The Nature of Apologetics

Of the options surrounding the world of apologetics, is there a method that answers the honest questions of the lost and the saved? There is, and it’s the method developed by our co-founder Norman Geisler. The Classical method of apologetics, according to Geisler, is a 12-step process that allows an evangelist to engage a person in any stage of doubt. How do we define truth? That is a question all human beings, Christian or non-Christian, must answer, for it is the foundation for any cogent conversation between two rational beings. Or maybe someone does not struggle with his definition of truth. Instead, he struggles with the existence of God, and therefore believes that miracles are impossible. Then the Christian can present his or her arguments for the existence of God and establish that this divine being is actively involved in the day-to-day of man. Finally, the 12-step method also addresses the concerns of fellow believers. Many Christians may have no problem believing that Jesus is the Son of God, that he died on the Cross for their sins, and that he was resurrected, ascended to heaven, and will return one day.

Trump CPAC Speech: Billy Graham, Arming Teachers and the Snake Song

CP compiled a list of seven major points Trump addressed at the Conservative Political Action Conference at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland, Friday morning. They included arguing for concealed carry for teachers who want to be licensed to do so, his thoughts on Billy Graham's legacy, and a snake song about illegal immigration that Trump said people had requested he share at CPAC.

Remembering Billy Graham (1918-2018)

Dwight Moody's appeal is harder to figure. Of grandfatherly mien, he was portly and genial. He preached less about sin and more about love. All the old drawings of him in the pulpit give the impression he must have been stolid and ponderous. Yet it was Moody—more than Whitefield, Finney, and Sunday put together—who was Billy Graham's true predecessor. It was Moody whom Graham admired; Moody who, in fact, made it possible for Graham to do what he did. For "Crazy" Moody was the architect who drew up the plans and laid the foundation for 20th-century evangelicalism. Then Billy Graham took over the project and built it to dimensions beyond any of Moody's craziest dreams. By the start of the 21st century, the Moody-Graham project had reshaped the skyline of American Christianity and had launched a new kind of ecumenical movement that reached into every corner of the globe.

Here Is How Evolutionists Respond to the Evidence

Mutations are rare and good ones are even more rare. One reason mutations are rare is because there are sophisticated error correction mechanisms in cells. So according to evolution, random mutations created correction mechanisms to suppress random mutations. And that paradox is only the beginning. That is because error correction mechanisms, as with pretty much everything else in biology, require many, many mutations to be created.

Persuasion versus Argument in Apologetics

The good news when it comes to evangelism and apologetics is that Jesus does not call us to argue with people in a contentious manner, but rather to seek to persuade. The good news of Jesus was never spread through quarreling, but through persuasion. Persuasion can be defined as the art of speaking to people who are indifferent or resistant to what we have to say, and moving them closer to our position.[1] Returning to 1 Peter 3:15-16 we note several principles regarding persuasion in apologetics:[2]

21 Benny Hinn Says He's Guilty of Taking the Prosperity Gospel Outside of What the Bible Teaches

Yesterday, televangelist Benny Hinn recorded an extended Facebook Live video  (the comments start around the 9:30 mark), discussing the legacy of Billy Graham, who died yesterday at the age of 99. And, along with talking about Graham’s influence on himself and his ministry, Hinn also got surprisingly candid about his philosophy on the so-called “prosperity gospel.”

Developing an Agile Apologetic

eaching Christian apologetics at Denver Seminary since 1993 has taught me much. Much of what I write was first sparked or sharpened in the classroom. For years I have advised students to practice intellectual and relational dexterity that deftly marshals apologetic resources in different situations. I call this art agile apologetics . Just as an agile shortstop in baseball can jump, run, and throw from any position, so must an apologist be agile in arguments. As Paul told his mentee, Timothy, “Preach the word; be prepared in season and out of season ; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction” (2 Tim. 4:2, emphasis added; all Scripture references NIV). Whether our task is easy or hard, complicated or simple, we must be ready (1 Pet. 3:15).

Asserting Truth Requires God

18 Reasons Christian Leaders Should Be Apologists

1. Just as theology flows naturally from worship and confession, apologetics is the natural outcome of evangelism. At some point the Christian moves from proclaiming the Gospel to persuading the unbeliever; once this move takes place, the Christian has moved from evangelism to apologetics. In any case, the unbeliever will soon ask “why should I take anything you say seriously?” The Christian will have to state some reason for the hope that is within him; so his answer had better be good.

New Critique of Theistic Evolution: Interview with Author J.P. Moreland

J.P. MORELAND: At my age, I realize daily that I have less time than I used to and I want to make my time count. And as a Barna research study showed, one of the six top reasons people—especially young people—are leaving the church is that the church is not keep up with or teaching people how to interact with science. The sad thing is that Christian scholars are, in fact, doing just this, and the quality of Christian literature is getting better and better when it comes to showing that the Bible gets it right and both theistic and naturalistic evolution are rationally inferior to Intelligent Design theory theologically, philosophically and scientifically. But people don't know this, so a group of us decided to do the book Theistic Evolution: A Scientific, Philosophical and Theological Critique.

The Evangel-ist

The story of Billy Graham's conversion is well known. In the fall of 1934, Mordecai Ham, a Kentucky-born Baptist revivalist, came to Charlotte and preached a powerful sermon. The revival stretched over weeks, and for the first week or so, the Grahams didn't attend. Billy was persuaded to check out Ham by Albert McKain, one of his father's most trusted employees. There, in response to Ham's powerful teachings about sin, Billy famously made a decision for Christ. Later that night, standing in the Grahams' breakfast room with fixings for a sandwich, Billy shared his experience with his family: Putting down his sandwich, he turned to Morrow and said, "Oh, Mother, I've been saved tonight." In a 1976 interview, Billy's sister Catherine recalled some of the subtle ways his conversion changed him: He no longer wanted to go to the movies, and he was nicer to his siblings. Doubtless, Billy's sense that stirring preaching could inspire a dramatic personal commitment to Christ inspired his own lifelong ministry.

God raised Billy Graham up at a specific time and specific place to exalt Jesus. This Christian hero came to Jesus “just as he was,” and he dedicated his entire life to telling others that, really, that’s the only way for any of us to come to Jesus:

Someday You Will Read or Hear That Billy Graham Didn’t Really Say That

Some day you will read in the papers that D. L. Moody, of East Northfield, is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it! At that moment I shall be more alive than I am now. I shall have gone up higher, that is all; out of this old clay tenement into a house that is immortal—a body that death cannot touch; that sin cannot taint; a body fashioned like unto His glorious body.

Thoughts on urgency and apologetics

I am often moved to prayer when I look at that view, for that mass of sparkling lights represents over a million people and many of them aren’t aware there is a God who truly loves them. When I look at that huge expanse of sky, I can’t help think how small we truly are compared to God and how just one drop of His glory could flood a city. Yet despite this, Jesus called us to spread His glory, to share His good news in the darkening world we live in (Matthew 28:18-20). The Bible exhorts us to be ready in season and out with the reason for our faith (1 Peter 3:15). Much of God’s glory is found in what we do and what we say. God gave us the honour of being part of His story by both living it and sharing it. His works in our lives create rich narratives of incredible love and redemption and are always, always meant to be shared.

Does Evidence Take Away from the Bible's Authority?

Christians have always been extremely wary of holding anything, such as philosophy or “reason” or evidence, as an authority over Scripture. It is sometimes argued that if one appeals to something as a reason to believe Scripture, then that thing becomes one’s authority. But, for the Christian, nothing can stand in authority over Scripture. Thus, we cannot use reason and evidence as our basis for believing the claims of Scripture.

Why Faith in God Is Not Stupid

How do we know God exists? The go-to Sunday School answer is faith, but is that really a legitimate way to know? Is there any difference between having faith in the God of the Bible or faith in the Flying Spaghetti Monster? Is faith just choosing something to believe in even if there is no evidence or logic to prove it? These and similar questions are often posed as a challenge to Christianity. To answer these questions, I want to go behind these objections and begin by tackling the underlying question: how can we know anything? Many men and women have wrestled with this question throughout history. Generally speaking, responses can be lumped into one of three categories.

Will God Ever Give Us More Than We Can Handle?

When Paul says he won’t give what is beyond what you are able, he means, not beyond what you are able with God’s help . We know that because of a couple of other things he says. For example, in 2 Corinthians 9:8 he says, “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” In other words, in every test or temptation, the question is, “Will I do what I ought to do?” And Paul says, “There will be grace,” not just, “I am depending on you to use your resources without depending on grace.” “I am giving you grace so there will be grace to do it. But you are not independent of my powers to help.”
