Was the Resurrection of Jesus a Late Church Invention?

2. Early Christian Preaching : The book of Acts records the beginning and expansion of the church. Resurrection is mentioned in most of the speeches, which make up roughly one-third of the book. In the first speech in Acts, Peter describes how God appointed Jesus to do wonders but he was killed by lawless men, and yet “God raised him up, loosing the pangs of death, because it was not possible for him to be held by it” (Acts 2:24).

Why Do We Need Apologetics?

I didn’t used to think apologetics was for me. My husband is an apologist, but I thought that was just a particular route Christians could choose to take to evangelize. After listening to him talk for years about how I should learn more about apologetics, though, I finally took his advice. I began to realize that my faith needed a firmer grounding than only my emotions, which is what I had relied upon for most of my life. This realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in apologetics and ethics at Denver Seminary.

Restoration is the Fruit of Rest

We all need rest. We may try to deny or ignore it, but it’s part of our intricate design. God modeled rest for us when He created for six days, and then rested on the seventh. He didn’t need to rest, but He wanted us to see that rest is good. It’s restorative. However, as leaders, rest is often the last thing on our to-do list and the first thing to get pushed to the back burner when something more pressing arises. We are quick to fill our downtime and schedule our Sabbath with “just a few things that need to be done.”

Christ-Centered Friendship

Friendship is vital to our growth and endurance as Christians, but friendship is the type of relationship we do not often learn about in the church. Perhaps friendship is seldom at the forefront because we assume it should develop naturally and happily, whereas brotherly and sisterly love require much supernatural forbearance and practical skill. In the absence of biblical thought and teaching, we tend toward a distorted and often self-oriented understanding of what friendship should be. Therefore, it is important not only that we have and instill in others a deep understanding of biblical friendship but that we also ensure our friendships are centered on Christ.

Why Christian Theology Needs (Former) Atheists

Walter Hooper, C. S. Lewis’s personal secretary, once commented to the great Christian writer about a clever inscription engraved on an atheist’s tombstone: “Here lies an atheist. All dressed up with no place to go.” Not bemused, Lewis quipped: “That atheist probably wishes now that were true.”

Why Are You A Christian? (Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast #16) | Cold Case Christianity

In this episode of the Cold-Case Christianity Broadcast, J. Warner asks an important question: If you’re a Christian, why is this the case? A Case for the Bible 101: Manuscript Evidence Part 1, A Few Important Facts

If you put 10 people in a room and gave them a subject to write about what would you expect the outcome to be? Would you expect them to have the same theme, ideas, storyline, and conclusions? Would they have the same personal beliefs and views on the topic and write with the same convictions? The odds fall strongly in favor of no, but that is not what we see in the Bible:

Multiverse: Is Our Universe One of Many?

Scientists today increasingly talk and write about the multiverse. What is the multiverse? The multiverse is the belief that our universe is just one of many universes. Presumably, each universe exists parallel to and independent of one another. If this sounds like science fiction, philosophy, or religion, it is, because the multiverse could be classified in any one of those categories. Whatever the multiverse is, it definitely is not science. How can the multiverse be scientific (given that science is the study of the natural world using our five senses) when other universes, by definition, are beyond our ability to detect? If the multiverse is not science, why do so many scientists believe in it? The reasons have nothing to do with science but instead are the result of presuppositions and worldview.

What Motivated Early Non-Canonical Writers to Modify the Story of Jesus? | Cold Case Christianity

It shouldn’t surprise us a character as historically important as Jesus would inspire such late fiction. Like George Washington and the story of the cherry tree, later generations of admirers (and people with their own agenda related to Jesus) began to craft their own version of the Jesus story. If Jesus is who He claimed to be, we should expect His life would evoke a number of legendary responses and attempts to co-opt His name. Thousands of years later, it’s sometimes hard to sort the truth from the legend and distortion. We need to take the time to carefully examine the non-canonical tales of Jesus to see if they contain any truth at all, and this begins by understanding what motivated these late authors. The writers of the non-canonical gospels were driven by a number of desires causing them to gently (or dramatically) twist the story of Jesus:

Do The Gospels Disagree About Jesus?

A standard method of attack against the New Testament inerrancy is to pit one or two books against each other.  While this approach has been used with the epistles, it is most often used with the Gospels.  A clear example of this is found in the work of Bart Ehrman.  Both on his blog[1] and in interviews[2], Ehrman insists that Gospels such as Mark and Luke present different, even contradictory depictions of Jesus.  During an interview on the famous show, The Colbert Report, he stated,

41
Is Early Christian Testimony Inadmissible? Should Testimony Be Rejected?

The only legitimate way to dispute the biblical narratives is first to accept the early Christian testimony regardless of the manner in which the writers would identify themselves and then evaluate them as one would any other claim. This would involve the engagement and dissection of the individual claims made therein, and then come to a reasonable conclusion about whether or not they are true. But in order to properly weigh the evidence, the evidence must first be admissible. If one is inclined to reject evidence before adequate consideration, one has already made up his mind before examination – a position that is disingenuous at best, and psychologically self-manipulative at worst. Those who routinely carry out this sort of behavior are not interested in finding the truth; they are more interested in only presuming themselves to be right. What does the a priori rejection of testimony say about the psychological state of the one who is doing the investigation? Is it not a maneuver meant to sustain one’s beliefs against what might potentially be the kind of evidence that might just capsize their ship of beliefs? Not only is it erroneous to dismiss early Christian testimony on grounds of bias but it is also erroneous to reject miracles on grounds of precedence and wrongheaded to dismiss the Bible itself as evidence because of Christian bias .

Heretic: Review of the Newest Book on Intelligent Design

Unlike other recent book on intelligent design (such as Darwin’s Doubt by Stephen Meyer or Undeniable by Doug Axe) this book does not offer a fresh argument for intelligent design. But this is hardly a criticism, because the book does not aim to. Rather, it tells the story of Matti Leisola—an accomplished scientist, professor, and researcher from Finland—and how he became disillusioned with the Darwinian paradigm and came to embrace design.
