7 Things Christians Need to Remember About Politics

The country is not going to be destroyed if your candidate loses. As 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Stand up and demonstrate what God has given you. America has functioned—albeit, at varying levels of success—for years under the direction of alternating Democrat and Republican control, and at every flip, the other side thought it was the end of the world. It’s not. And if we’re a Church that believes God is in control, we have to believe that He is the one in control of the end times—not whoever's in office now, and not whoever succeeds them.

Wheaton College, Larycia Hawkins to ‘Part Ways’

In a February 2 letter, Stan Jones told faculty, “I communicated to Dr. Hawkins that I recognize her as a sister in Christ, and that it was never my intent to call the sincerity of her faith into question. I asked Dr. Hawkins for her forgiveness for the ways I contributed to the fracture of our relationship, and to the fracture of Dr. Hawkins’ relationship with the College. While I acted to exercise my position of oversight of the faculty within the bounds of Wheaton College employment policies and procedures, I apologized for my lack of wisdom and collegiality as I initially approached Dr. Hawkins, and for imposing an administrative leave more precipitously than was necessary.”

The Proverbs 31 Man

The mega-grace we enjoy in the gospel gives us the power, the vision, and the heart to build one other up (Eph. 4:29). Brothers, it’s no longer us who live, but Christ who lives in us (Gal. 2:20). The ultimate Proverbs 31 man is alive and well in the heavenly places, leading us, guiding, us, empowering us, and conforming us into his image. The Proverbs 31 man is more than a neat way to go about husbanding—it’s the way of Christ. He rejoices over his bride. He encourages us, walks with us, and fills us with his Spirit. Jesus Christ is the Proverbs 31 man in the flesh. Let’s draw near to him and he will draw near to us—and then we, and the homes we lead, will never be the same.

Lean in on Sunday Morning

Leaning in on Sunday morning has less to do with the posture of your body, and more to do with the stance of your soul — whether your heart is constricted and closed in corporate worship, or swelling in hope and expanding with expectation. Whether you have an attitude of anticipation, or whether society’s increasing cynicism about everything under the sun has come home to roost in your own chest. Whether you’re ready to give the benefit of the doubt to miscues up front and distractions around you in the pews, or are waiting for another excuse to disengage.

“It is no exaggeration to insist that the issue dealt with in this book is more important than any other that one might suggest. For, as Ferguson makes all too clear, the issue is the very definition of the gospel itself. The errors of antinomianism and legalism lie ready to allure unwary hucksters content with mere slogans and rhetoric. I can think of no one I trust more to explore and examine this vital subject than Sinclair Ferguson. For my part, this is one of the most important and definitive books I have read in over four decades.” Derek Thomas , Senior Minister, First Presbyterian Church, Columbia, South Carolina; Robert Strong Professor of Systematic and Pastoral Theology, Reformed Theological Seminary

Three Sightings of the Glory of Jesus

The most ultimate prayer that Jesus prayed for Char — and that could be prayed for Char — was that she would see the glory of the risen Christ and love him with an all-satisfying love the way his Father does. There isn’t anything greater than to see the Son of God in all his divine beauty and radiance and greatness, and be supremely and increasingly happy in him forever. There isn’t anything greater or more profoundly satisfying than this. And this is what Jesus prayed for Char.

Six New Atheist Myths about Jesus and the Gospels | Saints and Sceptics

In the second part of his response to the New Atheism at Fitzroy Presbyterian Church in Belfast, David Glass comments briefly on six of their claims about Jesus and the Gospels. It might be tempting to think that Christians and atheists will just have different views on these subjects and that there is no way to resolve these differences, but on these six claims of the New Atheists David argues that any rational person should reject them. Despite their popularity as objections to Christianity, there are no good reasons to accept them and very good reasons to reject them. These New Atheist myths are:

Finding Truth: 5 Principles for Unmasking Atheism, Secularism, and Other God Substitutes - Kindle edition by Nancy Pearcey. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

Nancy Pearcey’s bestselling and award-winning book "Total Truth" made quite a mark on my life. It was, to my memory, the first book I had ever read on worldview, and its explanation of the way our world divides the sacred and the secular has not only stuck with me, but has helped me better understand and explain the culture around me. Though Pearcey has written another book between then and now, I consider her new work, "Finding Truth," the true sequel to "Total Truth." In "Finding Truth," Pearcey offers 5 principles meant to unmask our culture’s endless worldview alternatives to Christianity—secularism, atheism, and the like. There are all kinds of books that make a similar promise, but this one has a noteworthy difference: Pearcey looks to Romans 1 to find a kind of apologetics training manual for identifying and challenging any other worldview. At the start of Paul’s letter to the church in Rome, he claims that all humanity has access to evidence for God’s existence, and then describes what happens when people refuse to acknowledge him.

A Plea to the Mission Minded

Behold suburbia, the mission field for whom our hearts do not break. We hold them in contempt as those who have heard and spurned the gospel. Their failing marriages, rebellious children, and quiet addictions stir in us weariness and wariness: This is their own doing. This is the fruit of their commonplace lives of capitulation and mediocrity. Suffering and loss may visit them, but they still drive to hospitals and gravesites in late-model SUVs. Why should we pour out our lives on the rocky soil of suburban America when, for the price of a plane ticket, we can till the fertile fields of Africa, Asia, South America?

Against Our Own Sin by Steven Lawson | February 6, 2016

The Russian novelist Alexander Solzhenitsyn once wrote: “The line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being.” As Christians, it is very easy to fall into the trap of seeing the enemy as “over there.” If we draw the lines clearly enough and build the walls high enough, we will be safe. Or so we think. We very easily forget that we war not only against the world and the devil, but also against our own sinful flesh.

The Law Always Condemns, The Gospel Always Saves. Or, why I'm a Lutheran.

As a Jew who is a Christian, I had to resolve this for myself. The understanding I came to is that no single Law can be followed totally and for all time. However, the Law in its totality can be fulfilled. The Jewish Law in particular is fulfilled when you give a sacrifice for your sins, when you atone. The Israelites, later Jews, did this for millenia, until the 2nd temple was destroyed. However, Christ wanted us to be have the Law continue being fulfilled in our lives, and so He gave Himself as the perfect sacrifice, the perfect fulfillment of the Law. So, I was given the Law of Moses, and a sacrifice fulfills it, as it always has. Jesus did not change that. But instead of covering my sin, as the sacrifices given before could only do, Jesus wipes it away completely. And so the Law is fulfilled in my life. Therefore Jesus is not contra-law for me, but right within it, because the Laws purpose was never to condemn, but to save me. However, it can only save me by pointing out my failures, and then giving me a way to be redeemed for those failures… which it does, and Jesus fulfills that.

24 Triablogue: John's Gospel and the Virgin Birth

My view is that there's a reasonable possibility, but not a probability, that John 8:41 is alluding to the virgin birth claim. More significant are: - The likely reference to Luke's gospel as scripture in 1 Timothy 5:18, thereby indirectly affirming the virgin birth. - Matthew's use of source material that affirmed the virgin birth, source material that even liberal scholars often argue for. As Charles Quarles notes: "That allusion or affirmation of the virginal conception appears in multiple pre-Matthew sources should make one pause before dismissing it too lightly." (in Robert Stewart and Gary Habermas, edd., Memories Of Jesus [Nashville, Tennessee: B&H Publishing Group, 2010], approximate Kindle location 4168) - Since it's unlikely that the early Christians made up the premarital timing of Mary's pregnancy, there's a need to explain why that premarital timing wasn't considered scandalous, and thus needing more of a defense, among the early Christians. The best explanation for why the premarital timing was accepted without an accompanying sense of scandal and the resulting defensiveness is that the belief in the premarital timing was accompanied by a belief in a virginal conception.

5 Verses Christians Like to Ignore

The Sermon on the Mount is one of Jesus’ most radical messages. In verse 38 of Matthew 5, Christ turns old logic on its head and asks His followers to think about their “enemies” in a new way. We’re all most likely familiar with Jesus’ command turn the other cheek (“If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also”), but the heart of the message isn’t just about forgiveness; it’s also about a posture of grace and compassion—not defensiveness.

Testimony: When God Writes Your Life Story

Vienna’s friendliness soon drew me out of my shell. A postal worker came from behind the counter to re-tie my scarf. Bakers stuffed free cookies into my bag. Classmates ignored my nonverbal cues and kept inviting me to concerts, museums, and films. Mornings were full of classes in art history, German, and music, but in the afternoons I would squeeze in a few lonely rambles. When the snowfall grew heavy, I ducked into cathedrals. Stained glass glowed in soft patterns of mustard, saffron, indigo, and coral. Arches and vaults soared so high I could hardly see where they intersected. Always, the twisted, half-naked figure on the cross at the front shone as if he were sweating.

Why Christians Can’t Be Silent About Politics

What are you talking about?? We have no more choice this time than in past elections. Short memory. The current political complexity is a reflection of cultural complexity, and it has brought out extreme candidates to match the extreme culture. Bernie Sanders is a response to the ever widening rich-poor gap than none of the Republicans nor the church speaks to with any sincerity. Trump plays on our fears of other nationalities/religions and a growing discontent at Washington. Hillary is the establishment as are the rest of the Republicans, sans Carson & Fiorina, and they have absolutely no chance. So, the only choice is the warmed over lesser-of-two-evils.

50 Years of Sex Changes, Mental Disorders, and Too Many Suicides

Television networks such as ABC that glamorize transgenders like Bruce Jenner, in his psychological turmoil, do a great disservice to transgender people and to those who treat them by denying them a safe environment in which to tackle the deeper issues of comorbid disorders and suicide. Continuing to ignore history and the warnings in studies and reports—however inconvenient or politically incorrect they may seem—is no solution to the treatment of psychological disorders. Ignoring suicides will not help to prevent them. Outlawing certain medical interventions when we know that 90% of suicides are due to untreated mental disorders and that a majority of transgender people have coexisting psychological disorders doesn’t advance effective treatment protocols; it shuts down the freedom to follow where science leads.

Blog: CNN owes Ted Cruz an apology

Somewhat ironically, the network rests much of its case on tweets rather than on-air coverage.  CNN concedes that during the Iowa caucuses the network reported that Carson would not be going from Iowa to New Hampshire as the other candidates would.  But after Cruz's people used the report as their reason for suggesting Carson might be getting out of the race, CNN on Wednesday declared, "Senator Cruz's claims about CNN are false. At no point did the network indicate Dr. Carson would suspend his campaign."

When Life Doesn't Turn out Like It's 'Supposed to'

The "list" doesn't stop in your late 20's. It continues on into your 40's and I'm guessing the list continues and changes throughout your life. In my mid 40's now I'm supposed to be established in my career, have a decent start on retirement, be mature, the "mid-life-crisis", and I'm sure each has their own list. I'll be 44 in the spring and I can tell you that I'm not established in my career. In fact, I've merged my business with two others, taken a huge pay cut, I'm working a part time job to make ends almost meet and looking to start another business to help bring in more cash flow. I have zero retirement in place, and if being worn out is a sign of maturity then I'm very mature. Life in my 40's has been every bit as much a roller coaster ride as life in my 20's & 30's. New church. New work. New challenges, victories and defeats. If social media is to be believed I could look at my high school and college classmates and believe that I am an anomaly. Expensive vacations, new cars, kids being accepted to prestigious universities, career success all seem to be the normal posts.

Mark Driscoll Is Starting A New Church in Arizona

Well, it's official: Mark and Grace Driscoll have announced that they are planting a church in Phoenix, Arizona. The Trinity Church , named after Grace Driscoll’s home church, shares a similar board of advisers to Mars Hill Church—the church in Seattle that Driscoll pastored for the better part of two decades before resigning amid several controversies—even though the words "mars hill" seem to be banned from all communication about this new church. The four pastors who are providing "wise council" include Larry Osbourne, Randal Taylor, Jimmy Evans and Robert Morris. So far, the church is made up of a small team and a P.O. Box, but they are hoping to have services and other ministry opportunities up and running later this year.

5 Books You Should Read This Election Year

This book serves as a worthwhile introduction to the major views of political engagement. I found myself nodding my head in agreement with much of the Anabaptist chapter (we need their emphasis on ethics and the political witness that comes from the church being the church!), and I’m inspired by the hurdles overcome by the prophetic witness of the black church. Overall, my position is closest to the one presented by James K. A. Smith (the transformationist view), which is why the next two books on my list build on that particular perspective.

Why Don't More Churches Ask Women to Lead?

According to a Barna study , the majority of Christian women believe they are making the most of their gifts and potential at church. However, not all women are thriving. Many are “frustrated by their lack of opportunities at church and feel misunderstood and undervalued by their church leaders.” One in five feel under-utilized. Thirty-seven percent of women believe their church would have more effective ministry if women were given more opportunities to lead. And 41% of women say they have more opportunities to lead outside of their church. The numbers point at important realities and questions—Is Christ’s body missing out on a treasure trove of gifts? Why don’t more churches ask women to lead? What can we do to cultivate the leadership gifts of women?

42
Evangelism Is More Than a Formulaic Prayer

This tendency to find meaning in our successes is undeniably cross-cultural, indispensably human and as old as Eden. The first murder recorded in history occurred because of a struggle over success and shattered expectations (Genesis 4). One brother’s offering did not garner the results he desired. When by faith Abel produced an offering more acceptable to God, his brother Cain, unwilling to live in a world where someone else was more successful, killed his brother and removed his competition. He followed the formula: gather the offering, give it to God, get God’s favor.

43
Why Donald Trump Threatens to Trump the Gospel

This sort of political discourse is starting to affect how evangelicals talk about Trump. A notable exception is Russell Moore. He has consistently presented a line of argument —and not just name calling. His major thesis is that Trump is immoral by Christian standards. This is a fact: from Trump’s owning of strip clubs to his bragging about sleeping around to his Nietzsche-esque notions of power. Moore believes that a leader’s moral behavior will affect his leadership, so he argues that no Christian should support a candidate like Trump. This will not convince all Christians, but at least it’s an argument grounded in the fact of Trump’s moral behavior.

The Dean Scream: What Really Happened

Twelve years ago, just after the 2004 Iowa caucuses, Democratic candidate Howard Dean raised his voice, balled his fist and entered political history as a man whose immoderate speaking style cost him a career. That’s the accepted narrative, at least, of what happened in that year’s presidential race. But the truth is not always what the crowd remembers. In this short film, produced by FiveThirtyEight and ESPN Films and directed by Bryan Storkel, Dean and others who know the race well recall what really happened. It’s the first film in this year’s FiveThirtyEight Elections series. And be sure to listen to the companion podcast documentary about why the Dean Scream sounded so different on TV.

Stop Being Over-Sensitive

The truth is, taking ownership of someone else’s moods isn’t healthy or what God wants for us. When we do that, we burden ourselves for no good reason since we did nothing wrong. We devalue our peace and well being. We also prevent the other person from taking responsibility for - and learning from - their own behavior. Scripture says we “each will have to bear (our) own load, and be held responsible for it” (Galatians 6:5, Romans 14:12).

I present you with Exhibit A: Jessica Lynch. Male lives will be lost trying to protect their female comrades. And the people of the US are NOT, based on the Jessica Lynch episode, prepared to treat a female POW the same way they do a man.

How to Find More Meaning at Work

After all, getting to the goal is not all that exists. Sometimes, the trip is just as great as the destination. If vacation was only composed of the arrival at a destination and getting back home, what rest would it give?
