No Indictment Against NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in Chokehold Death of Eric Garner

Family and supporters of Eric Garner, 43, the 400-pound asthmatic father who died after he was locked in a chokehold by a New York City police officer in Staten Island this summer, expressed collective shock at the decision of a grand jury not to bring criminal charges against the officer on Wednesday.

Sociologist George Yancey examines bias against Bible-believing Christians

[…]These numbers seem low considering that I have a sample of almost three thousand respondents; however, it should be noted that these comments comparing Christians to animals are unprompted. (It is also instructive to consider which terms were not used at all. For example, ape or gorilla was not used by any of the respondents to describe conservative Christians.) Closed ended questions providing respondents with the opportunity to characterize conservative Christians in animalistic terms would likely garner a nontrivial level of support. The comments about Christians as passive animals, combined with the relative willingness of the respondents to use the term brainwashed, occur often enough to provide some confidence that characterizations of Christians as unthinking passive followers are accepted within subcultures with high levels of Christianophobic animosity. If there is any doubt that there is an animalistic element to the type of dehumanizing occurring among my respondents, the use of these animals clearly indicates that Christians are not always seen as human.

Talking with Atheists

Few topics are discussed more often between modern day Christians than how to carry out the Great Commission in this ever-changing world. So, considering that I’m a former atheist, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’ve been asked many times to provide suggestions as to how to approach atheists. I tell people that when talking with atheists I keep a few preliminary considerations in mind as well as employ a few specific tactics. In this post I’ll discuss some of the preliminary considerations I’m always thinking about when I talk with someone about the fundamental truths supporting God’s existence. In my next post, I’ll discuss a few specific tactics I use and recommend to others.

What is Truth? (On the Nature and Importance of Truth Today)

This has been a subject of much debate in postmodernist circles, where the traditional view of truth as objective and knowable is no longer accepted. Many even outside of academic discussions may be as cynical about truth as Pilate. “What is truth?” they smirk, without waiting for an answer. Postmodernist philosopher Richard Rorty claimed that truth is what his colleagues let him get away with. [1] Unless we are clear about the notion of truth, any claim to truth — religious or otherwise — will perplex more than enlighten.

Is the mark of the Beast a microchip? In October 2004 the Food and Drug Administration approved the marketing of a microchip implantable under the skin of humans for medical identification. The physical evidence in the Michael Brown case supported the officer [updated with DNA evidence]

The significance of this wound and related physical evidence is that it places Brown’s right hand within 6 to 9 inches of the barrel of Wilson’s firearm.  This physical evidence is thus quite consistent with Wilson’s testimony that Brown was trying to get hold of Wilson’s weapon, creating a fear in Wilson that he was going to get shot.  It also creates a problem for those who view Brown as having been somehow accosted by Wilson and was just trying to escape.  At least in the theories that I have seen sketched out, no explanation is offered for why Brown (who weighed around 300 pounds) had been forced by Wilson to have his right hand in a position where it was close to the gun  and inside Wilson’s police car.

Hands Up, Don't Choke: Eric Garner Was Killed By Police For No Reason

Why, it’s almost as if the grand jury system is just a convenient means for prosecutors to get the outcome they want wrapped in a veneer of due process. Want to indict a ham sandwich? Consider it indicted. Texas Gov. Rick Perry was indicted for vetoing a spending bill, but a New York prosecutor can’t indict an officer who killed another man in an incident that was completely captured on video? Come on.

6 Ways We Experience the Holy Spirit

Throughout Scripture we see that God guides his people in mission by putting special burdens into their spirits. When Nehemiah left for Jerusalem to rebuild its walls, he didn’t have a command from God. He simply said that God had “put it into his heart” to do it (Neh. 2:12). When Paul came to Athens, Luke records his spirit was “provoked” within him about the idolatry in Athens (Acts 17:16). He evidently took this provocation as a direction to stay and preach the gospel there. Later in his ministry he would identify a holy “ambition” that God had put in his heart to preach Christ only where he had never been named (Rom. 15:20). Up until then, his ministry had been broad—debate the gospel, build up the churches everywhere—but the Spirit later narrowed the focus of his ministry. Throughout our lives we (at times) experience a “holy discontent” about a particular situation or the pressing in of a specific promise of God to our context. This is often the Spirit’s invitation to pursue a particular ministry.

Why We Don’t Need a Mrs. Jesus

This reoccurring divine family motif of a less-than-God Jesus and a more-than-human Mary can frustrate Christians who know that it’s false. Still, when these kinds of theories come up—often around Christmas and Easter—they get people who don’t normally engage in conversations about Jesus talking about him, what the Scriptures say, and what history reveals. In the wake of sensationalized books, Christians have an opportunity to take advantage of the interest in Jesus.

Worship Is an Act of Reversal

Underwhelmed hearts produce third-rate melodies. We cannot truly sing a song from the heart unless Christ has overwhelmed it. There is only melody where there is love for God — however varying the love for him might be. When we lift our voices together in song, we proclaim that the object of our love is the one who has made all things, the one who never passes away. We take our affections off of these transient things and put them on our God. Singing is an outward practice of the church that points to the inner reversal of our loves. We not only corporately proclaim this reversal of loves to encourage one another, but the very act of singing itself fortifies and deepens our own personal inner reversal. Singing is a wonderfully remarkable means toward unity and personal deepening.

Where’s Your Happiness?

The gospel is so freeing. Especially to us creative folk who have a strong tendency to find our identity in what we do and not in who we are, or whose we are. It would serve us well to take some time every morning before the craziness starts to think about these things. To get into God's Word and remind ourselves of our reward. To remember that today our "flesh may fail, and our heart may fail, but God is the strength of our hearts and our portion forever" (Ps. 73:26). To see the beautiful smile of God—not because of our perfect service, because of his perfect sacrifice (2 Cor. 5:21). To daily ask for the "strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that [we] may be filled with all the fulness of God" (Eph 3:19).

Make This Christmas Unforgettable for Your Children (One Simple Tip)

My happiest Christmas memory is the time each year that my aunt Nancy directed my cousins and me in a reenactment of the nativity. The youngest among us — a girl — was always baby Jesus, and as Mary, my main job was not dropping her when I placed her in the manger (and avoiding wayward staffs twirled by the ragtag band of boy cousin shepherds).

How Jesus Became God in the Flesh - Apologetics Book: Christian Analysis Defeats the Skepticism of Bart Ehrman: How Jesus Became God in the Flesh

"There is no conflict between religion and science; Only the conflict between two sciences, that of the 4th century BCE and the science of 2014." Joseph Campbell. Your thesis irresponsibly confuses evolution and human progress with God-- with a fallacious Post Hoc ergo Propter hoc rationale. Since there is vast scientific proof of the former and none of the latter, we can readily dismiss it as just more sciolistic confirmation bias. A third grade understanding of the tens of thousand of years of human progress from the paleolithic, Iron age, Bronze age to the high Neolithic more than proves the evolution of human reason from the Hunter gatherers to Planting societies, to the stargazing Zigurat builders and the early foundations of the "good society". Sadly, what you are arguing requires an astonishing campaign of ignorance, or denial of history, science, and logic -- again negating the very point of your thesis. Belief in god presupposes nescience, not reason. Ironically, by arguing for the opposite you undermine your entire premise: Reason is not born of god, but of MAN and we have the entire anthropological record of man to prove it.

The Church and Mental Illness Part 1: Aspirations v. Reality

Whether we like it or not, the reality is that, if we want the people in our churches to be aware of any sort of ministry or issue or attitude we’d like to address, the pastor has to talk about it. Mental health is no different. But as you can see from the following graphic, it is certainly not a topic we prioritize, by any means. About 66% of pastors say that they mention mental illness in a message, sermon, or homily once a year, rarely, or never.

25 Two Dozen or So of My Favorite Debates | Reasonable Faith

19. Henry Morgenthaler several times across Canada. Morgenthaler was an infamous Canadian abortionist and president of the Canadian Humanist Association. He agreed to a series of debates on “Humanism vs. Christianity,” on the condition that we would not discuss abortion (a topic he was tired of). That was great by me, so several debates were scheduled. Prior to flying to Canada I was in Thousand Oaks, California, speaking at a church. After the service a man approached me and introduced himself as someone who works with people in Hollywood. He said, “I’m not saying that you’re poorly dressed, but clothes make a statement about yourself, and if you’re going to be debating this prominent Canadian personality, you need be sure you’re making the right statement. I’d like to help you if you’re willing.” I replied, “Look, I don’t want to come across like some well-heeled televangelist. I’d rather look a little tatty.” He said, “I understand. But we can make the correct statement without being extreme.” So he took me that afternoon to see his tailor at Nordstroms. He bought me a beautiful charcoal gray suit with a cranberry pink stripe, a pair of oxblood wingtips, a couple of white dress shirts, and two silk ties.

10 Things Every Newlywed Should Know

Thanks Ann for sharing these points. My wife and I, have also found the importance in the first few years to identify patterns that cause tension or conflict in the marriage. What are the root issues you continually come back to? For example multiple issues might lead back to a common thread of wanting control. Or, multiple issues might lead back to insecurity, etc. Invest in this by Investigating together, with other couples and counselors what some of the core issues are. Finding these out early in the marriage and learning how to identify them and communicate well regarding them, will save years and years of potential marital pain.

30 How do we know that the Bible is divine in origin? - Christian Research Institute

To begin with, the Bible has stronger manuscript support than any other work of classical history— including Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Caesar, and Tacitus. Equally amazing is the fact that the Bible has been virtually unaltered since the original writing, as is attested by scholars who have compared the earliest extant manuscripts with manuscripts written centuries later. Additionally, the reliability of the Bible is affirmed by the testimony of its authors, who were eyewitnesses—or close associates of eyewitnesses—to the recorded events, and by secular historians who confirm the many events, people, places, and customs chronicled in Scripture.

“Imagination Redeemed”: Biblically Grounded and Aesthetically Informed, Free for CAPC Members

The chapters themselves cover a general overview of the imagination (chapter 1), the connections between the imagination and God (chapter 2), evil (chapter 3), the future (chapter 4), and the community (chapter 5). This last chapter makes an excellent case for the development of the imagination within a community, something we at Christ and Pop Culture would heartily agree with. Following this last chapter is a conclusion that makes connections with the imagination and apologetics. In doing so, the authors draw heavily from C. S. Lewis, arguing that we need more apologists like Lewis who “can reach both the intellect and the imagination of people today” (151).

Renown Youth Conference

To be a Christian is to be a disciple. Jesus said that anyone who would be a disciple of Christ must “deny himself and take up his cross and follow me” (Mark 8:34). Nobody, however, does this perfectly. All Christians face struggles and obstacles in their walk with Christ. And yet, the New Testament calls disciples of Jesus to “grow in grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).

Mass resignations from Finnish Lutheran Church over same-sex marriages

Finland's Lutheran Church is the country's established religion and around 75 per cent of Finns are members, paying a special church tax. The surge in resignations during the weekend has clearly been driven in part by the Archbishop's remarks, but resignations have in any case increased in recent years thanks partly to the efforts of agnostic campaigners – who set up the "Leave the Church" website to make it easier for members to leave – partly because more Finns wish to avoid paying the Church tax, and partly because the general opposition of the Church to same-sex relationships has not played well in a largely liberal and secular society.

Ferguson: Michael Brown's Stepfather Apologizes for 'Burn' Chant Amid Police Probe; 'I Was So Angry'

"But to place blame solely on me for the conditions of our community, and country, after the grand jury decision goes way too far and is as wrong as the decision itself. To declare a state of emergency and send a message of war, and not peace, before a grand jury decision was announced is also wrong," he said. "In the end, I've lived in this community for a long time. The last thing I truly wanted was to see it go up in flames. In spite of my frustration, it really hurt to see that."

Joy to the World

The baby born in Bethlehem was born to die in our place. He went to the cross and received the wrath we deserved for our sin (Luke 23:46). He died to purchase the joy the angels announced at his birth. And three days later, he rose from the dead, the firstborn of all who would follow him. He appeared to his disciples and showed them how all of the Bible was pointing to him — the baby born in a manger, the preacher of good news, the Son of God crucified on the cross, the King who conquered the grave, the Joy of the world.

How Architecture Testifies to Beauty and Brokenness in our Cities

“As we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal" (2 Cor. 4:18). Brokenness in our cities can be seen through abandoned buildings or sites due to economic downturn. Also, there is brokenness visible in derelict sites tainted with industrial waste and marginalized neighborhoods that are neglected and unsafe. Restoration comes not simply by fixing what is seen; true redemption provides solutions for the unseen needs. Good architecture helps communities flourish by cultivating a healthy sense of collective identity. This identity can be formed as a result of building places for learning, for health care services, and for community programs.

To a number of pro-life organizations, this case presented a clear pro-life issue. The PDA passed in 1978 with support from both pro-choice feminist and pro-life groups. The PDA’s chief Senate sponsor, Democrat Harrison Williams, argued that the measure could reduce the “tragedy of needless, and unwanted abortions;” then-Senator Joe Biden warned that without the law women “will be encouraged to choose abortion as a means of surviving economically.”
