WORLD | A city in turmoil | Emily Belz | Dec. 4, 2014

Rich Perez, the pastor of Christ Crucified Fellowship in New York’s Washington Heights tweeted, “To all my African-American brothers and sisters, we are here and we stand with you.” Christ Crucified plans to host prayer gatherings at homes around the city on Thursday, saying in its invitation to prayer, “As the church, we have the responsibility to be a voice for the oppressed; for those subjugated by standards that do not offer equity of life, dignity and honor. The truth is that the news we herald is for both the oppressed and the oppressor.”

The Incredible Shrinking Incomes of Young Americans

Your second question might be: Why have health-care wages been the exception to the rule? One answer is that health care is, generally speaking, the exception to many rules. Demand for medical services is dominated by the government (i.e. Medicare, Medicaid, and the employer insurance tax break), which doesn't face the same vertiginous up-and-downs as the rest of the economy. So as the Great Recession steamrolled many industries, health care, propped up by sturdy government spending, kept adding workers. What's more, computerization and information technology have yet to work their magical price-cutting power in health care as they have in other industries, for a variety of reasons . Americans are spending four percent less on food away from home than in 2007; but we're spending 42 percent more on health insurance . As prices have increased, so have wages for younger workers in the medical field. ( Update : Some readers have made the smart suggestion that money which might have gone to higher salaries has instead gone to paying higher health insurance costs.)

Is the mark of the Beast a microchip? In October 2004 the Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of a microchip implantable under the skin of humans for medical identification. Paranoid prophecy pundits immediately began touting Verichip technology as the mark of the Beast spoken of in Revelation 13. Contrary to such newspaper eschatology, […]

After 90-Year-Old Hero’s Arrest, Florida Judge Makes Feeding Homeless Not a Crime

Y ou may remember the story of Arnold Abbott, a proud, 90-year-old WWII veteran who embodies what the greatest generation is all about. For years, he’s help run a non-profit organization that is dedicated to feeding Fort Lauderdale’s homeless community. After Abbott was arrested following his refusal to obey the dramatic order to “Drop that plate right now” from police, the city’s new ordinance, which prohibits feeding the homeless, became national news.

Justice for Black Lives Must Begin With Us (Part 2)

I had a long conversation with my dad maybe an hour ago. He was involved in the other civil rights movement. He was a Black Panther. One thing he said was, “Justice is a long haul. These things don’t happen overnight. And you’ve got to remember that it may not be you that’s going to carry the torch across the finish line. But every show you do, there’s somebody in the audience that going to be able to take this torch a step further. Always think long haul.” And that, for me, was like, there’s hope.

INVESTIGATION: Lena Dunham ‘Raped by a Republican’ Story in Bestseller Collapses Under Scrutiny

In her just-released memoir, Not That Kind of Girl , Lena Dunham describes her alma mater, Oberlin College, as "a liberal arts haven in the cornfields of Ohio." After a month-long investigation that included more than a dozen interviews, a trip to the Oberlin campus, and hours spent poring through the Oberlin College archives, her description of the campus remains the only detail Breitbart News was able to verify in Dunham's story of being raped by a campus Republican named Barry.

Michael Lindsay on Covenant and Conflict at Gordon College

After the letter to Obama became public, the Massachusetts cities of Salem and Lynn severed ties with Gordon. Lindsay was subject to extensive criticism, including from Gordon alumni. The college’s accrediting association began asking questions about its ban just as Gordon launched a new campus-based working group to hold dialogue on its policy. Lindsay spoke recently with Timothy C. Morgan, CT senior editor of global journalism, about the working group, how Gordon responds to LGBT students, and leading in the crux of crisis.

Jesus Changes Everything

Podcasts like “The Briefing” by Al Mohler and “Let My People Think” by Ravi Zacharias play important roles in the life of the believer— instructing us on how we should think about this world and current events with a distinctly Christian worldview. Jesus Changes Everything is a welcome addition to this genre. Dr. Sproul Jr. has a masterful way of helping people think through theological concepts and the implications of our actions and the actions of others on the commands we have been given on how we should live as children of the King in this fallen age. I highly recommend this podcast as a daily primer which is able to help us put on the lenses of a Christian, enabling us to walk and talk in accord with the commands of our Lord.

Is the Watchmaker Argument Still Valid?

In crossing a heath, suppose I pitched my foot against a stone, and were asked how the stone came to be there; I might possibly answer, that, for any thing I knew to the contrary, it had lain there for ever: nor would it perhaps be very easy to show the absurdity of this answer. But suppose I had found a watch upon the ground, and it should be inquired how the watch happened to be in that place; I should hardly think of the answer which I had before given, that, for any thing I knew, the watch might have always been there. Yet why should not this answer serve for the watch as well as for the stone? Why is it not as admissible in the second case, as in the first? For this reason, and for no other, viz. that, when we come to inspect the watch, we perceive (what we could not discover in the stone) that its several parts are framed and put together for a purpose, e. g. that they are so formed and adjusted as to produce motion, and that motion so regulated as to point out the hour of the day; that, if the different parts had been differently shaped from what they are, of a different size from what they are, or placed after any other manner, or in any other order, than that in which they are placed, either no motion at all would have been carried on in the machine, or none which would have answered the use that is now served by it.

Two Louisville churches agree to trade places

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Preservation Louisville has listed it as one of the city's most endangered sacred spaces, but an historic church building is about to be resurrected. The church was built in 1910 and has been home to Lampton Baptist Church since the 70's. There have been no services there in more that a year, but that is about to change. It's one of Louisville's most impressive structures, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. But time, and shrinking attendance, left the church in serious disrepair. "We were not able to maintain it with the membership that we had, just everyday light, gas and water," said Lampton's new pastor, Robert Lyons. Lyons says the death blow came last January when an aging boiler failed, pipes froze and burst, and water flooded the sanctuary. Lampton was forced to move to a temporary location. Right now, the building is dark and cold, but thanks to a new agreement, the sanctuary could one day be filled again with worshipers. Immanuel Baptist is a growing church in the nearby Shelby Park neighborhood. "There were about 17 people here in 2002, and now we're looking at about 600 people on Sunday morning," said Pastor Ryan Fullerton.

The Cosby Show Dilemma

This is not new territory for American celebrity. Woody Allen and R. Kelly are also pop culture giants who have been accused of pretty awful things by women over whom they had positions of power and privilege. Neither was convicted, and after a few weeks of public handwringing and “what can we do with their work?” thinkpieces, both were allowed to resume their successful careers. We don’t know how it will go this time. To this point Cosby has claimed innocence, and he will most likely settle with this new victim like he did with previous women. If it were to follow the script, his work would be back on TV in a few months.

The Real Reasons Young Adults Drop Out of Church

The reason that many church-attending young adults stopped going to church upon graduating from high school? Their faith just wasn’t personally meaningful to them. They did not have a first-hand faith. The church had not become a valued and valuable expression in their life—one that impacts how they live and how they relate and how they grow. Church was perhaps something their parents wanted them do. They may have grown up in church, and perhaps they faced pressure from parents and even peers to be involved in church. But it wasn’t a first-hand faith.

12 Head-Scratching Carols of Christmas

This holiday classic is pretty fun for the first couple of verses, but as you listen further, the ride on the “one horse open sleigh” turns into a wintertime nightmare. First, the rider and the unfortunate “Miss Fannie Bright” get stuck in a snowbank, as the icy joyride turns into a worst-case-scenario: “Miss Fannie Bright
 / Seated by my side
/ The horse was lean and lank/
Misfortune seemed his lot
/ He got into a drifted bank /
And we got upsot.” We’re not sure what “upsot” means, but it can’t be good. Then, the poor songwriter, slips on the ice and hurts his back, only to have passers-by laugh and leave him injured in the snow. “I went out on the snow / And on my back I fell / A gent was riding by / In a one-horse open sleigh / He laughed a there I sprawling lie / But quickly drove away.” Umm, Merry Christmas?

"Something to Do With Something Else" - The Scriptorium Daily

Why are more people, and more kinds of people, upset about the death of Eric Garner and the failure to even indict the police who took him down? Partly it’s the power of the video, which captures the interaction so fully and preserves the pitiful final words of Garner. But I think the most significant factor is that this outrage comes across our national awareness before the Ferguson outrage (death of Michael Brown, refusal to indict officer) has dissipated. We  haven’t even caught our breath from Ferguson, and now this. I think a lot of Americans are experiencing the Ferguson-Garner combination as a one-two punch, with no break in between. Let us have a little slack, a break in between these events! But no: as Ferguson protests continue and calls for justice escalate, a whole other outrage comes across our screens. Can’t we let things simmer down first, reset back to “everything’s pretty much okay” level for a few weeks?

2.5 Million Children Are Homeless in US, New Data Reveals

A historic number of America's youth – 2.5 million children – are homeless according to a report recently released by the National Center on Family Homelessness. These children, the report shows, are victims of a number of variables that contribute to homelessness including single motherhood, racial disparities and low household incomes.

What One Racially Divided Family Can Do

Despite the seemingly manifest truth that even Christian blacks and Christian whites are as divided as the rest of America, the gospel says something strange. It says the wall between us is no more real than the Berlin Wall that was torn down 25 years ago. The wall between us in the church was torn down some 2,000 years ago. It may not feel like it; it may not look like it, but the reality is every black Christian is a brother or sister to every white Christian. We are no longer strangers to one another, but are family.

39 How many explanations are there for the existence of our universe? - Christian Research Institute

Second, the universe sprang from nothing. This proposition flies in the face of both the laws of cause and effect and energy conservation. As has been well said, “Nothing comes from nothing, nothing ever could.” Or, to put it another way, there simply are no free lunches. The conditions that hold true in this universe prevent any possibility of matter springing out of nothing.Third, the universe eternally existed. The law of entropy, which predicts that a universe that has eternally existed would have died an “eternity ago” of heat loss, devastates this hypothesis.

43 Two Dozen or So of My Favorite Debates | Reasonable Faith

19. Henry Morgenthaler several times across Canada. Morgenthaler was an infamous Canadian abortionist and president of the Canadian Humanist Association. He agreed to a series of debates on “Humanism vs. Christianity,” on the condition that we would not discuss abortion (a topic he was tired of). That was great by me, so several debates were scheduled. Prior to flying to Canada I was in Thousand Oaks, California, speaking at a church. After the service a man approached me and introduced himself as someone who works with people in Hollywood. He said, “I’m not saying that you’re poorly dressed, but clothes make a statement about yourself, and if you’re going to be debating this prominent Canadian personality, you need be sure you’re making the right statement. I’d like to help you if you’re willing.” I replied, “Look, I don’t want to come across like some well-heeled televangelist. I’d rather look a little tatty.” He said, “I understand. But we can make the correct statement without being extreme.” So he took me that afternoon to see his tailor at Nordstroms. He bought me a beautiful charcoal gray suit with a cranberry pink stripe, a pair of oxblood wingtips, a couple of white dress shirts, and two silk ties.

Faith and Doubt | Reasonable Faith

But perhaps you’re already a regenerate Christian. Then you need to cultivate the work of the Holy Spirit in your life. You can grieve the Holy Spirit through sin and quench His leading and power by not allowing Him full reign in your life. Confess sin as soon as you’re aware of it, and allow the Holy Spirit to empower and direct you. Be sure to maintain a devotional life, with regular times alone of prayer and Bible study. Take your doubts to God and ask Him to give you grace to persevere. Cultivate the Christian virtues in your life, and then you can claim the promise of II Peter 1. 5-11 : “if you do this you will never fall .” Make sure you participate in truly meaningful corporate worship in the setting of a local church. Lone Ranger Christians generally don’t make it, and even a small group setting is no substitute for the church, which is the body of Christ locally, replete with all His gifts. Be sure you’re exercising your own spiritual gift in the context of a local church, so that you are serving others. I assume that you’ve followed through on your conversion by being baptized and regularly celebrate the Lord’s Supper.

A Modern-Day Version of the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant (VIDEO)

Seeing it acted out in modern times is very humbling. It may even help someone with making a decision in a similar situation. We are all human and we all make mistakes. There is not a better feeling in the world than being forgiven for something bad that you did. It is also important that we forgive others who encounter the same problem, and most of all, forgive ourselves. Forgive as God forgave you.

Conservatives, Politicians Join Condemnation of Eric Garner Grand Jury Decision as Protests Continue

The Lower Manhattan skyline, including One World Trade Center, is seen in the background as protesters, demanding justice for Eric Garner, enter Brooklyn off the Brooklyn Bridge in New York December 4, 2014. Protesters swarmed streets of Manhattan and other cities for a second night of mostly peaceful rallies to denounce a New York grand jury's decision to spare a white police officer from criminal prosecution in the choking death of an unarmed black man. The reaction to Wednesday's decision not to indict officer Daniel Pantaleo for his role in the videotaped confrontation that left 43-year-old Eric Garner dead echoed a wave of outrage sparked nine days earlier by a similar outcome in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager by a white policeman in Ferguson, Missouri.
