Training Day | RZIM Europe

‘Religion poisons everything’ (Christopher Hitchens) Religion appears to be the root cause of many of the problems we see in the world around us today. It not only seems to inspire normal people to do terrible things, like the terrorist attacks we see happening in Europe, but it has also been used to justify all kinds of abhorrent behaviour, from sexism and racism, to slavery and genocide. This intolerance is bad enough, but some would say that the worst thing about religion is that it encourages irrational thought, as well as an anti-scientific attitude. It is no wonder so many people appeal to the sentiments of John Lennon’s song, ‘Imagine’, which asks to us think of a better world that is free from religion.

I Don't Have Enough Faith to Be an Atheist (Foreword by David Limbaugh) - Kindle edition by Norman L. Geisler, Frank Turek, David Limbaugh. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Well written book. Based on the scientific evidence, logic and reason, Geisler and Turek do a good job showing it's more plausible to believe in the design of the universe and the God of the Bible as the Grand Designer, and how it takes much more faith to be an atheist. They begin with 'can truth be known' and progress logically through the scientific evidence, the philosophical, teleological, and moral arguements, and then on to the historical evidence for the reliability of the Bible and who Jesus claimed to be. It's like a compilation of all the other books I've read on Intelligent Design, the Historical Reliability of the Bible, and Jesus' claims - not as in depth, but still very informative. I would recommend this book to anyone who is honestly seeking the truth, regardless of their current worldview.

Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: This Week's Top Ten Best Sellers!

To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith. Lent Should Still Matter to Christians

The first time I observed Lent over 10 years ago, I attended an Ash Wednesday service. Ashes were applied to my head and words were spoken over me, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” I learned in a new way that I am a mere mortal, and at same time created in the image of God. In that moment, something new in my soul began to grow. At the same time, it was, for me, a difficult time of coming to grips with my brokenness, staring at my sin and searching my heart.

What ‘Waiting’ Looks Like When You’ve Already Had Sex

I’ve been married to my husband, Jesse, for five years now. He and I fought really hard to remain pure until we were finally married. And it was so worth it. Some people mocked it, but I didn’t mind. I was secure in the belief that God created intimacy for my husband and him alone. I was content in waiting (even when it got really stinking hard).

Cold-Case Christianity for Kids: Investigate Jesus with a Real Detective - Kindle edition by J. Warner Wallace, Susie Wallace. Children Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

My family first learned of J. Warner Wallace when watching a series of lectures from Summit Ministries. My adult son and I really liked what we saw, and he acquired Cold-Case Christianity. After he read it, I borrowed it from him. And then with us talking about it (and seeing Wallace in God's Not Dead 2), everyone else (my husband and the other two teens) were interested too. So I bought the Kindle and Audible versions. And then... I learned about Cold-Case Christianity for Kids. The best thing about this book might be that it goes along with the adult book so well. I have my teens reading the adult book, and we are working through the "for Kids" book as a group. The Adult Leader Guide helps me to know exactly what meshes between the two books and gives me help in making this work for all of us. And that might be the best thing about this book -- the website. There is so much more than just a book. Each chapter consists of a few different parts. We are using all of them. *There is the chapter itself, which includes plenty of visual appeal. *A notebook sheet (the red link above) that you can use for taking notes on the chapter.

Complaining Never Wins the Culture

Of course, there are some dangers of which we’re all very aware and conscious. In a pluralistic world, we know the pressure on Christians to abandon the truth that Jesus is the only way to God, so we proclaim loudly the exclusive salvation that we find in Christ. In the midst of a moral revolution, we see the temptation for Christians to deny or downplay the truth about sexuality and marriage, so we rightly seek to defend the Bible’s teaching on these issues.

Jesus Did Not Die for ‘Comfortable’

New page, same playbook. But Jesus did not give in to the lie of convenience. Instead, he clung to God’s promise to install a better kingdom. Jesus was there to do his Father’s will (Luke 4:4, 8, 12), not Satan’s (Luke 4:1–13), and not even his own (Matthew 26:36–46). He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45), and nothing — not even the convenience of earthly provision, fame, or an undeniable, self-determined supernatural ministry — could keep the Son from his mission.

What is the Meaning of the Cross? | Cold Case Christianity

The Cross Reconciles (Pays) Our Debt The Bible acknowledges an important truth: all sin must be punished. God is just, and justice requires wrongs to be punished. We know this is true, even in our temporal experience as humans. When we break human laws, we expect to be punished in some way, and this punishment is proportionate to the authority we’ve offended. When we break our parent’s rules, we received one level of punishment; when we break the laws of the federal government, the punishment is appropriately harsher. God also has a set of Holy laws (called “Commandments”). When we violate these laws we offend the greatest of all authorities. Justice must be satisfied if God is to remain just, and the Bible reminds us of the gravity of our violation : our sin is punishable by death. The cross provides a solution, however, and demonstrates the mercy of God, even as it accomplishes His justice . The cross is the place where Jesus (God) paid the price for us, and in doing so, He offered us a way to be united to God, in spite of our moral imperfection:

The High Cost of Free Porn

The ultimate need of the Christian fighting pornography is not new or better tips, tricks, or tools — it is Christ. For the individual believer whose spiritual pulse has slowed to a crawl, Jesus is the answer; Jesus will rouse the sleeper and strengthen the weak. For the church whose vitality has dimmed, Jesus is the answer; a fresh understanding of the Son of God, obedient to the mission given him by the Father (John 6:38), will strengthen the hands of the elders and members of the congregation. For a movement lagging in missionary zeal, Jesus will restore hope and purpose.

As a part of a focus on ‘ conversational apologetics ’ this article seeks to provide a way to confidently outline some important aspects of defending the Bible.

It’s Time to Stop Confusing Blessings With Stuff

When I look around, I see a whole lot of Christians (including leaders) who are cheapening and perverting the Gospel and getting away with it. They’re building their names, gaining a faithful following and making a whole lot of money. Why doesn’t God shut them down? He’s certainly powerful enough to do it. Instead, He lets them prosper while His true disciples are in the trenches, often living from paycheck to paycheck, suffering for the Gospel. I scratch my head and sigh.

What’s ‘Love’ Got to Do With It?

“A lot of times, conflict comes out of how a person gets in the way of themselves,” he says. “All we were trying to do was something that felt truthful, so people having that reaction [that the show’s scenes constantly evoke cringes] it made me think, ‘I guess daily life is just filled with constant awkwardness.’”

Q & A With Dr. Craig: Objections to Belief in God

Dr. Craig: Well, it's interesting, Kevin, this really isn't an argument against the existence of God—this is an argument against having unconditional moral obligations. So this would be a problem for any ethicist who thinks that we do have unconditional moral obligations, which is what most ethicists do believe, that we have an unconditional moral obligation, for example, to treat other persons as ends in themselves, and worthy of respect rather than as means to ends. So this is an important attack upon objective ethics. And I think that it's just clearly mistaken in that a person can be unconditionally obligated to do something morally, but he has the freedom not to do it, he has the freedom to disobey. And that's all that moral freedom requires, is the ability to do immoral things. So if we have unconditional moral obligations – which I think we most certainly do, such as to worship God – nevertheless we have libertarian freedom to not live up to our unconditional moral obligations, to sin and to do wrong and to be immoral…

Why Does the New Testament Cite Extrabiblical Sources?

Here is a further issue in Jude 14–15: Jude is still criticizing the ungodliness of his opponents, and this time he actually quotes a source outside the Bible. He doesn’t say what it is. At least, it looks like a quote. Most people think it is a quote, namely, from 1 Enoch. That is a Jewish book written about 300 B.C. and not regarded as inspired or Scriptural by Protestants or Catholics, and it was not in the Old Testament that Jesus used and endorsed. Jude 14–15 are a fairly close rendition of this verse. That is why most people think it is a quote.

‘Big Little Lies’ Tells the Truth

A mystery as central to the series as its murder whodunit is how each of the major characters will navigate challenges to their sense of self. Each appears to the outside world as an archetype of a certain kind of female but is also savvy to how she is being perceived. Some of the most dramatic scenes show us (often private) moments when a woman’s actions or dialogue break with the expected cultural script for her archetype. For example, Renata the “C-suite” mom voices deep frustration and self-doubt when she’s alone with her husband. Exasperated by how little acceptance she finds among the other moms, she blurts out what she fears everyone in town thinks about her: “What kind of person chooses to work? Certainly not a mother by any acceptable standards.” In that instant my least favorite character became a woman that I know, even a woman that I have been on certain days.

6 Practical Tips to Free Yourself From Your Phone

An easily overlooked piece of gaining control over your phone is actually allowing yourself time to check it. When you budget your money, you don’t ban yourself from spending any money on coffee ever—you just don’t allow yourself to spend all of your money on coffee every day. You budget a certain amount of money for coffee, and you know that you can spend that money freely on coffee without feeling guilty. And this, in turn, eases the temptation to spend any of your other money on coffee.

Ambushing Satan with Song

And so it is at Bethlehem. This Choir is not here to turn worship into a nice aesthetic experience for the pleasure of unspiritual artsy types. Dean Palermo has not been called as a kind of musical artist in residence. He has been called as a company commander. The enemy is Satan and the warfare is song. And his business is to take charge of his company at the front ranks of the army and to lead us to God in worship, to each other in love, and into the world to plunder the death camps of Satan. Christ has given us a promise far greater than the promise of Jahaziel to Jehoshaphat: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me; go make disciples . . . I will be with you to the end of the age . . . I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die” (Matthew 28:18–20; John 11:25).

How I Learned to Forgive My Dad for Leaving

It’s easy in our anger to feel justified by withholding forgiveness from the parent that mistreated us. I certainly did. But this is where the truth of the gospel must infiltrate our hearts and our minds: being angry at the reality of divorce is one thing, withholding forgiveness from one of God’s children is a different thing altogether. For those that have been left by their parents, we desperately need Christ to stitch up every valve that leaks hatred or disgust into our minds, souls, and hearts. We must ask for a new set of spiritual eyes; eyes that look on our parents with the same affection and extravagant love that Christ does. We need a heart for our parents that resembles Christ’s heart for our parents.

How Christ Fulfilled and Ended the Old Testament Regime

The establishment of civil law on the basis of an ethnically rooted people, who are ruled directly by God, has ceased. The people of God are no longer a unified political body or an ethnic group or a nation-state, but are exiles and sojourners among all ethnic groups and all states. Therefore, God’s will for states is not taken directly from the Old Testament theocratic order, but should now be re-established from place to place and from time to time by means that correspond to God’s sovereign rule over all peoples, and that correspond to the fact that genuine obedience, rooted as it is in faith in Christ, cannot be coerced by law. The state is therefore grounded in God, but not expressive of God’s immediate rule.
