Nikolas Cruz’s Lifetime of Trouble: Family Loss, Flashes of Rage

He spent much of it in a subdivision called Pine Tree Estates, on a lush, narrow street dotted with tropical plants and the occasional driveway basketball hoop. Mr. Cruz and his brother, Zachary, had been adopted, and were raised largely by their mother, Lynda Cruz, especially after their father, Roger P. Cruz, died suddenly in 2004 at the age of 67. Ms. Cruz died in November, and people who knew Nikolas said he had taken the loss hard.

Apologetics Leads to True Worship

Apologetics and worship? Aren’t those mutually exclusive? Christian apologetics, the reasoned defense of the faith, is often seen as rather dry and clinical – a very cold, sterile niche of Christianity set aside for those kinda weird nerds or those that are a little more quarrelsome than they should be. Meanwhile, worship is of the heart, not the head, right? Well, this nerd begs to differ. Worship is certainly more than feelings. I would dare say that many mistake the beat of a good tune for the moving of the Spirit of God, but I digress….

Christian Parents and Schools Have 529 Reasons to Like New Tax Law

Parents create and put money into a 529 account, which is then invested in stocks and bonds, more like a 403(b) or a 401(k) than a bank savings account. They can select their level of risk: perhaps choosing a plan that invests in higher-risk options with higher rates of return for a child in first grade, then switching to safer options such as bonds as a child gets closer to college.

Hummingbird Study Illustrates Problem with Darwinian Explanations | Evolution News

The paper by Dakin et al., notice, is trying to explain hummingbird differences by evolution. Peter C. Wainright, in a companion piece in Science , points to the paper with the “how” word: “ How hummingbirds stay nimble on the wing.” He says the authors “probe the evolution of flight maneuverability in hummingbirds”; he speaks of “the evolution ” of hummingbirds; he mentions “the role of flight ability evolution in hummingbird diversification.” Our contention is, what’s the e-word got to do with it? For anything learned about hummingbird maneuverability due to wing shape, tail rotation, or muscle mass, does it help to say that evolution (happenstance) did it? Does this improve scientific understanding of a wonder of nature? Thinking people want to know how this wonder came about. Happenstance is not an answer. It is not an explanation.

UPDATE ON SES BUILDING SALE AND RELOCATION

Dear SES Family, You are most likely aware, but if not, I’m happy to share that SES has entered into a contract to sell our current campus to Union Day Charter School and to relocate to another campus in the Charlotte area. Currently we are scheduled to close the sale on February 28. We have given permission for Union Day to put up a banner on our campus announcing that our current campus will be their new home beginning on August 1, 2018. They have the Tilley Morris Road location as their new home for the fall semester on their website and in full-page ads in the Union County newspaper. They are excited to move in and are actively recruiting students for the next school year. If all goes according to plan, after the 28th of February, we will be leasing back from Union Day and will be in the process of moving to our new location (soon to be determined by our trustees) after graduation (May 5) and over the summer. We will be completely moved from our current campus by July 31. This is an exciting transition for SES and will equip us to reach even more students and to equip them to even more ably defend the faith.

Education or Obfuscation? Avida in Science Class | Evolution News

[I]t can be difficult to engage students in authentic scientific practice around the topic of evolution, mainly because biological evolution can be difficult to observe. An option that overcomes limitations posed by biological model organisms is digital evolution. Populations of digital organisms — mini-programs similar to computer viruses capable of self-replication — evolve in minutes and can produce large quantities of data in a short time. An example of digital evolution software is Avida, a research platform that was developed to model and test hypotheses about evolutionary mechanisms in a highly controlled and fast system. Avida allows biologists to investigate evolutionary questions that are difficult or impossible to test in organic systems (Adami, 2006), and has been used as a model system in well over a hundred experimental evolution studies for many kinds of evolutionary hypotheses (e.g., Clune et al., 2010; Grabowski etal., 2013).

The Reasonable Expectations That Cause Mythologies to Resemble Jesus

While the similarities between Jesus and the “divine” mythological characters that preceded him are grossly overstated , we ought to expect some parallels between Jesus and the imaginative creations of those who lived prior to Christ’s appearance on earth. As ancient people began to consider the possibility of God’s existence, a series of reasonable inferences certainly must have guided the fabrication of their mythological deities. Consider the following reasonable conclusions one might draw when thinking about the possible existence of God:

Did Early Christians Believe the Bible was Inspired, Inerrant, and Authoritative?

I read books I agree with.... books I don't agree with....books that are a bit over my head....books on subjects I'm interested in....books on subjects I'm not particularly interested in....and books that are just mindlessly entertaining. Why Make the Case for Christianity, If God Is in Control?

I’ve written a Christian apologetics book that makes the case for making the case . I argue that Christians ought to embrace a more evidential, thoughtful faith and accept their duty to become Christian case-makers. Many people, after reading the book and thinking about this call to become better case makers, have asked, “If God calls His chosen, can’t He achieve this without any case-making effort on our part?” I also pondered this question as a new Christian, and I think the following analogy is helpful, although certainly imperfect.

CNN Claims Pro-Life Senator Ted Cruz is Afraid of It, His Response is Priceless | LifeNews.com

Although it was a bold response, we don’t need a tweet to know that Cruz is unafraid to tell the media exactly what’s on his mind. Who can forget his epic takedown of the CNBC moderators in the middle of a presidential debate? Sensing a pattern during the October 2015 debate, Cruz laid into the moderators for their biased interrogation of the candidates. Why were they painting Donald Trump as a villain, questioning Ben Carson’s math skills, and suggesting Marco Rubio resign from the Senate, Cruz demanded to know.

The Sixth Characteristic of a Healthy Church: A Response That Overflows with Joy | Cold Case Christianity

The Church needs to be careful to resist our inclination to focus on ourselves . We need to be committed to a new life centered on God’s moral will and the gifts He has already given us. We need to be wise stewards of these gifts and make God the focus of our lives. Like the early believers, singing should be an important part of our lives. We ought to sing not so we can be “ushered into God’s presence” (we know we are already there), but in spontaneous response to what he has done for us. Our songs shouldn’t be the limit of our worship, but the spontaneous result of our focus. We should sing, because we cannot help but sing.

Mental Health and the Church: An Interview with Stephen Grcevich, MD

Mental health-related disabilities are different in that persons with those conditions are often disabled some, but not all of the time, and in some, but not all environments and activities. Mental health disability is often episodic. Someone with recurrent depression may be a regular attender at church or Bible study but disappear for weeks or months at a time during a mood episode. The disability is often hidden. Someone with agoraphobia may turn around and leave church shortly after arriving if there are no open seats near a door allowing for a discrete exit if labored breathing or palpitations occur during the worship service. The man with a mental health condition associated with sensory processing difficulties may be fine at a small group, but unable to handle a contemporary worship service when the band turns their amplifiers on high. Mental health disability may be situation-specific. Someone with social anxiety may be quite successful in their work or studies but find themselves incapacitated by fear at the prospect of visiting a church for the first time. The middle schooler with separation anxiety may sit with his parents at worship every Sunday, but overnight retreats or mission trips are out of the question.

How can I start defending my faith? Podcast interview with Dr. Craig Hazen | Apologetics.com

If you are reading this blog, then I suspect you realize how important it is for Christians to defend their faith. We live in a culture that is putting forth ideas that are contrary to Christianity, and we have people that are demanding for Christians to give reasons as to why they believe what they believe. These questions or issues may have driven you to study apologetics and the defense of your faith. I am excited to know that there are some of you who read this and fall into that category. However, the problem is that not everyone understands this need.

3 Startling Truths about the Early Church from the Pre-New Testament Texts

Throughout the New Testament, one will find early creeds, formulations, and hymns that predate the New Testament itself. These texts are often called “proto-New Testament texts.” Proto-New Testament texts date back to the earliest church from those who were eyewitnesses of Jesus himself. 1 Corinthians 15:3-8 is perhaps the most popular of the proto-New Testament texts as it bears heavily on the post-resurrection appearances of Jesus. Concerning 1 Corinthians 15:3-8, Roy Ciampa and Brian Rosner write,
