7 Reasons You'll Be Glad You Saw The Case for Christ

Lee would have none of it. His desk was in a newsroom with the sign plastered on the wall, “If your mom says she loves you, check it out.” He was sure that the story of Christ wouldn’t check out. He was just as certain that with the right facts in hand, he could save Leslie from her new delusion.

The Seven Last Sayings of Jesus from the Cross

Joy Will Keep You from Falling Away

Jesus’s instructions and promises sustained the apostles through every trial, and his words are powerful to sustain you through every pain and suffering. By the Spirit, Jesus gives you joy and peace-filled promises like this: “For those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called [in Christ] according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). Jesus’s words are powerful to give you assurance when you sin and Satan accuses you. By the Spirit, Jesus says, “God made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21). When you doubt God’s promises to you, Jesus says by the Spirit, “All the promises of God find their Yes in him [Christ]” (2 Corinthians 1:20). He also tenderly asks you, “He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things (Romans 8:32)?

Louis C.K.’s Comments About Abortion Are Causing Some Controversy

Comedian Louis C.K. has just released a new stand-up special on Netflix, and made some pretty controversial comments about abortion. (Warning, as with many of the comedian’s bits, this one is profane and irreverent, so read on with caution.)

Are Certain Prayers Just a Waste of Time?

There are other reasons too, like insecurity or a wrong view of God, but when I believe prayer is solely about outcomes, I act superstitiously. I start out complimenting Him because my dad always told me people help people they like so it can’t hurt, right? Then I usually pray about someone else’s need, to prove to God and myself I’m not selfish, all the while wondering when it would be appropriate to transition to my request. At some point, I make the move and ask God for what I want. I make sure to include “Your will be done” in some form or another just to acknowledge I’m a team player, and then I wait. Like a high school senior standing by the mailbox for a college acceptance letter. How many others applied? Are my credentials good enough? What if I don’t get in?

The Actual War on Christians

In a column last March, a Coptic journalist recounted being asked by a coworker where her future husband would spend their wedding night, given that a Christian woman is required to sleep with a priest on her wedding night, according to what she knew of the Copts. The question apparently had its roots in Mel Gibson’s film Braveheart , which depicts English lords having the right of the first night. The column unleashed a wave of confessions—comments posted beneath the column and on social media—by Muslim readers admitting to this and other misconceptions they held about their fellow citizens: Coptic priests wear black because they are saddened that Islam rules Egypt. On New Year’s Eve, churches turn out their lights so that men and women can kiss. The late Pope Shenouda, the leader of the Copt Church from 1971 to 2012, conceived of a plan to reconquer Egypt for Christianity by arranging for Coptic doctors to perform abortions on Muslim women. These are not merely bigoted beliefs held by some, but pathologies with profound ramifications. No Copt has been allowed to become an OBGYN professor in any of Egypt’s universities.

Why Corruption Is an Urgent Justice Issue

Those impacted by corruption are most often low in income and social status; they are also the ones most in need of protection from government leaders, public safety officials, the justice system, and policies and programs. As Claire Wilkinson, IJM’s vice president of regional operations in Africa, explained to me, “The burden of corruption largely falls on the poor and it makes them extremely vulnerable to injustice. We see this in our clients falsely charged with crimes they did not commit—all because they were unable to pay a bribe to the police to get out of custody. We see it in police officers killing young men without fear of investigation or prosecution.”

Look, the World Has Gone After Him: Prelude to Palm Sunday

I said few doubted Jesus that day. But the few who did wielded a lethal amount of earthly power. As the Pharisees watched this potent moment with unmistakable implications unfold, they said to each other, “You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after him” (John 12:19). But this was not resignation. The crowd’s jubilation only hardened the authorities’ resolve to kill the dead-raising Son of God.

What If My Husband Looks at Porn?

We are not capable of saving our husbands any more than our husbands are capable of saving us. Both of us are creatures in need of grace. Accountability structures and rules and online limits all have their place at times. But ultimately, it comes down to you alone in those moments of temptation. It is in those moments that you can only trust Jesus to help you. And it is in those moments that you can only trust Jesus to help your husband. In a world filled with alluring sexual temptation, nothing but the blood of Jesus can wash away our sin and free us from it.

Yes, You Can Know God’s Will for Your Life

I recommend that you choose the time when you are at your very best. I believe that God always gives us His very best, so I want to respond by spending time with Him when I am most alert and ready to receive. Some people like getting up early, like five a.m.—that’s great for them, but I am not at my best that early. I have found that God does not speak to me at that hour because, well, I am asleep (He can speak to me in my dreams if He wants to say anything to me before the sun rises). God is happy to meet with you any time of day, so what time works for you?

Morality and The New Atheism

Though the chorus of voices decrying belief in God has been humming in the ideological background for centuries, it seems to have reached a crescendo with the emergence of a movement that has been dubbed the new atheism. The trademark of this new and continuing brand of atheism is its vitriolic attack on religion. To its advocates, religious beliefs are not only false; they are also dangerous and must be expunged from all corners of society. The pundits of the new atheism are not content to nail discussion theses on the door of religion; they are also busy delivering eviction notices to the allegedly atavistic elements of an otherwise seamlessly progressive atheistic evolution of Homo Sapiens .

The Spiritual Truths Behind ‘Better Call Saul’

Unlike other anti-heroes, he’s not driven by a singular vice (think about Walt White with greed; Dexter, with bloodlust; Don Draper with sex; Jesse Pinkman with addiction). Saul is more complicated than that. His vice is his nature. It’s his constant pull to betray what he knows is right because the temptation to do so is simply too great to resist.

Movie Review: The Case for Christ

I went into this movie with two preconceived ideas. The first was a bit of worry about a Christian movie. Unfortunately, Christian movies have not always had the best reputation when it comes to quality. Things in general have been getting better but there is the concern of what could be.

Does the ‘Billy Graham Rule’ Hurt or Help Women?

Rules that establish expectations and implement accountability are just as much about protecting one’s platform to lead with transparency and authority, as they are about protecting one’s marriage and personal values. In a world where leaders of all kinds often fall from grace after a secret personal indiscretion comes to light, could it be that guidelines like the Billy Graham rule actually preserve a leader’s platform and hold him or her accountable to their constituencies?

You Are Welcome Here

The result of a Christian community actually living this way is breathtaking. Paul says that we should welcome one another as Christ welcomed us “for the glory of God.” It is possible for a community of redeemed sinners to display God’s worth to the world. There can be no higher goal for any church. Paul’s teaching is great news for small, ordinary churches. It means you don’t need gorgeous buildings, or state-of-the-art ministries, or famous pastors, or phenomenal music, or programs for all ages in order to bring glory to God. Your church glorifies God by being family to one another, by welcoming one another as Christ has already welcomed you.

You Are Not Your Pain

Some of these pains have wounded us so deeply that the healing is still underway. It will take time for the balm of comfort to soothe our sores, the bandages of truth to seal us back together, and the medicine of faith to restore us to health. We desperately want to be healed, and are in the process of daily receiving it.

Who Is the "Fool" that Denies God? Not Who You Think.

The wise person is someone who believes in God and lives accordingly. The fool is someone who follows human wisdom over divine wisdom, and thus chooses the path of wickedness (see 14:2-5). When it is understood this way, it is clear that the Psalmist is not merely speaking of those who reject belief in God (atheists), but also believers who live selfish lives independently of God and His ways. How ironic!

What Fewer Christians in America Means for Christian Parents

Study after study shows the trend of fewer people identifying as Christians, and more people identifying as atheist, agnostic, or “nothing in particular.” Frankly, I don’t think most of us even need the studies to find that out. It’s blatantly obvious in the media, in the government, in schools, and online.

The Most Astonishing Easter Miracle

When I visit a church, I notice things. The number of blacks, Asians, and Latinos in relation to whites. Whether women are on the platform. How people are dressed. The quality of the cars in the parking lot. I notice whether the congregation is old or young, and assume that if it’s young, it’s vibrant. As an Anglican, I notice the order of worship and naturally look down my nose at all that is liturgically incorrect. I also notice how much paper is wasted in thick worship bulletins, how much empty air is being heated needlessly above the worshipers, and other signs of environmental friendliness.

United Breaks Guitars

You saw the video, now GET THE BOOK: . Looking for a unique speaker for your next event: for case studies and highlights of Dave's speaking tour. There is now a video response: Full Story: - In the spring of 2008, Sons of Maxwell were traveling to Nebraska for a one-week tour and my Taylor guitar was witnessed being thrown by United Airlines baggage handlers in Chicago. I discovered later that the $3500 guitar was severely damaged. They didn't deny the experience occurred but for nine months the various people I communicated with put the responsibility for dealing with the damage on everyone other than themselves and finally said they would do nothing to compensate me for my loss. So I promised the last person to finally say no to compensation (Ms. Irlweg) that I would write and produce three songs about my experience with United Airlines and make videos for each to be viewed online by anyone in the world. United Breaks Guitars is the first of those songs.

Why Should I Believe that Jesus Rose from the Dead?

In answering this question, it’s helpful for us to return to the “facts of the case.” Here, speculation is useless. It does not matter what we thought reality was like: whether we believed in thirty gods or none. It doesn’t matter what we find helpful, meaningful, or fulfilling. This is not about spirituality or moral uplift. Something has happened in history and we cannot wish it away. It either happened or it did not happen, but the claim itself is hardly meaningless or beyond investigation. Let’s look at the facts of the case.

What’s the Last Thing You Would Tweet?

So, that’s why I wrote what I wrote. And the reason I chose to focus the way I did was because the apostle Paul already wrote that tweet in 1 Corinthians 15:3–4. I didn’t count his characters. It’s close. He said, “I delivered to you as of first importance” — and I presume that would mean last importance also — “what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” So, Paul says that of first importance is that Christ died for our sins and rose again. Now, if that’s of first importance for Paul, then I’m standing on firm ground in making it my last tweet, my most important thing that I say finally.

Fifty Agreements Among The Resurrection Accounts

What I'll be citing is agreement between two or more resurrection accounts in a way that's consistent with the others. Since some of the accounts, like the closing of Mark's gospel and Paul's material on the resurrection at the beginning of 1 Corinthians 15, are so brief, there's a lot they don't address. If two or more other accounts agree with each other on a point, but that point isn't discussed in Mark or 1 Corinthians 15, the agreement among those other accounts is significant anyway.

Jay Richards: "Who Designed the Designer?" | Evolution News

Amazingly, it’s the chief objection raised to religious belief by Richard Dawkins in The God Delusion . It’s also a complaint you hear all the time in response to intelligent design. Regarding the “natural temptation…to attribute the appearance of design to actual design itself,” Dawkins replies:

Confession is an important spiritual discipline. How should we apply it in our lives this #Easter ?

Heartbreaking to learn of the deadly attacks on Coptic Christians in Egypt who were worshipping in church on Palm Sunday. As we enter Holy Week, may we pray fervently for the persecuted church and all who are suffering around the world. Jesus Christ's death on the cross reminds us that we have a God who is loving enough to suffer with us and also one who offers eternal hope beyond our present age.
