Matthew West Speaks of God's Grace at National Prayer Breakfast, 'Importance of Praying for Leaders'

West said the experience showed him the importance of praying for the nation's leaders. He was invited to the breakfast by Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Ill., who met the four-time Grammy nominated artist after he performed at the opening of the Museum of the Bible in November. The Prayer Breakfast, held at the Washington Hilton, celebrated its 66th year with over 3,500 people in attendance.

Psalm 133:1: Unity Is the Church’s Perfume

The church is crowned with love, clothed in Christ’s righteousness, and perfumed with Trinitarian unity.

Extraordinary Claims and Extraordinary Evidence

At first this statement may sound reasonable. For instance, I am more likely to believe you if you tell me you had breakfast this morning than I would believe you if you told me that you levitated off the ground this morning without anything holding you up. But does the fact that I believe you if you say you did something ordinary and I don't believe you if you say you did something extraordinary support the statement that "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence?" Actually, it doesn't. Although I may believe that you ate breakfast this morning, I must obtain supporting evidence if I want to actually determine whether or not that fact is true. If you have cleaned up your kitchen, such evidence may be hard to find. I might have to pump out the contents of your stomach, for instance to see what you ate and when you ate it. It is one thing to say that I believe you ate breakfast because it is an "ordinary" event, but it is quite another to actually find enough evidence to validate your claim. My point is that actual validation of any event requires sufficient evidence. It seems to me there are two major categories of "extraordinary" claims that need to be considered.

What is the Key to Discovering Truth?

Others think that each person has their own truth. I saw an advertisement this past summer at UC Berkeley for voice lessons which give “vocal techniques to ‘free the natural voice,’ combined with gentle spiritual exercises empower you to SPEAK YOUR TRUTH” (emphasis theirs). This has become a popular phrase in our culture and was even used by Oprah Winfrey at the Golden Globes when she said, “What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have” (emphasis mine).

Pastors Need Friends Too

But God didn’t create us to live only in relationship with him. He created us to also live in community with others. That larger community is found in the local church, which the pastor leads. And this leadership can often seem isolating; it’s really tough to be both a friend and a leader. This leaves the pastor with a relational need — a relational need that is too great for a wife to carry by herself.

Argument for the Early Dating of Christian Theology and Christian Writings

Two accusations by skeptics regarding the Christian faith are that the miraculous aspects of the life of Jesus were invented late and that the written accounts we now have in the Bible were also written later than the lifetimes of the supposed authors. It is reasonable to conclude that neither of these accusations are true. The theology that Jesus died for our sins and then rose from the dead is present in the Christian community within 4 years and written down within 17 years of the death of Jesus. Starting with two epistles written by Paul we can date the doctrine of the resurrection to very soon after of the crucifixion of Jesus. It is the overwhelming conclusion by ancient historians – even Christian skeptics - that Paul did actually write these letters. 1 st Corinthians was written by Paul around 53 AD, while Galatians was written sometime before 57 AD. The dating of Jesus’s death is debated, but it is either 30 AD or 33 AD. Using Paul’s writings, the logic goes as follows:[1]

3 Reasons To Integrate Apologetics Into Youth Ministry

Several years ago I began to notice a trend in many of my graduates. They knew the facts of Christianity but lacked confidence and conviction. They knew who Jesus was, what he did, and even what it meant, but denied his claim to be The Truth. They liked the idea of Jesus and some of the moral standards that come with Christianity but refused to offer their lives up as living sacrifices. In short, they knew what they ought to believe in, but they didn't know why. So I began to ask my students some important questions. One, in particular, was, "Why do you believe, what you believe?" Most had no answer. The more I asked, the more I began to see this general attitude among students to be truer than I had hoped it was. But does it really come as a surprise?

Book Review: Why The Universe Is The Way It Is

Introduction Why The Universe Is The Way It Is,  ( hardcover , Kindle ) was written by astronomer Dr. Hugh Ross ( Reasons to Believe ) a few years ago to address several common questions that he receives from atheists and Christians when he presents his case for the existence of God. The book is 240 pages, divided into thirteen chapters, five appendices, and an index. Dr. Ross recorded a podcast describing the material of each chapter. A link will be provided at the end of each chapter's summary of this review. Dr. Ross also has a lecture and a Q&A session on YouTube. But before I get to my chapter-by-chapter review, here is Dr. Ross in his own words about his purpose for writing the book: Why The Universe Is The Way It Is from RTB: MEDIA on Vimeo. Chapter 1: Why Ask Questions? Dr. Ross begins this book by exploring the reasons that people ask "why" questions. He makes the distinction between "how" questions and "why" questions- the first being a curiosity of function and the second being a curiosity of purpose and meaning. He discusses his early childhood curiosity about the function of the cosmos that led him to test the accuracy of the world's religious texts.

The Apostles Wrote the Gospels as Eyewitness Accounts | Cold Case Christianity

When you write a book seeking to evaluate the Gospels as eyewitness accounts, you shouldn’t be surprised to find some critics will attack the premise that the Gospels are eyewitness accounts in the first place. Several skeptics have either emailed me or posted comments questioning whether or not the Gospels are truly eyewitness accounts. After all, the accounts are not written as first-person narratives, and there are no direct statements in the Gospels suggesting they were written by people at the scene. Luke, for example, slips into first-person narrative for portions of his account in the Book of Acts, why don’t the other Gospel authors do something similar when writing their own “eyewitness accounts”? Why don’t these authors simply identify themselves more directly so we can understand their specific role as eyewitnesses? It’s certainly true the authors of the Gospels take a reserved and humble approach to their own identity within the narrative, and this is not uncommon in ancient literature of the time. But there are several good reasons to believe the Gospel

One of my first dates with Leah was a rafting trip on the Nolichucky River back in the summer of 2012. Then I might talk about how I enjoyed the drive home with her afterward, talking about everything and nothing in particular.

What Are the Most Important Questions?

Since God wants us to know him, honor him, trust him, obey him, love him, and live with him forever, how are you doing? How have you grown in your knowledge of him? How often do you honor the Lord and give him thanks? Do you find comfort in his faithfulness? Is your life characterized by obedience to God’s Word? Are you trusting in Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection for the forgiveness of your sins? Do you draw near to him and desire him? All praise to God that he never changes and that he is near to those who call upon him in faith. Draw near to God today and forever grow in your enjoyment of him.

Why Francis Schaeffer Matters: The Church in Culture

Francis Schaeffer’s view of the church in modern culture is multifaceted yet cuts straight to the point.  He does not mince words or play clever evangelical games.  He believes one major problem with Christians is that they see things in bits and pieces.  They have failed to see that modern man’s despair has come to fruition because of a shift in worldview.  He contends that Christians should begin to think in terms of the big picture.  They should have a view of spiritual reality that is authentic and covers all areas of life.  Indeed, the Lordship of Christ covers all life and all life equally.

Five Tips for Bible Memory

You can memorize whole books , or whole chapters (Romans 8 is a great starting point, or Philippians 3) or big chunks , or key sections. My preference over the years has become key sections (say four to seven verses, like Titus 3:1–7) that I come across as I’m moving through a Bible-reading plan. It’s often a section I find so densely rich that meditating on it for just a few minutes feels woefully inadequate. To enjoy more of its goodness, I need to put it to memory. (If you’re looking to get started on a few key sections to memorize, try Colossians 1:15–20, John 1:1–14, Hebrews 1:1–4, Philippians 2:5–11, or these short lists of “ gospel passages ” and “ gospel verses .”)

Review: Nuraphones are the best headphones any of us have ever heard

The last month has thus been a real musical journey for me. With my eyes closed, I can picture what Whitney Houston is doing with her body to get her unique vocal sound. I can see the shape and depth of Simon Phillips' giant set of rack toms as he six-arms his way through a drum fill, the whole kit reverberating in sympathy with each hit. I can identify Steve Vai's reverb settings on each guitar part as they echo and bounce around the stereo space. A powerful bass voice like on Club For Five's "Brothers in Arms" cover feels like it's shaking your very chest. The spaciousness of the sound and stereo imaging make it incredibly rewarding to seek out great recordings and dive in with the lights off.

How to care about social justice (without losing the gospel) – Russell Moore – Southern Equip

We do not, though, counteract legalism in the realm of personal morality with an antinomianism. And we do not react to the persistent “social gospels” (of both Left and Right) by pretending that Jesus does not call his churches to act on behalf of the poor, the sojourner, the fatherless, the vulnerable, the hungry, the sex-trafficked, the unborn. We act in the framework of the gospel, never apart from it, either in verbal proclamation or in active demonstration.

I’ve Already Wasted My Life — Now What?

A listener named Bruce writes in: “Dear Pastor John, I haven’t read your book, Don’t Waste Your Life. The title is convicting enough. The fact is that I have already wasted it; or at least it feels that way. For decades I tried a variety of different ‘careers.’ None of them worked. I tried starting my own business for over 20 years while my wife worked. I earned a PhD, moved to a country where I didn’t speak the language (for my wife’s job) and had a breakdown. Several years later, my wife and I separated. I’m now 64, I live in a small mobile home, and I do work that any 18-year-old could do (those are my boss’s words). The company is good to me, my boss is a Christian, and I can earn a living; but each day feels like nothing more than an exercise in waking up in the morning, getting through the day, and going to bed at night. What advice can you give to someone who has already wasted his life?”
