An Apologetic Tour-de-Force

Peter Williams is a genius. If you don't know him, he's the Warden of Tyndale House, Cambridge, an immensely intelligent guy, a super communicator, and an expert in biblical languages. (There's an amusing moment in the Q&A at the end of this video when someone asks, "How many languages have you read parts of the Bible in?", and he rather self-deprecatingly answers, "Twelve." That gives you an idea.) Here he is with an extremely good lecture on slavery - and I say that as one who has spoken and written on this subject a number of times, and thought he knew it pretty well - which makes some intriguing points about translation, legal codes, the Exodus story and the New Testament. If you can find an hour to watch it, it is well worth your time.

7 Things Christians Need to Remember About Politics

The country is not going to be destroyed if your candidate loses. As 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Stand up and demonstrate what God has given you. America has functioned—albeit, at varying levels of success—for years under the direction of alternating Democrat and Republican control, and at every flip, the other side thought it was the end of the world. It’s not. And if we’re a Church that believes God is in control, we have to believe that He is the one in control of the end times—not whoever's in office now, and not whoever succeeds them.

Wheaton College, Larycia Hawkins to ‘Part Ways’

In a February 2 letter, Stan Jones told faculty, “I communicated to Dr. Hawkins that I recognize her as a sister in Christ, and that it was never my intent to call the sincerity of her faith into question. I asked Dr. Hawkins for her forgiveness for the ways I contributed to the fracture of our relationship, and to the fracture of Dr. Hawkins’ relationship with the College. While I acted to exercise my position of oversight of the faculty within the bounds of Wheaton College employment policies and procedures, I apologized for my lack of wisdom and collegiality as I initially approached Dr. Hawkins, and for imposing an administrative leave more precipitously than was necessary.”

The Proverbs 31 Man

The mega-grace we enjoy in the gospel gives us the power, the vision, and the heart to build one other up (Eph. 4:29). Brothers, it’s no longer us who live, but Christ who lives in us (Gal. 2:20). The ultimate Proverbs 31 man is alive and well in the heavenly places, leading us, guiding, us, empowering us, and conforming us into his image. The Proverbs 31 man is more than a neat way to go about husbanding—it’s the way of Christ. He rejoices over his bride. He encourages us, walks with us, and fills us with his Spirit. Jesus Christ is the Proverbs 31 man in the flesh. Let’s draw near to him and he will draw near to us—and then we, and the homes we lead, will never be the same.

Lean in on Sunday Morning

Leaning in on Sunday morning has less to do with the posture of your body, and more to do with the stance of your soul — whether your heart is constricted and closed in corporate worship, or swelling in hope and expanding with expectation. Whether you have an attitude of anticipation, or whether society’s increasing cynicism about everything under the sun has come home to roost in your own chest. Whether you’re ready to give the benefit of the doubt to miscues up front and distractions around you in the pews, or are waiting for another excuse to disengage.

Three Sightings of the Glory of Jesus

The most ultimate prayer that Jesus prayed for Char — and that could be prayed for Char — was that she would see the glory of the risen Christ and love him with an all-satisfying love the way his Father does. There isn’t anything greater than to see the Son of God in all his divine beauty and radiance and greatness, and be supremely and increasingly happy in him forever. There isn’t anything greater or more profoundly satisfying than this. And this is what Jesus prayed for Char.

How to Survive Superbowl Sunday if You Couldn't Care Less About Sports

Here’s the trick: Find a comfy spot and pretend to fall asleep. With some luck, your friend will feel bad for you and leave early. This won’t be effective unless your friend can see you, so choose your position carefully. If you’re really fed-up, do the whole nodding off while sitting up move. It’s slightly less believable but it will get the point across a little more boldly. And, if your former friend still doesn’t get the hint, at least you can nap through the rest of it.

“It is no exaggeration to insist that the issue dealt with in this book is more important than any other that one might suggest. For, as Ferguson makes all too clear, the issue is the very definition of the gospel itself. The errors of antinomianism and legalism lie ready to allure unwary hucksters content with mere slogans and rhetoric. I can think of no one I trust more to explore and examine this vital subject than Sinclair Ferguson. For my part, this is one of the most important and definitive books I have read in over four decades.” Derek Thomas , Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina; Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

How pro-life apologetics helps strengthen your evangelism

Beyond the obvious obligation we have as thinking human beings to clarify the status, and defend the value, of innocent, unborn human life, engaging in the pro-life project is also a way to make the case for the truth of Christianity in general. It stands to reason that if the scientific, philosophical, and moral arguments we offer in defense of the humanity of the unborn also happen to align exactly with the biblical notion of what it means to be a human being made “in the image of God,” then the Bible might also have something to say about other things of importance.

Six New Atheist Myths about Jesus and the Gospels | Saints and Sceptics

In the second part of his response to the New Atheism at Fitzroy Presbyterian Church in Belfast, David Glass comments briefly on six of their claims about Jesus and the Gospels. It might be tempting to think that Christians and atheists will just have different views on these subjects and that there is no way to resolve these differences, but on these six claims of the New Atheists David argues that any rational person should reject them. Despite their popularity as objections to Christianity, there are no good reasons to accept them and very good reasons to reject them. These New Atheist myths are:

7 New Theology Books You Should Read This Year

My book is derived from a set of lectures I gave at Princeton University in 2008. I wanted to show the class the native simplicity of theology—a discipline foreign to most of the students—while at times noting some of the disagreements that have arisen in its history and some of the fascinating paths for speculation that have opened. To do this, one will inevitably, and rightly, sketch some specific theology. And so the book indeed presents an outline of theology, one I avow. It turns on the death and resurrection of Jesus as the Lord’s own answer to the question he posed to Ezekiel in the valley of bones: “Can these bones live” (Ezek. 37:3). Since the dry bones are the whole of the people chosen to be God’s instrument in history, the question amounts to “Does death win?” Many suppose that theology itself is a heap of dead bones, and some attention is given to this possibility. ~ Robert Jenson, emeritus senior scholar for Research at the Center for Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey

Donald Trump promises gay publication "forward motion" on gay rights issues

“I know it’s been a long time since we’ve seen it, but this is what it means to truly be a ‘big tent Republican’ instead of a panderer. I’m happy to go anywhere to anyone to champion conservative values. We’re not always going to agree on everything, and I’m not going to change my fundamental values. But at the same time, I’m hoping to offer enough bold leadership on a broad slate of issues that many voters will decide we agree on far more than we disagree.”

Finding Truth: 5 Principles for Unmasking Atheism, Secularism, and Other God Substitutes - Kindle edition by Nancy Pearcey. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Nancy Pearcey’s bestselling and award-winning book "Total Truth" made quite a mark on my life. It was, to my memory, the first book I had ever read on worldview, and its explanation of the way our world divides the sacred and the secular has not only stuck with me, but has helped me better understand and explain the culture around me. Though Pearcey has written another book between then and now, I consider her new work, "Finding Truth," the true sequel to "Total Truth." In "Finding Truth," Pearcey offers 5 principles meant to unmask our culture’s endless worldview alternatives to Christianity—secularism, atheism, and the like. There are all kinds of books that make a similar promise, but this one has a noteworthy difference: Pearcey looks to Romans 1 to find a kind of apologetics training manual for identifying and challenging any other worldview. At the start of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he claims that all humanity has access to evidence for God’s existence, and then describes what happens when people refuse to acknowledge him.

Apologetics Training is No Longer an Option: 12 Quotes

We need to help people be aware of the important issues with which they will need to contend. In the area of apologetics, we must give reasons for why we believe. We see so many believers who have only a superficial understanding of Scripture and have no basis for saying why the Christian faith is true and or why he is not a Hindu or a Muslim. Without that awareness of an objective foundation for belief, they will buy into books like the Da Vinci Code and will be much more vulnerable to the tactics of new religious movements like Mormonism or Jehovah Witnesses. Because they are not biblically or theologically founded they can become more easily confused and rattled when they read a book like Richard Dawkins’s The God Delusion. They just have not thought deeply about their own faith; so they become swayed by anti or non-Christian perspectives.

A Plea to the Mission Minded

Behold suburbia, the mission field for whom our hearts do not break. We hold them in contempt as those who have heard and spurned the gospel. Their failing marriages, rebellious children, and quiet addictions stir in us weariness and wariness: This is their own doing. This is the fruit of their commonplace lives of capitulation and mediocrity. Suffering and loss may visit them, but they still drive to hospitals and gravesites in late-model SUVs. Why should we pour out our lives on the rocky soil of suburban America when, for the price of a plane ticket, we can till the fertile fields of Africa, Asia, South America?

Against Our Own Sin by Steven Lawson | February 6, 2016

The Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn once wrote: “The line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” As Christians, it is very easy to fall into the trap of seeing the enemy as “over there.” If we draw the lines clearly enough and build the walls high enough, we will be safe. Or so we think. We very easily forget that we war not only against the world and the devil, but also against our own sinful flesh.

The Law Always Condemns, The Gospel Always Saves. Or, why I'm a Lutheran.

As a Jew who is a Christian, I had to resolve this for myself. The understanding I came to is that no single Law can be followed totally and for all time. However, the Law in its totality can be fulfilled. The Jewish Law in particular is fulfilled when you give a sacrifice for your sins, when you atone. The Israelites, later Jews, did this for millenia, until the 2nd temple was destroyed. However, Christ wanted us to be have the Law continue being fulfilled in our lives, and so He gave Himself as the perfect sacrifice, the perfect fulfillment of the Law. So, I was given the Law of Moses, and a sacrifice fulfills it, as it always has. Jesus did not change that. But instead of covering my sin, as the sacrifices given before could only do, Jesus wipes it away completely. And so the Law is fulfilled in my life. Therefore Jesus is not contra-law for me, but right within it, because the Laws purpose was never to condemn, but to save me. However, it can only save me by pointing out my failures, and then giving me a way to be redeemed for those failures… which it does, and Jesus fulfills that.

Book Review: Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side

“Many well-intentioned, godly parents unknowingly send their children out into the world malnourished by an insufficient diet of evidence for their faith…We know. Ratio Christi sees it every day in our chapters on high school and college campuses. Students come to us starving for ways to defend their faith from intellectual assault. As the director of parent outreach at Ratio Christi, I’ve been looking for a tool to recommend to parents so they can start this training early at home. This is it. Start feeding your family a steady diet of Keeping Your Kids on God’s Side to strengthen their hearts and minds for the battles against the secular smorgasbord they will face.” Julie Loos, Director, Ratio Christi Boosters

Brit Hume: Rubio's Debate Performance Reminded Me Of Dan Quayle

BRIT HUME: Trying to assess how much harm has been done to Marco Rubio tonight, his performance reminded me of nothing so much as Dan Quayle in the 1988 [vice] presidential debate when he was asked repeatedly what he would do if he suddenly became president... and he fumbled the question... and that led to the famous moment where Lloyd Benson who was running for VP for the Democrats... said "I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine and you're no Jack Kennedy." It fed a narrative about him that [Quayle] was young and inexperienced... so these things can have a lasting impression.

Televangelism Has Started to Come to Netflix

You may start noticing a new trend on Netflix. This December, sermon series from four prominent pastors—Joyce Meyer, Steven Furtick, Andy Stanley and Ed Young—were all added to the streaming content platform as part of a new effort led by Young to get Christian teachings on Netflix. In an interview with RNS , the executive director of marketing for Joyce Meyers said that Netflix asked that the pastors avoid promoting products and soliciting donations, but was relatively open when it came to the content of the sermons. Young told RNS, “Jesus said that we should become fishers of men. If I’m going to catch the most fish, I’ve got to put a lot of hooks in the water. But I’m most excited about Netflix right now.”

The Consequences of Forgiven Sin

By the power of truth and the Spirit, we must learn to revel in the grace of God, the forgiveness of sins, the hope of glory, the joy of the Lord at the very same time that we may be suffering from the consequences of forgiven sin. We must not equate forgiveness with absence of painful impact. David’s life is a vivid illustration of this truth. May God give us the grace to learn it and live it.

Why Do Christians Fast?

So several things stand out in that passage. One is that Jesus says, “ When you fast,” not “ If you fast.” That is what I mean when I say it seems that he expects that his followers will be fasting. But even more clear in this passage is that Jesus insisted that our fasting not be for the sake of impressing other people. In fact, we should go out of our way, he says, as much as possible — washing our face, combing our hair — to keep other people from knowing that we are fasting. And that gives fasting for Christians a radically Godward focus. And in that sense fasting is a great test and confirmation that God is real to us, since in many situations God is the only person who knows you’re fasting. And the discipline can’t impress anybody, and all it can do is test whether you and God are really having a transaction here.
