Reasons To Believe : Mars Research Reinforces Creation Model

Curiosity’s reports add yet more evidence to the argument for a universe and solar system that have existed for billions of years. At the same time, the radiation measurements demonstrate that Earth really is the ideal place for life—a point in favor of the idea that an intentional Creator designed our unique home planet with us in mind. We look forward to more fascinating, faith-affirming discoveries from the Mars rovers.

Sorry; No Such Thing as a Scientific Argument Against the Existence of God

I love science. I mean, I REALLY. LOVE. SCIENCE. My earliest, most vivid memories of school go back to my kindergarten class at C. Wayne Collier Elementary School, watching film strips (remember those, children of the 80s?) about dinosaurs, volcanoes, or the solar system, being transfixed by the awesomeness. My deepest desire in the sixth grade was to attend Space Camp. To this day, I am a sucker for a good science book or documentary–when it sticks to the actual science. Unfortunately, many productions these days promote a deeply philosophical agenda that isn’t scientific in the least (think of the recent TV series, Cosmos, hosted by atheist Neil DeGrasse Tyson) .  The tragic result of such propaganda is that some impressionable Christians end up questioning the rationality of their belief in God.

Jesus Changes Everything

Podcasts like “The Briefing” by Al Mohler and “Let My People Think” by Ravi Zacharias play important roles in the life of the believer— instructing us on how we should think about this world and current events with a distinctly Christian worldview. Jesus Changes Everything is a welcome addition to this genre. Dr. Sproul Jr. has a masterful way of helping people think through theological concepts and the implications of our actions and the actions of others on the commands we have been given on how we should live as children of the King in this fallen age. I highly recommend this podcast as a daily primer which is able to help us put on the lenses of a Christian, enabling us to walk and talk in accord with the commands of our Lord.

The Briefing 11-04-14

1) Election Day looms large on America’s political, cultural and moral horizons

9 What is the greatest achievement of the Obama administration?

Of course, if you’re a Democrat, this is a feature, not a bug. They like Americans to be dependent on government, because then more of them vote for bigger government – and that means Democrats get to raise taxes and spend even more money they didn’t earn. That’s good news, but it gets even better – because then they give speeches about how generous they are! With your money.

Burning Questions

Episode 1: Is There a God? Perhaps the biggest burning question of them all is this one: Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there? That’s a hotly debated question. On the one hand, our culture has recently seen a resurgent atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane and irrational. Yet for all of that, belief in God seems alive and well. Over 90% of people in the world say they do believe in a higher power. The question simply will not go away: Is there a God?

Should Your Church Stop Having a Stand and Greet Time?

Oh, I have to vehemently disagree on this one. I am as introverted as they come when it comes to visiting new churches, but THE deciding factor when it came to joining our church in particular was that first stand and greet time. A sweet soul made a beeline to introduce herself and hug our necks and it stuck with us through every other church we visited in town. Yes, it’s a little awkward, but that’s church. That’s humans. As for people not being friendly other times, sometimes as guests, you slip in right before the service, sit in the back, and surely aren’t going to stick around for long afterward, so this might be the only chance we get to shake a hand and hug a neck. I’ll admit, it’s awkward sometimes. Sometimes I have to shake a hand of someone I don’t know, or stealthily pull out my hand sanitizer afterward during cold season, but when I get a great big hug from Mr. Tom or get to see Ms. Sadie’s brooch collection or see the little seven-year old down the row from me, Ansley, gets so excited because this is a time that she, as a child of the church gets to hug a neck of her friend Karis or Jeremy, that warms my heart.

Do What You Love or Do What Needs Doing?

As his image-bearers, we work as he does. He puts us in the garden to do what needs doing—“to work it and keep it” (Gen. 2:15). Why Christians Should Vote

What does this mean for the practice of voting? It means that Christians in a democracy live under an authority that formally solicits our view of the good life. Granted, this view of the good life as expressed through voting is varied, and the connection is often tenuous. Yet the civic practice of voting can be described simply as judging what good(s) should be promoted or preserved, and which public servants would most faithfully carry out that mandate. Notice this basic obligation holds true regardless of the level or topic. From local school board elections to presidential campaigns, and from municipal concerns to statewide referenda on social issues, by voting we perform the minimum of our civic duty by electing, respecting, and empowering those public servants who give their full attention to governing.

Bigger Fish to Fry: Politics and the Priority of Disciplemaking

When the Christian remembers that we have bigger fish to fry than the next election, we’re ready to orient on long-term gospel progress rather than short-term political expediency. We’re ready to remember that this election isn’t an indicator of our spiritual fruitfulness in the last four years, but our faithfulness in disciplemaking in the last generation. Wanna change the landscape? Invest, like Jesus, at depth in a few and teach them to do the same, and the world might be a different place forty years from now. If it helps, think of it as getting to work now on the 2052 campaign. More important than who we are voting for today is who we are discipling right now.

THINKAPOLOGETICS.COM

Ontology is defined as the branch of philosophy that examines the study of being or existence. For example, when Jesus says, “If you have seen Me, you have seen the Father” (John 14:9), ontology asks questions such as, “Is Jesus saying He has the same substance or essence of the Father?” Ontology is especially relevant in relation to the Trinity since Orthodox Christians are required to articulate how the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are all the same substance or essence. In relation to ontology, the late Jewish scholar Abraham J. Heschel said, “Biblical ontology does not separate being from doing.” Heshel went on to say, “What is acts. The God of Israel is a God who acts, a God of mighty deeds.” (2) Jesus continually appeals to His “works” that testify to His Messiahship.  “Works” are directly related to the miracles of Jesus (Jn. 5:20; 36;10:25; 32-28; 14:10-12; 15:24) and is synonymous with “signs.” Interestingly enough, when Jesus speaks of miracles and he calls them “works” he doesn’t refer to  Exod. 4:1-9, but to Num. 16:28, “Hereby you shall know that the LORD has sent me to do all these works , and that it has not been of my own accord.

Dennis Prager - A Note to ‘Fiscal Conservatives’

The Left and its political party will always create social issues and tout them in divisive terms that make Republicans and conservatives look “reactionary.” Today it is same-sex marriage, the next day it is the Republican “war on women,” and soon it will be ending the objective male-female designation of Americans (including at birth, because children should have the “right” to determine their gender and not have their parents and their genitalia determine it). Or it will be animal rights, race-based affirmative action, or an environmentalist issue. Concerning the latter, how many “fiscal conservatives” who vote for Democrats are prepared to abandon the party on the “climate change” issue? I suspect very few.

14 Ways I Teach Apologetics to My 5-Year-Olds

All kidding aside, it doesn’t have to be like that at all! Ideally, we should incorporate apologetics into the way we teach our kids about Christianity. Today I want to give you 14 examples of how I do that with my 5-year-old twins. Obviously, the details of how I communicate with them are age-specific, but I hope this will give you an idea of how the foundation of apologetics fits right into our regular Bible study time.

The Basics of New Testament Textual Criticism

A discussion of both the value of and the problem with using Non-Greek versions of the New Testament for the purpose of New Testament textual criticism is carried on by Dr. Daniel B. Wallace of the Center for the Study of New Testament Manuscripts (CSNTM). Dr. Wallace shows how versions of the New Testament such as the Latin Version, the Coptic Version, and the Syriac Version are significant for recovering the original autographic text of the New Testament.

41 Does God know the future? - Christian Research Institute

Finally, while open theists suggest that God cannot know the future exhaustively because he changes his plans as a result of what people do, in reality it is not God who changes, but people who change in relationship to God. By way of analogy, if you walk into a headwind you struggle against the wind; if you make a u–turn on the road the wind is at your back. It is not the wind that has changed, but you have changed in relationship to the wind. As such, God’s promise to destroy Nineveh was not aborted because he did not know the future but because the Ninevites, who had walked in opposition to God, turned from walking in their wicked ways. Indeed, all of God’s promises to bless or to judge must be understood in light of the condition that God withholds blessing on account of disobedience and withholds judgment on account of repentance (Ezekiel 18; Jeremiah 18:7–10).

42
Prayer

The second fountain of wisdom from which Keller draws vivifying water is the church, especially the writings of leaders in the past. In one powerful section he draws from Augustine, Martin Luther, and John Calvin to give us new insights on the Lord’s Prayer. Keller doesn’t merely quote these three great men but rephrases their timeless words to make them accessible and clear. This is the role of a skilled teacher—rewording something succinctly, clearly, and with startling freshness. The footnotes in this book are staggering for their breadth and depth—Keller is amazingly well-read. And while he is readily aware of new and recent books on prayer, he will readily tell you the best stuff comes from deep in the cellar of church history. Not only do these three great men speak to us, but so do the Puritans (like John Owen, Richard Baxter, Richard Sibbes), Jonathan Edwards, and others. Keller even makes a careful case for reading the Christian mystics of the middle ages, commending their clearly superior intimacy with God while carefully filtering their doctrinal imperfections.

Introduction to Miracles - Eric Metaxas

In considering what form this book should take, I felt a large part of it should be miracle stories themselves, since they are perhaps the best evidence we can have for miracles. (Some readers may wish to skip directly to those stories and read the first part of this book second, a choice I would cheerfully countenance.) I decided to limit the book to only the stories of people I knew personally. This naturally limits the scope of what stories I could include, but the advantage is that I wouldn’t have to wonder about the character and credibility of the people telling these stories. It also underscores how tremendously prevalent such stories are. I did not scour the known world for these tales but only asked people I knew well enough to trust their accounts. There are many friends and acquaintances I did not ask because it became clear to me that had I asked every friend for stories like these, I would have had far too much material for this book and might never have finished it. But the wealth of the miracle stories I was able to find within a fairly close circle of friends makes one wonder how many other stories are out there among my friends, and yours.

Oklahoma Pastor Defends 'Beer and Hymns' Church Night After Event Draws Protesters; Says 'Jesus Drank Wine With Hookers' (Video)

"To people that don't like it, it might not be for you and not every church service is for everyone, which is why there are 1,000 different churches on every street corner you look at. We reach people, we had many people come through that said they have never felt comfortable enough to come into a church until they saw that sign and they're not alcoholics, or drunks, they're just people that like to have a beer every now and again."

Why I’m a Single Issue Voter

It means that all human beings, at any and every stage of life and in any and every state of consciousness or self-awareness, of any and every class, ethnicity, race, religion, sex, of any physical or mental ability or genetic defect, are to be considered persons of immeasurable worth and of inviolable dignity because they have been made in the image of God, and that they therefore must be treated in a manner commensurate with this moral status. Human dignity, however, is not based on the criteria set by man, but by the standards set by God. We can’t truly treat people with dignity if the dignity is not rooted in the eternal commands of our Redeemer.
