How to be a Christian Ambassador in Troubled Times - Apologetics Guy

Living in Troubled Times Growing up in the 80’s and 90’s, I seem to recall some Christians who saw engaging the culture more like fighting a “culture war” for Jesus. But things have changed over the past few decades. Today, we find ourselves in the position of a cultural minority in our country. The question is, “How should we …

Jennifer Garner Returned to Church After Appearing in Faith-Based Movie

Actress Jennifer Garner is starring in an upcoming movie called Miracles from Heaven. The film is based on the true story of the Beam family who had to lean on their faith during their daughter's near-death experience and her long battle with a chronic digestive disease. Garner, who plays Christy Beam, the mother of the young girl, got a lot more out of the experience than just a good movie. While on the road promoting the film, she stopped by Bishop T.D. Jakes' church to attend Sunday service and spoke about the life-changing impact the movie has played in her personal life. "I fell so in love with this family, I fell so in love with their love for each other. I fell so in love with their faith. It was a transformative experience to play this woman right here, she made me stronger," she said about playing Christy. Garner hasn't openly spoken about her faith in the past, a fact she attributes to her community in Los Angeles. "[Faith] is a topic that has become very political. If you're a person of faith, you are so on the outside, that there's no way to bridge to somebody that's 'normal'," she shared during a Q&A in Dallas. The actress noted that the normal posture of the industry doesn't include talking about faith in between takes, but this movie was very different in that respect. A fact that she says had an impact on her family: I will say that being around this community, and while I've always gone to church in West Virginia, that when I got back to Los Angeles, I was talking to my kids about the movie and they said, 'Mom you don't take us to church,' and we went that Sunday, and they went today without me. That decision was a direct gift from this movie and for that I'm very grateful.

7 Signs You’re Spending Too Much Time Looking at Your Phone

Recent research has confirmed that cell phone “addiction” is actually a real thing. Professionals have even devised methods of determining if you suffer from a psychological condition that warrants actual medical intervention ( symptoms include : reduction of competing behaviors, engaging in the behavior despite risks and negative consequences, withdrawal, etc.). But even if you’re not neurologically dependent on playing Kim Kardashian’s iPhone game for a few moments while you’re pumping gas, there still may be ways to determine that you are spending too much time looking at your phone.

The Meaning of Manhood

As I grew in my understanding of biblical manhood, I discovered that true manhood demanded more of me. As a single man, I had failed to put into practice what I knew marriage would require. I secretly thought that marriage would miraculously change me and make me a better man. I didn’t drink from the fountain of true manhood as a single guy, so I’m now drinking from a fire hose as a new husband. Now I'm learning the hard way about the high and hard calling of manhood.

We invite you to the conference for women, but not all about women. It's a gathering of women around the Word of God. To this third TGC Women's Conference, we come joyfully but soberly, knowing that suffering meets us at every hand, right at home and all across the globe. What better book for us in 2016 than 1 Peter—packed with gospel perspective on our short lives. It's a little epistle, but it gives us a big view of who we are in Christ and how we are to live as redeemed sojourners in this world. How do we stand firm in God's true grace? How do we offer a strong shining witness to Jesus Christ even in the midst of fiery trials? Peter points us insistently to the Lord Jesus, to his suffering on our behalf, and to the resurrection life he makes possible for those who believe in him. At TGCW16 we won't be getting away from real life; we will be seeing it clearly, in light of gospel help and hope. By God's grace, we will go away better prepared to live and share resurrection life, in a world of suffering.

How Christians Ruin Dating

I don't think there is one person who has the title "The One," but rather God leads you to someone and puts those desires in your heart to pursue a future with them, and to honor Him and live for Him not just in your relationship with that person, but in every aspect of your life along the way. Not everything or everyone put in front of you is a test, which I used to believe. I had forgot that the Lord is good, and he knows what I need and knows my heart is after him, and honors that! God led me to my boyfriend through crazy circumstances. We aren't perfectly compatible, he wasn't everything on my "list" -- he is who I ACTUALLY needed. Not someone just like me or this perfect picture of a worship leader / knight in shining armor. He is real, he has taught me so much through his relationship with the Lord, and he is so many things I wish I was. We're not each others' "types" if you will, but we still are so attracted to each other. It has been the Lord who led us to each other and grew us closer, and I believe has given us the desire to be together. It's really profound to me.

7 Terry Crews Calls Porn 'An Intimacy Killer' in New Follow-Up Videos

Since actor Terry Crews posted a video confessional to Facebook earlier this month opening up about his past pornography addiction, he's received an influx of questions from fans who are struggling with addiction and want help. This unexpected and refreshingly honest dialog has led to two more videos from Crews that talk through the differences between guilt and shame, and the importance of confronting the problem of pornography.

How Can Rubio and Cruz Stop Trump? Flip a Coin | The Stream

Donald Trump just won the Nevada caucuses by a wide margin, and conservative commentator Jonah Goldberg is making  the case that a Rubio-Cruz compact, with Florida Senator Marco Rubio at the top of the ticket and Texas Senator Ted Cruz agreeing to drop out in exchange for the VP slot, may be the only way to stop Trump from winning the nomination. But what are the odds the ambitious Cruz would agree to play second fiddle given all the bad blood between the two senators? The opposite scenario, with Rubio playing second fiddle, is just as unlikely, particularly since Rubio finished just ahead of Cruz in South Carolina and Nevada. Neither man is likely to agree to take the VP slot soon enough for a Rubicruz or Cruzio nomination missile to derail the Trump Express. So here’s my idea: flip a coin.

8 Biographies Everyone Should Read

In today's intellectual climate of specialization, I would like to see more biographies like the Metaxas book. What exactly is Bonhoeffer scholarship standards? If a Bonehoeffer scholar wrote a book about Bonehoeffer, it might not be accessible to the public. My question is--------why aren't there more writers like Metaxas who will make important figures understandable to the public? I read half of the Metaxas book (I had to give it back to my friend) and I found it to be weighty and researched. I especially enjoyed the part of Metaxas book about Bonehoeffer's time in America and his dilemma about what to do here. Maybe you could explain why it is not up to par or better----tell us what we should read that would match your scholarship standards.

Six Things Submission Is Not

What is submission not , according to 1 Peter 3:1–6? When I preached on this passage probably twenty years ago, women in my church found this question really helpful because we bring to the text presuppositions from our experience. You might hear submission means six or seven things, and five of those sound horrible to you, and two look okay.

3 Ways to Preach Heaven

If hell is your future, your best life is now. But if headed for heaven, your best life is still to come. If you’re outside of Christ, in other words, this life is as good as it gets. But if you’re in Christ, your pain in this world is the only pain you’ll ever experience, and your struggles now are the only ones you’ll ever endure.

Husbands, It’s Time to Start Leading Family Worship

Husbands, fathers —if you have been negligent in this duty and great privilege, repent by starting family worship today. Again, you may feel awkward about what to say to your wife or your children about starting, but simply say that God has convicted you of your responsibility to lead in family worship and you want to start at a given time today or tonight. Almost certainly your wife will be thrilled more than you can imagine to hear you say that. Your children may or may not be as enthusiastic, but that does not really matter. The less interest they show, the more your family needs family worship. The Lord will help you. He does not call his Spirit-begotten sons to this task without giving them the power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish it. The same Father who gave you the gospel and who drew you to Christ will strengthen you by his Spirit to put on this badge of godly manhood.

What the Bible Really Says About Politics

Thanks for the reminders during this election season. I think some of these (points 1-2) warrant further discussion. Such as a discussion about how God set up commandments such that we can have mutually exclusive obligations under the first two points: serving government while serving God (e.g that bad guy in Germany circa 1940s vs doing God's will). And so I personally feel least bound to the 'respect governing authority no matter what' commandments-- Perhaps I don't have enough faith to trust that God really put (fill in with name of just about any cruel dictator) into power.

Do Christian Parents Flirt with the Idol of Sports?

Am I guilty of being a sports idolater? Yes. Does this mean I may continue modeling this pattern of behavior for my family? By no means! (Rom. 6:2). Rather, in God’s amazing way, he continually takes my idolatry and redeems it by the power of his gospel. He gives me opportunities to model for my children repentance and the outpouring of his grace (Rom. 5:20). And he continues to grow us as we live in this tension.

What You Can Actually Do After a Breakup

The breakup line, it's God telling me to break up, is a cop out. God doesn't decide these things for us, it's our free choice and we can pray that he blesses our choices. We also don't date people who are abusive, or whichever non-negotiable vice, but God doesn't have a predetermined plan for us, he doesn't decide for us unless it affects His kingdom, like being called to be a missionary because your heart has moved so close to God's you share the same passion for the lost. Using God as a cop out excuse stops both parties from healing, it creates amenity between someone and God and it doesn't lead to Christian reconciliation. If you don't go through this season growing the same issue will occur till you learn to take ownership of your choices and learn to be a good romantic partner in a healthy relationship.

381. Do Christians Believe In Three Gods?

Bobby clarifies the orthodox Christian doctrine of the Trinity.

What Is the Source of Biblical Love?

“Love is a decision.” “You have to choose to love.” We’ve heard statements like these inside and outside of the church. Perhaps we understand what many are attempting to communicate. The sentiment is a reaction to the widely accepted notion that love is a feeling. But feelings are fickle and change constantly. So, if love is defined by the way you feel, love is always unstable.

The Top Five Reasons Faith is Not What You Think It Is

The Bible's definition of faith is simple, easy, and straightforward. But there are influences both inside and outside the church that confuse the biblical definition. Imagine the biblical definition as the ingredients to a fruit smoothie and the bad influences are chocolate, salt and pepper, and fish. When you blend it all together the once delicious drink is now a goopy mess, not exactly appetizing; a definition that the world laughs at. The sneaky part about the smoothie illustration is this: the false information that gets blended in with the definition of faith looks appealing , but it ultimately leads to a definition so unlike the original that it changes the meaning. Christians cannot allow false teachers and the world to define our terms. When we lose our definitions, we lose our control of the conversation. Atheistic professors, youtube personalities, and zealous social media commenters devour unsuspecting christians when they ask, “so you are saying that you believe in a god without evidence? And that's what faith is? Why don't you believe in somethingbased on evidence?

How Can We Be Angry and Not Sin?

There is a kind of anger that comes from our regenerate, Spirit-directed nature, even if it is unavoidably tainted by our indwelling sin as it passes through the defective filters of our minds and mouths. And because the Holy Spirit through David and Paul instructs us to “be angry,” it means some things must make us righteously angry.

Can You Be Too Young to Lead in Church?

This is interesting because I was called on by my church to be the Worship Leader when I was 18. I had demonstrated my ability to lead through music and to recruit the help of others in the youth ministry and the church felt because of my knowledge of the culture of our church and what I had shown already that I was plenty qualified to fill the position (even with plenty of grads from Liberty University just up the road). I'm blessed to have that opportunity that many people my age do not have, and I've been in that position for three years now.

Hiding from God

“We hide; God seeks. That’s the Bible. He’s relentless in his pursuit.”

1 Peter 3:1–6, Part 3: Beauty Is Not in Makeup or Clothing

Women have often been deceived into thinking that beauty is about how they look or what they wear — their clothing, jewelry, or hair style. But God defines beauty very differently. In this lab, John Piper introduces a distinct, supernatural, and imperishable beauty, and explains how women can pursue it.

Essential Truths for Your Everyday Work

The idea of partnering with God through your vocation may not be the way you naturally think about life. Our tendencies will always be to minimize God’s presence in our work—making everything a grind for survival or elevating our own efforts and accomplishments apart from him. In light of this, we must see that the believer’s work is a partnership with Jesus, who already achieved success on our behalf and offers mercy and grace in every struggle (Heb. 4:14–16). We need, therefore, to hold onto gospel truths to live out our vocation in this broken world. These truths include:

Transcript: The Cosmological Argument | Reasonable Faith

Reasonable Faith features the work of philosopher and theologian Dr. William Lane Craig and aims to provide in the public arena an intelligent, articulate, and uncompromising yet gracious Christian perspective on the most important issues concerning the truth of the Christian faith today, such as:

Bad Arguments Against Christianity: Cruelty in Nature

And yet, it cannot be  that designer, skeptics say, even if intelligent design were true.  For the Judeo-Christian God, being benevolent, gracious, and loving, would not design cruel monsters in nature.  Like the guinea worm that starts out microscopic in size, until it’s sucked so much life from its host that it has grown to two to three feet in size, and then burrows its way out of the skin through the blister.  Or the angler fish who lures fish to their unwitting demise by a pleasant shining light in the dark depths of the sea.  Or bottle-nosed dolphins who have been documented essentially beating porpoises to death just for the heck of it.  Who said humans were the only mammal psychopaths?

Training Days

One of the greatest objections to the existence of the Christian God is the presence of suffering and evil in the world. The question of why a loving God would allow so much suffering is common to all of us. Whether we experience what Os Guinness describes as the ‘lash’ of evil against us, or the impact of sickness or the effects of a natural disaster, the question of suffering demands an answer.

How Victims of Sexual Abuse Can Get the Better of Satan

But there’s a deeper reason that kindness feels terrifying to someone who has been abused. In a sense, kindness “arouses” the body. When someone is kind, it rings the body’s pleasure centers. But victims of abuse can struggle with a sense of guilt and complicity in the way their abusers aroused them. And in those lies, they have come to regard their bodies as dangerous or repulsive.

Should Christians be afraid of The Witch? | Think Christian

While its seeming embrace of the occult has earned The Witch an endorsement from no less an authority than The Satanic Temple, that doesn’t mean the movie should be met with irrational fear. For Christian horror-movie fans, it functions as a provocative consideration of the ways religious extremists may be particularly susceptible to the devil’s whims. When it comes to encountering evil, the family in the film veers wildly back and forth between “triumphalism” and “defeatism,” two theological extremes John Stott discusses in The Cross of Christ :

49 The case for Christianity gets better

The expiration date on religious thought is also a common talking point of the New Atheists. Laurence Krauss has said , “What we need to do is present comparative religion as a bunch of interesting historical anecdotes. And then show the silly reasons why they did what they did.” He goes on to say “Change is always one generation away. So if we can plant the seeds of doubt in our children, religion will go away in a generation, or at least largely go away — and that’s what I think we have an obligation to do.” All we have to do, according to Krauss, is to present religion as interesting but false and it goes away. Let me just say how adorable Krauss is in a New-Atheist-kind-of-way. Not only does Krauss seem to lack the first clue about why people believe in God and stand in particular religious traditions, he seems to be suggesting a form of indoctrination on a scale that would make any religious fundamentalist blush. Let’s hear it for Krauss the freethinker!

Kanye West Is Putting Out Another Album This Year (and Received a Blessing from Kirk Franklin)

If you have already gotten tired of Kanye's new album, whatever it's called this week, from listening to it on repeat with your new Tidal subscription (We know you wouldn't pirate it), you won't have to wait much longer for new tracks. Kanye just tweeted that we can all expect a new album this summer. Ye recently tweeted that he had millions of dollars debt, so it's unclear how he'll have the money to crank out a new record in four months. But the rapper apparently received a blessing from Kirk Franklin, so we guess it's OK. Just in case, though, keep an eye out for a Kickstarter campaign that will probably be called "Imma Let You Finish ... My Album."
