Someone Made a Supercut of Every Best Picture Oscar Winner Ever

The 2017 Academy Awards are coming up this weekend. And to get you ready, the internet geniuses at Burger Fiction created a supercut of every film to win the most coveted Oscar: best picture. The video starts with the first ever winner, 1927's Wings, and goes all the way up through this year's nominees. Because you have to do your homework before show starts this Sunday:

Reasons To Believe : Thoughts on Is Genesis History?

Shortly into the film, a sharp dividing line was drawn. According to the scientists, theologians, and philosophers interviewed, only two paradigms exist to view Earth’s history. Either the “historical Genesis paradigm” tells the history properly or the “conventional paradigm” (the standard scientific account) does. However, the documentary defines the latter as “deep time” (a 14 billion-year-old universe and a 4.5 billion-year-old Earth) and “all the complexity of life [constructed] by strictly physical processes,” with no intelligent design involved. In contrast, the “historical Genesis paradigm” includes an explicit statement that the universe, Earth, and its great diversity of life were created in six 24-hour days.

The Johnny Cash You Never Knew

He was born J.R Cash on February 26, 1932, and he would change his name twice. First, because the United States Air Force wouldn’t permit him to use his initials as a first name, so J.R. Cash named himself John R. Cash. He would change his name one more time when he signed with Sun Records. He created his own stage name: Johnny Cash. The man who had three names had two loves. We all know one of them, thanks to the 2005 biopic, “Walk The Line.” Her name was June — June Carter Cash. It turns out that Cash never did stop playing Gospel music. But he had another love. A higher love. One never mentioned by name in the entire movie. There are some hints and intimations in the movie. In an early scene in the film, a young Cash, played by Joaquin Phoenix, is auditioning for the man who he hopes might make him the next Elvis

Contend: A Survey of Christian Apologetics on a High School Level - Kindle edition by Jason Dollar, Bradley Pinkerton, Steven B. Cowan. Religion & Spirituality Kindle eBooks @ Amazon.com.

In Contend: A Survey of Christian Apologetics on a High School Level, Jason Dollar and Bradley Pinkerton lay out an excellent introduction to the study of Christian apologetics. This book focuses on placing the study of apologetics centered first and foremost on the glory of God and secondly driving the focus of apologetics to be evangelism. Dollar and Pinkerton do an excellent job of arguing the person of Jesus with a very well presented argument for the resurrection. Apologetics are constantly brought back to Jesus, as the living picture of God and the center of our faith. The seemingly difficult apologetic arguments are presented clearly through real life illustrations that make the presuppositions of the arguments come alive. Arguments in this volume are primarily made using scripture as the ultimate source which equips and provides students with truths directly from the Bible that they can share with their friends. Dollar and Pinkerton do an excellent job of raising objections to Christianity and responding to them in a concise and convincing manner. The authors also provide a simple survey of other worldview systems which provides an excellent introduction for further study.

To Give a Good Answer, Sometimes You Have to Change the Question | Stand to Reason

Author Rosaria Butterfield has said that you can’t give a good answer to a bad question. When confronted with direct questions about what the Bible teaches about sex, you probably need to answer a somewhat different question to give a good answer. Instead of answering the question, “What does the Bible teach about being gay?” it might be more effective to help the asker actually understand the answer if you respond to the more relevant question, “What does the Bible teach is God’s design for sex?” In that context, the answer to the question he asked will make more sense.

3 Reasons Why You Need Apologetics

Living in a secular age means living with our faith being contested. We are surrounded by people who believe and act differently from us. We must not take for granted the faith handed down by our parents. In fact, statistics show that those who merely have a faith that is passed down to them end up losing it if they never come to accept the faith’s claims for themselves. Here are three reasons apologetics is beneficial to Christians and non-Christians alike:

Jesus in the Old Testament, Part 2: Titles | Pastor Mark Driscoll

Jesus’ favorite title for himself is from the Old Testament: the Son of Man. He uses this title roughly 80 times. For example, in response to the high priest’s request for Jesus to say if he is the Christ, Jesus said, “You have said so. But I tell you, from now on you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power and coming in the clouds of heaven” (Matt. 6:64; cf. Matt. 16:27, 24:30; Mark 14:62). Jesus isn’t merely saying that he is simply a son of a man. We all are. Jesus was claiming to be the son of man as spoken of by Daniel.

Is It Reasonable to Believe in Minds Even If We Can’t Explain How They Interact with Brains?

The “interaction problem” is perhaps the largest obstacle for dualist explanations. Dualists believe the mind is completely distinct from the brain yet interacts with it in some way. But how precisely does this occur, especially given the nonmaterial nature of the mind? The laws of physics explain the causal interactions between physical objects, but how can a nonmaterial mind interact with a material brain? In response to this objection, philosophers have historically offered a variety of explanations, including “occasionalism,” “parallelism,” and “epiphenomenalism” (read God’s Crime Scene for more on these definitions).

23
The Key to Spiritual Breakthrough

Jesus also says we do not have, because we do not ask long enough (Luke 11:5–13). All over the Bible we see, not in great detail but in sufficient detail, that we are involved in a great cosmic battle and that the prayers of the saints are crucial to the advancement of the kingdom of God (see Daniel 10:12–14 and Ephesians 6:18). We don’t need to know how it all works; we just need to know it does. The testimony of Scripture and church history is that great, Spirit-empowered, Great Commission-fulfilling works of God are preceded, carried, and prolonged by the fervent, persistent, prevailing prayers of the saints. When prayer dissipates, spiritual power dissipates.

28 Renewing Your Mind | Regeneration and Repentance | Feb 24, 2017

God has commanded people everywhere to repent, but are they able to? What if we couldn't repent? Would God command us to do something that we simply couldn't do—like repent? If your answer is no, then you are in agreement with the majority of the church. But there is still a minority who believe otherwise—those who believe that God commands things that sinners cannot do. Thinking of this, Dr. R.C. Sproul will help us to understand the vital relationship regeneration has with repentance.

For Gaye Clark, Grief Is a Gracious Invitation

On how the church can end sex-trafficking: “You don’t have to be this gutsy, edgy person who would snatch a little girl from a pimp. Being a foster parent is fighting sex-trafficking. A lot of these women are running from their abusive homes to somewhere safe. What if the church got more aggressive about foster care, and more and more families said ‘Yes, we’ll take one. We’ll take two. We’ll take three’? There’d be a safe place for them to go.”

30
Three M’s That Naturalism Can’t Provide

Your whole paragraph on morality is a perfect description of how we actually do arrive at moral truth. The bible hasn’t given it to us. If the bible has any “moral truth” it is because men gave it to the bible. You believe it comes “from” the bible. It’s the other way around. The bible got it from men. The fact that the bible contains so many morally dubious passages is clear evidence that it can’t possibly be the final word on the subject. Your whole argument for “objective” moral truth boils down to, “I accept what the bible says about everything so the main character won’t torture me forever after I die.” A naturalistic worldview may not be as satisfying to you as your Christian worldview is but that doesn’t make your Christian worldview true. In fact, in your three paragraphs above, you said little more than, “I really din’t like the ramifications of my naturalistic worldview so I adopted a new one”. There are an abundance of moral dilemmas that the bible can’t even begin to address.

Why Environmentalism and Animal Rights Are Dependent on a Christian Worldview | Cold Case Christianity

Environmentalism From A Christian Perspective As a Christian, I definitely understand my responsibility to protect and steward the natural environment. This responsibility is “grounded” in God’s purpose for me as a human created in His image. Adam and Eve were given “dominion” over all creation (Genesis 1:26-28) but they clearly understood this as a responsibility to “work” and “keep” the Garden (Genesis 2:15). Dominion is not reckless power; it is careful responsibility and stewardship. By the time the nation of Israel was established, God provided a number of laws to make sure His children understood the importance of His creation and they learned to respect and care for other animals (see Leviticus 25:1-12, Deuteronomy 25:4 and Deuteronomy 22:6). My concern for the environment is an act of obedience and respect for God’s creation. Everything in nature (humans included) began as a result of God’s creative act. All this created “stuff” is important to God.

A Straightforward Way to Think about the Bible and Science

A Straightforward Way to Think about the Bible and Science by Jeff Myers The National Academy of Sciences defines science as “the use of evidence to construct testable explanation and prediction of natural phenomena, as well as the knowledge generated through this process” and holds that “scientists gather information by observing the natural world and conducting experiments.” 1 Science assumes that nature operates in a predictable, stable manner and that the results we obtain in any given case will yield similar results under similar conditions. This assumption about the orderliness and predictability of nature—indeed a great many of science’s underlying assumptions—is based on principles that early scientists believed because they believed in the God of the Bible. The Bible and Science This is not to say that the Bible is a book of science. It’s bigger than that. The Bible, as we saw in earlier chapters, presents an overarching story — a metanarrative about the world and everyone in it from the perspective of a sovereign God and his plan for the world. Though the Bible is not a book of science, it is not against science either.

1 Peter 5:8–9: Can Satan Devour Christians?

As you read the Word, remember the commandment of Jesus, reiterated by James, to be doers and not merely hearers of the Word (Matthew 7:24–27; James 1:22–25). Seldom does anyone wander into obedience. Often we must take time to not only digest what we have read, but to plan for how we can practically obey God’s will.

How Do We Make a Case for Religious Freedom?

Religious freedom is about freedom for everyone: religious believers of any and all sorts as well as those who have no religious beliefs. The most important religious freedom to protect is not the freedom of the majority, but the freedom of minority religions, unpopular religions, and religions that challenge conventional ideas. To use an example cited earlier, in 1800, the established Congregationalists in Connecticut did not need anyone to protect their religious freedom. It was the despised Baptists who needed protection. Today the law needs to protect Muslim women denied jobs in retail for wearing headscarves, [8] Sheik children wearing ceremonial daggers to school, [9] or Catholic midwives who refuse to participate in abortions. [10] Religious voices that echo the values and priorities of the prevailing culture need no protection, it is those who stand against “what everyone thinks” and force everyone to think again.

The Danger of Idolizing 'Christian Celebrities'

There are a lot of conversations today about the world around us trying to put out the fire of Christianity. In what I have seen, we are often destroying ourselves from the inside out. The watching world can sit back with a bag of popcorn and watch Christians devalue and destroy one another, until no one will be left. The way we treat one another, celebrity or not, determines the way an observing world will feel about Jesus. We need to step away from our screens and be the hands and feet of Jesus. We cannot measure the “success” of our ministry or calling based on the number of likes or followers we have on social media.

Is There Biblical Justification for Capital Punishment? | Stand to Reason

When we turn to the pages of the New Testament, we do not find much data regarding the death penalty. However, it does seem that capital punishment was assumed in the New Testament. First, we find that governing authorities may practice capital punishment. Romans 13:3–4 states that “rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil…. [I]f you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath upon the one who practices evil.” Furthermore, in Acts 25:11, the Apostle Paul addresses Festus and the tribunal: “If then I am a wrongdoer, and have committed anything worthy of death, I do not refuse to die; but if none of those things is true of which these men accuse me, no one can hand me over to them. I appeal to Caesar.” In these passages, it seems that the State is justified in using the death penalty to keep order.
