The Most Valuable Aim of Apologetics

Exodus 3 narrates the well-known account of God’s revealing Himself to Moses in the burning bush and commissioning him to tell Pharaoh to release the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. But that was only part of Moses’ mission. The other task to which the Lord called Moses was to address the Israelites. He was to command the Israelites in the name of God to engage in the largest strike in history. In absolute defiance of the power and authority of Pharaoh, they were to leave Egypt and go out to the desert to worship God at His mountain. And, of course, these events ended in the exodus.

Should Christians Reject the Soul for Biblical Reasons?

It seems, then, that Jocelyn is more concerned about whether Scripture teaches that humans have souls. He thinks that the Bible does not teach or imply that we have souls. How does he arrive at this conclusion? Simply by analysing the various meanings of the Hebrew and Greek words for “soul” and “spirit”. The problem with this approach is that is confuses words with concepts. The same concept may be expressed in various ways with various words. For example, the concept of the Trinity is expressed in the Bible even though the Bible does not use the exact words “the Trinity”. Hence, we are not merely interested in the meaning of the word for “spirit” but we are mainly interested in whether the concept of dualism is explicit or implicit in Scripture.

Top 5 rookie pastor mistakes — Southern Equip

Though it may seem counterintuitive, the best strategy for any pastor assuming a new ministry is to lower expectations of the church but raise expectations of himself. In other words, instead of having a list of things the church must do, he should have a list of actions he must take. His efforts should focus on preaching well, loving his people, winning the lost, visiting people in their jobs and homes, and inviting members into his. People will more readily follow a man who works hard and loves them. There is no shortcut to credibility, but there is a direct route.

Rapid Response: I Don't Believe the Gospels Were Written By Eyewitnesses

In our Rapid Response series, we tackle common concerns about (and objections to) the Christian worldview by providing short, conversational responses. These posts are designed to model what our answers might look like in a one-on-one setting, while talking to a friend or family member. What would you say if someone said, “I don’t trust the Gospels because I don’t believe they were written by eyewitnesses.” Here is a conversational example of how I recently responded to this objection:

Happiness Can Betray You: The Judas in “Christian” Joy

What about your communion with God has been sweet in this season? Have you been increasingly led to him in his word? Have you been much more consistent in kneeling before him in prayer? Have you seen lusts that displease him replaced with good works and love for neighbor? Are these marks of the delightful season? There is no doubting that your wallet is full, a lovely wife awaits you at home, and your anxieties over work have fled — but what of Jesus Christ?

Is Football Too Violent for Christians?

The intensity of football is one of the main reasons it is so fun and formative, and the potential danger is why it is so intense. All those collisions do take a physical toll, and I think it is wise to improve the rules and equipment so it cuts down on injuries. But football is a violent game, and although injury is an unavoidable part of it, injury is not the goal (this cannot be said of professional boxing, where causing a brain contusion is the supreme goal). For thousands and thousands of young men like me, football taught us to be better men, and even to be better Christians. Like climbing Mount Everest, I think it’s worth the risk.

Love to Forget Yourself: How Singing Weakens Pride

Being awed at the majesty of God swallows up self-absorption. As John Piper has said, no one walks away from the Grand Canyon with a bigger view of himself. It was this insight — that life isn’t about me — that I found so liberating when I read Don’t Waste Your Life in college. It was a Copernican revolution in my soul. With the glory of God at the center, I began learning what life was for and how it was to be lived. When we sing to God about his glory, we see more of how gloriously big he really is, and we become joyfully small again.

No, Mehdi Hasan, ‘Values Voters’ Have Not Lost Their Values | The Stream

There’s also no question that polling by the Public Religion Research Institute seems to confirm a shift in evangelical thinking. As Hasan notes, “In 2011, fewer than one in three white evangelical Protestants said an elected official could behave ethically in their public life, if they had committed moral transgressions in their private life. Yet just five years later, in 2016, more than seven in ten white evangelical Protestants said a politician’s personal morality did not matter to them.”

Do You Pray Like the Devil?

So, for example, when clarifying what it means to have saving faith, James says, “You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe — and shudder!” (James 2:19). In other words, saving faith has to be more than what the demons can do. So, take note of that, and find out what it is that they can do. Never settle for a definition of “faith” that requires only what the devil can do.

Sex Against God: Three Ways the World Abuses the Gift

Sex was created for man and woman within the context of marriage (Genesis 2:24). Any departure from that design tarnishes the great gift that God bestowed on man. Sex outside of the bounds of God’s design will always leave us wanting. We’ll seek pleasure in different ways and crave more of it until we have consumed ourselves and those around us. Defying God’s design for sex will always leave one unfulfilled and drives a person to seek pleasure and fulfillment by other means.

Four Ways the Earth Is Fine-Tuned for Life

The just so appearance of “fine-tuning” in our universe is rather uncontroversial amongst scientists and cosmologists. Even Paul Davies (who is agnostic when it comes to the notion of a Divine Designer) readily stipulates, “Everyone agrees that the universe looks as if it was designed for life.” The foundational, regional and locational conditions of our universe, solar system and planet are delicately balanced and finely calibrated. The slightest modification of these conditions would be disastrous for life. The delicate requirements for the existence of galaxies, star systems, and planets capable of supporting “intelligent observers” are incredibly fragile. In my book, God’s Crime Scene , I describe the nature of foundational , regional and locational conditions in the context of a crime scene I investigated many years ago. The evidence I observed in these layers led me to conclude an external suspect had tampered with the scene to cause a death . In a similar way, it appears the layered conditions of the universe have been “tampered with” to cause the emergence of life .

Being A Good Apologist Is More Than Knowing The Right Answers

1 Peter 3:15 says to "Always be ready to give a defense to anyone who asks you to give a reason for the hope that you have, yet do so with gentleness and respect" and 2 Corinthians 10:5 says "We demolish argument and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ." These two verses are the primary verses that make Christian Apologetics a precedent for the follower of Christ. We are to give the unbelievers reasons to believe Christianity is true and we are to demolish every argument that tries to show it isn't. However, being a good apologist is more than just knowing the right answers to peoples' objections and questions, and knowing how to make a case for Christianity. To be a good apologist, you must know more than "If this person says X, then I'll respond with Y". Giving a defense to anyone who asks is not like giving the answer to a mathematical equation.

Why is Contending for the Faith Necessary?

Jude expresses great concern with these words: “I found it necessary to write and exhort you to contend for the faith that was delivered to the saints once for all” (v. 3b). He places on hold his plans to write about the common salvation grounded in the person and work of Christ in order to address an urgent matter. “Circumstances had arisen that demanded immediate action, thus presenting an emergency situation. Jude addressed himself to a recognized problem, and exhorted the believers to respond with positive determination.”

Inconsistencies In The Gospels Prove Their Veracity

“Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word, it seemed fitting for me as well, having investigated everything carefully from the beginning, to write it out in consecutive order, most excellent, Theophilus; so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught.”

What Is the ‘Sin Not Leading to Death’ in 1 John 5?

The reason I put it like that is because of what 1 John 1:9 says and what Hebrews 12:16 says. So 1 John 1:9 says, “If we confess our sins” — he doesn’t specify any particular kind — “he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” So that’s a very sweeping and glorious and wonderful and precious promise. If you can confess your sin authentically, agree with God that it is sin and that it stinks, hate it, turn from it, and fight against it, you will be forgiven.

Intelligent Design and the Advancement of Science | Evolution News

A little-known fact about intelligent design is that the majority of it scientists already perform their work alongside colleagues with differing views. And they do so peacefully. Typically this requires great discretion. Sharing thoughts about design in nature indiscreetly risks turning yourself into a target for anti-design zealots. One member of our community, for example, received a postdoc from Harvard in a biology sub-discipline. He mentioned that about one quarter of the postdocs he engaged with were at least sympathetic to design arguments. However, with career concerns in mind, none shared their views in public.

43 The Dysfunctional Idolatry of The Meyerowitz Stories | Think Christian

Another turning point in the film occurs when a head injury lands Harold in the hospital and all three siblings find themselves forced to share one another’s company. It’s a familiar trope in this kind of comedy—the wounded father who draws all the wandering family members back to the home like some kind of filial magnet. But Baumbach uses it to stunning effect, playing his superb cast off of one another. Sandler turns in one of his finest performances, capturing Danny’s defeated mien with tragic aplomb. Stiller shines as the golden boy whose elevated status is more of an ideal than a reality, while Elizabeth Marvel is heartbreaking as the neglected daughter whose aloof demeanor has a lot more to do with deep-seated trauma than it does with any kind of natural eccentricity. Towering over them all his Harold, portrayed with imperious panache by Hoffman.

Was There an Exodus & Conquest? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

Greg, Archaeology can only be supportive to faith. It is vane to seek such a proof in science, especially extraordinary proof. Some things can be proved through science, some things can be proved through witnesses. The Apostles were witnesses of resurrection of Christ. There is not any chemical reaction to repeat at home, in order to prove such a claim. The only way to believe in their claim two thousand years after, is to see Resurrected Christ yourself. Why not? Do I have any chance at all, if I declare myself an atheist or a skeptic? In fact, if I want to have an appointment with Him, I must cover half of the distance, to the place of the appointment, no matter what I declare. The other half is for Him to cover. Until the age of 23 I was an atheist. At that age I went on mount Athos for mountaineering. Because I was boring in the monasteries, I asked for a priest to confess my sins, but my real purpose was to attack to him with my rational arguments to his religious beliefs. But when I met him, I decided to respect him instead, and make an experiment. I decided to confess my sins, in order to see myself if anything will ever change in my life.

May I Split My Giving Between My Church and Another Ministry?

So I think it is a good rule of thumb. Hear those words. I think it is a good rule of thumb to start your giving by tithing to the local church and then giving over and above elsewhere. But that is not a rule or a mandate. I can’t say, “Thus saith the Lord.” It is not a requirement. It simply may be a helpful guideline. And, of course, I know there are wealthy people who can’t begin to tithe to their local church because their tithe would be bigger than the church’s budget. And so there are obviously exceptions like that. But I prefer to put all the emphasis on: Let’s be lavish in our generosity. Let’s be sacrificial in our giving. Let’s be loyal to our local church. And let’s be farseeing in our support for many ministries. I think God will handle the percentages.

Women Teaching Men — How Far Is Too Far?

An externally focused, rule-based approach to women teaching co-ed audiences in the church neither reflects nor honors the beauty of God’s design. God wants us to have a grace-soaked, joyous spirit that delights in honoring headship as a beautiful aspect of his good and wise plan — one that respects and engages men and women as joint-heirs and co-workers who wholeheartedly exercise their gifts together in the service of each other and the advance of the gospel. God is far more concerned that we have the right heart and spirit than that we fall in line with man-made flashpoints.
