Training Day | RZIM Europe

‘Religion poisons everything’ (Christopher Hitchens) Religion appears to be the root cause of many of the problems we see in the world around us today. It not only seems to inspire normal people to do terrible things, like the terrorist attacks we see happening in Europe, but it has also been used to justify all kinds of abhorrent behaviour, from sexism and racism, to slavery and genocide. This intolerance is bad enough, but some would say that the worst thing about religion is that it encourages irrational thought, as well as an anti-scientific attitude. It is no wonder so many people appeal to the sentiments of John Lennon’s song, ‘Imagine’, which asks to us think of a better world that is free from religion.

2 The Resurrection of Jesus Christ: Infallible Proofs

Christians can have the utmost confidence in the death, burial, and Resurrection of Jesus since God’s Word accurately tells us about these historical events. These central truths of the Christian faith were also witnessed by hundreds of people. Jesus was publicly executed on a Cross, buried in Joseph’s tomb ( Mark 15:42–47 ), and seen alive again by more than 500 people at the same time. The post-Resurrection appearances of Jesus are infallible proofs that He conquered death and God’s Word the infallible proof of the event in our world today. Our next article in the series will look at several other pieces of evidence related to the Resurrection, which will be followed by several articles examining many of the alternative views developed by critics and skeptics to explain away the Resurrection.

Report: Yoga Pants Are Polluting the Oceans

The athleisure movement is doing more than stirring weird theological debates : It might be hurting the planet’s oceans. Researchers at the Mississippi-Alabama Sea Grant Consortium have taken part in a two-year study, and found that microscopic plastics are now increasingly common in the area where their study took place on the Gulf Coast. They could also be harming ocean life and contaminating seafood.

What Is the Unique Worldview of Students Today? Interview with Dr. Jeff Myers.

MYERS: I think it’s a huge, huge mistake when people say that. Apologetics and worldview training are more important than ever—and students seem to engage with them more than ever. It is different, though. They need to know how their thoughts and feelings fit with how God created reality. They won’t engage unless it affects them personally. They won’t engage unless they can imagine how they can be credible talking with their friends. They won’t engage unless they feel safe—that the adults in their lives really care and won’t be scared off when they hear about what they’re really dealing with. They won’t engage unless they have a chance to talk and ask questions as well as process new information.

The Gospel of James: Open Letter to Martin Luther

Apart from simply tracing the gospel-word concept through this key section in chapter 1, we should note good-news revelations made of God and his good-news promises. Consider just the specific expressions of grace to weary souls in chapter 1. For those lacking wisdom, God “gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5). To the one who keeps the faith in trial, “he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).

3 Lies Students Believe About Freedom That Will Ruin Their Lives - Jonathan Morrow

“In the “modern” condition, feeling will come to exercise almost total mastery over the individual. This is because people in that condition will have to constantly decide what they want to do, and feeling will be all they have to go on. Here lies the secret to understanding contemporary Western life and its peculiar proneness to gross immoralities and addictions. People are overwhelmed with decisions and can only make those decisions on the basis of feelings.”

http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2017/april/moral-relativism-is-dead.html

Many Christian preachers, apologists, evangelists, and writers have taken heed of the declining numbers, but decades of pitting “Christian worldview” against “moral relativism” left habits that are hard to break. You’ll still hear Christians assume that the reason for so much rampant immorality in our culture is because people reject objective right and wrong. Many still assume that discussions over morals are likely to end with, “Well, that’s your truth, but I have mine.” Make no mistake: Disputes over morality are as strong as they have ever been. But if we view these disputes through the lens of “moral relativism,” it’s not only our understanding of our culture that will suffer. Our evangelistic witness will also be severely blunted.

How Passion Primes the Case for Christianity

As a cold-case detective and part of a three generation law enforcement family, I’ve got a secret I’d like to share with you: the majority of criminal (and civil) cases are won or lost well before the opening statements or closing arguments. Most cases are decided at jury selection . You can have a great case but lose miserably if you don’t have the right jury. That’s why prosecutors and defense attorneys specialize (or hire specialists) in jury selection. Both sides are looking for jurors who aren’t biased against some important aspect of their case; better yet, each side wants a jury inclined to agree with their position, even before they start the trial. A lot of effort is expended trying to figure out which twelve people (from the larger jury pool) should be selected. Case makers use surveys and questionnaires to ask important questions of each juror as they try their best to sort through the candidates. No one wants to present a criminal case to a group that hasn’t been carefully screened, questioned and examined. If case makers fail to assemble the right jury, their efforts to articulate and argue the case will be meaningless.

It has been widely held among many sincere and well-meaning Christians that Charles Darwin on his deathbed not only renounced evolution, but also accepted Jesus Christ as his savior. The overzealous have, at times, boldly proclaimed, “See—even Darwin knew that this theory was not true!”

The Goal of Apologetics: Come and See

All skeptics enter into theological discussions with myriad interests, backgrounds, and wounds. To truly address their question, one must truly hear their question. That is, one must listen with the goal of understanding, not just the goal of responding. This requires as much love as learning, as much empathy as answers. In Nathanael’s case, his question regarding Jesus’ hometown has at least two aspects: cultural and theological.

Cracking The Movie Code On The Case For Christ

It was a September Sunday morning in 2015 when my friend Lee Strobel raised the idea of adapting his best-selling, non-fiction book, The Case for Christ , into a movie.  We were chewing the fat together at Mission Hills Church in Littleton, CO, following the service at which he had just spoken.  It had been a few years since we had last seen each other and I had gone to hear him give the weekend message for old time’s sake.  When he broached the film, I wagged my head enthusiastically and said “absolutely.”  Truth is, I’d be happy just digging a ditch with Lee Strobel – let alone make a movie about him.

You know it’s so hard for people to trust nowadays. I wanted him to see that I was someone who is more concerned about building a friendship than trying to gain anything else.”

Objections to Apologetics: Just Evangelize

Some see a sharp divide between apologetics and evangelism. Here, I’m using evangelism to mean people “gossiping the Gospel,” sharing the good news. Abraham Kuyper referred to it as “witnessing.” Why do apologetics? It’s the Gospel that saves, isn’t it? Just share the simple good news. That’s all we need to do. Why get caught up in all these other questions about Christianity? Just stick to telling them about Jesus. That’s what the unbeliever needs, not all these other issues.

The Big Lie Everyone Believes About Having Kids

About a week before I found out that I was pregnant with my first child, one of my college roommates and best friends asked me to be the maid of honor in her wedding. I was so touched and gave her an enthusiastic yes. Then I learned my due date. It was literally the day of her wedding, which unfortunately, was 1,000 miles away. She was gracious and understood, of course, but that experience was a crash course in a truth that I have learned over and over again since: Having a baby changes friendships. For better or for worse, it just does.

The Benedict Option: The Christian Option

The rest of the book includes specific ways Dreher believes these principles can be applied to Western Christianity. He advocates for a “new kind of Christian politics” (Chapter 4) that does not ultimately trust in the political system to effect change, but rather recognizes that change will occur only as Christians intentionally separate themselves from the corruption of the culture and instead actively invest in building distinctly Christian structures and communities. The solution is to look inward before we can effectively look outward; it is to rediscover the past including liturgical practices, which form the church, and church discipline, which protects the true purity of the church (Chapter 5). These will help us recover true beauty and morality, which themselves are the best apology for Christianity and are thereby potently evangelistic. Some of the other Christian “structures” Dreher discusses include the family (Chapter 6), education (Chapter 7), vocation (Chapter 8), sexuality (Chapter 9), and technology (Chapter 10). He provides many practical suggestions for how Christians can live out these principles in each of these areas; most of them are exactly right and very helpful.

Rather, these commands are prescriptions written by the Good Physician to help us escape from chronic bouts of discouragement.

Couldn’t God Have Used Evolution?

I am fairly at a loss to comprehend how anyone, for a moment, can doubt that Christian theology must stand or fall with the historical trustworthiness of the Jewish Scriptures. The very conception of the Messiah, or Christ, is inextricably interwoven with Jewish history; the identification of Jesus of Nazareth with that Messiah rests upon the interpretation of the passages of the Hebrew Scriptures which have no evidential value unless they possess the historical character assigned to them. If the covenant with Abraham was not made; if circumcision and sacrifices were not ordained by Jahveh; if the ‘ten words’ were not written by God’s hand on the stone tables; if Abraham is more or less a mythical hero, such as Theseus; the Story of the Deluge a fiction; that of the Fall a legend; and that of the Creation the dream of a seer; if all these definite and detailed narratives of apparently real events have no more value as history than have the stories of the regal period of Rome—what is to be said about the Messianic doctrine, which is so much less clearly enunciated: And

If we are thirsty, we don’t head to the oven to find something to quench our thirst. No, we run to the faucet. We find a water source that will meet our need. Similarly, if we are dead, dry, and weary, we don’t run to a desert land of self-pity and work-harder. No, we run to Jesus who says, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink” (John 7:37). He invites us to come because he is the only source that will provide true and lasting satisfaction. He refreshes and meets our deepest needs.

‘Song to Song’ Is Cinematic Wisdom Literature

“I thought we could just roll and tumble, live from song to song, kiss to kiss,” says Rooney Mara in the line which gives the film its title. Mara plays Faye, a restless hipster trying to make it in the Austin music scene. Like many in her generation, she is “desperate to feel,” open to anything (“I told myself any experience is better than no experience.”), and prefers brokenness to boredom (“I loved the pain. It felt like life.”). She experiences the pangs of transcendence in a secular age, desiring “to escape from every tie, every hold… to go up higher.” Her search for bird-like freedom (no surprise for Malick fans: birds are a major presence in the film) leads her to a meandering existence—not unlike an eclectic Spotify playlist—with nothing but mood and whim to guide her choices.

How Singleness Can Testify to the Gospel of Grace | Stand to Reason

By foregoing marriage now, singleness is a way of both anticipating this reality and testifying to its goodness. It’s a way of saying this future reality is so certain that we can live according to it now. If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency. It’s a way of declaring to a world obsessed with sexual and romantic intimacy that these things are not ultimate, and that in Christ we possess what is.

There’s No Crying on Social Media!

In her interviews, Freitas found that college students have an overwhelming urge to present themselves as successful and happy. Many reported that it was nearly unthinkable to present themselves in any other fashion. They were all shockingly aware of the watchful eyes of their peers—and of the corresponding need to routinely spiff up their profiles. Freitas’s concern is that young adults too rarely experience anything like genuine vulnerability. Like anyone else, they endure stretches of suffering, fear, and failure, but they’re afraid of discussing them candidly.
