7 Fascinating Facts that Make the Bible Unique

The Bible is a unique book. There is no other book that even stands in its category. Below are seven factors that show how the Bible stands apart from all other books in history. We list many more facts in the updated Evidence that Demands a Verdict .

Persuasion versus Argument in Apologetics

The good news when it comes to evangelism and apologetics is that Jesus does not call us to argue with people in a contentious manner, but rather to seek to persuade. The good news of Jesus was never spread through quarreling, but through persuasion. Persuasion can be defined as the art of speaking to people who are indifferent or resistant to what we have to say, and moving them closer to our position.[1] Returning to 1 Peter 3:15-16 we note several principles regarding persuasion in apologetics:[2]

Four things Billy Graham's life can teach us

Why? What lessons can we glean from a life well-lived? Four qualities, I believe, helped establish Graham as a trustworthy messenger of the Gospel – and I believe we all can learn from these traits that he has so powerfully exhibited.

Is Science Objective? Steven Pinker’s Counterattack Against the “War on Science” | Evolution News

Unfortunately, however, Pinker’s overweening faith in science as a reliable path to the truth has its own problems. First, he seems to assume that “science” is a single, unified front, always striving for objective truth in the face of religious or philosophical obscurantism. However, although observation and experimentation are the crux of the scientific method, there are many different kinds of science, some more reliable than others.

7 things every Christian can learn from Billy Graham

Definitive pronouncements about a person’s legacy are best left to future historians, but in the case of Billy Graham, certain reliable observations can be made now. As I both mourn his passing today, and rejoice that he is now with the Savior whom he deeply loved, I offer these reflections on his enduring legacy. These observations are not about the vast numerical impact of his evangelistic ministry (such as preaching to over 200 million people), but about his on-going legacy from which we can draw inspiration in our own lives and ministries today.

Are Christians Biased in Their Reasoning? (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner Wallace examines the popular objection that Christians are biased toward their beliefs and, therefore, cannot assess evidence fairly. Is this true? Is anyone truly free of bias and what role does this play in making decisions in the first place? (For more information, visit www.ColdCaseChristianity.com ).

14 The Hermeneutic Challenge of CBS’ Living Biblically | Think Christian

Perhaps a deeper theological danger is that this view of “living biblically” makes the Bible all about us. In other words, it becomes all law and no gospel; it’s about what we can do for God rather than about what God in Christ has done for us. The end goal, then, is not the glory of God because of God’s amazing work of redemption. Rather, the goal is my self-improvement and fulfillment. This comes through in the show’s emphasis on how Chip just wants to be “a better man.” God and the Bible are useful insofar as they are helpful to me in my journey. As a result, I end up instrumentalizing God and Scripture, turning them into one more therapy to help me grow to become a better me. Who could object to that? Certainly not Chip’s wife, who seems amenable to this project so long as it’s conceived under this therapeutic rubric of maximizing self-growth and development. But what if Chip follows the Bible and it ends up in him being “worse,” at least by the standards of his wife and the surrounding culture?

In What Way Will Christians Judge Angels?

Then he says, “This body is the fullness of him who fills all in all.” Now what could that possibly mean? What does it mean that the church, as the body of the ruler of the universe, fills it all? My suggestion is that the way Jesus fills the universe is with his rule, his control, and his judgment. He does this by means of his body, who shares in that rule, control, and judgment by sitting on the very throne with Jesus.

Rules to Evaluate Alleged Bible Contradictions and Difficulties (Free Bible Insert) | Cold Case Christianity

I’ve been slowly working through a number of alleged Bible “contradictions” and “difficulties” here at ColdCaseChristianity.com , using simple investigative principles I’ve adapted from my casework as a cold-case homicide detective. Here is short list of the rules I typically use when evaluating eyewitness statements. The first ten principles are derived directly from my casework related to homicide investigations (modified to address the Biblical narratives), and I’ve added three rules specifically applicable to the study of the New and Old Testament:

Is a Great Revival Coming to America?

As Charles Finney said, "A revival always includes conviction of sin on the part of the Church. Backslidden [Christians] cannot wake up and begin right away in the service of God, without deep searchings of heart. The fountains of sin need to be broken up. In a true revival, Christians are always brought under such conviction; they see their sins in such a light that often they find it impossible to maintain a hope of their acceptance with God. It does not always go that extent, but there are always, in a genuine revival, deep convictions of sin, and often cases of abandoning all hope."

Isaiah's Signature Uncovered in Jerusalem: Evidence of the Prophet Isaiah?

Mazar’s team found the seal impression in an undisturbed area of Iron Age debris (dated to the eighth–seventh centuries B.C.E.) right outside the southeastern wall of the royal bakery, a structure that had been integrated into the city’s fortifications and had operated until the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem in 586 B.C.E. All of the excavated dirt from this area of the Ophel was wet-sifted, meaning that it was placed on a sifting screen and washed with water. This process revealed multiple finds—including Isaiah’s seal impression and an impression of the Judahite king Hezekiah —which had been missed during traditional excavation methods. Since each of these impressions has a diameter of about half an inch and is the same color as the dirt, it is easy to understand why they were not spotted in the field.

25
Are There “Limits” to God’s Power?

When someone asks, “Can the all-powerful Christian God create a stone so heavy he cannot lift it?” they are asking a logically incoherent question. It is the equivalent of asking, “Can God create a ‘square circle’?” Circles and squares are mutually exclusive by their very definition. As a result, the question nonsensically queries the creation of something similarly nonsensical. God cannot create square circles for the same reason He cannot sin; He acts dependably in a manner consistent with His moral and logical nature, and our universe is the beneficiary of God’s dependable nature. Those who ask questions of this kind are requiring God to violate His logically coherent nature in order to demonstrate His powerful nature.

New CBS Sitcom ‘Living Biblically’ Brings Faith to Primetime

, follows a New York film critic named Chip (Jay R. Ferguson) who picks up a Bible at a bookstore and decides to start living a strictly biblical life. But what does that mean? And why does he do it? The latter is an easier question to answer. Unlike Jacobs, whose “year of living biblically” is just a stunt to write a book about, Chip’s motivation is earnest. He’s just lost his best friend, and his wife, Leslie (Lindsey Kraft), is expecting their first child. At a crossroads and seeking “to be a better man,” he turns to the Bible for answers. Chip assembles a “God squad”—comprised of a Catholic priest (Ian Gomez) and Jewish rabbi (David Krumholtz)—to guide him (often over drinks at a local pub) as he embarks on a spiritual journey to live his life “100 percent by the Bible.”

Jerusalem Christians Unite ... to Close Church of the Holy Sepulchre

“Recently, this systematic and offensive campaign has reached an unprecedented level as the Jerusalem Municipality issued scandalous collection notices and orders of seizure of church assets, properties and bank accounts for alleged debts of punitive municipal taxes—a step that is contrary to the historic position of the churches within the Holy City of Jerusalem and their relationship with the civil authorities,” the church leaders stated. “These actions breach existing agreements and international obligations which guarantee the rights and the privileges of the churches, in what seems as an attempt to weaken the Christian presence in Jerusalem.”

When God Does the Miracle We Didn’t Ask For

God has delivered me and answered some prayers with a resounding “yes” in jaw-dropping, supernatural ways. I look back at them with gratitude and awe. Yet after those prayers were answered, I went back to my everyday life, often less dependent on God. But the answers of “no” or “wait,” and those answered by imperceptible degrees over time, have done a far deeper work in my soul. They have kept me connected to the Giver and not his gifts. They have forced me to seek him. And in seeking him, I have discovered the intimacy of his fellowship.

42
Killing Sin Does Not Make You New

Yes, every true Christian will be killing sin. Any other version or distortion of Christianity falls short of what Christ died for. “Put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires” (Ephesians 4:22). “If you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live” (Romans 8:13). If we do not kill sin, we will die in our sin. But if we wage war against our sin, in the power of the Spirit, we prove that Christ is alive in us, and that we will never die.

Will God Ever Give Us More Than We Can Handle?

When Paul says he won’t give what is beyond what you are able, he means, not beyond what you are able with God’s help . We know that because of a couple of other things he says. For example, in 2 Corinthians 9:8 he says, “God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work.” In other words, in every test or temptation, the question is, “Will I do what I ought to do?” And Paul says, “There will be grace,” not just, “I am depending on you to use your resources without depending on grace.” “I am giving you grace so there will be grace to do it. But you are not independent of my powers to help.”

Remembering Billy Graham (1918-2018)

Dwight Moody's appeal is harder to figure. Of grandfatherly mien, he was portly and genial. He preached less about sin and more about love. All the old drawings of him in the pulpit give the impression he must have been stolid and ponderous. Yet it was Moody—more than Whitefield, Finney, and Sunday put together—who was Billy Graham's true predecessor. It was Moody whom Graham admired; Moody who, in fact, made it possible for Graham to do what he did. For "Crazy" Moody was the architect who drew up the plans and laid the foundation for 20th-century evangelicalism. Then Billy Graham took over the project and built it to dimensions beyond any of Moody's craziest dreams. By the start of the 21st century, the Moody-Graham project had reshaped the skyline of American Christianity and had launched a new kind of ecumenical movement that reached into every corner of the globe.
