Burning Questions

Episode 1: Is There a God? Perhaps the biggest burning question of them all is this one: Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there? That’s a hotly debated question. On the one hand, our culture has recently seen a resurgent atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane and irrational. Yet for all of that, belief in God seems alive and well. Over 90% of people in the world say they do believe in a higher power. The question simply will not go away: Is there a God?

Why seminary can never qualify anyone for ministry

A seminary is an academic institution and awards an academic degree because a student completed a prescribed course of study. Though we do everything possible to make it a spiritual pursuit and to tie it to a knowledge of Christ and a commitment to the local church, an intelligent Buddhist could fake his way through and graduate from a Baptist seminary. If a student chooses to go through the seminary and do only what is required of him academically, he may perform very well in classes and even graduate at the top of his class. Without true connection and accountability to a local body, however, that student is not qualified as a minister of the gospel of Jesus Christ and would not be qualified to lead a church until he has been faithful in serving a church and submitting to the elders (Hebrews 13:17; 1 Peter 5:5). My prediction for such a student would be that he would wipe out in the real world of church life and ministry.

Hardship as preparation for ministry

After an expected graduation with a master of divinity in worship leadership in 2018, Hurley hopes to serve a church as a music minister and pastor. One of the reasons Hurley chose Southern was because of worship professor Joseph R. Crider. Hurley met with Crider and a music student, Devon Kauflin, during a visit to the seminary. Both of these interactions were further factors in their decision to attend Southern Seminary.

Leave Your Poker Face at the Door

One of the things we tell our worship team volunteers is that “bad poker players” make great worship leaders. That’s a bit of a strange sounding analogy, but if you’ve ever lost the remote control and were left watching a poker tournament, you’ll know that part of the skill in that game is concealing emotional excitement or despair. A bad poker player would grin and fluster over the royal flush in her hand, signaling to the opponents, “Watch out! This is a bad bet.” A bad poker player reveals on her face the hope (or lack thereof) in her hands.

Kathryn Jean Lopez - It’s a Miracle!

METAXAS:  Yes, but ironically, it’s not one of the miracle stories in the second half of the book. It’s the story in the first half of the book about what science tells us about the creation of the moon. That has to be the most astounding thing imaginable. And just as astounding is that almost no one knows about it. We’re talking about the Moon, for goodness’ sake! It’s not some obscure and distant asteroid, it’s the glowing disc whose waxing and waning mankind has carefully observed since time immemorial. What science now tells us about how it got there — and about how that affected the creation of the earth — is an outrageous and mind-blowing tale. The question is, why aren’t we teaching this in schools? Why isn’t this on the front page of the  New York Times . Oh, sorry, strike that last question. But you know what I mean. What science is telling us about the creation of the moon makes it sound as though it never ever could just have happened… It all seems “a put-up job,” to quote physicist Fred Hoyle, who gave us the term “Big Bang.” So yes, that one part of my book is what I’m dying for the world to know.

9 Do Young Earth Creationists Advocate Appearance of Age?

There are a number of problem with explanations like this one: first, in the case of the chair, further investigation would demonstrate it is not brand new. After all, antique dealers know the value of chairs which have not been tampered with by refinishing! We are able to discover whether additional layers of paint or finishing have been applied over the surface of a chair; similarly, we are able to discover whether things which initially appear young may indeed be quite old. The analogy itself breaks down. Second, the argument begs the question. After all, apart from YECs, those Christians who are asserting the universe is really billions of years old also claim that the Bible does not limit the age to only a few thousand years. This is the reason the challenge of “apparent age” comes up to begin with! So to turn around and say, no, it’s not deception because the Bible says it is young is to merely assert that which is being challenged.

Pope Francis again demotes conservative cardinal who criticized him

I’m not Catholic, but Burke and Chaput are the two most conservative Catholic leaders in my opinion. As an outsider to the church, I prefer that Catholics try to be as conservative as possible, and not be influenced by the secular culture. I don’t expect them to be Bible-based like evangelical Protestants are, but I expect them to be resistant to the secular culture on things like abortion, gay marriage and the free enterprise system. This is disappointing to me, to go from Benedict to this. Benedict was a Pope I respected, but this Pope… I don’t like who he tries to make friends with.

14 The Right to Die May Become a Duty to Die - Stand to Reason Blog

If physician-assisted suicide is legally available, the right to die may become a duty to die. The hopelessly ill may be subtly pressured to get their dying over with — not only by cost-counting providers but by family members concerned about burdensome bills, impatient for an inheritance, exhausted by care-giving or just anxious to spare a loved one further suffering.

God of War: God of Hope

1) On God’s Communication.  Steve,  I don’t believe you are adequately representing what I said about God communicating. I clearly noted that people can ignore Him even when he communicates clearly. I’m not sure why He becomes pathetic if people hear and do not respond. From your perspective, if a policeman tells a criminal that if he doesn’t stop his activity he will shoot him, and the criminal ignores the warning and gets killed, is the policeman likewise pathetic? 2) On God’s Intervention.  If I understand you correctly, you would like God to continue to intervene until even the smallest of painful or unhappy situations has been mollified. I can’t help but think of what the Savage said to Mustapha Mond in Brave New World: “Nothing costs enough here.”  It sounds like God is simply another way of describing Huxley’s soma: “”There’s always soma to calm your anger, to reconcile you to your enemies, to make you patient and long-suffering. In the past you could only accomplish these things by making a great effort and after years of hard moral training.

Navigating Knowledge: What is Truth?

In our modern, multicultural, rapidly changing world, how can we hold that there is one unchanging eternal truth? Certainly that is not the case in science, where what is written in the textbook may no longer be true by the time it is printed. What is taught as historical truth will differ on two sides of a contested border. Within many of our academic disciplines there are structuralists and functionalists, universalists and variationists, presenting, respectively, prescriptive and descriptive views of truth. Yet often in the church, the words of Tolstoy ring true: questions which have not been solved for centuries receive clear and convincing answers, answers a whole generation of Christians in one country will take as absolute truth. But is it the final word? How can we know? What is the truth?

Dr. Sproul starts this section relating that many critical scholars believe that John chapter 21 does not belong in the canon of scripture and gives his response. He then proceeds to review the text and the disciples unsuccessful fishing trip. These expert fishermen had fished all night and had nothing to show for the effort but Jesus tells them to cast the net on the other side of the boat and they have a huge catch. Once again when Peter finds out it is the Lord on the shore he dove in and started swimming to Jesus. The other disciples bring the boat in and Jesus has the fire ready. Dr. Sproul relates some of the interesting facts about Peter and the fish.
