Netflix Socks Pause the Show You’re Watching If You Fall Asleep

Because you shouldn't miss out on one blissful moment of your favorite Netflix shows, Netflix has created a tutorial for building a pair of socks that pauses a show when you fall asleep. The socks use an accelerometer to detect when you've stopped moving and sends a signal to your TV using infrared LEDs once you've fallen asleep. And just so you don't have to sacrifice style for utility, Netflix has also included knitting patterns inspired by original Netflix shows. There is now no reason why every waking minute can’t be filled with binge-watching.

The Death of God Is Greatly Exaggerated

@Terry P. Carriker First, no controversial decision was made in 325. You're speaking of the Council of Nicea, which had nothing to do with the Canon and everything to do with the Arian heresy. Arius claimed that Jesus was not God, but a created being.  The Canon was set long before then by the process of using only those books and letters written by an Apostle or a person with firsthand knowledge of the Apostle. Nearly the entire New Testament can be recreated by reading quotes in letters from Clement, Ignatius, and Polycarp. The Muratorian Fragment from the reign of Marcus Aurelius (c. AD 160-AD 180) lists 25 books as authoritative. 24 of those are in the Canon of 27.  So your assertion that Constantine edited the Bible in 325 is demonstrably false and absurd. Second, that is a straw man argument. No-one has said that God (the Holy Spirit, to be precise) has stopped inspiring Man. Listen to Bach's Mass in B Minor, or read Mere Christianity for evidence of inspiration. (cont.)

Obey the Government for God’s Sake

The Pharisees are aiming to entangle Jesus in a trap. They intend to hang him on the horns of a dilemma. So they come and they say, “Teacher, we know that you are true and teach the way of God truthfully, and you do not care about anyone’s opinion, for you are not swayed by appearances” (Matthew 22:16). We know you speak the way of God with faithfulness, and that you are not impressed by anybody’s faith and don’t cow to anybody’s opinion. This is called buttering up. Jesus is going to call it malicious, because they really don’t give a rip what Jesus thinks. They mean to entangle him, to trap him. How? “Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” (Matthew 22:17).

Hand out two pieces of paper to each person in the group. Say the Lord’s Prayer together. When it comes to the line ‘forgive us our sins’, take a moment of quiet to each write on one of the pieces of paper the things for which you are asking God’s forgiveness. Then gather the papers in a large saucepan, light a match and let the papers burn. If you have an open fireplace, burn that the papers there. As you say the line ‘as we forgive those who sin against us’, take Your second piece of paper and write down the names of those you need to forgive. Ask for God’s help to forgive these people, and again gather the papers and burn them. Then continue saying the rest of the Lord’s Prayer together.

Michael Brown - Of Course Muslims and Christians Don’t Worship the Same God

It is true that the three primary monotheistic faiths, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, all believe in an eternal, uncreated Creator God to whom all human beings must one day give account. But it is self-evident that Muslims and Christians do not worship the same God.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing

The angels demonstrate a reverence and admiration that we, in our fallen state, struggle to display and maintain. Kirsten Powers: Becoming a Christian Ruined My Love of Christmas

The Christmas season was a magical time, made all the more special because I got to experience the magic twice. I helped pick out and decorate two Christmas trees, one at my mother’s house and one at my father’s. Wherever we woke up on Christmas morning, my brother and I were greeted by mountains of presents piled under the tree. We would spend hours plowing through them and then look at each other with delight as we realized we would get to do it all over again just a few hours later at the other house. Christmas meant two of everything.

Sunday Quote!- Russell Moore on Christmas and the Strangeness of Christianity

Russell Moore’s  Onward: Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel  is one of the best books I’ve read all year. He has a way with words that makes reading it a joy, while also giving new insights and perspectives on questions that are highly relevant. In his chapter on religious liberty, he writes about seeing a couple ads in a magazine on a plane. One is a beer ad that said “Silent nights are overrated” and another asked “Who says it is better to give than to receive?” Moore’s comments on the potential offense of these ads are well-worth reading. It’s a longer quote than I normally share, but I think it is worth the time to read:

How to Love God by Getting More Sleep

In the Psalms, David shows that peaceful sleep is an act of trust and a sign of humility. “I lie down and sleep,” David said, “I wake again, because the Lord sustains me” (Ps 3:5–6). He also said, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety” (Ps 4:8).  Getting a good night’s rest shows that we know God is in control and will watch over us when we are at our most vulnerable.

Bonhoeffer's Last Advent

Advent 1944, though, would find Bonhoeffer in a different place and in more straightened circumstances. With the failure of the Stauffenberg plot against the regime on July 20, 1944, Hitler unleashed a campaign of reprisals that resulted in thousands of deaths. The noose around Bonhoeffer’s neck grew tighter as his own role in the conspiracy became more difficult to hide. On Sunday, October 8, 1944, Bonhoeffer was removed from Tegel Prison, where he had spent the last eighteen months, and taken to the cellar prison of the Reich SS Headquarters in Prince Albrecht Street. Family visits were no longer permitted, the writing of letters was restricted, and most contact with the outside world eliminated. The two spiritual artifacts he had relied on in Tegel—his hymnal and his precious copy of the Luther Bible—were both taken away. Bonhoeffer’s biographers differ as to whether he was physically tortured in the Gestapo prison, though some of his cellmates certainly were. To one of them he described the harsh interrogations he was forced to endure as “simply disgusting.”

http://conference.thegospelcoalition.org/2016

We invite you to the conference for women, but not all about women. It's a gathering of women around the Word of God. To this third TGC Women's Conference, we come joyfully but soberly, knowing that suffering meets us at every hand, right at home and all across the globe. What better book for us in 2016 than 1 Peter—packed with gospel perspective on our short lives. It's a little epistle, but it gives us a big view of who we are in Christ and how we are to live as redeemed sojourners in this world. How do we stand firm in God's true grace? How do we offer a strong shining witness to Jesus Christ even in the midst of fiery trials? Peter points us insistently to the Lord Jesus, to his suffering on our behalf, and to the resurrection life he makes possible for those who believe in him. At TGCW16 we won't be getting away from real life; we will be seeing it clearly, in light of gospel help and hope. By God's grace, we will go away better prepared to live and share resurrection life, in a world of suffering.

The Joy Project

Megachurch's 'Star Wars' Event Has 'Darth Santa,' Han Solo Pastor Delivering Sermon

The event will end with a message of hope that tells the story of Jesus' birth in a unique way. Liquid Church lead pastor Tim Lucas told The Christian Post earlier this week, "We're telling the story of Christmas from Revelation 12, which is very different than Matthew or Luke. Revelation 12 kind of gives you a glimpse of the cosmic combat behind the stars, and so we're kind of using 'Star Wars' as a tie-in to represent that." Lucas told CP that he expects 9,000 people to attend Cosmic Christmas Eve. The church has hosted 12 Days of Star Wars Christmas, which began Dec. 6, to lead up to the release of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." This Sunday, the pastor is expected to dress as Han Solo during his weekly message.

What We Get Wrong About Advent

I don’t want to sound like the Grinch, but it has all begun to feel a bit hollow. It often seems we are looking for happiness and hope where it was never meant to be found—in facades and fake smiles. This has robbed an entire season of the meaning and beauty it inherently has; not one of an over-realized eschatology where everything is already perfect, but a realistic hope that though things are broken now, Jesus is making the world right again—and He's on His way back to finish the job.

New-Time Religion

T he West, we are told, has entered the secular age. Religious faith is irreversibly shriveling, opening space for a society governed by reason. What such statements miss is that while traditional religion may well fade, we will never see an end to something like religious belief. We’re subjective beings whose need for meaning will never be satisfied merely by what can be “proved.” Thus, even if Judaism and Christianity are reduced to vestigial influence in America, they will be replaced not by unbelief but by different creeds.

Immanuel: Is God Still With Us?

In late January 1956, Martin Luther King Jr. received a threatening phone call at his house. It was not the first foreboding message he had received. But on this night as his children and wife lay sleeping, the weight of the civil rights movement was too heavy. He decided that the risk was too great. He began to map out an exit strategy. At midnight he bowed over the kitchen table and began to pray, “I am afraid. The people are looking to me for leadership, and if I stand before them without strength and courage, they too will falter. I am at the end of my powers. I have nothing left. I’ve come to the point where I can’t face it alone.”

Going Home for Christmas? Honor Mom and Dad

Do you think your parents messed up your childhood? My wife and I shared our testimonies in our wedding, and both sets of parents heard us as repudiating how they had raised us. Looking back, while our intentions were good, there was a better way to deliver the message without making our parents feel like we hated them. Consider verbally thanking them. Look them in the eyes this Christmas and offer specific reasons you are thankful for them. A quick survey of the Bible will find that not being thankful is tied to unbelief.

Is the Resurrection Hypothesis Really As Absurd as the Alien Hypothesis?

For more resources visit: http://www.reasonablefaith.org The week following Easter in 2015, Dr Craig flew to Dallas, Texas, where he spoke in a downtown bar for the Bible and Beer Consortium. This ministry holds outreach events in this large, dark Dallas bar on a regular basis. Apparently, the bar is only too happy to do so because of the large crowds the events attract. There were several hundred who came out to hear Dr Craig give a talk on the resurrection of Jesus as an event of history. It was a delightful time defending the heart of the Gospel, and Dr Craig really liked the way the BBC is taking the Gospel to where the people really are. Wheaton Professor Who Wrote Controversial Facebook Post About Islam Has Been Put on Administrative Leave

I stand in religious solidarity with Muslims because they, like me, a Christian, are people of the book. And as Pope Francis stated last week, we worship the same God … As part of my Advent Worship, I will wear the hijab to work at Wheaton College, to play in Chi-town, in the airport and on the airplane to my home state that initiated one of the first anti-Sharia laws (read: unconstitutional and Islamophobic), and at church. I invite all women into the narrative that is embodied, hijab-wearing solidarity with our Muslim sisters--for whatever reason. We Already Have a Viable Third Party

According to the latest polls, only one percent of voters will cast their ballot for a third party candidate, which means that all the talk of a protest vote against the two main parties will amount to little or nothing. Yet there is already a viable third party in America. It simply needs to awaken to its calling. Dr. Martin Luther King spoke of this “third party” as well – although not in those terms – saying that it “must be reminded that it is not the master or the servant of the state, but rather the conscience of the state.” King was speaking of a group of multiplied millions of Americans whose ultimate “citizenship is in heaven” (to use the expression of Paul in the New Testament), a people who are called to go against the grain and challenge the status quo, to be champions of justice and compassion, to lead the way in societal change. He was (and I am) speaking about followers of Jesus who take their faith seriously and live it out holistically, those who make up the Church from a biblical standpoint (as opposed to Christians in name only). It is this entity that King believed “must be the guide and the critic of the state, and never its tool.
