With the rules of evidence clearly in mind, he examines the case for the existence of God, the reality of dualism, the reliability of the Biblical text, and the deity of Jesus. Along the way we also take a critical look at the nature of the Christian Church in America today. Why are so many young people leaving the church? Why are so many older Christians apathetic and unengaged? Why do so few Christians understand what they believe, and why do even fewer understand why they believe it? Join J. Warner each week as he sorts through the evidence for the Christian Worldview and examines the life of the Church.
Mourning with Sutherland Springs
Several weeks after 9/11 I went with a team of leaders gathered by the American Association of Christian Counselors to New York City to minister to pastors, their spouses, their fellow church leaders and various ministry leaders who’d served their city and congregations after a tidal wave of terror hit their shore. I can still […]

Does It Matter Whether God Exists?
are better than those that do not. The vast majority of people consider this principle to be self-evident because if greater explanatory power and more evidence is not better, then additional evidence and explanatory power add nothing, which means that all evidence and explanatory power are essentially worthless. This leaves us with only our subjective assertions, which most people do not consider to be good enough. For example, as suggested previously, Einstein’s theory about the universe is better than Newton’s theory because it explains more data. (Newton was unaware of most of the data that the special and general theories of relativity account for.) Again, calculus has more explanatory power than algebra and trigonometry because it can account for curves through derivative and integral functions, which algebra and trigonometry cannot do on their own. This applies to virtually every science and social science. The more data a theory or hypothesis explains, the better it is. With respect to life issues, this principle is important because a theory of human personhood that treats a person as a mere individual physical thing (materialism) does not explain the data of persons being self-conscious or having transcendental desires (such as the desire for complete and unconditional Truth, Love, Goodness, Beauty, and Being).

Do Men Owe Women a Special Kind of Care?
Under pressure to shun the question about deeper and differing inclinations that may define the God-given natures of manhood and womanhood, mainstream Western culture has suppressed one of the realities that God put in place for the flourishing of both sexes. While affirming the importance of mutual love, respect, honor, and encouragement between men and women, there is in our day a resistance against the biblical summons for men to show a peculiar care for women that’s different than they would for men — and a strong disincentive to women to feel glad about this.
Case-Making 101: Prophecy and the Bible
We have been laying out a “Case for the Bible” over the past few posts and the evidence collection has been based on a question that many have posed: How do we know the Bible is the Word of God? You can be skeptical of the Bible as I once was but at some point, in light of the avalanche of evidence, you have to pause and ask yourself: Could it be true? If there is at least a 50/50 chance based on the evidence you’ve seen here that the Bible is the Word of God (and its more like 90/10) don’t you owe it to yourself to consider it?
How to Stop Flirting with Sin
Almost by accident, we can fall into a gospel that’s heavy on encouraging one another in God’s forgiveness and grace and mercy, but woefully light on warning one another of the dangers of diving headlong into sin. This kind of gospel has no word for the brother or sister who gives in to temptation over and over again — who “makes a practice of sinning" (1 John 3:8).

Are You Thinking Like an Atheist? | SES
I want to challenge my brothers and sisters in Christ to not think like an atheist. Do not be content with what is often incomplete and unreflective thought. Our faith (and our knowledge of God’s existence) must be built upon deeper foundations that are not so easily disturbed by the tired old fallacious comments made by someone like Mr. Barker. We can’t believe something about God simply because it makes us feel good or it’s easier to think about than reality. The fact is, as was mentioned above, answering Mr. Barker with simple or pithy slogans from pop-Christianity or pop-apologetics will not get to the heart of the matter. In fact, it may even make the situation worse by not first properly defining and understanding terms and concepts relevant to the discussion. Such a failure in thinking can often lead to misunderstanding, a false sense of security, or even out-right heresy. We must be careful to build our understanding of God upon reality rather than with our emotions and oft-times misdirected thinking.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Invites Us to a Bright, Boisterous Duel with Death
The subsequent battle between Thor and the Hulk hinted at in the trailers is more of the entertaining CGI-punchfest one can expect from the MCU films. The film merges the “Ragnarok” narrative with the “Planet Hulk” storyline from the Marvel comics, thus allowing for Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) to be reunited with his Avenger pal and having more of a character arc than just being an elongated cameo. Trapped as the Hulk for the previous two years, Banner’s identity issues run parallel to Thor’s quest to save Asgard from Hela’s violent reign. Both Avengers must wrestle with their true identity as they work their way toward escaping the garbage dump in order to save Asgard. The chemistry between Hemsworth and Ruffalo is palpable; they’re certainly comfortable in their roles as these characters, and it shows in their affable demeanors. Hiddleston and Blanchett round out the cast’s solid performances.
Protect Your Congregation from a Gunman
If your local police department has an active shooter policy, a lockdown may be the best way to protect the segment of your congregation that is in the building during a shooting, but outside the immediate vicinity of the shooter. During a lockdown, certain areas of the church are required to shut, lock, and barricade their doors until police arrive. Those inside during a lockdown should stay away from windows and leave room lights on to ease the police team's search. A lockdown removes the chaos and confusion of an unplanned evacuation, but before instituting such a policy:

How Do I Love God More Than My Entertainment?
One of the things that I want to say is that I know there are people who would counsel Craig by simply saying, “Lighten up. Good grief, you sound like a legalist. Just go ahead. Relax and enjoy the entertainments that feel like they are a threat to your holiness. You are perfect in Jesus, you know, because you have your justification. It doesn’t matter what movies you watch or how much time you spend with TV or video games or Facebook or Twitter. It doesn’t matter. Just lighten up and enjoy your freedom in Jesus.”
On ‘Thoughts and Prayers’ After Another Mass Shooting
1.e. Politicians and public figures are fundamentally like all other human beings and have the same basic responses to tragedy. This is true no matter their position on controversial issues of policy (say, gun control). So it is no surprise that they respond immediately, like the rest of us do, with familiar words and phrases that express their human solidarity with those who suffer. Even the most accomplished speechwriters will take hours or days to come up with words adequate to great suffering. No human being, even the most articulate, can offer adequate words in the first moments after terrible news. To demonstrate that level of rhetorical fluency would in fact be to demonstrate an inhuman lack of empathy. Inarticulacy is the proper, empathic immediate response to tragedy.

Martin Luther King's Link to Martin Luther's 95 Theses
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of Luther’s story is that it need never have happened. Martin Luther was not a man born — or later inclined — to tilt at papal windmills. In fact, until about 1520 he was as vigorous a champion of the church as anyone who had ever lived. He desired desperately to help Rome elude the fate it ended up experiencing. In fact, in a case of extreme irony — so much so that one might think of Oedipus — he became the very man who brought about everything he had hoped to avoid. As his story illustrates, it was a sublime and ridiculous decoction of forces that created the perfect storm that burst over the European continent, creating what we now call the Reformation and the future. We can only wonder what might have been avoided had the distracted Pope Leo been sensitive to his role in history and taken the German monk’s earnest suggestions to heart. It was Rome’s mystifying inflexibility that drove Luther to bolder and bolder public positions, eventually putting him beyond rapprochement and setting him along a path that will forever be debated either as heretical and ignominious or as orthodox and glorious.

Rapid Response: 'The Gospels Are Unreliable'
In our Rapid Response series, we tackle common concerns about (and objections to) the Christian worldview by providing short, conversational responses. These posts are designed to model what our answers might look like in a one-on-one setting, while talking to a friend or family member. Imagine if someone made the following claim: “Even if the events recorded in the Gospels came from eyewitness accounts, why should we trust what eyewitnesses tell us? Even modern-day witnesses are notoriously unreliable and are often wrong about what they claim to have seen. Why should we trust ancient eyewitness accounts?” How would you respond to such an objection? Here is a conversational example of how I recently replied:
Seek Out Strangers This Sunday
When Christ’s body extends Christ’s love to strangers, it is a gospel miracle, a small but real reflection of Jesus’s own welcome to us: “Welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you” (Romans 15:7). Our hearts can rejoice to follow such commands when we view our gatherings as an opportunity to serve others rather than be served. This Sunday, be the hands of Jesus by reaching out and welcoming others. Pray and ask God for eyes to see whom you might welcome at church, whom you might linger with in conversation, and whom you might invite over to your home for a meal.

Women in China’s House Church Movement Face a Hidden Challenge
Marriages, too, are part of the movement’s ministry outreach. Two years ago, the American pastor and author Paul David Tripp conducted a marriage conference for Chinese pastors and their wives. He focused not on to-do lists and marital strategies but on matters of the heart and gospel transformation. As a result, multiple pastors openly repented for prioritizing their work over their wives and children. At the end of the conference, attendees participated in a vow renewal ceremony, and pictures of the event show middle-aged, stately pastors alternately weeping and beaming over the wives of their youth.

Mob Attacks St. George’s Church, Damages Other Christian-Owned Buildings
The Rural Church: A Special House of Prayer
Leaders in the early monastic movement envisioned their monasteries as special houses of prayer sustaining the global church. They left the city and tucked themselves away in rocky nooks and crannies in the desert of Egypt. They didn’t head for the sticks for fear of city life. They went out into the desert not as a flight but as a vocation—to pray on behalf of the city. They had a calling, and they took it with profound seriousness. What if the rural church were to claim a special vocation to prayer like these ancient desert warriors?
Desperate Is Normal: A Field Manual for Overwhelming Anxiety
The Bible is a field manual for the normal, embattled, desperate Christian life. God has mercifully packed it not only with examples and teaching, but also with songs and prayers for our trials. And we need songs and prayers to provide us words for the chaos, when anxiety and confusion fragment our thoughts.
A Small Rural Church Is Hard to Kill
Many of those who worship in a smaller church cherish the distinctively rural spirit of the church’s meetings. What’s more, a great many of the smaller rural churches in our nation worship in older facilities to which the congregation has developed an emotional attachment. Knocking out walls and windows to create multiple emergency egress pathways and to eliminate choke-points is both harder to do and harder to decide to do in a smaller church.

Is It Time for a New Jesus Movement Among Jewish Millennials? | The Stream
Yeah, as a non practicing liberal ( pot smoking / long hair / self proclaimed rebel ) Jewish teenager towards the end of that ” revolution” I can relate to Dr Browns experience. I remember the chats I had w/my newly enlightened expatriates from the reefer rebel lifestyle.
Sure, like many of my friends at the time prior to that small exodus from out of the pseudo philosophical play first & pay later lifestyle I was just a bit superficial. Yet in spite of my at times shallow teenage perspective there was indeed a deeper part to be dealt with. One may even accuse me at the time of appearing profound. Just a little bit. It was during this season of “profundity” that I discovered the source of this relatively new found need to know. In retrospect, it is now clear that any urging on my part towards a resolution of the conflict developing between myself & my expatriate friends was from a source outside of my self. Outside of my comfort zone. Yes even outside of my empirically substantiated world. The Spirit of the Living God began to resonate in the words of scripture .

Psalm 92: A Song for the Sabbath
Psalm 92 is titled “A Psalm. A Song for the Sabbath.” The Sabbath was a central institution in the Old Testament. God had strictly charged Israel to keep the Sabbath day holy. God declared that He had grounded the sanctity of the Sabbath in His creation (Gen. 2:3; Ex. 20:8–11) and in His redemptive work (Deut. 5:12–15). When the prophets warned Israel about her sins, desecration of the Sabbath was listed as a very serious issue (see, for example, Isa. 56; 58). Because of the importance of the Sabbath for Israel, it is surprising that this psalm is the only one in the Psalter that refers to that holy day. Even more surprising, perhaps, is the apparent absence of any clear reference to the Sabbath in the body of the psalm.
How Common Are Church Shootings?
The Story: One of the largest mass shootings in Texas history occurred yesterday at a small Baptist church, leaving Christians grieving and wondering how common such violence is in churches.
The Background: Yesterday morning 26-year-old Devin Patrick Kelley, armed with a semi-automatic rifle and wearing a ballistic vest, entered the First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs and killed or injured approximately half the congregation . At least 26 people were killed and 20 more were wounded. The victims range in age from 5 to 72 years old.
As he was leaving the church, a local resident fired on Kelley. The shooter fled in his vehicle and was later found dead, though authorities haven’t said what caused the fatal wound or whether it was self-inflicted.
Kelley had previously been court-martialed and spent a year in jail for an assaulting his spouse and their child. He was dismissed from the service with a bad conduct discharge.
His motive for the shooting at the church is currently unknown.
Among the dead is the 14-year-old daughter of the First Baptist Church’s pastor, Frank Pomeroy, who was traveling out of state with his wife during the incident.
