Engaging Muslims Part 2: Five Common Objections - NAMB

This post gives a brief overview of five of the most common objections to Christianity that we hear from our Muslim friends. Though I cannot give an exhaustive treatment of these topics, I do want to offer some Bible passages to provide natural access points through which to invite our Muslim friends into a deeper engagement with the Christian message in the Bible.

Where Evangelicals Fall on Roy Moore vs. Trump, Lauer, Franken, and Six More Men

While they don’t have a vote in Tuesday’s state election, evangelicals at a national level feel strongly about keeping Moore from holding office. According to Politico/Morning Consult polls (which each offer a multiethnic sample of about 600 self-identified evangelicals), half believe that if Moore wins the election, he should be expelled from Congress, while only a quarter believe Congress should seat him. Fewer than half of Republicans and Trump voters (44%) say the same. (Already, two of the other embattled politicians in that survey, Al Franken and Conyers, have resigned prior to congressional investigations.)

Apologetics: How Long Was the Canon in Question?

The suggestion continues to be made by popular skeptics that the New Testament canon was in flux for hundreds of years. One scholar claims that no one came up with “a definitive list of books to be included in the canon that matched our list today” until “the famous Athanasian letter of 367 C.E. Even the powerful Athanasius could not settle the issue once and for all.” It’s true that, in the year 367, Athanasius of Alexandria did write a letter in which he listed the same twenty-seven books that appear in the New Testament today.

Why Do So Many Christians Dismiss Apologetics?

Not being engaged in evangelism . Motivated by my friend Brett Kunkle, I have been taking high school students on apologetics mission trips for the past few years. Inevitably, whenever we meet up with atheists, Mormons, student freethinking groups, Unitarian Universalists or people of other faiths, students become highly motivated to study apologetics. Students often study theology and apologetics late into the evening getting prepared for the next day! In my experience, nothing motivates Christians to care about apologetics more than evangelism and spiritual conversations. After all, once you start sharing your faith, people will inevitably have questions about the Bible, evil, evolution, and more.

Top 5 rookie pastor mistakes — Southern Equip

Though it may seem counterintuitive, the best strategy for any pastor assuming a new ministry is to lower expectations of the church but raise expectations of himself. In other words, instead of having a list of things the church must do, he should have a list of actions he must take. His efforts should focus on preaching well, loving his people, winning the lost, visiting people in their jobs and homes, and inviting members into his. People will more readily follow a man who works hard and loves them. There is no shortcut to credibility, but there is a direct route.

Case-Making 101: The Christian Worldview and the problem of doubt, evil and suffering

What do you do when you have questions and doubts about God or your faith? Questions can be good if it moves us forward to finding answers. I had a lot of questions about Christianity and I did not do anything about that for years except to become a doubtful skeptic. Doubt because of unanswered questions can be a terrible thing if it causes us to settle into apathy or worse.

20 The Dysfunctional Idolatry of The Meyerowitz Stories | Think Christian

Another turning point in the film occurs when a head injury lands Harold in the hospital and all three siblings find themselves forced to share one another’s company. It’s a familiar trope in this kind of comedy—the wounded father who draws all the wandering family members back to the home like some kind of filial magnet. But Baumbach uses it to stunning effect, playing his superb cast off of one another. Sandler turns in one of his finest performances, capturing Danny’s defeated mien with tragic aplomb. Stiller shines as the golden boy whose elevated status is more of an ideal than a reality, while Elizabeth Marvel is heartbreaking as the neglected daughter whose aloof demeanor has a lot more to do with deep-seated trauma than it does with any kind of natural eccentricity. Towering over them all his Harold, portrayed with imperious panache by Hoffman.

What Should Christian Parents Tell Their Children About Santa?

Since Christian parents also teach their children that Jesus is a real person who did perform real miracles, does see you when your sleeping and knows when you’re awake, and really keeps a list of who gets an eternal gift or not, our fear is that if we teach them fanciful, make-believe stories as truth, it could erode confidence in our truthfulness where it really matters. So, we distinguish between lies, secrets, surprises, and pretend for our kids. We ask them not to tell lies or keep secrets, but do teach them that some surprises (like gift-giving) and pretending (like dressing up) can be fun and should be encouraged. We tell them the truth and encourage them to have fun watching Christmas shows on television and even sitting on Santa’s lap for a holiday photo if they so desire. For parents of younger children wanting them to learn the real story of Santa Claus the Veggie Tales movie Saint Nicholas is a good choice.

Do You Pray Like the Devil?

So, for example, when clarifying what it means to have saving faith, James says, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe — and shudder!” (James 2:19). In other words, saving faith has to be more than what the demons can do. So, take note of that, and find out what it is that they can do. Never settle for a definition of “faith” that requires only what the devil can do.

Rapid Response: I Don't Believe the Gospels Were Written By Eyewitnesses

In our Rapid Response series, we tackle common concerns about (and objections to) the Christian worldview by providing short, conversational responses. These posts are designed to model what our answers might look like in a one-on-one setting, while talking to a friend or family member. What would you say if someone said, “I don’t trust the Gospels because I don’t believe they were written by eyewitnesses.” Here is a conversational example of how I recently responded to this objection:

Should Christians Reject the Soul for Biblical Reasons?

It seems, then, that Jocelyn is more concerned about whether Scripture teaches that humans have souls. He thinks that the Bible does not teach or imply that we have souls. How does he arrive at this conclusion? Simply by analysing the various meanings of the Hebrew and Greek words for “soul” and “spirit”. The problem with this approach is that is confuses words with concepts. The same concept may be expressed in various ways with various words. For example, the concept of the Trinity is expressed in the Bible even though the Bible does not use the exact words “the Trinity”. Hence, we are not merely interested in the meaning of the word for “spirit” but we are mainly interested in whether the concept of dualism is explicit or implicit in Scripture.

Is Football Too Violent for Christians?

The intensity of football is one of the main reasons it is so fun and formative, and the potential danger is why it is so intense. All those collisions do take a physical toll, and I think it is wise to improve the rules and equipment so it cuts down on injuries. But football is a violent game, and although injury is an unavoidable part of it, injury is not the goal (this cannot be said of professional boxing, where causing a brain contusion is the supreme goal). For thousands and thousands of young men like me, football taught us to be better men, and even to be better Christians. Like climbing Mount Everest, I think it’s worth the risk.

Love to Forget Yourself: How Singing Weakens Pride

Being awed at the majesty of God swallows up self-absorption. As John Piper has said, no one walks away from the Grand Canyon with a bigger view of himself. It was this insight — that life isn’t about me — that I found so liberating when I read Don’t Waste Your Life in college. It was a Copernican revolution in my soul. With the glory of God at the center, I began learning what life was for and how it was to be lived. When we sing to God about his glory, we see more of how gloriously big he really is, and we become joyfully small again.

The First Question to Ask of an Ancient Holy Book: Is It Ancient? | Cold Case Christianity

The test of antiquity was incredibly important to me as a skeptic examining the claims of scripture for the first time. As I became interested in Christianity, my Mormon family encouraged me to examine Mormonism as well. I read the entire Book of Mormon before I completed the Old and New Testament. I wanted to determine the “antiquity” of the Gospels and the Book of Mormon before I could examine the question of “divinity”. I needed to know if the New Testament gospels were written early enough to have been written by eyewitnesses who were actually present to observe what was recorded in these accounts. Similarly, I needed to know if the Book of Mormon was an accurate account of the history of the American continent from 600BC to 400AD (as it claims). My first investigation was centered on the foundational question: Are these ancient holy books truly ancient?

An Anti-Communist For Roy Moore

I don’t see how anyone who takes seriously the abortion issue could vote against Roy Moore or Trump. That’s not to mention all the ways in which the libertarian and Christian values of the past are being lynched by an intellectual elite. In Europe, freedom of speech is long gone and a pastor was arrested in Sweden for defending Saint Paul’s views on adultery. Not only that but newspapers had the gall to refer to Sweden as a country famous for its ‘uncompromising’ devotion to freedom of speech. Sometimes you just want to go in the garage and start the motor but that would be bad faith. As for Roy Moore I think he should take a polygraph carefully limited to the two accusations of rape/assault. Until he proves himself innocent there will be suspicions of guilt. Nonetheless it seems clear to me that Nelson is lying and the Washington Post is at the very least guilty of journalistic malfeasance for either not vetting her story or suppressing the findings to slander Moore. As for Corfman, by her own testimony she’s “no angel” and the rule that “women never lie about rape” is waived whenever the accused is an official of the IMF, while if the accused is a legendary president or civil rights hero or famous director or household-word rock star the credible accusation is brushed aside with ‘boys will be boys.
