Perhaps things are out of balance. I can't say. I know that Bill loves the Word and is a serious student of Scripture. But perhaps there's an over-emphasis on signs and experiences. Could be. That's a brother needing balance, not a heretic and deceiver.

Can Christians Answer One Simple Question?

Why are you a Christian? As a youth pastor and professor at a Christian college, I ask this question to all of my students. The typical answer in response is nothing but a blank stare. After a little coaxing, sometimes I get answers like “’cause I was born in ‘Merica!” With that I respond, “Oh, so if you were born in Afghanistan, then you would be a Muslim?” The blank stare typically returns.

When Science Masquerades as Philosophy

Anyone who came to this conclusion about metal detectors should visit a doctor, of course. The point is, Rosenberg and others who follow his lead should allow for additional ways besides science to explain reality along with life’s big questions. Metal detectors will always find metal and science will always find material/physical explanations to reality. We must  ask what kinds of questions science can legitimately answer.  Can science can answer the “why” questions?  Yes, it is true science can say why the universe exists. In other words, they can say the universe exists because of the Big Bang or some other scientific explanation. But, science is generally restricted to study how the mechanisms work behind several features of the natural or physical world. But once science attempts to answer whether or why the universe and several features of reality may have a deeper purpose, design, or an end goal, it enters the realm of philosophy.

In this episode of the Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast, J. Warner provides helpful tips for those who want to share the Gospel and the truth of Christianity. What important skills can we glean from those who make a “closing argument” for a living? J. Warner provides several insights to help you make the case. This approach is described in more detail in Forensic Faith: A Homicide Detective Makes the Case for a More Reasonable, Evidential Christian Faith. Be sure to check out Forensic Faith and the accompanying curriculum. Be sure to watch the Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast on NRBtv every Monday and Saturday! In addition, here is the audio podcast (the Cold-Case Christianity Weekly Podcast is located on iTunes or our RSS Feed):

6 The War That Wasn't

Many skeptics love to talk about the “war” between Science and Christianity.  They characterize Christianity as one of the great evils of the world perpetrating ignorance and superstition while Science is in the noble and relentless pursuit of truth at all costs.  Of course, because of Christianity’s vast reach and power, it has persecuted and suppressed Science in an ultimately fruitless attempt to hide its own fallacies.  At least that’s how the story goes.

Here Is How Evolutionists Respond to the Evidence

Mutations are rare and good ones are even more rare. One reason mutations are rare is because there are sophisticated error correction mechanisms in cells. So according to evolution, random mutations created correction mechanisms to suppress random mutations. And that paradox is only the beginning. That is because error correction mechanisms, as with pretty much everything else in biology, require many, many mutations to be created.

9 What does it mean to say Christianity is true?

If we are going to say “Christianity” is true, obviously  it is about Jesus Christ. But what does that mean? “The comparable New Testament Greek word is Christos, from which we get the English word “Christ.” But this Greek word carries the same connotations as the Hebrew word — “the Anointed One” which is is where the word “messiah” comes from. “Messiah” means “anointed one” and is derived from verbs that have the general meaning of “to rub something” or, more specifically, “to anoint someone.” The Jewish Scriptures records the history of those who were anointed for a specific purpose such as priests, prophets and kings. So are we saying Christianity is true because Jesus is the “Christ”? Thus, he is the Messiah that was discussed in the O.T.? Does this come up in your discussions?  Let’s look at how the apostles spread the Gospel in Acts.

Fact Check: Extraordinary Claims Require Extraordinary Evidence

First, we need to know what qualifies as an "extraordinary claim"? When challenging a claim based on how extraordinary it is, we need to ask why this claim is considered extraordinary. What makes a claim "extraordinary"? Where some claims "extraordinary" in the past but not "extraordinary" now? Are some claims "extraordinary" in some cultures, but not so in others? Extraordinary in comparison to what? In my experience, most individuals who make this claim seem to imply that anything that does not line up with the philosophy of naturalism is "extraordinary." The naturalists who hold to this view apparently do not realize that, if this is a presupposition to any claim they make, they have begged the question and committed a logical fallacy. Yet by this standard, any worldview could claim that anything contrary to its own presuppositions are "extraordinary." Without a solid definition of what counts as an "extraordinary claim," this becomes an almost meaningless statement.

Harvest Church Pastor Greg Laurie Reveals Secret to Billy Graham's Evangelistic Success

"Billy was a real trailblazer in using all platforms for the Gospel, things that we take for granted were pioneered by Billy Graham," Laurie, who leads evangelistic Harvest crusades, said. "Between radio, producing high-quality films and even social media, Graham was quick to adapt to changing technologies and always wanted to be very connected to culture. He even started using Christian music before it was popular; he used music and to build bridges and connect to a whole generation. He was very effective at reaching young people, and that's something that has significantly influenced my ministry as well."

When Science Masquerades as Philosophy

Is there a God? No. What is the nature of reality? What physics says it is. What is the purpose of the universe? There is none. What is the meaning of life? Ditto. Why am I here? Just dumb luck . . . Is there free will? Not a chance. What is the difference between right and wrong, good and bad? There is no moral difference between them. Why should I be moral? Because it makes you feel better than being immoral. Is abortion, euthanasia, suicide, paying taxes, foreign aid, or anything else you don’t like forbidden, permissible, or something obligatory? Anything goes.[1]

The fifth biblical step toward restoring a relationship is to attack the problem, not the person. You cannot fix the problem if you’re consumed with fixing the blame. You must choose between the two. The Bible says, “A gentle response defuses anger, but a sharp tongue kindles a temper-fire” (Proverbs 15:1 The Message).

Two More Ways Learning to Defend Your Faith Benefits You

A third reason to engage our minds and be prepared to defend the faith is a very practical one: it makes us stronger in times of trials. The questions one must deal with in defending the faith are truly the biggest questions of life, questions like the existence of God, why am I placed on this earth, and how I should treat my fellow man. These are tough issues that require a clear mind and considerable attention. No one wants to wrestle with such ideas during a time of emotional upheaval. They require each of us to ask ourselves penetrating questions like, "Do I really have the good evidence that God exists, or am I just kind of feeding off of a lot of the information that I've been told? Am I just believing that because it feels good or because it helps me?" Once you've explored the arguments for these issues and reached a satisfactory conclusion, you can rest assured of the fact of God's existence or the resurrection.

7 Ways to Work Hard at Rest

Life tends toward business. Have you noticed? Clutter and frantic are effortless. Clean and calm tend to slip away while we’re not looking. Over the last several years I’ve been through busier seasons, and now God has kindly provided more of a sabbatical kind of season. I’ve noticed several things about the idea of Sabbath rest: Busy seasons are often when I’ve learned how to do Sabbath well. Not being busy is never a guarantee that I’m actually resting my soul. Paradoxically, drawing from both of these points, rest is hard work. Here are some specific lessons I’ve learned along the way. Maybe they’ll help you to endure amid busyness and fatigue. 1. Rest Before You Get Tired Working until you crash is an easy default. When there’s a lot to do, it’s easy to keep going as long as you have the energy. But I’ve found that effective Sabbath rest requires paying greater attention to patterns of behavior over the long haul than bursts of energy in the short term. It can be difficult to wrench yourself away from the computer when you still feel like working.

Everyone Wants to Be Happy, But Fewer Are Willing to Do What It Takes | Cold Case Christianity

The New York Times reported on Yale’s most popular class : Psyc 157 – “Psychology and the Good Life.” The course, taught by Dr. Laurie Santos, “tries to teach students how to lead a happier, more satisfying life.” It “focuses both on positive psychology — the characteristics that allow humans to flourish, according to Dr. Santos — and behavioral change, or how to live by those lessons in real life.” Happiness is a universal human desire, and Psyc 157 seems to be responding to this common longing on the part of university students. But while Dr. Santos teaches her class that a happier life results from developing “good habits… like students showing more gratitude, procrastinating less, [and] increasing social connections,” she may be missing something far more important to long-term happiness: marriage .

Were Jesus' Disciples Illiterate Peasants?

The New Testament was originally written in Greek. But some skeptics say this shows many New Testament books must have been forged–that the people who wrote them probably weren’t Jesus’ disciples. Why? Because most 1st century Jews living where Jesus lived couldn’t read or write at all. Since Jesus’ disciples spoke Aramaic, how could these guys write any New Testament books, in Greek, if they couldn’t even read or write in their own language?

4 priorities for every gospel-centered parent – Russell Moore

Jesus says you have a situation in which your household is not just about order. Households are not merely about behavior. They are not even merely about training up and preparing people for the lives that God has for them. The households themselves are pointing and speaking to something about the gospel. This is exactly what the apostle Paul says to the church in Ephesians 3:15. He writes of God the Father, “From whom every family in heaven and on earth is named.” Here and everywhere else throughout Scripture there is the reminder that human parenting, and especially human fathering, points and shows something of what it means to know God and who God is.

However, if you spend time with a non–seminary friend, you’ll be reminded that the pastorate is far from the only profession that steals sleep. For example, your businessman friend might tell you about the list of people corporate told him to lay off a couple weeks before Christmas. And not unlike some of the burdens you carry, he can’t seem to shake their faces or situations while sitting at the dinner table with his family. Or if you think that former denominational worker was difficult to deal with, wait until your banking friend tells you about the manipulative tactics a group of unbelievers came up with in their ongoing office wars.

Investigating Easter: Is The Resurrection A Late Legend? | Cold Case Christianity

But, while this explanation may account for the empty tomb (if we assume the body was removed), it fails to explain the early claims of the apostles related to the resurrection. As I’ve demonstrated in Cold-Case Christianity (Chapters 11 and 13), the earliest accounts of the apostles, as recorded by their own students, include all the miraculous deeds attributed to Jesus, including the Resurrection. Cold-case detectives have to deal with the issue of legend more than other types of detectives. So much time has passed from the point of the original crime that it seems possible that witnesses may now amplify their original observations in one way or another. Luckily, I have the record of the first investigators to assist me as I try to separate what the eyewitnesses truly saw (and reported at the time of the crime) from what they might recall today. If the original record of the first investigators is thorough and well documented, I will have a much easier time discerning the truth about what each witness saw. I’ve discovered that the first recollections of the eyewitnesses are usually more detailed and reliable than what they might offer thirty years later.
