Here’s How You Can Help Aleppo Right Now

The battle for Aleppo is over, and it left the Syrian city completely devastated. As of this morning, artillery “shelling” continued which is delaying the evacuation of millions. More details about the state of the city are rolling in every hour, but what we do know is that people there are facing what experts are calling one of the greatest humanitarian crisis of this generation. And people, especially Christians, can’t ignore it. Here are 4 organizations doing work in Aleppo worth supporting. ###Preemptive Love The Iraq-based organization is focusing their work on helping families fleeing violence in Aleppo. Check out this update from Preemptive Love’s founder, Jeremy Courtney: Click here to give. ###World Vision World Vision, the largest faith-based charity in the world has been helping refugees from Syria for a long time, with a special emphasis on children and food. On their site, they posted this chilling statement: “the situation in Aleppo city is the most dire they have ever seen it. World Food Program food aid has completely run out for about 250,000 people trapped in besieged eastern Aleppo.” Click here to give. ###World Relief World Relief is another organization doing impressive work in and around Aleppo. Their work centers around “providing non-temporary shelters, hygiene items, and trauma therapy to displaced Syrian and Iraqi refugee families, as well as sponsoring child-friendly spaces for mothers and children,” according to their website. Click here to give. ###White Helmets If you haven’t heard about them yet, the White Helmets represent one of the most inspiring developments of the year. The chilling Netflix documentary, White Helmets, tells their story. Check out the trailer: The White Helmets are a volunteer group that runs into harrowing crisis areas in Syria to help victims of the violence. Click here to give to the group.

Religious Freedom and SOGI Laws

Today, I’ve joined with Alan Sears of the Alliance Defending Freedom and an amazing list of about 80 other Christian leaders to sign a statement clarifying where we stand on these troubling SOGI laws. The statement is very clear: SOGI laws threaten the freedoms of Americans to speak, teach, and live out their deeply held convictions in public life without fear of lawsuits or government coercion.

What to Do When Your Friend Asks for Money

Should you lend money to a friend? This is not a question I can answer for you. But we do know the One who can. When we take these situations before the Lord and ask, “What is best?” the Lord will guide and direct us. We can prayerfully think about an outright gift, a loan or maybe what is best is prayer and encouragement. We can be sensitive to the spirit’s leading and also weigh our sense of judgment with the need being presented.

Why Is God to Be Praised? | Reasonable Faith

The logic of this is valid, and it seems to me that if we say God's goodness flows from his essential nature, then it's hard to deny the deterministic elements of it. I've been a Christian for over 20 years, and a student of your work for the last 5 years. It's my understanding that God's goodness is the primary reason for which He is worthy of praise. So what am I missing here? Is premise one false because God's goodness is demonstrated by His miraculous directing and working in human history to bring about a plan of redemption for such a stiff-necked people such as us, which can only be explained by acts of His will?

9
The Church Must Pay Attention to Global Populist Movements

I pray for our President-elect because I know God can use him for good. But the Church needs to stop finding its identity in politics and people. We need to trust in God. We need to invest our time and resources in growing relationships, not growing political standing and influence. We need to seek to influence the hearts of those around us, not the politics around them. We need Jesus to change us; we don't need to change laws. We need to look at ourselves hard, and ask what we should be doing for others; not what can others do for us. How can we love God more? How can we love others more?

Love Might Win the Wayward in Your Life

By doing positive good — responding with godly, rugged love — we overcome the evil that has been done. But if things deteriorate, we need to be ready for the painful reality that love may require letting a prodigal go. In the heart-breaking act of letting go, our intent is not to punish the person or to retaliate for what they have done to us. We must not meet evil with evil. When we do, everyone loses, and no one gets loved.

Why Do Christians Get So Many Christmas Story Details Wrong?

Christians are prone to believe things that are familiar, even if the familiar is not true. The story of Christmas is a perfect example. Like barnacles on a whale’s underbelly, the story of Christ’s birth has picked up many foreign details that aren’t part of the original story. Some of these details are innocent and rooted in tradition; others are significant aberrations to the Christmas story, making December 25 one of the most syncretistic events on the Christian calendar.

Jesus Is Fully Human

Throughout the Gospels, Jesus clearly displays human emotions. Here it begins to get a little more difficult for us. When Jesus heard the centurion’s words of faith, “he marveled” (Matthew 8:10). He says in Matthew 26:38 that his “soul is very sorrowful, even to death.” In John 11:33–35, Jesus is “deeply moved in his spirit and greatly troubled,” and even weeps. John 12:27 says, “Now is my soul troubled,” and in John 13:21, he is “troubled in his spirit.” The author to the Hebrews writes that “Jesus offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears” (Hebrews 5:7).

Hand out two pieces of paper to each person in the group. Say the Lord’s Prayer together. When it comes to the line ‘forgive us our sins’, take a moment of quiet to each write on one of the pieces of paper the things for which you are asking God’s forgiveness. Then gather the papers in a large saucepan, light a match and let the papers burn. If you have an open fireplace, burn that the papers there. As you say the line ‘as we forgive those who sin against us’, take Your second piece of paper and write down the names of those you need to forgive. Ask for God’s help to forgive these people, and again gather the papers and burn them. Then continue saying the rest of the Lord’s Prayer together.

How to Respond to the "That's Just Your Interpretation" Objection

You’ve seen this happen before right? Once someone throws out the “that’s just your interpretation” line, the conversation comes to a screeching halt. Again, this usually happens when a moral or religious topic is brought up like “abortion is wrong” or “Jesus is the only way of salvation.” Perhaps you have found yourself in a conversation like that and thought you were making progress only to be dismissed with a slogan. What do you do?

5 Reasons You Should Get Apologetics Training

1. Apologetics Will Help You Serve the Church. As my friend Tom Gilson wrote in his article for A New Kind of Apologist, one key feature of apologetics is to be a servant for the church. There is a huge need for some Christians in the church to have formal training on how to best answer some of the toughest questions about God, the Bible, evil and more. I often encourage my Biola M.A. students to offer to serve their pastor by doing research for sermons, being available to counsel young people with difficult questions, and being willing to offer apologetics classes for people in the church. The first reason to get formal apologetics training is to better serve the local church. Just as every church needs a teaching pastor, worship leader, and children’s director, every church needs a trained apologist .

What is the Best Evidence for Intelligent Design? Interview with Brian Johnson.

The second is a process called DNA error correction (aka, DNA repair). This process is mind-boggling and is currently at work in your body as you read this. Your body is creating new DNA at this moment in a process known as DNA Replication. During this process the DNA double helix is split in two, kind of like a zipper on a coat. As you unzip your coat you then have two sides of that zipper. Now pretend that the 'teeth' of the zipper on one side of the coat are each represented by a nucleotide letter of either a, c, t, or g. During the replication process a brand new set of 'teeth' are joined to the existing set of 'teeth' much the same way as when you zip the coat up and the two set of 'teeth' are joined together to seal the coat. If during this process an incorrect nucleotide is put down an error correcting process catches the error, stops the process, plucks out the wrong nucleotide, inserts the correct nucleotide, and then allows the replication process to continue. Describing this process as mind-blowing is actually an understatement.

When Darkness Falls at Christmas

We too are caught in the cosmic crossfire of Christmas. We experience both “joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory” (1 Peter 1:8), as well as burdens so great we despair of life itself (2 Corinthians 1:8). Both are beyond our powers to comprehend because there is so much more going on in reality than we can yet understand.

Atheist gets her PhD in astronomy and astrophysics and finds evidence for God

I was born in the U.S., but grew up in Canada. My parents were socialists and political activists who thought British Columbia would be a better place for us to live, since it had the only socialist government in North America at the time. My parents were also atheists, though they eschewed that label in favor of “agnostic.” They were kind, loving, and moral, but religion played no part in my life. Instead, my childhood revolved around education, particularly science. I remember how important it was to my parents that my brother and I did well in school.

My Top 10 Theology Stories of 2016

You’ll see in this list a theme of fear and loathing vs. faith and love. As we see our neighbors mediated through our reading, watching, and listening we’re tempted to fear and loathe them, because someone’s paying to keep our attention. And the easiest way to keep that attention is through anger and fear. But I’ve noticed in my church and community I’m more likely to see my neighbors, even when we disagree, as people who can teach me, as people made in the image of God, as people who need the gospel of Jesus Christ. Locally I know all about our serious problems. But I’m stubbornly optimistic about God’s plan. Why do I struggle, then, to see God at work in stories I only know from a distance? Please join me in prayer that bring good from what appears to be evil.

Jurors are encouraged to test witnesses in these four ways, and if the witnesses “measure up,” jurors are instructed to accept their testimony as reliable. Even if a juror doesn’t like a particular witness, they’re told to disregard their personal feelings if the witness passes the aforementioned test.

God Will Fulfill His Purpose for You

“He does all that he pleases,” “no purpose of [his] can be thwarted,” and “none can stay his hand” (Psalm 115:3; Job 42:2; Daniel 4:35) — these words about God are assurances that he will complete what he began in us (Philippians 1:6). Nothing can separate us from his love for us in Christ (Romans 8:39), and nothing can distract the simplest of circumstances from hitting the target of our transformation. There’s no stalling with God. He doesn’t procrastinate. Even if we are innocently obtuse to his designs right now, God’s providence is blaring full-throttle toward our Christlikeness, and his glory.

Creation: From, Through, and By the Triune God

He asked: “Which specific person in the Godhead created the world?” I have been asked thousands of questions over the last 20 years of teaching and lecturing in both churches and colleges, but that was the first time anyone ever asked me that particular question. I appreciated the specificity of the query and how it related to the unique Triune nature of God.

‘La La Land’ Dances Between Love and Calling

In the movie, Mia (Emma Stone) and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) sing and dance their way into a charming romance. They trade banter, dance through a flirty scene worthy of its classic Fred and Ginger lineage, and—thanks to the movie’s heightened reality—literally float among the stars. Rolling Stone ’s Peter Travers calls it “the movie of the year,” Rotten Tomatoes has the critics’ consensus at 95 percent, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about this movie since I saw it.

Your Wounds Do Not Define You

Each time we choose to see ourselves through the lens of our wounds, we refuse the opportunity to look at ourselves through God’s eyes. No one else has the authority to define who you are. He created you. He says that you are made in his image (Genesis 1:27), redeemed and restored because of Christ (Galatians 4:4–5), co-heirs along with Christ (Romans 8:17), dearly loved (Romans 5:8), and valued beyond measure (Matthew 10:29–31). Whatever your story, the Lord of heaven and earth longs for you to see yourself in that light.

Reasons To Believe : An Inordinate Fondness

If not for the fossil record, people alive today would have no idea of the vast history of life on Earth. The fossil record gives an incomplete and often imperfect view of life's distant past, much of which is lost forever. Still, this record provides enough of a window to reveal a menagerie of unusual and interesting animals. Why did the Creator make such a diverse array of creatures at differing points in Earth's history? Could it be that one of the reasons God created so many remarkable animals-like the dinosaurs, creatures that fascinate children and paleontologists alike-was for His amusement?

Case-Making 101: How does the Bible compare to other ancient documents?

Last week we looked at the evidence for the reliability of the Bible with the early Church’s canonization process that demonstrates we can be certain that we have the right books, contrary to cultural spin. We also looked at many reasons Christians reject the Apocrypha and Gnostic books with an emphasis on the dating of those writings. With that in mind it is also important to look at other variables scholars consider when reviewing ancient documents like the Bible, one of the most important is called “textual criticism:”

The Breath of Life: Should Christians Agree to Ventilator Support?

When faced with the heart-wrenching challenges of modern medicine, we take refuge in the God who knows us (Psalm 139:1–4). We revel in the gift of his word, which itself is God-breathed (2 Timothy 3:16). While our days in this world vanish on the wind (Psalm 39:5), his breath unseats mountains and weaves galaxies (Psalm 18:15; 33:6). Even if we struggle for air, he is with us. He loves us, and he sent his Son to die for us so that “whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s” (Romans 14:8).

50
Should we expect to know what God's reason is for allowing evil and suffering?

The problem of evil is no doubt the most serious challenge to belief in God. Even religious believers find it troubling that evil exists in the world—and so much evil! It is puzzling, to say the least, that an all-powerful, absolutely good being would allow evil to exist in his creation. And yet it does. Evil and suffering exist and they are often overwhelming in their magnitude.
