The Dark Side of Small Group

I noticed in your last letter that you have been trying to separate the rodent from his little pack with whom he does “accountability.” Your reasoning, although sophomoric, tends towards rational thought. Men and women, walking together in that unbearable “light,” tend to be just beyond our dagger’s reach. Often an entire month’s work is undermined by the Enemy dragging the patients out of our shadows through the intervention of one of his fellow vermin.

5 Things I Wish Christians Would Admit About the Bible

I totally disagree with the author of this article. The Bible is God in written form.Psalms 138:2 says,You have exalted your word above your name.Isaiah 55:11 says "so is my word that goes from my mouth:it will not return to me empty but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."If the Bible was just a collection of books why has it withstood the test of time?do you know of any other collection of books that makes men cry and women burned at the stake leaving their children behind? As an African believer this article appalls me.Part of the Bible was dictated by God.For this reason there are specific areas where God says'This is the word of the Lord that came to the prophet Isaiah etc.At the end of it all this article is just another opinion but the Bible ,is God's word whether you agree or not is irrelevant.

T here’s a lot of porn in the world. When I first began to write the articles that would become Sexual Detox , this sin was still lurking in the shadows. The Story of Reality

In the genre of apologetic writings, it can be difficult to find new books that aren’t covering the same set of arguments in slightly various ways. While this is not bad in itself – most offer fresh angles and insights into the same “old” arguments – The Story of Reality is a breath of fresh air. Often when reading, I find I hear the voice of the author speaking the text in my head because the writing style parallels the authors speaking style. Such was not the case with this. However Greg Koukl devised to write this text, it is a uniquely fresh and enjoyable read. It covers a lot of ground in a thorough yet winsome way. The arguments are basic and clear without getting bogged down in details.

Is the Qur’an Credible? - Christian Research Institute

The Qur’an is replete with questionable ethics—particularly when it comes to the equality of women. For example, in Sura 4:3 Muhammad allegedly received a revelation from God allowing men to “marry women of your choice, two, three, or four.” Ironically, in Sura 33:50 Muhammad receives a divine sanction to marry “any believing woman who dedicates her soul to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to wed her.” Thus, while other men were only permitted to marry up to four wives, Allah provided Muhammad with a divine exception for his marriage to at least twelve women—including Aishah, who was nine years of age when Muhammad consummated his marriage to her (Sahih Al-Bukhari, volume 5, #234). Also troubling is the fact that the Qur’an allows men to “beat” (lightly) their wives in order that they might “return to obedience” (Sura 4:34). When we compare the personal morality of Muhammad in the Qur’an with that of Jesus in the Bible, the difference is remarkable. The Qur’an exhorts Muhammad to ask “forgiveness for thy fault” (Sura 40:55). Conversely, Christ’s ethics with regard to every aspect of life—including His treatment of women—were so unimpeachable that He could rightly ask: “Can any of you prove me guilty of sin?” ( John 8:46; 2 Corinthians 5:21; 1 John 3:5).

Pensées - Short Thoughts on Various Topics Part 2 | Stand to Reason

If one means that the Trinity is irrational, that it violates some law of reason, then the challenge is simply false. There is no violation of the laws of reason in the Trinity. A Curious Clue About the Origins of the New Testament Canon

The Globe Is Warming, But It’s Not Your Fault!

Though it is relatively easy to estimate the amount of heat that greenhouse gases absorb and emit back toward the earth (climatologists call this “forcing”), it is much more difficult to determine how the planet will adjust to the additional heat (climatologists call this “feedback”). Essentially all the current climate models have overestimated the global temperature in the past and future. Many climatologists believe that there are stronger positive feedbacks within the climate than negative feedbacks. In other words, they believe that the climate amplifies warming caused by greenhouse gases rather than moderating it. If that were true, why hasn’t the global temperature already gone out of control? Negative feedback systems, like the thermostat in your house, are known to lead to stability; whereas positive feedback systems often lead to instability, like the deafening audio feedback when a speaker and a microphone are put too close together. It seems more likely that our climate is dominated by negative feedbacks since Earth’s temperature has been amazingly stable for at least 2,000 years with only a 1.

Discovering the Truth: Cold-Case Christianity for Kids

Am I Really Ready for Heaven?

The major question of life is: What must I do to be in Christ so that his life, his death counts for me? What must I do to be saved from my sins like this? What must I do to enjoy the hope of heaven and eternal life and joy in God’s presence like this? And the glorious, biblical, New Testament, gospel answer is: You don’t do anything to earn it. You don’t do anything to show yourself good enough to have it. Christ has already done what needs to be done. What we must do is stop doing in order to earn anything and, instead, receive. That is the key word. Receive Christ who did all the doing that had to be done as the foundation of our acceptance with God. Any doing that God expects of us now — and he does — any doing that God expects of us now is because we are accepted one hundred percent, not in order to be accepted one percent or any percent. We live out of our acceptance with God, which is through faith in Christ.

The Ontological Argument and an Evil god

I shared a video about the ontological argument that gives the absolute bare-bones of the argument on my Facebook recently. A friend came along and raised a point that that friend said had bothered them for a while. The objection was that could not such an argument be used to argue for the existence of an evil god just as much as for a good God? I typed up a response I would like to also share here.

'Moonlight' Is a Flawed, But Rewarding Exercise in Christian Empathy

Moonlight , which brought home Best Drama Motion Picture at the Golden Globes, takes up both of these issues and has garnered significant attention not only for focusing on them but also for doing so in a compelling way. The film functions more as an exploration into social identity than a commentary on our cultural moment, but it nevertheless paints a compelling picture of what it looks like to be gay, poor, and black through the story of its protagonist, Chiron. For Christians seeking to engage with the film, this premise naturally creates both some challenges and some opportunities.

How to Leverage Moral Outrage for the Gospel

If you take people down this road, you will see how mankind’s universal sense of justice is to the gospel’s advantage. There is only one worldview that provides a justification for belief in inherent human value and thereby true morality. It is theism. A transcendent creator is needed for our sense of justice to have any value. Existence must have been intentional for life to have intrinsic and objective worth. And simply, when we look at the world and say, “That is wrong!” there has to be an eternally fixed “right” for our moral indignation to have any value. Leverage this understanding that all naturally possess and direct them toward the One who is not only the standard of life, but its very essence.

It Doesn’t Pay to Go on Maternity Leave at Most Evangelical Seminaries

Many evangelical seminaries across the United States share these commitments to offering faculty and staff a family-friendly campus. Yet few of these seminaries offer new parents formal benefits beyond the federally mandated Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), which requires that employers with 50 or more staff members offer 12 weeks of unpaid leave for pregnancy, adoption, or illness.

What Does ‘The Shack’ Say About Your Pain?

The Shack is fiction, but don’t think for a minute that Young isn’t clearly and intentionally writing theology. He’s the first to say so. Theology isn’t merely conveyed in abstract propositions. Dozens of literary genres make up the Christian Scriptures. It’s not only the apostle Paul who speaks for God, but also the Psalms and Proverbs and the apocalyptic writings. Jesus himself spoke in stories, called parables. Story is a powerful tool for teaching someone about God and his world. The fact that Young writes a novel doesn’t mean that he’s indifferent to how his readers think about God and their pain. In fact, the key to understanding why so many love his novel is it speaks so vividly about God and pain.

How to Raise Your Kids So They Will Remain in the Faith | Cold Case Christianity

Some good guidance here (please visit Daryl’s post for all the details). The most striking “tip” Daryl offered, however, was #4: Teach your children the Bible and about God. Who wouldn’t agree with this priority? For many of us, however, the challenge seems daunting. Do we know enough about the Bible to teach it to our children? What else do we need to know in order to effectively teach our children about God? Does this also involve making a case for God’s existence and answering the objections they will ultimately face from the culture? I think it does. Several years ago, Jon Nielson , the college pastor at College Church in Wheaton, Illinois wrote an article entitled, Why Youth Stay in Church When They Grow Up . Jon cited three important characteristics of college aged Christians who held on to their faith and were committed to their church family:
