Are Your Kids Ready for Apologetics?

My children are still young, so it’s easy to spend little time thinking about teaching them apologetics. We get lost in the hustle and craziness of homework and baseball and tests and “Do I have any clean socks?”, and well, just getting dinner on the table each night is a challenge. Yet as they are getting older, I want to teach them the Biblical truths that will equip them to withstand spiritual attacks and answer the tough questions that they might someday face from their peers.

What Do the Non-Canonical Gospels Say About Jesus - Part 1 (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner begins to examine the ancient non-canonical writings to see what they say about Jesus. Are these documents alternate eyewitness accounts? Do they express the truth about Jesus, lost over the centuries? Are there any good reasons for us to accept what they say about Jesus? Is there anything TRUE we can learn from them?

Does the Multiverse Discount Design? Quick Response.

Distinguished philosopher Robin Collins provides multiple reasons for God’s existence in the context of multiverse theory. First, we should prefer the hypothesis that naturally flows from the evidence, and for which we have independent confirmation. As Collins explains, we already know that minds can produce objects, like Swiss watches, that are fine-tuned. Therefore, positing God as the best explanation fits what we already observe minds can do.

From Bethlehem in the Majesty of the Name of the Lord

Micah is a hard prophet to understand because the book alternates back and forth between threats of doom and promises of hope. It is hard to figure out what situations he is referring to and how the hope and doom relate to each other. Probably the reason the book is arranged like this is to make the point that where God and his people are concerned, there is always hope, even in the darkest catastrophe. So Micah mingles gloom and glory through his book. We will take a look at the gloom first and then focus in on his great promise about the Messiah who will come from Bethlehem in the majesty of the name of the Lord.

An Introduction to the Cosmological Argument

Apologetics, or defending the faith, is something every Christian should be involved in ( 1 Pet. 3:15 ). While we’ve written extensively on apologetics on 1st Century Faith Today, we have long neglected descriptions of foundational concepts. We are beginning our crash course in apologetics by examining one of the “Big Three” apologetic arguments: the cosmological argument.

17 An Introduction to the Moral Argument - 1st Century Faith Today

Another strength of this argument has to do with the problem of evil. The problem of evil is often cited by skeptics to prove the nonexistence of God. It is often proposed that if an all-good, all-powerful God existed, then evil would not. However, the fact that we can call anything “evil” proves that there is an objective standard by which we can discern evil or good. If there are acts which are objectively good or evil, then there must be an objective standard. If there is an objective moral standard there must be a giver of this objective moral standard. With the moral argument, it can be shown that even the existence of evil, contrary to popular belief,  proves that there is a God.

Product Description Cultural pressure is increasing, especially on our kids. But even in a world of addictions, ever-present screens, and gender-identity questions, youth can have clarity and confidence. We must help them attain it. In this honest and practical guide for parents and Christian leaders, John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle will enable you to help your kids influence the culture, rather than let the culture change them. We don’t have to lose the next generation to culture. In this practical guide, John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle explore questions including: What unseen undercurrents are shaping twenty-first-century youth culture? Why do so many kids struggle with identity? How do we talk to kids about same-sex marriage and transgenderism? How can leaders steer kids away from substance abuse and other addictions? How can we ground students in the biblical story and empower them to change the world? With biblical clarity, this is the practical go-to manual to equip kids to rise above the culture.

Common Logical Fallacies and Examples from Social Media

I was invited to have a chat with an atheist named Tony Murphy on social media who calls himself Hackenslash. When I asked him for the topic that he was interested in discussing, he sent me a meme that indicated he wanted to discuss (my) logical fallacies. A logical fallacy is a flaw in reasoning. The intention of this blog is to define some of the most common fallacies and to offer examples in an attempt to reduce their prevalence.

Australian Gov't Recommends Making Celibacy Optional for Catholic Priests to Protect Children

"All Catholic religious institutes in Australia, in consultation with their international leadership and the Holy See as required, should implement measures to address the risks of harm to children and the potential psychological and sexual dysfunction associated with a celibate rule of religious life. This should include consideration of whether and how existing models of religious life could be modified to facilitate alternative forms of association, shorter terms of celibate commitment, and/or voluntary celibacy (where that is consistent with the form of association that has been chosen)," the commission said in its final report .

27 Star Wars: Episode III – False Family Ties | Think Christian

Anakin turns next to Emperor Palpatine for advice. Serpent that he is, Palpatine tells Anakin that the Sith possess the knowledge of how to transcend death and save Padme’s life. Of course, this is a sinuous lie. Darth Sidious wants the powerful Anakin at his side, and he can’t have Anakin’s loyalties split between his destiny and his desire any more than the Jedi can. Eventually Anakin uncovers Palpatine’s true nature, but the temptation of power is still strong. In the movie’s climax, as the Jedi are descending upon the Emperor, Anakin broods over his options: be true to his calling, forget Padme and let the Jedi stop Palpatine or abandon his Jedi code, join the Sith and hope to live a long, happy life with his love.

Contradictions: Should Christians Pray in Public or Not?

And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words. Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. ( Matthew 6:5–8 )

Disagreement is not expressing one’s disapproval of something or expressing that something makes you feel bad or icky. To really disagree with someone’s idea or opinion, you must first understand that idea or opinion. When Socrates tells you that a good life is better than a life in exile you can neither agree nor disagree with that claim without first understanding what he means by “good life” and why he thinks running away from Athens would be unjust. Similarly, if someone expresses a view about abortion, and you do not first take the time to understand what the view is and why the person thinks the view is true, then you cannot disagree with the view, much less reason with that person. You might take offense. You might feel bad that someone holds that view. But you are not reasoning unless you are engaging the merits of the argument, just as Socrates engaged with Crito’s argument that he should flee from Athens.

Know When to Walk Away

I highly doubt I could pull off a digital detox without first deleting the social media apps from my phone and laptop. Some users hide the buttons into a buried folder. I find it best to get rid of them altogether (I can re-install them in about fifteen minutes). Out of the range of my mouse pointer and click-finger, the apps are, for me, rendered inaccessible. And when Instagram is not immediately accessible, for example, my phone habits change drastically.
