The Skills Every Twentysomething Needs to Learn

But things are different now. You have a few hard-won young adult years behind you're chock-full of practical knowledge and lessons learned the hard way. Still, you are young, and in five to 10 years, your thirtysomething self will be passing judgment on the current you. How they think of you is up to ... well, you. But here to help are some skills you can develop right now that can set the years to come off on the right track—and that might even make your pre-middle aged, minivan-driving, slightly more wrinkled, wizened self thankful for their twenties.

God’s Good News in Bad News

I’m concerned that so many Christians, when we get news — say of an earthquake or of a tsunami, and 100,000 people are wiped away, not to mention our own personal news — almost instinctively today, it seems that Christians are prone to say we shouldn’t ask why. God doesn’t have purposes in this. That’s blasphemous to even think of the hand of God involved in this in any kind of designed or purposeful way.

Ted Cruz for President

We supported Cruz’s campaign in 2012 because we saw in him what conservatives nationwide have come to see as well. Cruz is a brilliant and articulate exponent of our views on the full spectrum of issues. Other Republicans say we should protect the Constitution. Cruz has actually done it; indeed, it has been the animating passion of his career. He is a strong believer in the liberating power of free markets, including free trade (notwithstanding the usual rhetorical hedges). His skepticism about “comprehensive immigration reform” is leading him to a realism about the impact of immigration that has been missing from our policymaking and debate. He favors a foreign policy based on a hard-headed assessment of American interests, one that seeks to strengthen our power but is mindful of its limits. He forthrightly defends religious liberty, the right to life of unborn children, and the role of marriage in connecting children to their parents — causes that reduce too many other Republicans to mumbling.

An Open Letter to John Kerry: Genocide Against Assyrian and Other Iraqi and Syrian Christians in ISIS-Controlled Territory - Philos Project

Interested Organizations submit this letter in support of the Department of State’s current investigation. We commend the State Department for undertaking this grave and important review. As many governments, legislative bodies, non-governmental organizations, and world leaders have already concluded, the available evidence demonstrates that ISIS’s actions rise to the level of genocide. Furthermore, we understand that recent information received from on-the-ground interviews in the region and other sources establishes without question that ISIS is committing genocide and makes clear that claims that it is offering jizya or dhimmi status are a publicity stunt or extortion payments that pervert these classical terms. Nothing akin to the classic jizya discussed herein is being offered to the Assyrian and other Iraqi and Syrian Christians. This newly gathered information will be presented shortly in a letter to be filed by In Defense of Christians and the Knights of Columbus. While the lack of jizya or dhimmi leaves ISIS’s actions without any excuse, this letter focuses on the equally important legal and factual reality, detailed herein, that any so-called dhimmi contract and jizya tax ISIS purportedly offers Christians cannot preclude a finding of genocide.

3 Ways the Gospel Changes Marriage

Every single sin flows from the reservoir of self. We displace God and others in favor of ourselves. It is disastrous and painful. Nowhere is this inversion more glaring and hurtful than in marriage. But when the gospel comes home there are pronounced changes on this front. The irritable wife becomes patient and kind with her husband because Jesus was patient and kind with her. The self-absorbed husband finds more joy in learning about his wife’s interests than the side-story of his favorite athletes. This is because he realizes that she was made by God and for God as well as the truth that the Spirit continues to powerfully work more of Christ into her life. This is attractive and compelling in a way that home-runs and touchdowns can’t ever be. The gospel comes home and turns our hearts away from ourselves (selfishness) and towards our spouse (service).

5 Metaphors for Your Church Membership

At first blush, “membership” may sound unattractive to us because it sounds commercial. In reality, however, membership is thoroughly biblical. Born again, we become members of Christ’s royal family, members of his body, living stones in his temple, even spiritually one with him in marriage. From these metaphors we get an entirely new picture of membership—one that isn’t foreign to the church. Rather, the church is its membership.

Should Christians Mix Faith and Politics?

Such a coincidence! Just this morning I read what Dietrich Bonhoeffer had to say about this very thing! I read In Yancey’s book about how when Jesus was here, he was not all that concerned with the current government or the Roman occupation, hence we as Christians are to be concerned with the heavenly kingdom, not with the government and current politics into which we happened to be born. And I often look to the Amish for examples on how to live Biblically since I have so few other true Christian examples to follow – and they too mostly stay away from politics. I had begun to think that maybe this is exactly what we were supposed to do – not get involved, to be in the world but not of it. I would always vote but beyond that…. not my responsibility? BUT. Then I read what Bonhoeffer had to say and what you had to say and see that although each person needs to follow what God is telling them to do personally, that we do indeed have a responsibility. You answered a question for me and I appreciate it. “The man who felt all the force of the pacifist position and weighed the cost of discipleship concluded in the depths of his soul that to withdraw from those who were participating in the political and military resistance would be irresponsible cowardice and flight from reality.

Your Spiritual Crisis Has 214 Likes

Along with the usual concerns all young people share—finding stability, a meaningful job, a relationship that makes the heart sing—for those who profess Christian faith there is a far greater one: working out your own salvation with fear and trembling. Matters of the soul, your place in the church, questions about the goodness of God or even his existence, questions of death, eternity, sin, the problem of evil—matters that have been of concern to young people all along—are now all being worked out in public, in real time. This process used to be a sometimes-agonizing, always-private rite of passage. Not any longer.

Jesus’s Authority Upholds Missions

“Truth is the bedrock of mission,” Shaw observes at the outset (3). And not just any truth, but the certainty of Jesus’s all-encompassing authority. Mission fundamentally begins and ends with a clear vision of Jesus as Lord and—contrary to some missionary manuals—not necessarily with personal calling or passion for the lost. What we know and believe about Jesus shapes what we do for Jesus (5).

Study: the early Earth’s atmosphere contained oxygen

[…]Their findings not only showed that oxygen was present in the early Earth atmosphere, something that has been shown in other studies, but that oxygen was present as early as 4.4 billion years ago. This takes the window of time available for life to have begun, by an origin-of-life scenario like the RNA-first world, and reduces it to an incredibly short amount of time. Several factors need to coincide in order for nucleotides or amino acids to form from purely naturalistic circumstances (chance and chemistry). The specific conditions required already made purely naturalist origin-of-life scenarios highly unlikely. Drastically reducing the amount of time available, adding that to the other conditions needing to be fulfilled, makes the RNA world hypothesis or a Miller-Urey-like synthesis of amino acids simply impossible.

While Wyoming Republicans held their primary, Trump hosted a rally in Kansas City, Mo., his first big event since canceling a rally in Chicago last night over security concerns. New Resource!! Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side by Natasha Crain

The question I receive most often from my seminar attendees is: What books would you recommend for parents and for elementary-age children? Typically, I point parents to introductory-level apologetics texts that will provide a foundation upon which they can gradually build. For preteen children, the pickings are rather slim, which was one of the main motivations behind my Young Defenders apologetics storybook series. Beyond this, however, there were no resources (that I know of) specifically designed for the training and encouragement of parents in the area of actually teaching apologetics and worldview to their children in an interesting and effective manner.

Downton Abbey: The Final Season Episodes 8 and 9 – a Christian Perspective

Loyalty is something that often grows with us, and Barrow’s loyalty to Downton at last comes to the forefront in this final episode. His own bitterness and cruelty got him to a point in which he felt no return, but ultimately the kindness of some saved his life. It is a wonderful story of redemption to see Barrow taking on the duties of Butler to close out the series. There were times in the series I felt nothing good could come of Barrow, but that is just what we are as sinners: grace is something that breaks through and without deserving it, God lifts us from our sin. Barrow’s story of redemption is a powerful reminder of the concept of grace.

30 Why the New Definition of Tolerance Is Dangerous - Stand to Reason Blog

Notice also that his reasoning doesn’t work the other way around—i.e., Greg wouldn’t be allowed to say to him , “‘Tolerance’ means that if you think I’m wrong, then I have a right to shut you up,” because baked into this new definition is a preference for a particular set of political positions (i.e., anything his side deems essential for the “well-being of others”). If you agree with those positions, you’re declared “tolerant.” If you disagree, you’re intolerant.

http://killingjesuschrist.blogspot.com/2016/02/risen-great-sign-of-resurrection-of.html

Don’t feel sorry for Christ, who, it should be said, wouldn’t feel the least bit sorry for anyone who rejects the truth. Jesus said He would get all who are His, not one would perish. Jesus was history’s most compassionate man—it was part of what makes Him great, His willingness to reach out and love and heal every hurting person, sometimes even among His enemies. His most telling parable was that of the Good Samaritan. An enemy of the Jewish people was made the hero in Christ’s compelling tale about extending mercy to those who do not deserve it. By the end of the story, we will all have deep inspiration to reach out to all men with compassion, friends or enemies.

Repentance vs. Defensiveness

Our default mode—in and out of the church—seems to be defensiveness. I know mine is. Nothing is more natural when we feel threatened by a criticism than to divert, distract, and downplay. It’s as instinctive as flinching when a punch is coming.

37 Love No Matter What - Biola University

Jesus challenges his followers to do something that is never easy and always countercultural: love your enemies (Matt. 5:44). Lind spells out the bad news about what this means for families: “Of the top 10 jobs of the next decade, only registered nurses and general and operations managers require education beyond high school and limited training. And with the exception of registered nurses, with a median annual wage of $66,640, and general and operations managers, with a median annual wage in 2014 of $97,270, the other occupations with the most job openings pay between $18,410 a year (combined food preparation and serving workers) and $31,200 a year (customer service representatives).”

The Whole Bible in One Meal

This redemption is the whole meaning of the Bible. Whatever the preacher preaches on, if he’s preaching rightly, he’s preaching Christ (Luke 24:27). If he preaches God’s moral law, he’s preaching how the fall has injured us, why we need to turn to Christ in faith, and how the Lord wants his redeemed people to live. If the preacher speaks about Israel’s history, he’s telling us how God prepared the earth for the coming of Jesus and for his sacrifice for sin. When he preaches from the book of Acts, he is telling us how God made his word to grow throughout the world, as believers set out to proclaim the Lord’s death “until he comes.”

41
Defending Your Faith

This is an excellent book, but as a physicist I note a significant error. The concept of the Big Bang is wrong. This error though is common even among physicists. The Big Bang is about SPACE expanding. It is not about matter in space exploding from a point in space. It is an expansion of space from all points of space. The preeminant Copernican Principle assumption of the Big Bang Cosmologists does not permit a special point in space. In their assumption the cosmos is UNBOUNDED and matter uniformely fills all of space at all times. There are no edges/boundaries to the matter in space. A clarifying analogy that is often used is this: think of a balloon. Space is like the rubber surface of this balloon dust particles attached to this surface and uniformely distributed upon it are like the matter in space. as the balloon expands from a very small size, note that all points of space expand; particles separate from each other identically because space is expanding, however particles are not moving wrspt space. The rate of particle separation is proportional to particle distances from each other.

42 Renewing Your Mind | John the Beloved | March 11, 2016

Why did God give us the book of Revelation? If you had asked me this question when I was a young Christian, I might have said, “To help us discover when Jesus will return to earth,” “To help us make sense of events in the Middle East,” “To give us nightmares about the tribulation so that we don’t get lax and miss the rapture,” “To give Christians something to argue about,” or, simply, “To confuse us.” My answer today is different: God gave the Apocalypse shown to John in order to bless us — to do us good, to convey His grace, to fortify our hearts. In Revelation, God promises His blessing seven times (a symbolically significant number): to those who hear and hold Revelation’s message (Rev. 1:3; 22:7), who die “in the Lord” (14:13), who stay awake and alert (16:15), who attend the Lamb’s marriage supper (19:9), who share the first resurrection (20:6), and who wash their robes in the blood of the Lamb (22:14; see 7:15).

43
John the Baptist: The True Meaning of Greatness

In Matthew 11:11, after noting the unique greatness of John the Baptist, Jesus went on to make a vivid spiritual point. The Lord explained that “the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than [John].” In saying that, Jesus was not diminishing John’s stature; rather, He was emphasizing the spiritual privilege that all New Testament believers enjoy. John was greater than the Old Testament prophets because he personally participated in the fulfillment of what they had merely anticipated from a distance (cf. 1 Peter 1:10–11). But all believers after the cross and resurrection enjoy even greater privilege still because we participate in the full understanding and experience of something John only anticipated—the actual atoning work of Christ.

44
Georgia Governor Invokes the Bible Against Christian Conscience

The claim that we must violate our conscience because Jesus would not want us to “discriminate against anybody” is incoherent and unbiblical. But it’s Gov. Deal’s direct threat to the religious liberty of Christians that is most offensive.  If this poor exegesis was made by an ordinary Christian layman it would be an excusable offense. Low levels of Biblical literacy combined with a desire to fit in with the secular culture have led many Christians to draw similar conclusions. Most ordinary Christians, however,  do not have the power to compel Christians to violate their conscience or face the wrath of the state in the way that Gov. Deal does. And he is implying that he’s willing to use government force to compel anyone who thinks differently about the issue than he does. Unfortunately, this problem isn’t limited to the state of Georgia. When it comes religious liberty, this type of Scripture-twisting is likely to become a common tactic used by Christian politicians. Just as many liberal politicians have found a way to reconcile their faith with support for abortion, many conservative politicians are now finding ways to justify abandoning religious liberty — all in the name of Jesus.

Book Review: Answering Jihad by Nabeel Qureshi

Answering Jihad is an important, timely book and no matter who you are, it will challenge you. If you are a Muslim, you are encouraged to examine the life of Muhammed and what the Quran really teaches about violence. If you are a Christian, Nabeel reminds you of Jesus’ command to love your enemies, which “might perhaps be the most powerful answer to jihad at our disposal today”, even at the risk of our own lives (20). And everyone is challenged to befriend those who are different than us instead of fearing them. Nabeel concludes that the only way forward is through truth and love.

There Are Monsters Everywhere In '10 Cloverfield Lane'

Other characters get added, played by John Goodman (who, if you ask me, should be in all movies) and John Gallagher, Jr., and their little society is like a microcosm of the typical post-apocalypse tale, with some weird twists thrown in. In this version of humanity after the apocalypse (if there even was one), you might play Taboo and eat spaghetti, but monsters lurk everywhere. The trick is to identify them correctly, and to avoid becoming one.
