Training Day | RZIM Europe

‘Religion poisons everything’ (Christopher Hitchens) Religion appears to be the root cause of many of the problems we see in the world around us today. It not only seems to inspire normal people to do terrible things, like the terrorist attacks we see happening in Europe, but it has also been used to justify all kinds of abhorrent behaviour, from sexism and racism, to slavery and genocide. This intolerance is bad enough, but some would say that the worst thing about religion is that it encourages irrational thought, as well as an anti-scientific attitude. It is no wonder so many people appeal to the sentiments of John Lennon’s song, ‘Imagine’, which asks to us think of a better world that is free from religion.

Notable Christian Apologist: Anselm by Ted Cabal

Taken from The Apologetics Study Bible, p. 801: Born in what would be modern-day Italy, Anselm (A.D. 1033-1109) was raised by a father who resisted his son's desire for a life of scholarly devotion.  His mother, however, instilled in him a vision and love of God.  Through his unwavering commitment Anselm became not only a Christian scholar but eventually also a celebrated teacher and the archbishop of Canterbury.  Like the earlier scholar and churchman Augustine, Anselm sought to better understand the faith he already believed.  In the classic Why God Became Man , Anselm produced what has become the standard view of the atonement: God alone can satisfy the infinite demands of His righteous wrath-and He graciously does so through the saving work of the God-man, Jesus Christ. Written in a spirit of prayer, Anselm's Proslogian presents one of the most controversial and fascinating arguments for God's existence- the so-called ontological argument (argument from being).  When a fool says in his heart that there is no God (Ps 14:1), he demonstrates that he understands what is meant by the term God, namely "that than which nothing greater can be conceived.

What Is the Unique Worldview of Students Today? Interview with Dr. Jeff Myers.

MYERS: I think it’s a huge, huge mistake when people say that. Apologetics and worldview training are more important than ever—and students seem to engage with them more than ever. It is different, though. They need to know how their thoughts and feelings fit with how God created reality. They won’t engage unless it affects them personally. They won’t engage unless they can imagine how they can be credible talking with their friends. They won’t engage unless they feel safe—that the adults in their lives really care and won’t be scared off when they hear about what they’re really dealing with. They won’t engage unless they have a chance to talk and ask questions as well as process new information.

The Gospel of James: Open Letter to Martin Luther

Apart from simply tracing the gospel-word concept through this key section in chapter 1, we should note good-news revelations made of God and his good-news promises. Consider just the specific expressions of grace to weary souls in chapter 1. For those lacking wisdom, God “gives generously to all without reproach” (James 1:5). To the one who keeps the faith in trial, “he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change” (James 1:17).

Does One Need To Investigate Every Religion Before One Can Conclude That Christianity Is True? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

One does not need to weigh up the arguments pro and con for every single possible alternative that is out there in order to conclude that a certain hypothesis best explains the available data. When multiple independent lines of evidence converge on a single given hypothesis, other possibilities are by nature excluded and it becomes unnecessary to investigate every conceivable candidate hypothesis before one can reach a proper judgment. Of course, one should always be open to the possibility that one’s judgment is mistaken and be prepared to revise conclusions should new information come to light. But one certainly does not need to investigate the tens of thousands of competing religious propositional claims that are out there in order to conclude that Christianity makes sense of the pertinent available data. Moreover, the claim that one has to investigate every religious proposition in order to assert any religious position backfires on the atheist, for it renders it impossible to draw any religious conclusions — including atheism .

Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: This Week's Top Ten Best Sellers!

To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith. The High Cost of Free Porn

The ultimate need of the Christian fighting pornography is not new or better tips, tricks, or tools — it is Christ. For the individual believer whose spiritual pulse has slowed to a crawl, Jesus is the answer; Jesus will rouse the sleeper and strengthen the weak. For the church whose vitality has dimmed, Jesus is the answer; a fresh understanding of the Son of God, obedient to the mission given him by the Father (John 6:38), will strengthen the hands of the elders and members of the congregation. For a movement lagging in missionary zeal, Jesus will restore hope and purpose.

Complaining Never Wins the Culture

Of course, there are some dangers of which we’re all very aware and conscious. In a pluralistic world, we know the pressure on Christians to abandon the truth that Jesus is the only way to God, so we proclaim loudly the exclusive salvation that we find in Christ. In the midst of a moral revolution, we see the temptation for Christians to deny or downplay the truth about sexuality and marriage, so we rightly seek to defend the Bible’s teaching on these issues.

Why Christians Should Care About Ideas

Trevin, the timing of this article could not be better. In our women’s ministry here in Okinawa we just started some basic discipleship. We have just gone from discussing our justification to our sanctification. Because of this, we just entered into “the battle for the mind.” Few of us over here are what you would call “older women,” but two of us that are delivered the “bad news” the other day – the battle for the mind in the times in which we live, never lets up. But we have “the mind of Christ” and the power of the Holy Spirit to combat the lies. May we walk and help one another keep focused on truth even living in the midst of our day. Thank you, Trevin.

Couldn’t God Have Used Evolution?

I am fairly at a loss to comprehend how anyone, for a moment, can doubt that Christian theology must stand or fall with the historical trustworthiness of the Jewish Scriptures. The very conception of the Messiah, or Christ, is inextricably interwoven with Jewish history; the identification of Jesus of Nazareth with that Messiah rests upon the interpretation of the passages of the Hebrew Scriptures which have no evidential value unless they possess the historical character assigned to them. If the covenant with Abraham was not made; if circumcision and sacrifices were not ordained by Jahveh; if the ‘ten words’ were not written by God’s hand on the stone tables; if Abraham is more or less a mythical hero, such as Theseus; the Story of the Deluge a fiction; that of the Fall a legend; and that of the Creation the dream of a seer; if all these definite and detailed narratives of apparently real events have no more value as history than have the stories of the regal period of Rome—what is to be said about the Messianic doctrine, which is so much less clearly enunciated: And

Weary Mom, Come to Me

If we are thirsty, we don’t head to the oven to find something to quench our thirst. No, we run to the faucet. We find a water source that will meet our need. Similarly, if we are dead, dry, and weary, we don’t run to a desert land of self-pity and work-harder. No, we run to Jesus who says, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink” (John 7:37). He invites us to come because he is the only source that will provide true and lasting satisfaction. He refreshes and meets our deepest needs.

‘Song to Song’ Is Cinematic Wisdom Literature

“I thought we could just roll and tumble, live from song to song, kiss to kiss,” says Rooney Mara in the line which gives the film its title. Mara plays Faye, a restless hipster trying to make it in the Austin music scene. Like many in her generation, she is “desperate to feel,” open to anything (“I told myself any experience is better than no experience.”), and prefers brokenness to boredom (“I loved the pain. It felt like life.”). She experiences the pangs of transcendence in a secular age, desiring “to escape from every tie, every hold… to go up higher.” Her search for bird-like freedom (no surprise for Malick fans: birds are a major presence in the film) leads her to a meandering existence—not unlike an eclectic Spotify playlist—with nothing but mood and whim to guide her choices.

How Singleness Can Testify to the Gospel of Grace | Stand to Reason

By foregoing marriage now, singleness is a way of both anticipating this reality and testifying to its goodness. It’s a way of saying this future reality is so certain that we can live according to it now. If marriage shows us the shape of the gospel, singleness shows us its sufficiency. It’s a way of declaring to a world obsessed with sexual and romantic intimacy that these things are not ultimate, and that in Christ we possess what is.

Christ’s Resurrection—Four Accounts, One Reality

Luke declared that after Jesus suffered and died on the Cross, He showed Himself alive “by many infallible proofs” ( Acts 1:3 ). Skeptics will surely continue to question Scripture and neglect reasonable solutions to the dilemmas they propose. It’s hard for them to be open-minded about sensible answers because Christ’s Resurrection, if true, is a miracle that demonstrates Jesus is Lord—a truth contrary to their secular worldview, which rejects miracles and the supernatural. No matter how many objections unbelievers raise, Christians can be confident there are no contradictions in the Word of God.

Resurrection of Jesus Christ Biblical Extra-biblical Evidences

The Bible is the Word of God, so it is accurate in all it affirms. Since it tells us Jesus rose from the dead, we can have complete confidence that He did. What many people fail to recognize is that even when we use the critics’ and skeptics’ own criteria, the most reasonable conclusion is the same: Jesus rose from the dead. That is, even if we did not presume biblical authority and treated the New Testament as unbelieving historians do, the bodily Resurrection of Jesus is the only explanation that matches all the accepted facts. One point will become rather obvious throughout this study: these people simply have an anti-supernatural bias, or more accurately, an anti-Christian bias. Thus, they have developed absurd positions in efforts to explain away the only reasonable conclusion that can be derived from the facts. So what are these facts?

Do You Trust Disney with Your Kids?

Nor is it news that homosexuality has been, and will continue to be, normalized in our society. Disney is not the big bad wolf here in our society’s collective storybooks. Increasingly, it’s Christians who are viewed as the weirdos and bad guys. Genuine believers in Jesus are more and more in the minority, and it’s time for us to stop acting like we think it’s the mass media’s job to cater to us. Our calling as exiles is to go into every movie, song, book, and conversation with our eyes open. We shouldn’t become outraged because of the words of a director, likely looking for publicity, stirred up controversy about his new film. More importantly, we should care more about impacting and shaping the culture we’re in, rather than pharisaically wagging our fingers at it.

How Christ Fulfilled and Ended the Old Testament Regime

The establishment of civil law on the basis of an ethnically rooted people, who are ruled directly by God, has ceased. The people of God are no longer a unified political body or an ethnic group or a nation-state, but are exiles and sojourners among all ethnic groups and all states. Therefore, God’s will for states is not taken directly from the Old Testament theocratic order, but should now be re-established from place to place and from time to time by means that correspond to God’s sovereign rule over all peoples, and that correspond to the fact that genuine obedience, rooted as it is in faith in Christ, cannot be coerced by law. The state is therefore grounded in God, but not expressive of God’s immediate rule.

Gospel Depths: Why God Revealed the Depths of Salvation in Eternity Past

One week-night, when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher’s sermon, for I did not believe it. The thought struck me, “How did you come to be a Christian?” I sought the Lord. “But how did you come to seek the Lord?” The truth flashed across my mind in a moment — I should not have sought Him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek Him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what led me to do so? Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that He was the Author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, “I ascribe my change wholly to God.” ( Autobiography , 164–165)
