Scientists Detect Gravitational Waves, Confirming Einstein’s Prediction

Scientists have just confirmed one of Einstein’s most important theories. Using the high-tech, billion-dollar “Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory,” the team of astronomers and researchers were able to detect actual gravitational waves for the first time ever. Einstein theorized that ripples could be created in the fabric of space-time, and with the new detection technology, the researchers were able to observe one of these waves caused when two black holes—more than a billion light-years from earth—smashed into each other. Sure, it might sound a little confusing, but it’s a really big deal for potentially learning more about the universe. As Columbia University astrophysicist Szabolcs Marka explained to the AP, "Until this moment, we had our eyes on the sky and we couldn't hear the music. The skies will never be the same." Here's a cool, quick primer from Science magazine:

Meet The Punisher and Elektra in This Trailer for ‘Daredevil’ Season 2

Netflix and Marvel have released a trailer for the upcoming second season of its hit, hard-edged, comic book adaptation of Daredevil. Along with another glimpse at Daredevil’s increasingly conflicted Christian faith (“Father, why do I still feel guilty?” he asks his priest), audiences also get their first looks at Marvel characters The Punisher and Elektra, who star in the new season, which drops March 18.

2 Grace to You

God’s power also gives us spiritual victory. Paul instructs us to “be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might” (Eph. 6:10). When the adversary comes and you’re on guard, you don’t fight him; you go tell the commander, and he leads the battle. God will bring about the victory because “greater is He who is in [us] than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4). Satan may be powerful, but he’s no match for God.

3 Grace to You Radio

With people’s thoughts turning to Valentine’s Day this month, it’s a good time to examine true, biblical love, and how to apply it to all your relationships. John MacArthur helps with that in his study The Greatest of These .

Love the Life You Never Wanted

The reality is that all of us can imagine something better for ourselves than our circumstances today. The greater reality is that, if you love and follow Jesus, God always writes a better story for you than you would write for yourself. The “better” is based on this: God himself is the best, most satisfying thing you could ever have or experience, and, therefore, fullness of life is ultimately found not in any earthly success or relationship or accomplishment, but in your proximity to God through faith.

Seven Questions to Ask Before You Watch ‘Deadpool’

On social media, Christians are debating whether or not it’s appropriate to see the film. Is it permissible? Is it wise? Is it legalistic to say no? What follows is a lightly edited transcript from John Piper on why he is committed to abstaining from movies and shows he knows contain nudity. We’ve cast them in terms of seven questions to consider.

New Study Shows Church-Going Couples Are Happier

"New study shows Church-Going Couples Are Happier" when you read the study that is NOT what it shows. 67% of the couples who were non religious and/or had no church attendance reported to be very happy with their relationship. 78% of couple that reported attending services together regularly reported to be very happy, 59% of couples where only the woman goes to church report as very happy. This does not mean that this becomes the truth of all relationships. The study was based on 1600 people's answers of a survey, so the data is true of them. Also to note, when this study was first published by an unbiased group the researchers found there was no correlation between couple happiness and church attendance. When the data was broken down further by a BIASED group there was a small change in the correlation. The study does not show the reasons why and even the biased group still do not know why the data looks the way it does and the findings need more research. Also it is important to note that all relationships could be happy or unhappy according to the data of the study many people who stated that they are dissatisfied with their relationship also said they regularly attend church together or pray together.

8 Grace to You

The completion of God's work in you will come at a future point in time that Paul calls "the day of Christ Jesus" (Phil. 1:6). Scripture also speaks of "the day of the Lord," which is the time of God's judgment on unbelievers, but "the day of Christ Jesus" refers to when believers will be fully glorified then rewarded for their faithful service (cf. 1 Cor. 3:10-15). All your earthly cares will be gone and God's promise to keep you from stumbling and make you stand in His presence blameless with great joy will be fully realized (Jude 24).

6 Advantages of Consecutive Expository Preaching

Perhaps that is why it is so rare. Only those will undertake it who are prepared to follow the example of the apostles and say, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the Word of God and serve tables…. We will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the Word” (Acts 6:2, 4). The systematic preaching of the Word is impossible without the systematic study of it. It will not be enough to skim through a few verses in daily Bible reading, nor to study a passage only when we have to preach from it. No. We must daily soak ourselves in the Scriptures. We must not just study, as through a microscope, the linguistic minutiae of a few verses, but take out our telescope and scan the wide expanses of God’s Word, assimilating its grand theme of divine sovereignty in the redemption of mankind. “It is blessed,” wrote C. H. Spurgeon, “to eat into the very soul of the Bible until, at last, you come to talk in Scriptural language, and your spirit is flavoured with the words of the Lord, so that your blood is Bibline and the very essence of the Bible flows from you.

Do Christian Parents Flirt with the Idol of Safety?

The tough pill for parents to swallow remains that, just as God’s love for our kids comes with no strings attached, his lordship over their lives comes without conditions too. That the Father offered his Son as a ransom for our children and us means they belong to him, not us. The full benefits of salvation come with the full commitment of discipleship.

5 Lessons for Apologetics Today

RTB is to be commended for so intentionally incorporating these principles (and more) into the AMP Conference. For the sake of the next generation, we need a continued renewal of apologetics in the church. But we can’t do apologetics the way we have always done it in the past. My hat is off to RTB, and I hope this is merely a sign of more good things to come from them and the church as a whole.

Our Pro-Woman, Complementarian Jesus

In summary, Jesus honored women and empowered them for ministry, but when it came to selecting those for positions of leadership and authority, he chose only men. Our Lord had no trouble being radically pro-women and unequivocally complementarian at the same time. Neither should we.

Does Your Church’s Worship Need a Multicultural Makeover?

Second, you need to know why you’re considering change. For what purpose should your worship be more diverse? Because you’ve merged with another church? Because your neighborhood is changing, and you want to show neighbors that they are welcome? Because you want to show solidarity with Syrian refugees or other branches of the global church? Whatever the reason, it’s important to cultivate a sense of mutuality. We want to communicate not only that we stand with you, but also that we need you, that we’re not complete without you.

Kirk Franklin Defends Collaboration with Kanye; Closes ‘Saturday Night Live’ Performance with Prayer

Kanye is not me. I am not him. He is my brother I am proud to do life with. No sprints, but Marathons; like most of us are on. Before one song was released, I was crucified because my brother asked me to take a picture. Again "no Kanye, you're not good enough"? No. That is a dangerous message I believe we send to the world when our posture is they have to meet certain requirements before they are worthy to kiss the ring. It says people are not redeemable, forgivable or candidates for grace. That my friend is religious. I will not turn my back on my brother. I will love him, prayerfully grow with him. However long he'll have me, and however long the race takes. To a lot of my Christian family, I'm sorry he's not good enough, Christian enough, or running at your pace...and as I read some of your comments, neither am I. That won't stop me from running. Pray we win.

Cognitive Dissonance and the Followers of Donald Trump

There is something about Arum's line that reminds me of Donald Trump, except that: 1) Arum was not running for the office of the president of the United States; and 2) Trump could say the same thing that Arum did but it appears that many of his followers would say, "You see! Valentine’s Is About Jesus

When we elevate romance in our celebrations of Saint Valentine’s Day, we are doing more than supporting the manufacture of all things kitsch. We are appropriating an entirely unnecessary and entirely wonderful event in order to take our place in a tradition of romance and courtly love that points squarely to our Lord.

24 Does Your Pastor Love Being a Pastor?

If you look around and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of payoff here, lift up your eyes. And if you have been taught by some psychologist or ethicist that you shouldn’t live for reward, close their book and read the Bible. This is a glorious promise to faithful pastors in hard situations. It is meant to motivate you in the ministry. It is meant to produce perseverance. It is meant to produce eagerness. It is meant to produce willingness. It is meant to produce on the ground, in the trenches, exemplary life.

God Loved Alexander Hamilton

That God loved Alexander Hamilton is undeniable. But did Hamilton love God? Historians of the Revolutionary period are often asked about issues of faith. Did the Founding Fathers believe in God? Were they really Christians? For Alexander Hamilton, the answer was yes. Records indicate that Hugh Knox, a Presbyterian minister in St. Croix, influenced Hamilton at a young age. Knox’s sermons and passion for God seemed to have affected Hamilton on a fundamentally core level. Hamilton’s own desire to pursue godly living was ignited in St. Croix, and he carried this aspiration with him when he set sail for New York to further his education.

John Rankin Blog

Though Muhammad guarantees the “religion and property” of the Jews in the Treaty of Medina, he still warns them of Allah’s “punishment and vengeance” if they fail to convert. He enters a Jewish school accordingly, and the rabbis challenge him: “ ‘What is your religion, Muhammad?’ “ ‘The religion of Abraham’ [says Muhammad]. “ ‘But Abraham was a Jew’ [say the Jews]. “ ‘Then let the Torah judge between us’ ” [says Muhammad]. As the rabbis then refuse to convert, Muhammad declares a verse of the Qur’an coming down from Allah: “Hast thou not seen how those who have received a portion of scripture when invited to [Allah’s] book that it may judge between them, a party of them turn their backs in opposition.” The Jews claim Abraham as their own, with their Judaism tracing back through to the Israelites and Isaac. But here Muhammad challenges them to prove it from the Torah (the Pentateuch), and also, he includes the Torah in Allah’s book.

Why I Know the Disciples Didn’t Conspire to Fabricate the Resurrection of Jesus | Cold Case Christianity

How do we know the resurrection of Jesus really occurred ? Were the gospel authors and disciples telling the truth about this central claim of Christianity, or did they conspire to fabricate the most compelling story of all time? Is the Resurrection simply a lie? In my experience as a detective, I have investigated many conspiracies and multiple suspect crimes. While successful conspiracies are the popular subject of many movies and novels, I’ve come to learn that they are (in reality) very difficult to pull off. Successful conspiracies share a number of common characteristics:

Precision with God’s Words, Love for God’s Glory

What marks a person as true, and not false, is his devotion to the glory of God. Jesus is so submitted to the glory of his Father that he is willing to lose his life for it (John 12:27–28). He is so little devoted to his own earthly comfort and security and fame, and so fully devoted to his Father’s glory that his teaching shines with a kind of wonder unlike anything merely human.

Gay marriage, transgender and sexual identity issues, the ethics of abortion, the question of whether Muslims and Christians worship the same God—this is just a smattering of the major issues currently dividing the United States. Obviously, strong disagreement is unavoidable when we discuss these topics. But these issues are too important to ignore; we need to talk about them. But many of us are afraid to talk about them. In this podcast, we’ll explore a vital need, namely, the recovery of civil disagreement.

A Giant has Fallen — The Death of Justice Antonin Scalia and the Future of Constitutional Government | AlbertMohler.com

“The American people have been converted to belief in The Living Constitution, a ‘morphing” document that means, from age to age, what is ought to mean. And with that conversion has inevitably come the new phenomenon of electing and confirming federal judges, at all levels, on the basis of their views concerning a whole series of proposals for constitutional evolution. If the courts are free to write the Constitution anew, they will, by God, write it the way the majority wants; the appointment and confirmation process will see to that. This, of course, is the end of the Bill of Rights, whose meaning will be committed to the very body it was meant to protect against: the majority. By trying to make the Constitution do everything that needs to be done from age to age, we shall have caused it to do nothing at all.”

What Does the Bible Actually Say About Dating?

Though the Bible doesn’t talk directly about dating, it does speak volumes about relationships, godly interactions and principles that can be applied to how you date. 1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us that no matter what it is we’re doing; it can be used as a means to glorify God. When it comes to dating, I think we could all benefit from relaxing a bit about searching for hard and fast rules, and learning to apply Godly wisdom to every single part of our lives.

Sin, evil and the Zika virus | Think Christian

The Zika virus has also been known for decades as a pathogen in the tropics of Africa. There has been some research on how it is transmitted and how the disease progresses in a victim, but the virus was not a major concern for epidemiological organizations like WHO or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Western society has acted like the virus would stay “over there.” But evil has no regard for borders. In the globalized era, it is only a matter of time until a virus spreads to every corner of the world in which it can thrive. And there were signs the virus was spreading. In 2013 there was a Zika outbreak with birth defects in French Polynesia , but it was a small outbreak, in a small country, among small babies. The world did not pay much attention. We make things worse because of a failure to care for our neighbors.

37 Marco Rubio co-sponsored a bill to give 20 million illegal immigrants a path to citizenship

I hope all the Marco Rubio voters will see this post and engage with the details of this man’s record. He swore up and down during the 2010 election that he was opposed to amnesty, then he went to Washington and led the push for amnesty. You can’t trust this man on anything… I would not even say he is pro-life. He says he is pro-life, but then he told Florida voters that he was not pro-amnesty. If he betrays his supporters on amnesty, then he could easily betray them on defending the unborn, as well. The point is that he says one thing while campaigning and then leads the fight to do the exact opposite once elected. This was not done in a corner, folks.

2 Timothy 2:8–13: Saved by Grace, But Not Without War

Nobody who has been saved by Jesus will ever lose their salvation. That truth has wrongly led many to relax and live passively. There’s a war still being waged for your soul, and you must fight to make it to glory. In this lab, John Piper teaches us how to love each other until the end.

Joseph Fiennes Talks About Playing a Skeptic in ‘Risen’

Joseph Fiennes: I met with our director, Kevin [Reynolds]. He is extremely intelligent—I loved his films and identify a lot with them. He had established a pretty brilliant pitch, which was really getting into the story of Christ through the eyes of an agnostic. I thought that was a brilliant, original approach. It also appealed to me that it was like a detective story as well. There's this ticking clock to prove that the resurrection is a hoax and designed to bring about the uprising. Clavius is against it, and I love that sense of pressure.

On My Shelf: Life and Books with Marvin Olasky

At an abstract level I’m interested in people generally because God made humans the apex of creation on the sixth day. I usually do the interviews in front of college students trying to discern what to do with their lives, so it’s always fascinating to see how people discover God-given callings, often in circuitous ways. (“Man proposes, but God disposes.”) Just about everyone has individual surprises, but one common thread is concern about their children: some follow parents’ spiritual paths, some don’t, and environmental influences don’t seem determinative.

Preaching to a Persecuted People: The Pastor as Leader, Comforter, and Guide

Pastors, this is our aim. For ourselves and for our people. This is the work of a lifetime. This is a humanly impossible work. It is a glorious work. In the midst of suffering to lead your flock into this joy . . . “not under compulsion, but willingly; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock” (1 Peter 5:2–3). In the new America that is less hospitable to our faith, a stage is being set as never before in our land for the display of the glory of God through the joy of his grieving people.

Building a case for the historical Jesus

When I wrote my first book (co-authored with Stanley Porter) just over ten years ago, my friends were very excited. The first question was always on what the book was about. When I explained that the book presented the evidence for the historical existence of Jesus, their expressions became confused. Writing a book showing that Jesus actually lived was as relevant as writing a book that the Earth was round. Everyone already knows that.

As a Lutheran, a podcast I frequently enjoy is “Issues, Etc.” It continually offers a Lutheran perspective on current events, theological issues, and more. However, there are times where its approach to theology or current events reflects less a Lutheran understanding than a specific brand of theological conservatism. The recent podcast (2/11/16) featured Pastor Hans Fiene discussing “ Women in Combat and Selective Service .” I found it to be deeply mistaken on a number of issues, and would like to address just a few of those here.

47 The Briefing 02-16-16 | AlbertMohler.com

It’s Christians who understand what’s at stake here when the secular world around us might deny the obvious. Here you have a man, albeit a public man, a very well-known man, a man whose attacks upon Christianity have been legion and have been vehement, but here’s a man who has suffered a stroke and he has a family who love him, and the issue here for Christians is to understand that it is never wrong to pray for someone. But there’s something else to keep here in mind, and that is for Christians, even as we pray for people, we must not pray only for their physical well-being. The church’s concern for Richard Dawkins has to extend beyond his recovery from the stroke. The concern for Richard Dawkins and for every other must be that we are concerned that they come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. The biggest issue for Richard Dawkins is actually not his stroke, but his atheism. The real issue here is actually not physiological, it’s theological. We understand that the most basic need of every single human being is peace with God the Father, and that is accomplished through the atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Fight for Joy on Valentine’s Day

Valentine's Day is hard for many single people. The cynical humor of the typical Christian single offers little more than a thin veneer over the pain and worry lurking within his heart. Cultural pressures to find his worth, identity, and security in a romantic relationship only exacerbate the inner struggle. And those pressures are often amplified in conservative Christian communities, as singles become collateral damage in the battle to defend marriage and the family. To many married believers, the singles in their midst are pitiable at best, dangerous at worst. But in the face of all these worries and pressures, Christian singles can lay hold of some glorious biblical truths to propel them in their fight for joy this Valentine's Day—and every day thereafter.
