Apologetics is Unassuming

But the problem with this definition is this doesn’t uniquely pick out the discipline. After all, the systematic theologian seems to be defending Christian beliefs when he or she defends a particular doctrine. A Sunday morning sermon is seems even to be a defense of Christian beliefs. The pastor provides reasons for how to understand a passage and how it should be applied in our lives. So this definition isn’t going to work.

10 Biblical Reasons God Allows Suffering

Each of these points deserves much more explanation. And each point raises further questions as well. Remember, there is no single answer to suffering. But wrestling through these passages, and others, can help provide a biblical perspective on suffering.

Why Must God’s Justice Be Satisfied?

Because God cannot cease to be either merciful or just, His justice requires that each and every one of our sins we have committed against His infinite majesty be punished with temporal and eternal punishments of soul and body. We hear that threat in the garden: “In the day that you eat of [the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil] you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:17). We hear that threat in the New Testament: “The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 6:23).

Did Jesus Really Exist?

"No, he didn't!" some skeptics claim, thinking that this is a quick, powerful lever with which to pry people away from "the fable of Christianity." But the lever crumbles at its very first use. In fact, there is more evidence that Jesus of Nazareth certainly lived than for most famous figures of the ancient past. This evidence is of two kinds: internal and external, or, if you will, sacred and secular. In both cases, the total evidence is so overpowering, so absolute that only the shallowest of intellects would dare to deny Jesus' existence. And yet this pathetic denial is still parroted by "the village atheist," bloggers on the internet, or such organizations as the Freedom from Religion Foundation.

What is the criterion of embarrassment, and what are some examples of it?

The criterion of embarrassment is just one of the historical criteria used to select the parts of a piece of ancient literature that are likely to be historical. Other things in the source may have happened, but we can’t know them as history. If significant parts of a text are historical, it is possible to accept it as historical until there are specific reasons to say that some part of it is NOT historical.

He was the son of an affluent merchant who was educated at Brown University and Princeton University, where he was influenced by the famed Princeton theologians.

How Do We Know That Jesus Really Died? | Cold Case Christianity

But stop and think about it for a minute. The disciples had to remove the nails, collect the body, carry it some distance to the tomb, treat the body thoroughly with the customary ointments and spices used in such situations, wrap the body and then place it in the tomb. While we can read through this process in minutes, it takes a lot longer to actually complete. Surely the disciples were also deeply grieved by the death of Jesus. In all this extended contact with his body, do we really think they wouldn’t do everything possible to prove to themselves that he wasn’t really dead? In all of this time, is it reasonable to believe that they wouldn’t have noticed the three inconvenient properties of dead bodies? I’ve been around enough dead people to recognize that properties that appear when a heart stops beating:

The evidence for Christianity is like a tsunami

My challenge for you is to consider the evidence for yourself. According to the Apostle Paul, if Christ did not rise from the dead, then Christianity is false, and Christians are to be pitied (1 Corinthians 15:14, 17). But if Jesus did rise, then Christianity is true. The evidence is there, if you are willing to consider it. After 50 years of studying it, I can tell you that this tsunami has not let up.

Your Kids Need to Think Critically About the Resurrection…Because Secular Media Does Not

1-4. I’ll try to connect this in one section: Not probable for several reasons: Their life up to that point shows strong moral values, lying not being their “tool”. But they were cowards. They left Jesus alone when they came to arrest him. After the resurrection they were scattered scared outcasts, confused and in grief. However, something happens that transforms them so quickly into bold men and women, willing to die, to be mocked, to be tortured, to be at least riduculed etc. for their claims. There are many documents of their deeds regarding spreading the word about Jesus and regarding their troubles because of them, I mean extra-blbical documents as well as Biblical. Scholars agree on that.

Sinning at the Movies - Christian Research Institute

Scholars of the Dictionary of Biblical Imagery point out several key passages in the Song of Solomon that most translators, out of a biased modesty, have rendered less than true to the Hebrew text’s explicit sexual descriptions. 1 Granted, this is married love Solomon is erotically describing, but erotic description it still is. This author also “shoots a film” about illicit sexuality. When he wrote Proverbs 7, Solomon was not merely giving a fictional warning of the wages of sexual sin; he was also using a dramatic image of adulterous seduction in order to draw the reader vicariously into the temptation in order to understand the seriousness of the consequences. Solomon sets up the scenario with vividly racy images. He portrays the sexiness of the harlot and expresses the man’s heart being drawn to her. We hear the intimate whisperings of seduction in his ears. We can almost touch the beautiful exotic linens covering the bed, smell the perfume and spices, and listen to the tempting appeal that there are no consequences. We feel the man give way and give in, following the harlot to her lair.

Are Your Kids Ready for Apologetics?

My children are still young, so it’s easy to spend little time thinking about teaching them apologetics. We get lost in the hustle and craziness of homework and baseball and tests and “Do I have any clean socks?”, and well, just getting dinner on the table each night is a challenge. Yet as they are getting older, I want to teach them the Biblical truths that will equip them to withstand spiritual attacks and answer the tough questions that they might someday face from their peers.

New Geochemical Discoveries Reaffirm Earth as a Privileged Planet | Evolution News

Despite this general lack of phosphorous in the universe, it is the 11th most abundant element on Earth, and it’s vital for life. Remember CHONPS — the acronym you learned in high school to remember the elements most important for life? In case you forgot, the “P” stands for phosphorus, which is vital for the construction of DNA and RNA in every life form, and is also an indispensable component of the energy-carrying molecule in all living things, ATP. Phosphorylation, the addition of a phosphoryl group (PO 3 2- ), is also necessary for the function of most enzymes, as well as numerous other biomolecules. Yet our home planet is strangely and almost inexplicably rich in phosphorous.

Resurrection—No Doubt About It

If someone rejects the Bible’s authority, that person must still contend with the fact that multiple, reliable historical documents make these amazing claims. And based on evidence within the Bible itself, there is no reason to reject those claims. Even most secular historians have come to accept the evidence used in defense of Christ’s Resurrection, though they strive to reach a different conclusion about its significance.

Remembering Bonhoeffer, 2018: Bonhoeffer was Not an [American] Evangelical, but he was an Evangelical Lutheran

Of course, as always, Bonhoeffer’s words must be understood in a much wider context than they are presented here. It is almost never a good idea to read even whole paragraphs from Bonhoeffer in isolation, because his thought is so dense that it cannot adequately be presented in sound bites. Those quotes which often are used as sound bites are either fabrications (eg. the “Not to act is to act…” quote that has yet to have an actual source found) or the exceptions (and even then I’d be very careful). Bonhoeffer throughout this work demonstrates that the Genesis is God’s Word but he means it in a sense that is very aligned to Luther, though not necessarily Lutheranism: that it is God’s Word because it ultimately teaches us about God and Christ. He strongly argues that God remains God and that God’s Word creates and brings life, but he does not demand that the text of Scripture meet his own modern standards of scientific accuracy and even suggests that yes, it would be silly to think it could.

Rapid Response: "You Can't Trust the Gospels Because They Were Written by Christians"

In our Rapid Response series, we tackle common concerns about (and objections to) the Christian worldview by providing short, conversational responses. These posts are designed to model what our answers might look like in a one-on-one setting, while talking to a friend or family member. Imagine if someone said, “I can’t trust what the New Testament says about Jesus: after all, it was written by biased Christians . I can only believe what’s been written by ancient non – Christians , and they don’t say much about Jesus.” How would you answer such an objection? Here is a conversational example of how I recently responded:

When Women Face Their Curse-Ravaged Homes

It’s only in the gospel that we can face the hard places of our homes and relationships — and then believe, as the women of God did before us, in a land we can only see from afar for now. We can join the other women of faith who died, not receiving what was promised, because God is still providing something better — and apart from all of the men and women who come after us, we will not be made perfect (Hebrews 11:39–40). We fight for faith not only because of those who fought before us, but also for those women who will come after us, trained up by us to believe in a God who is still faithful to give what he promised.

Mormons Are Not Christians Because the Mormon Jesus Is Not the Christian Christ | Cold Case Christianity

While Mormons and Christians may refer to Jesus by name, they are clearly describing two different beings. Jesus’ identity is more than His name; it is the collection of His unique characteristics and features. In many ways, I am far more similar to the other Jim Wallace’s in my family than the Mormon Jesus is to the historic, orthodox Jesus of Christianity. When we ask our Mormon friends and family members, “Do you trust Jesus as your Savior?” they will most certainly answer in the affirmative. But the more important question is the second one we’ve been examining: “To which Jesus are you referring?” In answering this second question, it’s quickly apparent we are talking about two different beings. The earliest prophets of Mormonism (Joseph Smith and Brigham Young) understood the differences between the Mormon Jesus and the Christian Christ. Neither Smith nor Young had any interest in being identified as Christians; they rejected Christianity as a corrupt theistic system that needed restoration and saw Mormonism as the true restoration of the faith, including its redefinition of Jesus.

Is the Body That ‘Betrayed’ Me Still ‘Very Good’?

First, the gospel presumes a realistic portrait of life under the sun. Despite the glories of creation, which do proclaim the splendor of God’s handiwork (Ps. 19:1–6), not everything is as it should be or as it originally came from God’s hands (Gen. 2). After Adam’s sin follows God’s just curse upon it (Gen. 3:16–19), and creation itself is subject to corruption and futility (Rom. 8:20). We feel that curse in our bones.
