Watch the Powerful Story of Two Refugees Separated By 80 Years

UNICEF—the United Nations Children's Fund that’s dedicated to “[fighting] for the rights of every child, every day, across the globe—has released a powerful new video that tells the story of two refugees. Their stories are strikingly similar, even though one is nearly 80 years older than the other. The WWII child refugee and the Syrian child refugee both survived war, refugee camps and unimaginable hardships. But, there are many more children who are currently living the same story. Here are some organizations currently helping victims of the Syrian civil war.

The Pope Had the Best Super Bowl Commercial

Pope Francis didn’t need big special effects or slapstick humor to create the Super Bowl’s best—and most important—commercial. The YouTube video features the Pope giving a brief but powerful message about humanity: Great sporting events like today's Super Bowl are highly symbolic, showing that it is possible to build a culture of encounter and a world of peace. By participating in sport, we are able to go beyond our own self interest—and in a healthy way—we learn to sacrifice, to grow in fidelity and respect the rules. May this year’s Super Bowl be a sign of peace, friendship and solidarity to the world.

A Simple Way to Pray Every Day

Luther exhorts us to let each petition guide our prayer. So, after praying, “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,” we may continue to pray, “Yes, Father, it is our great desire that your name would be feared and revered for who you are: our God, our Creator, the Holy One who, in unthinkable mercy, gave your only begotten Son to save us from your wrath upon our sin.”

Under DeVos, the Real School Choice Christians Face

A new administration’s nominee for Secretary of Education doesn’t usually steal the show. Betsy DeVos made headlines during her prolonged and contentious nomination process which ended in approval today. While some evangelical supporters of homeschooling, private school, and charter school options are celebrating a school choice advocate’s appointment to this all-important role (and a graduate of the evangelical liberal arts school, Calvin College, at that), other conservative Christian public school parents and advocates are disheartened by DeVos’s limited personal history with our nation’s public schools (she has mentored in public schools but not attended, taught, or sent children to public schools).

Is Love of Money Really the Root of All Evils?

Paul is tracing the cause of these “many desires” back to the love of money as the root of “all evils.” Why does the desire to be rich not just result in one desire for money but “many desires”? Because the love of money is the root of vastly more than we usually think it is. It is the root of all evils that men do. Paul is tracing the multiplicity of desires that flow from the desire to be rich down deep to a root that accounts for “many” because it accounts for “all.”

The Most Persuasive Scientific Reason to Believe?

The Most Persuasive Scientific Reason to Believe? By Dr. Jeff Zweerink What scientific argument for the truth of Christianity do you find the most persuasive? (I would love to hear your answer on either Facebook or Twitter .) As I contemplated this question, my answer was big bang cosmology. Here’s why. All big bang models include three essential features: (1) constant laws of physics throughout the universe; (2) a dynamic universe, one either expanding or contracting; and (3) a beginning to the universe. Remarkably, the biblical description matches these essential features. Constant Laws of Physics The scientific enterprise depends on a universe governed by constant laws of physics. If measurements today have no bearing on what happened yesterday or will happen tomorrow, no scientific progress can happen. Similarly, if measurements here on Earth are unrelated to what happens in a different galaxy, scientists cannot determine anything about how the universe behaves. The main philosophical motivation for Einstein developing the theory of general relativity was that the laws of physics ought to appear the same everywhere in the universe at all times.

'The Best Side of Slavery I Can Conceive Of'

The first man offered on the block was an old gray-headed slave by the name of Richard. When they had bid him up to 70 or 80 dollars, one of the bidders asked Mr. Young what he could do, as he looked very old and infirm? Mr. Young replied by saying, "He is not able to accomplish much manual labor, from his extreme age and hard labor in early life. Yet I would rather have him than many of those who are young and vigorous; who are able to perform twice as much labor because I know him to be faithful and trustworthy, a Christian in good standing in my church. I can trust him anywhere with confidence."

A Personal God is the Best Explanation for the Beginning of the Universe | Cold Case Christianity

If the cause of the universe is an impersonal force, its effect (the appearance of everything from nothing) would be realized the instant the force was present. If that were the case, the first cause of the universe could be no older than the universe itself. The appearance of the cause (the impersonal force) and its effect (the creation of space, time and matter) would be simultaneous events; one would be no older than the other. But if that’s the case, we would once again find ourselves looking for what  caused the first cause to appear in the first place! See the problem? The first cause of the universe must itself be uncaused and eternal in order for us to avoid the illogical and endless pursuit of a prior cause. Unless we are willing to accept the irrational premise that the cause of the universe is itself only as old as the universe itself, we are going to have to admit that this cause cannot be an impersonal force. The cause of the universe had the ability to decide to bring the universe into existence, and the ability to decide is an attribute of personhood.

9 Signs It's Time to Quit Your Job

The management at your job may not be the worst but because you hate work, you don’t care for them. This can be dangerous when it leads to what Ephesians 4:29 calls “corrupting talk.” This is something Paul warns us against using. This happens especially when you've been with a company that doesn't value you or your opinion. If you work for a place where the management has no interest in helping you get promoted or develop yourself, it's time to get out. Good management and leadership is evident when there is a true desire by those in charge to see those under them grow, develop, excel and move up.

You Can Forgive Your Parents

Perhaps a brother or sister (or father or mother) could do worse to you, but most of our family members are not capable of horrors like these. They plotted to murder him, then left him in a hole to die, then pulled him out of the pit, opting instead to make a little money by selling him into some unknown, lifelong slavery. They had no idea where they were sending their brother. They simply rejoiced that they were finally rid of him, despite how devastating the news would be to their father.

Interesting Hits and Major Misses in the Jesus of Islam - Christian Research Institute

When you look at the Bible, there are a variety of uses for the phrase “son of God.” It can mean that you sort of reflect God’s will. When it says blessed are the peacemakers they shall be sons of God (Matt. 5:9). God is not producing an offspring, it is where sort of we have a kind of family resemblance if we are doing God’s will. Israel is called God’s son because God plays a direct role in starting Israel and so on (Exod. 4:22-23). Jesus is the Son of God in a unique sense in terms of His relationship with the Father and because He is the Messiah (John 3:16; 20:30-31; Luke 22:66-71). What is interesting of all the different uses of “son of God,” angels are called sons of God in certain contexts and so on (Job 1:6; 2:1), but of all the different uses of “son of God” none of them have anything to do with God actually physically producing an offspring. Yet, according to the Qur’an that is the only thing Christians can mean.

Kill Sin or Sin Will Kill You

I can kill her over and over again; and over and over again she’ll revive. I won’t be free of her menacing prowl until my Victor comes and stares into my eyes. His gaze is a silver-bullet head-shot. Then, finally then, Pride will die for good, never to be raised again. Then death itself will die, swallowed with my sin in final victory (1 Corinthians 15:54). Jesus Christ our Victor is Lord over all (Philippians 2:11). He’s the spotless, innocent Lamb that holds the keys to Death and Hades (1 Peter 1:19; Revelation 1:18). Sin’s time here on earth is running short.

Motherhood Is a Marathon

The trouble is it doesn’t always feel holy, and it certainly doesn’t look holy. It looks crude and unrefined and messy. But we are those who walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). Motherhood is a marathon and not a sprint. The finish line is far off, and the fruits of our labor are long in coming. Before us, we find little ones who are so helpless, so needy, so self-focused, that it can be hard to imagine them as anything else. But if we can picture the godly men and women they might one day be by God’s grace — the kind of men and women this world so desperately needs — if we can hold firmly, desperately to that vision, we will remember the great purpose behind our everyday sacrificies.

Reasons To Believe : Cosmic Creation Battle May Be Over

The ΛCDM cosmic creation model, however, is not without competition. In 1983, astronomers developed a countermodel known as MOND (modified Newtonian dynamics). In MOND, Newton’s laws of motion are modified from a pervasive inverse square law where the force of gravity between two massive bodies, regardless of the separation distance, weakens with the square of the distance separating the two bodies. In MOND, the inverse square law applies where the distance separating the two bodies is less than about ten thousand light-years, but a different law applies for much greater separation distances. Where the distance between two bodies is more than several tens of thousands of light-years, the force of gravity between two massive bodies weakens with the distance separating the bodies. Exactly at what separation distance the inverse square law transitions to just an inverse law is still an active subject of inquiry.

Can Creationists Be “Real” Scientists?

Clearly, creationists can indeed be real scientists. And this shouldn’t be surprising since the very basis for scientific research is biblical creation. This is not to say that noncreationists cannot be scientists. But, in a way, an evolutionist is being inconsistent when he or she does science. The big-bang supporter claims the universe is a random chance event, and yet he or she studies it as if it were logical and orderly. The evolutionist is thus forced to borrow certain creationist principles in order to do science. The universe is logical and orderly because its Creator is logical and has imposed order on the universe. God created our minds and gave us the ability and curiosity to study the universe. Furthermore, we can trust that the universe will obey the same physics tomorrow as it does today because God is consistent. This is why science is possible. On the other hand, if the universe is just an accidental product of a big bang, why should it be orderly? Why should there be laws of nature if there is no lawgiver? If our brains are the by-products of random chance, why should we trust that their conclusions are accurate? But if our minds have been designed, and if the universe has been constructed by God, as the Bible teaches, then of course we should be able to study nature.

The Briefing 02-07-17 - AlbertMohler.com

But of course, it’s a great deal more than that because we’re looking here at a basic constitutional issue. Now let’s just remind ourselves, the framers of the U.S. Constitution identified religious liberty not merely as one liberty, but as America’s first liberty. That is to say that every other liberty that is enumerated in the U.S. Constitution is understood to flow from and to be dependent upon the prior question, which is religious liberty. The second thing we need to keep always in mind is this: the framers of the U.S. Constitution and the text of the Constitution itself, they did not intend to create rights. They didn’t believe that they had the power or the authority to create rights. They believed that these rights are granted even as the text says, by the Creator, and they believed that it was the responsibility of the government and the specific design of the U.S. Constitution to recognize those rights, recognizing rights that God the Creator himself had given, rights that every government must also respect and no government must deny.

It's Time for the Church to Face Its Racial History

First, the Church needs to be acquainted with its actual history. Not a selected history, but the real story of how Christians were key facilitators of American slavery, how Puritans were chaplains on slave ships, how those who believed in the inspiration and inerrancy of the Bible used the Bible as a way to justify the slavery of African-Americans. They used the Bible to justify Jim Crow. They misused the Bible itself to do all sorts of heinous things, but that history isn’t told. The history is not told of how churches actually kept African-Americans from worshipping within the context of the congregation. The story is not told about why it was that plantation churches were set up in the first because white Christians did not want to worship with enslaved people.
