Training Day | RZIM Europe

‘Religion poisons everything’ (Christopher Hitchens) Religion appears to be the root cause of many of the problems we see in the world around us today. It not only seems to inspire normal people to do terrible things, like the terrorist attacks we see happening in Europe, but it has also been used to justify all kinds of abhorrent behaviour, from sexism and racism, to slavery and genocide. This intolerance is bad enough, but some would say that the worst thing about religion is that it encourages irrational thought, as well as an anti-scientific attitude. It is no wonder so many people appeal to the sentiments of John Lennon’s song, ‘Imagine’, which asks to us think of a better world that is free from religion.

What ‘Waiting’ Looks Like When You’ve Already Had Sex

I’ve been married to my husband, Jesse, for five years now. He and I fought really hard to remain pure until we were finally married. And it was so worth it. Some people mocked it, but I didn’t mind. I was secure in the belief that God created intimacy for my husband and him alone. I was content in waiting (even when it got really stinking hard).

Kindle Deals in Christian Apologetics: This Week's Top Ten Best Sellers!

To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide readers through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God. They move into an examination of the source of morality and the reliability of the New Testament accounts concerning Jesus. The final section of the book deals with a detailed investigation of the claims of Christ. This volume will be an interesting read for those skeptical about Christianity, as well as a helpful resource for Christians seeking to articulate a more sophisticated defense of their faith. Complaining Never Wins the Culture

Of course, there are some dangers of which we’re all very aware and conscious. In a pluralistic world, we know the pressure on Christians to abandon the truth that Jesus is the only way to God, so we proclaim loudly the exclusive salvation that we find in Christ. In the midst of a moral revolution, we see the temptation for Christians to deny or downplay the truth about sexuality and marriage, so we rightly seek to defend the Bible’s teaching on these issues.

Jesus Did Not Die for ‘Comfortable’

New page, same playbook. But Jesus did not give in to the lie of convenience. Instead, he clung to God’s promise to install a better kingdom. Jesus was there to do his Father’s will (Luke 4:4, 8, 12), not Satan’s (Luke 4:1–13), and not even his own (Matthew 26:36–46). He came “to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45), and nothing — not even the convenience of earthly provision, fame, or an undeniable, self-determined supernatural ministry — could keep the Son from his mission.

What is the Meaning of the Cross? | Cold Case Christianity

The Cross Reconciles (Pays) Our Debt The Bible acknowledges an important truth: all sin must be punished. God is just, and justice requires wrongs to be punished. We know this is true, even in our temporal experience as humans. When we break human laws, we expect to be punished in some way, and this punishment is proportionate to the authority we’ve offended. When we break our parent’s rules, we received one level of punishment; when we break the laws of the federal government, the punishment is appropriately harsher. God also has a set of Holy laws (called “Commandments”). When we violate these laws we offend the greatest of all authorities. Justice must be satisfied if God is to remain just, and the Bible reminds us of the gravity of our violation : our sin is punishable by death. The cross provides a solution, however, and demonstrates the mercy of God, even as it accomplishes His justice . The cross is the place where Jesus (God) paid the price for us, and in doing so, He offered us a way to be united to God, in spite of our moral imperfection:

The High Cost of Free Porn

The ultimate need of the Christian fighting pornography is not new or better tips, tricks, or tools — it is Christ. For the individual believer whose spiritual pulse has slowed to a crawl, Jesus is the answer; Jesus will rouse the sleeper and strengthen the weak. For the church whose vitality has dimmed, Jesus is the answer; a fresh understanding of the Son of God, obedient to the mission given him by the Father (John 6:38), will strengthen the hands of the elders and members of the congregation. For a movement lagging in missionary zeal, Jesus will restore hope and purpose.

6 Practical Tips to Free Yourself From Your Phone

An easily overlooked piece of gaining control over your phone is actually allowing yourself time to check it. When you budget your money, you don’t ban yourself from spending any money on coffee ever—you just don’t allow yourself to spend all of your money on coffee every day. You budget a certain amount of money for coffee, and you know that you can spend that money freely on coffee without feeling guilty. And this, in turn, eases the temptation to spend any of your other money on coffee.

3 Life Hacks Against Fear

I have some friends who are working through a big decision in their life, which may change the place where they do ministry. They’re struggling because they have a hunch that once they leave, others will speak badly about them, misrepresent their actions, and tarnish their legacy. My friends are also struggling to step out because they’re afraid of what will happen to the people they’ve loved and served once they’re gone. They feel responsible for those people, which is very normal.

Ambushing Satan with Song

And so it is at Bethlehem. This Choir is not here to turn worship into a nice aesthetic experience for the pleasure of unspiritual artsy types. Dean Palermo has not been called as a kind of musical artist in residence. He has been called as a company commander. The enemy is Satan and the warfare is song. And his business is to take charge of his company at the front ranks of the army and to lead us to God in worship, to each other in love, and into the world to plunder the death camps of Satan. Christ has given us a promise far greater than the promise of Jahaziel to Jehoshaphat: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me; go make disciples . . . I will be with you to the end of the age . . . I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die” (Matthew 28:18–20; John 11:25).

How I Learned to Forgive My Dad for Leaving

It’s easy in our anger to feel justified by withholding forgiveness from the parent that mistreated us. I certainly did. But this is where the truth of the gospel must infiltrate our hearts and our minds: being angry at the reality of divorce is one thing, withholding forgiveness from one of God’s children is a different thing altogether. For those that have been left by their parents, we desperately need Christ to stitch up every valve that leaks hatred or disgust into our minds, souls, and hearts. We must ask for a new set of spiritual eyes; eyes that look on our parents with the same affection and extravagant love that Christ does. We need a heart for our parents that resembles Christ’s heart for our parents.

Wearing a Cross Necklace Makes You Look More Trustworthy

Experimental studies have found, for example, that we see people as more trustworthy if they show signs of membership to a religious community (say, a necklace with a cross), or adhere to religious dietary requirements (say, eating halal). Only those who are truly committed to the religious group and its beliefs, we seem to reason, will be willing to make such investments. They must be trustworthy.

11 Contemporary Authors Every Christian Should Read

I never liked to read memoirs until I read one by Mary Karr. Now, I can’t get enough of them—especially hers. Karr writes with such meticulousness and detail, it feels like she started journaling her childhood as soon as she could hold a pencil. Even though her prose is excellent, I like her poetry even more. It bleeds and nourishes. She often writes about death, perseverance and family, and the way she talks about theology makes you rethink things you never knew you had to rethink. She is an honest writer, and we all need a little more honesty in our lives.

Lay Aside the Weight of Discouragement

A famous biblical example of discouragement is when the twelve spies returned after scoping out the Promised Land. They reported the land indeed “[flowed] with milk and honey,” but the inhabitants were “strong,” some were giants, and the cities “fortified and very large” (Numbers 13:27–28). Ten of the twelve spies said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are” (Numbers 13:31). This so discouraged the people that they refused to trust in God’s promises and power. As a result, they wandered in the wilderness forty more years. Only Joshua and Caleb, the two faithful spies, lived to see those fears defeated.

How Christ Fulfilled and Ended the Old Testament Regime

The establishment of civil law on the basis of an ethnically rooted people, who are ruled directly by God, has ceased. The people of God are no longer a unified political body or an ethnic group or a nation-state, but are exiles and sojourners among all ethnic groups and all states. Therefore, God’s will for states is not taken directly from the Old Testament theocratic order, but should now be re-established from place to place and from time to time by means that correspond to God’s sovereign rule over all peoples, and that correspond to the fact that genuine obedience, rooted as it is in faith in Christ, cannot be coerced by law. The state is therefore grounded in God, but not expressive of God’s immediate rule.

Gospel Depths: Why God Revealed the Depths of Salvation in Eternity Past

One week-night, when I was sitting in the house of God, I was not thinking much about the preacher’s sermon, for I did not believe it. The thought struck me, “How did you come to be a Christian?” I sought the Lord. “But how did you come to seek the Lord?” The truth flashed across my mind in a moment — I should not have sought Him unless there had been some previous influence in my mind to make me seek Him. I prayed, thought I, but then I asked myself, How came I to pray? I was induced to pray by reading the Scriptures. How came I to read the Scriptures? I did read them, but what led me to do so? Then, in a moment, I saw that God was at the bottom of it all, and that He was the Author of my faith, and so the whole doctrine of grace opened up to me, and from that doctrine I have not departed to this day, and I desire to make this my constant confession, “I ascribe my change wholly to God.” ( Autobiography , 164–165)

Cold-Case Christianity for Kids: Investigate Jesus with a Real Detective - Kindle edition by J. Warner Wallace, Susie Wallace. Children Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

My family first learned of J. Warner Wallace when watching a series of lectures from Summit Ministries. My adult son and I really liked what we saw, and he acquired Cold-Case Christianity. After he read it, I borrowed it from him. And then with us talking about it (and seeing Wallace in God's Not Dead 2), everyone else (my husband and the other two teens) were interested too. So I bought the Kindle and Audible versions. And then... I learned about Cold-Case Christianity for Kids. The best thing about this book might be that it goes along with the adult book so well. I have my teens reading the adult book, and we are working through the "for Kids" book as a group. The Adult Leader Guide helps me to know exactly what meshes between the two books and gives me help in making this work for all of us. And that might be the best thing about this book -- the website. There is so much more than just a book. Each chapter consists of a few different parts. We are using all of them. *There is the chapter itself, which includes plenty of visual appeal. *A notebook sheet (the red link above) that you can use for taking notes on the chapter.

Don’t Miss Steven Curtis Chapman’s Point

But Jesus tells us, “In this world you will have trouble.” But then he says, “But take heart. I have overcome the world.” He’s saying there’s another story being told, and if I didn’t believe that I would be an extremely bitter and angry man. Maria’s death underlined and solidified what I knew and believed, and made it more real. When there was nothing else to hold on to, I heard myself say, “God, I’m going to trust you and worship you, and that’s not because there’s an audience watching. I’m going to bless your name whether you give or take away.”

So many journalism questions remain, about current status of evangelism and missions in India

Ah, but that leads to yet another question: Maybe evangelism is illegal when done by foreigners, using foreign funds? But Compassion works with local churches and ministries. Thus, one needs to ask if evangelism is now illegal in India even when the work is done by local Christians (a faith that has been in India for many centuries, even to the time of the early apostles ). Native Christians can do safe, inside-the-sanctuary church things but they cannot do evangelism that leads to conversions?
