Apologetics clears the ground for evangelism, just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus of Nazareth. …Evangelism…issues a personal invitation: ‘You are invited to the feast! Please come!’ Apologetics lays the ground for this invitation; evangelism extends it. Both are an essential part of the mission of the church

I believe deeply that "all truth is God’s truth." That historic affirmation means that when we discover and grasp truth in the world and in life we move closer to its divine Author. This approach relies on the Christian idea of God’s two revelatory books - the metaphorical book of nature and the literal book of Scripture. As an RTB scholar I have a great passion to help people understand and see the truth and relevance of Christianity's truth-claims. My writings and lectures at RTB focus on showing how the great doctrinal truths of the faith (the Trinity, the Incarnation, the Atonement, creation ex nihilo, salvation by grace, etc.) are uniquely compatible with reason. This approach reflects the historic Christian apologetics statement - "faith seeking understanding." I work to help myself and others fulfill Peter's words in 2 Peter 3:18: "But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever! Amen." As an RTB scholar I have a great passion to help people understand and see the truth and relevance of Christianity's truth-claims. • Biography • Resources • Upcoming Events • Promotional Items Kenneth Richard Samples began voraciously studying Christian philosophy and theology when his thirst for purpose found relief in the Bible.

The Case For Christ Review - The Christian Film Review

The film draws on Lee Strobel’s story which he documented in his best selling book The Case For Christ. It starts in a restaurant where a Christian nurse saves the life of Lee’s daughter and says Jesus is to thank, prompting Lee’s wife Leslie to began exploring Christianity and going to Church much to Lee’s disapproval. Lee decides to use his journalism skills to debunk Christianity, to prove that the resurrection of Jesus never happened. Lee’s journey begins as we see him asking questions, finding evidence, all the while from a bias perspective, always fighting Christianity right through to the very end until he cannot fight it any longer.

As Solomon warned, “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecc 12:12). There is no way to read everything, and not everything deserves to be read. Easter’s Blow to My Social Apathy

Hindsight allows us to review history and be outraged from a distance. But the pathway to genocide was paved by a slow and steady marginalization of the Jewish people. First, they were the wealthy bankers of high society scapegoated for Germany’s loss of national character. Populist outrage, in a time of economic distress, worked to justify the slow erosion of liberty for German Jews. Eventually they were placed under severe economic and social restrictions, curbs that were not unpopular in the country. They were depicted in cartoons and pop culture as animals with disfigured faces. Then they were ghettoized, rounded up and sent to labor camps, used in scientific experiments, and sent in cattle cars to places like Auschwitz, Dachau, and Treblinka as part of the “Final Solution.”

They joined Oregon, Vermont, Washington, and Montana where this great evil is now legal.

Critical Tactic: Surfacing the Question Beneath the Question

The point of this post is not to answer these questions. And it’s not to encourage people to always assume that there’s a deeper question beneath the question. Sometimes there’s not. Sometimes people are just curious. But in my experience, many times there is a deeper emotional, relational, or personal question at the heart of the matter. And unless (and until) we identify the real issue, our words will have little effect.

The Resurrection: A Bridge Between Two Worlds

A young man who wishes to remain a sound atheist cannot be too careful of his reading. There are traps everywhere." What would have happened to me, I often wonder, if I had read those words of C. S. Lewis when I was 18 years old and been alerted to the danger of reading? At the time, I was a grumpy and frankly rather arrogant atheist. I was totally convinced that there was no God, and that anyone who thought there was needed to be locked up for her own good. I was majoring in the sciences at high school and had won a scholarship to study chemistry at Oxford University, beginning in October 1971. I had every reason to believe that studying the sciences further would confirm my rampant godlessness. While waiting to go up to Oxford, I decided to work my way through a pile of "improving books." Needless to say, none of them were religious.

With Liberty and Jesus for All

The Bible Belt is collapsing. Our surrounding culture has become so secularized that being known as a Christian or belonging to a Christian church is no longer seen as part of being a good American, or necessary for social acceptance. But the disappearance of cultural Christianity is nothing to lament. Rather, it’s an opportunity to proclaim authentic Christianity, knowing that true gospel proclamation will always bring opposition. And that’s what the fight for religious liberty in every single era of the church is about. Join us as we consider how to train church members to stand up and assert the freedom of the church in a free state.

Book Review: Cold-Case Christianity

UPDATE: My review of the new Kids' edition has posted! Click here.  Introduction Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels ( Paperback , Kindle , Audiobook ) is one of the latest books to examine the evidence for the reliability of the New Testament. Homicide detective J. Warner Wallace  was an atheist before he began putting Christianity to the same tests that he places witnesses and suspects to in his investigations of crimes. He split his book into two sections. The first deals with the methods used in detective work. He uses his own experiences to illustrate and applies them to the different aspects of Christianity. In the second part, he specifically targets the reliability of the four gospels as eyewitness accounts of history. This review will be a chapter-by-chapter summary but should not be taken as comprehensive of Wallace's presentation: Section 1: Learn to Be a Detective Chapter 1: Don't Be a "Know-it-All" In the first chapter, Wallace begins his training of the reader by speaking a bit about presuppositions.

The Resurrection Answers Three Big Questions

If the resurrection is true, then Jesus has actually returned from the dead and can confirm that there is life after death. In John 14:3, Jesus says to his disciples, “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also” (ESV). In other words, Jesus can testify about life after death because he has died, and then returned to life as a witness. Thus, if the resurrection is true, then life continues after death, just as Jesus taught.

The Crucifixion and Old Testament Prophecy

If we look at the intricacy of the drama of the events of Jesus’ crucifixion, we see that some amazing things took place so that Old Testament prophetic utterances were fulfilled to the minutest detail. In the first instance, the Old Testament said that the Messiah would be delivered to the Gentiles (“dogs” or “congregation of the wicked”) for judgment ( Ps. 22:16 ). It just so happened in the course of history that Jesus was put on trial during a time of Roman occupation of Palestine. The Romans allowed a certain amount of home rule by their conquered vassals, but they did not permit the death penalty to be imposed by the local rulers, so the Jews did not have the authority to put Christ to death. The only thing they could do was to meet in council and take Jesus to Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, asking him to carry out the execution. So Jesus was delivered from His own people to the Gentiles—those who were “outside the camp.” He was delivered into the hands of pagans who dwelt outside the arena in which the face of God shone, outside the circle of the light of His countenance.

What Are We Afraid Of?

Craig Hazen, Ph.D. tells a story of one of his experiences when he was invited to talk to students in a very liberal university. His encouraging presentation gives us confidence that the truth claims of Christianity is indefeasible and of such importance that we are obligated, as followers of Jesus, to share. The kinds of questions the average skeptics ask are not worrisome and nothing to be afraid of.

Why TV Producers Didn't Like My Pitch for a Jesus Show

A case can also be made for the Christian Gospels as eyewitness accounts  using the template by which we determine eyewitness reliability in criminal trials. The gospel accounts were written early enough to have been penned by true eyewitnesses (or people who had access to them). This means that those who were present at the time could also "fact check" them for accuracy. We also have "internal" and "external" corroborative evidence validating the overarching claims of the Gospels, including the evidence of archaeology and non-Christian sources that chronicle the early claims and growth of Christianity. In addition, we can have great confidence that the contents of the Gospels weren't changed over time, given the historical "chain of custody" of those who protected the accounts. Finally, the authors didn't possess bias or motive that would cause them to lie about what they recorded. When we evaluate the Gospel authors using this four-part template, they stand up to the challenge.

BreakPoint: Fujimura’s “Culture Care”

So, how do we do this? Fujimura suggests that both Christians and the arts community start by learning to look at each other as potential allies, even friends, instead of as sworn enemies. He asks us to consider investing in cultural works, as we’re able to afford it. (As an example, he mentions customers who have purchased his own paintings by giving him a little money every month until they were fully paid for.) He suggests that leaders in the church, the arts community, and the business community form partnerships to help support each other and nurture the culture around them. He cites the example of singer Mahalia Jackson, who encouraged Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., to “tell ’em about the dream,” spurring him to make his most famous speech. Such encouragement can flow in both directions.

God of the Gaps | Reasonable Faith

Now, my question. In watching your debates, I came across your debate with Sean Carroll. What an outstanding performance by the both of you. I think it might be the best debate available on your site. But Carroll made a point in passing that bothers me, and I wonder if you might not flesh it out more for me. It is: How are the teleological argument, and, for that matter, the cosmological argument, not God of the gaps? It seems the argument really is "we don't know how this fine-tuning could occur without God, so it must be God." Or, "we don't know how something came from nothing, so it must be God." I admit, as I think it through, why can't the atheist simply tack on "yet." This does seem like an Ancient Greek saying "we don't know how lightning exists, so it must be Zeus." The correct answer then was simply to tack on a "yet" after "we don't know how lightning exists." I'm certain I'm missing something, but I do find this troubling from an intellectual standpoint.

39 The Horror of Crucifixion

Therefore, the mocking and jeering that accompanied crucifixion were not only allowed, they were part of the spectacle and were programmed into it. In a sense, crucifixion was a form of entertainment. Everyone understood that the specific role of the passersby was to exacerbate the dehumanization and degradation of the person who had been thus designated to be a spectacle. Crucifixion was cleverly designed — we might say diabolically designed — to be an almost theatrical enactment of the sadistic and inhumane impulses that lie within human beings. According to the Christian gospel, the Son of God voluntarily and purposefully absorbed all of that, drawing it into himself. . . .

Once upon a Time: The Enduring Appeal of Fairy Tales - Christian Research Institute

Traditional fairy tales take place in a land of once-upon-a-time, an unspecified past, with landscapes drawn in bold strokes: kingdoms, woodcutters’ cottages, forests, mountains. Later authors, such as Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote their own fairy tales, might add a bit more detail, but not much; simplicity of setting is a hallmark of the fairy tale. Everything about a fairy tale is stripped down to its essentials. The result is that these essentials are rendered extraordinarily vivid. These images are well suited for meaningful imaginative connections, for in a fairy tale, the hero’s journey or challenges can be powerful images of self-discovery and growth. The monsters that are defeated and the evils that are confronted in the fairy tale can provide an imaginative vocabulary for the reader’s own emotional and spiritual growth and maturation.

41 Free Will | Reasonable Faith

So I think that determinism is incompatible with free will, but that determinism has not been demonstrated to be true. So what does it mean to have free will? Some thinkers have said that it is the ability in causally identical situations to choose either A or not-A. It seems to me, however, that this so-called Principle of Alternative Possibilities is not a necessary condition of willing freely. I’m persuaded by illustrations like that given by Harry Frankfurt to show that freedom does not require the ability to choose other than as one does. Imagine a man whose brain has been secretly implanted with electrodes by a mad scientist. The scientist, being an Obama supporter, decides that he will activate the electrodes to make the man vote for Obama if the man goes into the polling booth to vote for Romney. On the other hand, if the man chooses to vote for Obama, then the scientist will not activate the electrodes. Suppose, then, the man goes into the polling booth and presses the button to vote for Obama. In such a case it seems that the man freely votes for Obama. Yet it was not with

Why I am bullish on Christianity (yes, you read that correctly)

I’ve seen the surveys. I’m aware of the rise of the so-called “nones,” who profess no religious affiliation. And frankly, that doesn’t trouble me very much. Rather than claiming to be Christians, as many have done in years past, now these people are now willing to be more honest. Today it’s socially acceptable -- in many places even desirable -- to be a skeptic. “Atheist” is no longer considered such a derogatory term.

The Briefing 04-12-17 - AlbertMohler.com

In the last several months this scandal has rocked the state of Alabama, and as mounting evidence came against the Governor, especially in the form of recorded conversations between the governor and a female staffer, it became evident that the majority of citizens in Alabama were appalled by their Governor. But the Governor tenaciously held to office even after his wife had left him and divorced him, his wife of 50 years. When he was elected to office, Robert Bentley was known as a medical doctor and as a Sunday school teacher at a Southern Baptist church, a very influential church in the state of Alabama. But by the time he left office, the Governor had been revealed to have been a hypocrite. And the question of course from a biblical perspective is, when did that begin? As we look at this story you can see how the political class immediately makes a political calculation and at the very least, it’s evident that leaders, political leaders in the state of Alabama, came to view this governor as a liability they wanted to do without. The Governor in effect delivered himself on a platter to those who intended to remove him from office because he committed what would be undeniably crimes in the course of the cover-up of this scandalous, adulterous affair.

Reasons To Believe : Can Science Detect the Creator’s Fingerprints in Nature?

If Scripture is true, then scientific investigation should uncover evidence for design throughout the natural realm. Science should find God’s fingerprints. And, indeed, it has. As a biochemist, I am deeply impressed with the elegance, sophistication, and ingenuity of the cell’s molecular systems. In my view, these features reflect the work of a mind—a Divine Mind. But, the evidence for intelligent design in the biochemical realm is much more extensive. For example, the eerie similarity between the structure and function of biochemical systems, and the objects and devices produced by human designers further evinces the Creator’s handiwork. In my book The Cell’s Design , I show how the remarkable similarities  serve to revitalize William Paley’s Watchmaker Argument for God’s existence .
