The Ben-Hur Trailer Is Finally Here and It Is Awesome

Ben-Hur, the upcoming historical epic film directed by Timur Bekmambetov, finally has a trailer. And it looks freaking awesome. Ben-Hur is falsely accused Jewish nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his Roman best friend, who betrayed him. The trailer teases some intense moments as well as alludes to some of the faith themes you'd expect from this story. Check it out:

The Theology of Donald Trump

I am not a politician, but a minister who teaches theology. As a citizen of this great republic, I have convictions about domestic and foreign policy, but none of that qualifies me to join the fray of political experts and pundits. I am qualified, however, to engage the topic of significant support among self-identified “evangelical voters” for Donald Trump and what this means, not for the country but what it suggests about significant segments of the US church.

The Case for Christianity Answer Book - Kindle edition by Lee Strobel. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Lee Strobel has done it again. Not only has he added another stand-alone gem to his timeless “Case for” canon he’s also included in essence a short form “Best of” edition with his newest The Case for Christianity Answer Book mining select nuggets from his other award-winning works. The copy is crystal clear, concise, and insightful – taking 60 challenging questions ranging from science, suffering and the Bible which engage the deep truths of the historic Christian faith in an easy to understand way. And like all of Strobel’s “Case for” collection the content is applicable both to a person who is not a follower of Christ (Strobel was a Yale trained big city award-winning newspaper editor and avowed atheist well into his adult life) or for a believer wanting to grow deeper in the truthfulness of Christianity or answer challenges they will likely encounter in various media formats or conversations with family, friends, neighbors, students or co-workers. Author/speaker Mark Mittelberg, Batman’s Robin, is credited with key contributions in producing this resource.

8 Love No Matter What - Biola University

Jesus challenges his followers to do something that is never easy and always countercultural: love your enemies (Matt. 5:44). And in today’s polarized world, where entrenched battle lines are drawn on issues ranging from sex to politics to race, the call to love the “other side,” no matter what, is harder than ever.

Let Not Your Hearts Be Troubled

Besides, when the time arrived for their homecoming, he would come back for them “and take you to be with me where I am” (John 14:3). Then, in case they were afraid that there would be no room for them, he adds, “In my Father’s house are many rooms” (John 14:2). Such a fear, in them and in us, would be perfectly understandable. How could they expect to live in his Father’s house? But he sets all such fears aside, and he makes his wishes even clearer in John 17:24 when he prays, “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory.”

William Lane Craig debates atheist Lawrence Krauss: Does God Exist?

Krauss tried to argue that he had explained the fine-tuning with the Higgs particle, but Dr. Craig said that only applied to the cosmological constant, not all the other examples of fine-tuning. Krauss said that it wasn’t impressive that this universe permitted life and that “It would have been much more surprising if we evolved in a universe in which we couldn’t live”. Krauss argued the fine-tuning was only for “Life like us”. But Dr. Craig explained that the fine-tuning is what allows us to have the basics of any kind of life, like slow-burning stars, chemical diversity, etc. – things that are required for basic minimal life functions in any living system. Craig said that he was working with the current physical laws of this universe (F = ma, etc.) and that he was looking at what changed if we changed those even slightly. Krauss tried to say that if he changed things like the mass of particles then the strength of forces would change. (But the forces aren’t laws!) Krauss argued that the cosmological constant would be even better for life if it was zero, and Craig said that the life permitting range did include zero, but that the range of life-permitting values was narrow.

Why I Go To Church Even When I Don’t Feel Like It

I’ve benefitted from the sacrificial commitment and consistency of countless people who have welcomed me into community over the years, and now I recognize the invitation for me to do the same thing for others: to hold that space even on days when I don’t seem to personally benefit from it. When the songs don’t do anything for me, when I don’t want to talk with people about the difficult week I’ve had, or when I’d rather sleep in instead—it is then that I am invited to go to church anyway.

No, God Is Not Disappointed in You

Hi Drew, I'm glad you liked the article, and I thank you for the comment! I very much agree that God uses other people in our lives to grow and heal us. As a matter of fact, I'm a Christian counselor myself, so I lean wholeheartedly on the Holy Spirit leading me when I speak with clients. Perhaps I should have left out the word, "only." What I meant by the phrase, is that God is the source of our transformation and our greatest help. Also, that He offers us the help that we don't have in ourselves, so we turn to Him in awareness that He (rather than we) is the one to do what we can't. And when we get significant help from others, He is the influence behind it. Thanks for sharing though, as I wouldn't want anyone to miss out on getting outside support from God's family, since He truly wants us to be blessed in that capacity.

23
What We Get Wrong About 'Finding God's Will'

Yes, but...it seems to me that this article, or perhaps the book upon which it is based, is nearly courageous. What if the author took one more step toward an epiphany, and realized God may not have a specific end in mind for each individual? This, I believe to be true, but it's also the final piece of the puzzle needed to complete the picture. God equips us with talents and gifts, skills and wisdom, education and experience, and he says, "Now go do something. Anything, in which you can fully immerse and empty yourself and which will glorify me." That is the beautiful, liberating, permission-giving, empowering message of truth the author almost gives. And if we so engage, we will, as the author promises, see God on the way.

How to Reach Your Friends Who Don’t Believe

I agree with a lot of this but I've found that Holy Spirit is the best evangelist, he knows exactly what the person needs to hear and if we're listening, amazing things can happen. Most of the entire Bible defies logic and reason and God does that on purpose, but sometimes Paul reasoned with people and they believed, other times it was a prophetic word or a healing or word of knowledge that made people feel known and loved by God. We need to listen closely to Him to know what to do. Also, none of any of this really works if real love towards a person isn't at the root of it, which needs to be cultivated and developed with God on your own time. Yes God gave us powerful brains and gives us wisdom, but remember our weapons aren't carnal but are in the spirit! Which is freedom because we don't have to bear the immense pressure of the entire world's salvation, it's His, and we simply have the privilege of letting Him carry it through us.

25
Actually, Most Evangelicals Don’t Vote Trump

Across all the states, the March 15 elections showed that, on average, a super-majority of 60 percent of evangelicals voted for someone other than Trump. Furthermore, there continues to be strong evidence that the more religious a voter is, the less likely they are to support Donald Trump. For example, in Missouri exit polls, which tracked church attendance, Trump performed much worse than Ted Cruz. Of those who attend religious services “more than once a week,” Cruz garnered 56 percent of the vote, outpacing Trump by a full 26 percentage points. Among those who attend religious services once a week, Cruz earned 50 percent of the vote, which was a full 17 points above Trump.

Remembering When Mother Teresa Left Hillary Clinton in Stunned Silence on Abortion

And if we accept that a mother can kill even her own child, how can we tell other people not to kill one another? How do we persuade a woman not to have an abortion? As always, we must persuade her with love and we remind ourselves that love means to be willing to give until it hurts. Jesus gave even His life to love us. So, the mother who is thinking of abortion, should be helped to love, that is, to give until it hurts her plans, or her free time, to respect the life of her child. The father of that child, whoever he is, must also give until it hurts.

Bacteria Have ‘Biological Wheels’ That We Can Finally See In 3D

To capture these images, a team of researchers, headed by Morgan Beeby at Imperial College London, used a technique called electron cryotomography. The Non-Partisan Politics of Jesus

When Joshua was by Jericho, he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing before him with his drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us, or for our adversaries?” And he said, “No; but I am the commander of the army of the LORD. Now I have come.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth and worshiped and said to him, “What does my lord say to his servant?” And the commander of the LORD’ss army said to Joshua, “Take off your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. (Joshua 5:13–15)

How Your Habits Show and Shape Your Heart

The power of habit not only keeps us from the folly of bad decisions; it can also transform spiritual exercises, like Bible meditation and prayer, from exhausting ourselves with Martha’s tiring exertions to coming alive through Mary’s life-giving receptions of grace (Luke 10:38–42). If we had to learn Bible meditation and prayer all over again each time we engaged, we’d be continually distracted, anxious, and troubled by our own doing. But forming good habits can make Bible intake and prayer into opportunities to sit at Jesus’s feet, and listen to his voice, and choose the good portion that will never be taken away.

The Most Important Question in Politics: Was Ted Cruz the Lead Singer of Stryper?

Or, is it really Ted Cruz throwing us off his scent? No, that would be crazy—wouldn't it? Regardless, it's great to see metal musicians and politicians get along. It really emphasizes the fact that the human spirit is the thread that bonds us together—ok but seriously, they're probably the same person.

Why We Need Flawed Superheroes

What we love about flawed heroes is that they try. Sometimes they fail. When they fail, they own their mistakes and they work to fix them. They don’t pretend they are perfect. Neither should we. We don’t have to fake being something we are not. We can be real. We can share that realness with others. God can use that realness to change lives, including our own. When we stop trying to convince everyone else that we are perfect, then Jesus can actually make us a little more like Him.

How Does Jihad Compare with Old Testament Warfare?

This question deserves much deeper treatment than I can give it here, particuarly regarding the presence of God’s grace even in the Old Testament and Jesus’s role in present and eschatological judgment. But when we compare apples to apples, we see there is a great difference between Islamic jihad and Old Testament violence. An increasing trajectory of jihad was the model of Muhammad until the day he died, and he is the exemplar for Muslims. It was enjoined upon them—the best people among humanity—in the Qur’an’s final commands so that Islam could prevail over all other religions. Early and classical Muslims interpreted jihad accordingly, systematizing it into a doctrine and ultimately coming to dominate one-third of the known world.

Quick Thoughts on Evangelism and Church Planting in Secular Contexts

In a secular milieu, even an elementary knowledge of Christianity “its history, teachings, sacred texts, and formative figures” dwindles. It is no longer a matter of rejecting Christian teachings; large numbers of people have not the vaguest knowledge of what those teachings are. This is a remarkable development when one considers how foundational Christianity is to the entire story of Western culture. The more widespread the ignorance of Christianity, the greater the prejudice against Christianity. Thus people who do not know the difference between Saul of Tarsus and John Calvin are quite certain that Christianity has been tried and convicted as a religion of oppression. When such people do get interested in religion or “spirituality””their interest being a natural reaction to the shallowness of a secularist culture”they frequently turn not to Christianity but to “alternative religions.” In this cultural circumstance, it is not easy to communicate the Christian message.

Glenn Reynolds: How David Brooks created Donald Trump

The thing is, we had that movement. It was the Tea Party movement. Unlike Brooks, I actually ventured out to “intermingle” with Tea Partiers at various events that I covered for PJTV.com, contributing commentary to the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Examiner . As I reported from one event in Nashville, “Pundits claim the tea partiers are angry — and they are — but the most striking thing about the atmosphere in Nashville was how cheerful everyone seemed to be. I spoke with dozens of people, and the responses were surprisingly similar. Hardly any had ever been involved in politics before. Having gotten started, they were finding it to be not just worthwhile, but actually fun. Laughter rang out frequently, and when new-media mogul Andrew Breitbart held forth on a TV interview, a crowd gathered and broke into spontaneous applause. A year ago, many told me, they were depressed about the future of America. Watching television pundits talk about President Obama's transformative plans for big government, they felt alone, isolated and helpless. That changed when protests, organized by bloggers, met Mr.

Aberdeen and Exeter Missions   Last month, the RZIM team and OCCA students left to help Christian Unions with their missions week at Exeter and Aberdeen universities. In Aberdeen, many students signified that they had made a commitment to Christ during the week.   RZIM Itinerant, Jo Vitale said, “There are many more who are still seeking, and who will be attending the follow-up course. One searching student texted this message  “I’ve been three times this week and have had the best time! I’m agnostic and they look at it from my perspective too. Not pushy, really insightful and I’ve been blown away by how amazing the speakers have been, as well as how nice all of the people in the CU are!”   Through daily lunch bars, one on one discussions, activities, and campus-wide events, many had their questions answered and made visible steps toward faith in Jesus Christ.     “The most exciting day was Friday! All three lunch events were absolutely full, with around 9 ‘count me ins’. One of our OCCA fellows, Mari, prayed with a Romanian girl to become Christian.

Lives like mine, stories like mine, are often unheard of in a world where abortion is still talked about as a simple choice or a woman's right.  Thankfully, however, the truth about abortion and its consequences for children, women, men, families, and our communities as a whole is coming to light.  The truth about abortion survivors is that I'm far from alone.  Although we mourn the loss of nearly 57 million lives to abortion since Roe v. Wade was passed, we also celebrate the lives of those who have survived.

Resources to Help You Defend the Deity of Jesus

Skepticism related to Jesus of Nazareth generally takes one of two forms: those who don’t even believe He ever existed, and those who acknowledge Jesus as an historical figure but deny He is God. The case for the Deity of Christ is centered on the Resurrection, but there are many other cumulative circumstantial factors to consider. I’ve written quite a bit about the Deity of Jesus, and I’ve assembled these articles to help you make the collective case. All these resources are available as downloadable PDF files:
