What Does It Mean to Have Been Created In the 'Image of God'?

My dog, Bailey, is the best pet I have ever had the privilege to live with. We’ve had a number of dogs, cats, birds, hamsters, lizards and guinea pigs over the years, but in my mind, Bailey sits at the top of the list. As I enjoy her company (now that I’m working at home more than ever before), I can understand why so many of us hope that our pets will be part of our eternal life with God. I’m convinced from scripture that animals have souls, but I still have my reservations about whether or not the souls of animals are eternal. I’m not sure that the Bible is emphatically clear on that issue. One thing is certain, however: we humans are different. According to Genesis 1, we have been created in the “image of God”; we are His last creation, placed carefully in our world after God prepared our environment and filled it with other creatures. Much can be said about what distinguishes us from the other creations of God, but three characteristics of humans seem to stand out as the key to understanding what it means to bear the image of God:

5 Reasons You Should Get Apologetics Training

But isn’t apologetics someone else’s job? Isn’t it reserved for pastors, Bible teachers, and other “intellectual” Christians? The answer is an unequivocal no. As C.S. Lewis said, the question is not if we are apologists, but whether we will be effective apologists. All of us are called to have an answer for our hope in Jesus Christ (e.g. 1 Peter 3:15 ).

The Unraveling of the Sexual Revolution

Does God’s view of sex really bring harm to people? Let us ask some simple questions: What would the world be like if everyone followed the biblical plan for sex, engaging in sexual activity in a committed, lifelong relationship with someone of the opposite sex? Would there be more suffering? Or would there be less? Would we have more intact marriages, or more broken homes? Would there be more fatherless homes, or more involved fathers? Would STDs, teen pregnancies, and abortions increase or decrease?

Why Christian Kids Leave the Faith

Few things are sadder to witness than people who once professed faith leaving it all behind. This is especially true when those people were raised in Christian homes by God-fearing parents. These children were given every opportunity to put their faith in Jesus but determined instead to turn their backs on him. Why would they make such a tragic choice?

Case-Making 101: How does the Bible compare to other ancient documents?

Last week we looked at the evidence for the reliability of the Bible with the early Church’s canonization process that demonstrates we can be certain that we have the right books, contrary to cultural spin. We also looked at many reasons Christians reject the Apocrypha and Gnostic books with an emphasis on the dating of those writings. With that in mind it is also important to look at other variables scholars consider when reviewing ancient documents like the Bible, one of the most important is called “textual criticism:”

There Is Hope for Atheists!

To keep a long story short: I attended a Creation Seminar at Cedarville College [now Cedarville University], sat in rapt attention as Ken Ham told me “the rest of the story,” and I realized that all of the fossil finds I believed supported evolution were, in all cases, misinterpreted. I was blown away! So, learning the truth about evolution preceded my realizing that God was real (after all!) and that the Bible was His Word. I became a creationist before I became a believer in Christ.

Apologetics Restored my Faith

But I was what you would call a “nominal Christian.” I would go to church weekly, attend every Bible study, and even serve in many capacities. But looking back, those were empty times. I knew the stories of the Bible, the head knowledge of who God was. I had the typical Christian education: God created the universe and everything in it, Man fell into sin, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came down, died and rose again for our sins because He loved us. While that isn’t wrong, that was the extent of my faith. I was living comfortably in my Christianity and my faith was never being challenged so I had no reason to defend it.

But we have to understand the difference between faith and bargaining. Bargaining is when you say, “God, help me close this deal and I’ll give you part of it.” God doesn’t work that way. God asks for faith. He wants us to sacrifice in advance, without worrying about whether we’ll get anything in return; he wants us to let him figure out how to repay us.

From Bethlehem in the Majesty of the Name of the Lord

Micah is a hard prophet to understand because the book alternates back and forth between threats of doom and promises of hope. It is hard to figure out what situations he is referring to and how the hope and doom relate to each other. Probably the reason the book is arranged like this is to make the point that where God and his people are concerned, there is always hope, even in the darkest catastrophe. So Micah mingles gloom and glory through his book. We will take a look at the gloom first and then focus in on his great promise about the Messiah who will come from Bethlehem in the majesty of the name of the Lord.

An Introduction to the Cosmological Argument

Apologetics, or defending the faith, is something every Christian should be involved in ( 1 Pet. 3:15 ). While we’ve written extensively on apologetics on 1st Century Faith Today, we have long neglected descriptions of foundational concepts. We are beginning our crash course in apologetics by examining one of the “Big Three” apologetic arguments: the cosmological argument.

Does the Multiverse Discount Design? Quick Response.

Distinguished philosopher Robin Collins provides multiple reasons for God’s existence in the context of multiverse theory. First, we should prefer the hypothesis that naturally flows from the evidence, and for which we have independent confirmation. As Collins explains, we already know that minds can produce objects, like Swiss watches, that are fine-tuned. Therefore, positing God as the best explanation fits what we already observe minds can do.

The Difference Between Christian Grace and Mormon Grace | Cold Case Christianity

What Do We Mean When We Use the Term, “Heaven”? Let me try to describe the difference between “Christian grace” and “Mormon grace” with an illustration that I’ve used hundreds of times training Christians to discuss their faith with Mormons. Before we begin, however, we need to define a foundational term: “heaven”. Christians sometimes ask their Mormon friends, “If you died today, would you be in heaven?” or “What do you have to do to go to heaven?” Unless we define the term “heaven” this approach will not help us understand the differences between the two faith systems. I never use the term “heaven” when talking to my Mormon friends and family. Instead, I focus on “the greatest gift that God can offer us after death”. For Christians, this is, in fact, heaven; the realm of god we will share for all eternity. But the Mormon heaven is divided into three levels and virtually everyone is going to get into one of these levels. Any of these heavenly “ranks” could accurately be called “heaven”. So we need to be more specific with our Mormon friends; for them, the “the greatest gift that God can offer us after death” is not just “heaven”, it’s exaltation in Celestial Kingdom.

Christmas, Colossians and Christian Creeds

Those today who scoff at the creeds of Christianity tend to be folks who reject the doctrine of the Trinity, the Deity of Christ, and the fact that Jesus is the only way to the Father. (John 14:6) The false teachers in the first century of Christianity would have rejected the Apostles' Creed and the Nicene Creed if they had still been alive when those creeds were formulated. False teachers do not believe that Jesus is God in the flesh, even though some of them have no problem calling Christ a good prophet or even "a god." Thankfully, Scripture presents the true nature of Jesus and the supernatural ministry of the King of Kings.

A Messianic Jew Reflects on Christmas | The Stream

As a believer coming from a not so atypical secular Jewish heritage Christmas for me was little more than a demonstration of capitalism cloaked in dubious religiosity. Sure that take on this celebration of light, color & festive familial cheer was a bit cynical. So not unlike most Jews at this time of year, Christmas was little more than a few days off from school or work. Today, there are still some remnants of that concept lingering around the peripherals of my mind. My heart however tells of a very different take on Christmas. Not December 25th but as Mr Brown implies each & every day that grace transcends both the traditions of men & the wiles of the enemy. Christmas to me is something of a reminder that there are those who place perhaps greater emphasis on all the holiday trappings ( such as they are ) than on the “reason for the season” cliche’ as that is. It is a call to remember that in spite of the relatively” light”afflictions we who would honor the true “spirit of Christmas” on occasion may be faced with ….

Are Scientists Smarter Now, or Dumber? | Evolution News

My theory is: Scientists nowadays are far dumber than scientists centuries ago, which is a consequence of over-specialization and lack of philosophical education in natural science university curricula. The only reason why we know so much more than centuries ago is time, much larger number of scientists, and much more resources pumped into science, which resulted in an explosion of knowledge acquired by dumber scientists.

A Logical Christmas Message

This is the message of Christmas! The Bible refers to Jesus as “The Logos” and implies that not only is Jesus God, but also gives us some insight into the Trinity. From a theological perspective, this passage of scripture carries much weight! Moreover, from a philosophical and logical perspective this passage not only makes sense, but we even have scientific data supporting this scripture.

This isn’t the first time Chick-fil-A has opened on a Sunday. The restaurant opened its doors in 2016 after a mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando. Years earlier Dan Cathy, Truett Cathy’s son and the current owner of Chick-fil-A, sparked a scandal when he publicly stated that he and the business were opposed to gay marriage. His statements led to a years-long publicity nightmare for the business, though revenues remained strong throughout.

Should Evangelicals Evolve on Homosexuality?

While the latter view is clearly more palatable to evangelicals than the former, Rosaria disagrees with both. She points out that Vines’s view leads to not inheriting the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:9–10). But she happily acknowledges, “Where there is life, there is hope. So we are not making a condemnation on [Vines’s] life. But we are making a discerning comment on his state before God. And we are doing that not because we are looking into his soul, but because we are looking into the pages of the book he has written and we are comparing it to the book of the Bible.”

43 Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Keeping the Faith | Think Christian

The term “faithful presence” comes from James Davison Hunter’s influential To Change the World . More pertinent to The Last Jedi , however, is a critique of that book by Greg Forster, a visiting assistant professor of faith and culture at Trinity International University. Forster has written , “Of course the world is corrupt and falling apart. The gospel calls us to love it and serve it anyway. We must have what Tom Nelson calls hopeful realism—neither closing our eyes to the world’s evil nor forgetting that a higher power, one our eyes can’t see, is already at work, all around us and also within us." Living within this tension, with the faithful understanding that there is a power greater than us, is the calling for both the Jedi and the Christian.

Did Jesus Diminish His Divine Power to Become Human?

The question comes from Matthew in Vienna, the capital of Austria. “Dear Pastor John, thank you for all your work over the years in ministry. My small group recently considered the subject of Jesus’s divinity and humanity. I looked through Desiring God’s resources and found a sermon that you delivered way back in 1981. In that sermon on Luke 2:52 you state, ‘Our text has important implications for understanding the divinity of Christ. It helps us understand what Paul meant when he said, “Though he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant” (Philippians 2:6–7). One of the things Christ emptied himself of was omniscience.’ Later, regarding the attributes of God, you said, ‘They were his potentially, and thus he was God; but he surrendered their use absolutely, and so he was man.’ My question is, how do you now understand Philippians 2:6–8 and Luke 2:52? Do these texts really necessitate that some attributes of the eternal divine nature of Jesus must have been given up at his incarnation?”

The secret backstory of how Obama let Hezbollah off the hook

The administration’s eagerness for an Iran deal was broadcast through so many channels, task force members say, that political appointees and career officials at key agencies like Justice, State and the National Security Council felt unspoken pressure to view the task force’s efforts with skepticism. One former senior Justice Department official confirmed to POLITICO that some adverse decisions might have been influenced by an informal multi-agency Iran working group that “assessed the potential impact” of criminal investigations and prosecutions on the nuclear negotiations.

We choose not to celebrate, as does our church family. It sets us apart, from not only the secular world, but also the Christian world. It has turned out to be a lonely time of the year, but since it's a conviction, I doubt that we will ever change.

What Suffering People Wish You Would Do at Christmas

Our friends who are reeling from loss this holiday may not be able to do things they did in years past. Since it may be harder to buy gifts, they may not participate in the usual gift-giving. Social events may be too emotionally or physically demanding to attend. Include your friends and offer to go with them to functions, but be understanding if they cancel at the last minute. Suffering people often don’t know what they can do until right before the event.
