Reasons To Believe : 12 Evidences for the Resurrection of Jesus, Part 3

According to the earliest reports concerning Jesus’s resurrection, three of the men Jesus appeared to were either initially highly skeptical of the truth of the resurrection or adamantly opposed to Jesus’s claims to be the messiah. Those three were Thomas, James, and Saul (who would become Paul), all of whom were predisposed to dismiss the truth of the resurrection. Since Paul’s conversion will be addressed later, let’s consider the stunning impact Jesus’s resurrection had on Thomas and James.

8 Using a Daily Devotional Book | Reasonable Faith

The second devotional that we have found helpful is Amazing Grace by Kenneth Osbeck, a music director with a love of the classical hymns. It is tragic that these rich hymns are being lost to the church because of contemporary worship services led by garage band musicians. It has been rightly said, I think, that the theological character of a church will be determined not just by its preaching but by its music. Measured by that standard, the American church and churches abroad influenced by it are in real trouble. Many of today’s Christians have never sung the exalted words of Charles Wesley’s “And Can It Be?” or the comforting words of “Be Still, My Soul” by Katherina Schlegel or the beautiful words of Bernard of Clairvaux’s “Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts.” These are wonderful, deep hymns with beautiful lyrics. The church which neglects these treasures will be impoverished for it. This daily devotional tells the stories, one each calendar day, of how these various hymns were composed and put to music. It’s striking how many hymns come out of experiences of deep suffering, which reminds us that health and prosperity are not God’s will for every Christian.

Antony Flew–The Most Renowned Atheist of the 20th Century

I remember reading Antony Flew’s article “Theology and Falsification” as an undergraduate in an introduction to philosophy class.  At that time, back in the early 90’s, Flew was still known as one of the most prolific and influential atheists in the world.  One thing I appreciated about Flew was that he was willing to engage in civil dialogue with Christian scholars–unlike many who wear the atheist mantle today.  One of those scholars was Gary Habermas , a professor of philosophy at Liberty University.  As far back as 1987, Flew and Habermas were publishing transcripts of their debates on the resurrection of Jesus.  Flew and Habermas engaged in a number of debates and dialogues, and developed a lasting friendship.  When it came time to find a writer for our entry on Flew for the Dictionary of Christianity and Science , it was only natural to ask Gary Habermas.  Dr. Habermas’s insightful and appreciative article on Flew appears below.

What Is Really Best for Me? Applying the Bible to the Same-Sex-Attracted

However, the abuse of a thing does not equal the thing itself. When applied in love, the historic Christian interpretation does not tell homosexual people that they are worthless. Rather, it tells them that their ultimate worth is found in the image of God that they bear (Genesis 1:27), instead of in their sexual expression. It does not encourage SSA Christians to hate themselves or deny who they are, but rather to find their identity in the loving Savior who gave his very life for them (Ephesians 5:2). It does not treat SSA believers as second-class citizens, but rather as beloved brothers and sisters whose gifts are necessary for the church to function properly (Romans 12:4–8).

3) “The man whose little sermon is ‘repent’ sets himself against his age, and will for the time being be battered mercilessly by the age whose moral tone he challenges. There is but one end for such a man — ‘off with his head!’ You had better not try to preach repentance until you have pledged your head to heaven.”

Robotech: The Macross Saga- Pacifism, Loyalty, and Honor

Robotech was one of the first anime programs to be released in the United States, in 1985. So I’m a little late to the party to finally be watching it, but I always wanted to when I was little, and my wife got me the series for Christmas a year ago. I was surprised by the depth of some of the worldview-level issues that were addressed in the show alongside a story of aliens vs. humans. Here, I will examine some of these worldview issues from the show from a Christian perspective. There will be  SPOILERS  in what follows.

7 Reasons Christians Are Not Required to Tithe

When Christians are instructed to give to the poor, they aren’t commanded to give “the poor tithe.” Instead, they are instructed to be generous in helping those in need (Acts 2:43–47; 4:32–37; 11:27–30; Gal. 2:10; 1 Cor. 16:1–4; 2 Cor. 8:1–9:15). For example, 1 Corinthians 16:1–4—a passage often cited in popular circles in support—doesn’t mention tithing; it relates to a one-time gift for poor saints in Jerusalem.

Five Marks of a Servant Leader

Other factors muddy the waters even more for us. To begin with, all Christian leaders have indwelling sin, which means even at the height of their maturity, they will still be defective servants. Add to this the fact that most leaders have not yet reached their height of maturity. Add to this the fact that all Christian followers also have indwelling sin and most haven’t reached our height of maturity either. Add to this the fact that different temperaments, experiences, giftings, and callings influence both how certain leaders tend to serve, and how certain followers tend to perceive that leadership — a leader’s genuine attempt to serve might be interpreted by a genuine follower as an attempt to “lord it over” them (2 Corinthians 1:24). And then there are wolfish, self-serving leaders who, while deceiving their followers, appear for a time to behave in ways similar to servant leaders.

There’s a Difference Between Allegory and Heresy

The argument I’ve heard most often about Young’s work is that he is a universalist trying to make universalism look like real theology. Universalism is the belief that when Christ went to the cross, the need for judgment and eternal punishment went out the window. Since Christ died, everyone is reconciled, and no one goes on to be eternally separated from God. According to Young’s friend Wade Burleson, in a post published on Young’s own website, Young’s universalism is much more of a “hopeful” one: “Paul Young is ‘hopeful’ that the fire of God’s love will eventually and effectually persuade every sinner of God’s love in Christ.” That doesn’t sound like radical universalism to me. If all who profess belief in Jesus as savior don’t hope that the fire of God’s love will persuade every sinner to know Him, then we have no business calling ourselves followers. We have no business evangelizing. In fact, if we aren’t certain that the fire of God’s love is an incomparable, transformative force, then we have no business crediting it with changing our own hearts.

Christians Must Fight to Protect Truth—Now, More Than Ever

Ed Stetzer, a professor at Wheaton College, wrote an article recently called, “ Facts Are Our Friends : Why Sharing Fake News Makes Us Look Stupid and Harms Our Witness.” Stetzer claims that, essentially, when Christians accept fake news, false facts or worse “alternative facts,” we drive a wedge between us and the people we are supposed to reach. Worse still, when we use our own “facts” based on our desires to do something—even if it is good—we are falling short of who God calls us to be (we’re simply lying).

In this blast from the past, J. Warner finishes his examination of the ancient non-canonical writings to see what they say about Jesus. In this episode, J. Warner examines some of the better known (and more controversial) non-canonical texts: The Gospel of Judas, the Gospel of Thomas, and the Gospel of Philip. What does the non-canonical tradition tell us about the true life of Jesus? Why would these writers twist the truth in the first place? Can we have confidence in the New Testament canon? God Drew Near in the NICU

We all too often, as children of God, forget how our union with Christ can impact anyone’s life at any given moment. As Christ dwells in us, he makes known the hope of our glory to the world around us (Colossians 1:27). When someone is in a valley of despair, God powerfully reveals himself through his people to reveal “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). Like Peter and John, God promises to reveal himself through our union with him (Acts 4:13).

God of Love?

Increasingly today, “love” for many involves control and manipulation, seeking maximum self-gratification in return for minimum commitment. It could be argued that this is due, at least in part, to the widespread influence of atheism and naturalistic evolution in public life, particularly in schools. If children are told that there is no God, no ultimate purpose, no universal standard for moral behavior; that they are utterly insignificant, the result of chance chemical interactions on a cosmic stage; that survival of the fittest is the most important factor in the evolution and furtherance of the human race—is it really any wonder that much of society is obsessed with hedonism and violence? This approach to life is the complete opposite of what the Bible teaches about love and its associated humility, mercy, kindness, and faithfulness.

This Unpaid Pensions Case Could Crush Christian Hospitals

The Supreme Court will issue its decision in June. A reversal of the lower court rulings would allow hospitals affiliated with religious institutions to continue to provide their own pension plans outside of ERISA requirements; however, “if the Supreme Court upholds the circuit court decisions, HR professionals working for those organizations may have a relatively short period of time to get their pension plan funding up to where it needs to be,” said Tiffany Downs, an employment benefits attorney.
