'Black Panther' Breakout Star Letitia Wright Shares How Christianity Changed Her Life

Why Do We Need Apologetics?

I didn’t used to think apologetics was for me. My husband is an apologist, but I thought that was just a particular route Christians could choose to take to evangelize. After listening to him talk for years about how I should learn more about apologetics, though, I finally took his advice. I began to realize that my faith needed a firmer grounding than only my emotions, which is what I had relied upon for most of my life. This realization led me to pursue a master’s degree in apologetics and ethics at Denver Seminary.

Are There "Limits" to God's Power? | Cold Case Christianity

When someone asks, “Can the all-powerful Christian God create a stone so heavy he cannot lift it?” they are asking a logically incoherent question. It is the equivalent of asking, “Can God create a ‘square circle’?” Circles and squares are mutually exclusive by their very definition. As a result, the question nonsensically queries the creation of something similarly nonsensical. God cannot create square circles for the same reason He cannot sin; He acts dependably in a manner consistent with His moral and logical nature, and our universe is the beneficiary of God’s dependable nature. Those who ask logically incoherent questions of this kind are requiring God to violate His nature (His logical coherency) in order to demonstrate His nature (His power).

Isaiah's Signature Uncovered in Jerusalem: Evidence of the Prophet Isaiah?

Mazar’s team found the seal impression in an undisturbed area of Iron Age debris (dated to the eighth–seventh centuries B.C.E.) right outside the southeastern wall of the royal bakery, a structure that had been integrated into the city’s fortifications and had operated until the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. All of the excavated dirt from this area of the Ophel was wet-sifted, meaning that it was placed on a sifting screen and washed with water. This process revealed multiple finds—including Isaiah’s seal impression and an impression of the Judahite king Hezekiah —which had been missed during traditional excavation methods. Since each of these impressions has a diameter of about half an inch and is the same color as the dirt, it is easy to understand why they were not spotted in the field.

Four things Billy Graham's life can teach us

Why? What lessons can we glean from a life well-lived? Four qualities, I believe, helped establish Graham as a trustworthy messenger of the Gospel – and I believe we all can learn from these traits that he has so powerfully exhibited.

The Art of Christian Listening

Both in my personal life and related to apologetics, I’ve been thinking a lot about the importance of hearing and listening to people. A mark of God-pleasing thinking is our willingness to cultivate Christian listening. This means non-aggressively hearing them and even welcoming their potential insights. Here I’d like to suggest some practical steps toward better listening. But first, unpack the Christian in Christian listening.

13
GK Chesterton the Apologist

When we think of Chesterton today, we think of Father Brown, the quintessential priest-detective. But, like Conan Doyle, who believed his more serious writings were more important than his Sherlock Holmes stories, Chesterton’s central thrust (even in the persona of Father Brown) was elsewhere. At heart, Chesterton was a controversalist, or, better, an apologist. What he really wanted to achieve was to bring his contemporaries (and us!) back to sanity by showing the truth of classic Christian orthodoxy.

14
Does Jesus fit or fulfill the Isaiah 53 prophecy?

Regarding (b) , however, one can establish that Jesus in concept played this substitutionary role, and that he fit the various spiritual criterion in this conceptual way. After all, the concept of Jesus is wrapped up in how he and his death are described by the the early church and New Testament authors. There seem to be two ways in which Jesus, in concept, could fit (b), given that the conditions of Isaiah 53 are sufficiently stringent. Either Jesus's fulfillment of it was divinely arranged, or an author to some degree invented the conceptual Jesus, perhaps intending to conform him to the prophecy.

15
Is a Great Revival Coming to America?

As Charles Finney said, "A revival always includes conviction of sin on the part of the Church. Backslidden [Christians] cannot wake up and begin right away in the service of God, without deep searchings of heart. The fountains of sin need to be broken up. In a true revival, Christians are always brought under such conviction; they see their sins in such a light that often they find it impossible to maintain a hope of their acceptance with God. It does not always go that extent, but there are always, in a genuine revival, deep convictions of sin, and often cases of abandoning all hope."

Simple Tools to Test Truth Claims

The tools given in this article do not only apply to syllogisms, they apply to any truth claim. The fact is that not everything you hear from others, read online and in the newspapers, or see on television is based on truth. Use these tools, and you will have, what I call, an instant bologna tester. You will be able to decipher truth from fiction. As wonderful as it is to proclaim, Christianity gloriously holds to the test of truth. That being said, the Christian should strive to find the truth, because the “truth will set you free” (Jn. 8:32, CSB).

18
Even extraordinary claims require only ordinary evidence!

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a post describing how some critics of Christianity use demands for “evidence” as a way of dodging tough questions rather than dealing with them. In that post, I described a hypothetical example of two strangers: one tells me he has a pet dog and the other tells me he has a pet sloth. In these cases, I would be apt to believe the claim to own a dog but be skeptical of the claim to own a sloth.

Nigeria Confirms 110 School Girls Are Missing

Initially, it was unclear how many girls had been abducted, with some reports saying 50 were missing. The state government then said on Wednesday that some of the girls had been rescued, prompting confusion and then despair when it turned out not to be the case. Frantic parents put together their own list of the missing, estimating that some 105 girls were unaccounted for in the wake of the attack, according to Reuters.

Parents: Train Your Young Christians by Finding the Right Mentor | Cold Case Christianity

Like most parents, I’ve done my best to share the truth with my kids and help prepare them to defend what they believe. But there are times when all my talks and efforts to teach and train them have probably been less than successful. I can’t tell you how many times one of my kids has come home and told me about an epiphany they had when a mentor said something my wife or I had been saying for years. They acted like it was the first time they had ever heard it. I typically feel like reminding them I have been saying the same thing, but I usually bite my tongue. I may have been saying it, but for one reason or another, they simply weren’t hearing it. But by helping my kids find the right mentor, I found a way to deliver the same message through a younger, hipper, more culturally aware messenger who shared my kid’s interests and experiences. One way or the other, they got the information they needed. So, look for mentors as you raise your kids in the faith; the right mentor can make all the difference in the world.

Carbon, the Miracle Element

If it were not for the near equivalences or resonances of the nuclear energy levels of two helium nuclei relative to a beryllium nucleus and a beryllium nucleus plus a helium nucleus relative to a carbon nucleus, the universe would contain very little or no carbon and very little or no elements heavier than carbon. Life would be impossible. Furthermore, unless the difference in the nuclear energy levels between a carbon nucleus and an oxygen nucleus was precisely 0.53 million electron volts, the universe either would contain a lot of carbon and no oxygen or a lot of oxygen and no carbon. Either way, physical life would be impossible in the universe.

27 The Hermeneutic Challenge of CBS’ Living Biblically | Think Christian

Perhaps a deeper theological danger is that this view of “living biblically” makes the Bible all about us. In other words, it becomes all law and no gospel; it’s about what we can do for God rather than about what God in Christ has done for us. The end goal, then, is not the glory of God because of God’s amazing work of redemption. Rather, the goal is my self-improvement and fulfillment. This comes through in the show’s emphasis on how Chip just wants to be “a better man.” God and the Bible are useful insofar as they are helpful to me in my journey. As a result, I end up instrumentalizing God and Scripture, turning them into one more therapy to help me grow to become a better me. Who could object to that? Certainly not Chip’s wife, who seems amenable to this project so long as it’s conceived under this therapeutic rubric of maximizing self-growth and development. But what if Chip follows the Bible and it ends up in him being “worse,” at least by the standards of his wife and the surrounding culture?

Taking the Offense without Being Offensive

Suppose your favorite NFL team is headed to overtime in a tie game and ends up winning the coin toss. Would you want your team to kick off or receive? It’s a no-brainer. Even the most defensive-minded fan wants his team to have the ball. After all, the team receiving the kickoff can win the game by scoring a touchdown in its initial possession. While the defense could cause a turnover, pick up the ball, and run eighty yards for the tie-breaking score, there is a better opportunity to get into the end zone when your team is in control.

5 really bad reasons Christians avoid apologetics

Congratulations. You passed the first hurdle. Having seen the word 'apologetics' in the title, you still managed to read this far! To put it mildly, apologetics has a bad image. Indeed, such a bad image that at Solas we prefer to use the term 'persuasive evangelism' because apologetics either carries the notion of saying sorry for being a Christian, or of some male geeky nerd pontificating on the teleological argument. Like all caricatures there is some element of truth in this, but it is overall grossly unfair. It's time to rescue apologetics from this particular cul-de-sac and instead realise the usefulness of the apologia (defence) of the Gospel, in proclaiming the Good News in today's needy world. So lets look at some of the objections that stop Christians even considering apologetics in the first place.

Unfortunately, however, Pinker’s overweening faith in science as a reliable path to the truth has its own problems. However, although observation and experimentation are the crux of the scientific method, there are many different kinds of science, some more reliable than others.

7 things every Christian can learn from Billy Graham

Definitive pronouncements about a person’s legacy are best left to future historians, but in the case of Billy Graham, certain reliable observations can be made now. As I both mourn his passing today, and rejoice that he is now with the Savior whom he deeply loved, I offer these reflections on his enduring legacy. These observations are not about the vast numerical impact of his evangelistic ministry (such as preaching to over 200 million people), but about his on-going legacy from which we can draw inspiration in our own lives and ministries today.

Sin Will Never Make You Happy

What is the sword of the Spirit? It’s the word of God (Ephesians 6:17). Here’s where faith comes in. “Faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ” (Romans 10:17). The word of God cuts through the fog of Satan’s lies and shows me where true and lasting happiness is to be found. And so the word helps me stop trusting in the potential of sin to make me happy, and instead entices me to trust in God’s promise of joy (Psalm 16:11).

Why Gen Z’s Call for ‘Safe Spaces’ Is Good News for Churches

This aspect of the Gen Z worldview often gets maligned by older generations, who sometimes dismiss safe spaces and trigger warnings as a result of an oversensitive “snowflake mentality.” However, youth leaders increasingly see the motivations beneath these values—care for others and compassion to understand others’ experiences—as significant for Christian ministry.

Apologetics: vital to young people serious about evangelism

Each of us has been given the assignment of not only presenting the gospel but also explaining and defending the truths of our message to the world around us. Christianity is truth, not mere fables or myths (
