‘Fixer Upper’ Couple: ‘Our Family Has Made a Commitment to Put Christ First’

The couple behind HGTV’s reality series Fixer Upper recently spoke with Billy Graham Evangelistic Association about their faith and the impact the show has had on viewers. Fixer Upper centers on Chip and Joanna Gaines, and—like a lot of HGTV series—shows the designers undertaking new home renovation projects each episode. The couple first met at Baylor University, and for years, ran a home renovation and design company before being approached by the cable network. In the interview, they explained: Our family has made a commitment to put Christ first, a lifestyle our parents modeled for us very well. They showed us how to keep our marriage and family centered around God. As for "Fixer Upper", we have been surprised at the impact of our faith through the show. We haven’t been overtly evangelical, but the rich feedback we have received on family and love all source from our faith. Jesus said the world would know His disciples by their love for one another, and we’ve glimpsed this in practice and strive for it every day. It’s not the first time the show’s stars have spoken about their faith. Back in April, Joanna filmed this video for Baylor, discussing her testimony, calling and using her platform to share her faith.

The Meaning of Suffering

He beckons us into the obedience of suffering not to demonstrate the strength of our devotion to duty or to reveal the vigor of our moral resolve or to prove the heights of our tolerance for pain, but rather to manifest, in childlike faith, the infinite preciousness of his all-satisfying promises.

Comforting Those Caught in the Crossfire of the Abortion Debate

There should be no safer place for wounded persons than the church. Tragically, I’ve ministered to women who’ve sat silently in church for years, fearing someone would discover their “secret.” Fear of rejection and judgment can feel overwhelming. Most of these women look as if they have it all together, but underneath they’re suffering and in desperate need for truth and mercy—truth that leads to repentance and mercy that leads to healing.

God Doesn’t Want You to Be Cynical About Your Future

I've been thinking a lot about cynicism. Many recent life events left me cynical. I fight against it on a daily basis, but I don't think I'll ever trust the church (as in, church the institution) like I used to. I'm learning to trust God because he is perfect. The church has issues because its made up of imperfect people, but I can't be mad at God. He is perfect even though the church isn't. I try to believe the best about the world, but I feel like the reason many millennials who are struggling with their faith get upset with the church is because we are trying to believe that the world is still good. We try to believe that there's hope. Yet, I hear over and over again from older Christians that the world is "going to Hell in a handbasket." It's hard. Hard not to be cynical. Hard not to hurt. When the people who are supposed to be your leaders do nothing but condemn your generation, my natural reaction is to not want anything to do with them. So, on a daily basis, I fight cynicism and ask God to help me. I still go to church. Still live a Christian lifestyle. Still follow Jesus. But God, it hurts.

Purity Is More Than Saving Sex for Marriage

James states that pure religion is we look after “orphans and widows” (1:27). But whatever cause we undertake—whether we’re called to care for widows and orphans, end sex trafficking, protect the environment, engage the business world, stop abortion or raise a godly family—it’s all fueled from the waters in our spiritual reservoir (see John 7:38).

Planned Parenthood CEO Asks Speaker Ryan to Stop Investigation: “We Have Nothing to Hide”

“First, they demonstrate that at the highest reaches of the organization, Planned Parenthood has been selling unborn human baby parts for profit. Now PP has disputed the notion that there is profit involved, but I think it is clear from numerous points and videos that that was the intent. You even have colorful admission from one very highly placed Planned Parenthood (official), who said, “I want a Lamborghini.” It got a lot of attention, and people said, ‘Oh, she’s just joking.’ But when you look at the context of the conversations in the video a profit motive is very clear,” she said.

The Sequel to J. I. Packer’s ‘Knowing God’

With 27 short chapters, readers can discern Jones’s argument without difficulty. He doesn’t waste sentences; he writes crisp, precise prose that achieves its intended purpose. We may wish Jones had extended his analysis in certain sections, but he didn’t aim to say everything that can be said. For example, in his discussion of Christ’s sayings (ch. 18), he only focuses on the sayings from the cross. Jones’s commentary lures you in to meditate on deep truths, not in a clinical manner but in a way that keeps you amazed at the person and work of our Lord. The pastoral tone resounds throughout each page.

Study Says Universe Had No Beginning and No Big Bang?

What does this new study mean? First of all, I do not expect many scientists to abandon the big bang model in favor of this new one. The big bang model is firmly entrenched (the big bang is too big to fail, so to speak), so not many scientists will give it up willingly. The discovery of the cosmic microwave background a half-century ago is taken as the great proof of the big bang model. It would require a complete reevaluation of the cosmic microwave background to dislodge the widespread support that the big bang model has. There are a few scientists who are committed to belief in an eternal universe—some of them likely will be attracted to this new model. I think that this might be the motivation of the authors of this new study. If there was no big bang in the past, then how did the universe begin? Of course, there is the option of biblical creation, but this does not seem to be the underlying belief of the authors of this new study. They have not yet indicated what they think. One possibility is that they may propose that the universe is oscillating. Normally, the idea of an oscillating universe is an infinite series of a big bang, followed by expansion, an eventual contraction, leading to a big crunch, followed by a new cycle initiated by another big bang.

Church, Stop Doing so Many Good Things |

In most church situations you will do more by doing less. That is, once the strategy to walk more faithfully in line with the gospel at a given time in the life of a church is clear, those priorities should focus and reshape everything you do congregationally. All that you do should be consistently evaluated for how it is strategically leading toward the goal. The trauma of changing the focus of a congregation by removing ministries and tactics in which the church has previously engaged is lessened by clear vision and strategic focus, and it replaces the former with a new way to serve and contribute. The purpose of shrinking the number of things a congregation does is to expand that focus and excellence of what it chooses to pursue as a community of faith.

7 things to pray for missionaries

There are numerous ways a church or even those who are preparing for ministry can pray to bless their missionaries.  Because the church might not always know those immediate, pressing issues in the missionary’s life, praying from God’s Word is always valuable and applicable in every season and place. Here are seven simple ways to pray for missionaries from Paul’s charge to Timothy (see 2 Tim. 2:1-7):

Those Whom He Justified He Also Glorified

I think the reason that Paul omitted sanctification from his chain in Romans 8:29–30 — the reason he did not say, "Those whom he justified he also sanctified, and those whom he sanctified he also glorified" — is that Paul is thinking of glorification in a way that includes sanctification. So glorification is the work of God by which he makes his children both spiritually and physically glorious. It begins now as a process of becoming holy, and it ends at the resurrection when we receive our new and glorious bodies.

One Great Lesson Every Leader Can Learn from the KC Royals - Tim Elmore

A culture of character, hard work and leadership prevails in this organization, from their eight minor league teams all the way through to the major league team we just saw dominate the Houston Astros, Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets in post-season play. As Peter Drucker is quoted as saying: “ culture eats strategy for lunch .” It’s not that the Royals had no strategy; on the contrary, they worked their strategy beautifully for years. In fact, it’s because they do not enjoy the luxury of a gigantic budget that they must work a strategy so well. They can’t simply buy an Alex Rodriquez or an Albert Pujols or a Josh Hamilton at the drop of a hat. Their strategy, however, revolved around cultivating a culture that would infect every player and coach in a marvelous way. Organization culture works like the ocean tide—when the tide goes up, all the boats go up. Everyone is affected and they become better people for having worked in such close proximity. Let me offer some observations I’ve made about the culture of the Royals, and for that matter, every great team, club or organization:

New Episcopal Church Leader Calls for Crossing Racial Lines

The U.S. Episcopal Church now has its first ever black leader . The 62-year-old Michael Curry on Sunday became the U.S. Episcopal Church’s first black leader. Before that, Curry served for 15 years as the leader of the Diocese of North Carolina. During yesterday’s ceremony at the Washington National Cathedral, Curry called Episcopalians to cross divides of race, education and wealth for the Gospel. He said, “God has not given up on the world and God is not finished with the Episcopal Church yet.” The New York-based denomination, which has made news several times in recent years for controversial theological moves and tensions with Anglicans around the world, has about 1.9 million members.

Sandra Bullock Will Star in a New All-Female ‘Ocean's 11’ Movie

Yet another franchise reboot is in the works. The new iteration of the caper series will star an all-female cast led by Sandra Bullock. Aside from Bullock, none of the other gang members have been revealed, but we can probably still expect the same sort of slick, Vegas style and quick dialogue: Both Clooney and director Steven Soderbergh are helping to produce.

Faithfulness and Bridge-Building Go Together

These bridge-building coalitions have affected many sectors of our culture while holding to deep biblical convictions. The CCCU and its member institutions are likewise leaders in initiatives that, in Gerson and Wehner’s words, exhibit “the relentless defense of human dignity in the course of human events.” Our students learn to navigate the cultural landscape with the truth and grace of Christ. This is why, in a rapidly changing culture, Christ-centered higher education must be not only protected but also advanced.

Paying your bills. You may not think this is a big deal, but it’s a big deal to God. Do you spend more money than you make? That is a lack of integrity. Do you get yourself in debt for things that you can’t pay off? That is a lack of integrity. Psalm 37:21 says, “The wicked borrow and never pay back.”

224 People Died in a Mysterious Plane Crash Over Egypt

This weekend, all 224 people aboard a Russian passenger plane died when it mysteriously crashed over Egypt. Now, an executive from Kogalymavia airlines has told reporters that they believe "an external influence” caused the plane to break into pieces mid-flight. According to his statement, officials have ruled out “technical problems and reject human error"—which is contrary to initial reports from Egyptian media. Officials in both countries however say that claims of responsibility from ISIS militants are without merit . The plane was in the air only 20 minutes when ground control personnel said it vanished from radar, and, according must have experienced “a mechanical impact.” Recording and tracking devices on the plane have been recovered from the crash scene, though officials are still in the process of mining the data. The Egypt Prime Minister's Office also released several images (like this one from Suliman el-Oteify) showing officials investigating the scene of crash.

Pew: Rich in Faith Get Richer While Poor Get Poorer in America

Pew also found some ways that Americans overall are becoming more "spiritual." The number of adults who regularly feel spiritual peace and well-being is up from 52 percent in 2007 to 59 percent in 2014 (margin of error for all Americans: ±0.6%), and evangelicals are no exception. Three-quarters of evangelicals feel a deep sense of spiritual peace at least once a week, up from 68 percent in 2007. So do three-quarters of historically black Protestants: 73 percent reported feeling a deep spiritual well-being at least once a week in 2014, compared with 65 percent in 2007.

Beyond the commandments?

“Some people seem to think we have got beyond the commandments. What did Christ say? ‘Think not that I am come to destroy the law and the prophets; I am not come to destroy but to fulfill. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one title shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.’ The commandments of God given to Moses in the Mount at Horeb are as binding today as ever they have been since the time they were proclaimed in the hearing of the people. Can My Life be Plagued By Generational Sins, Hexes, or Curses?

I remember going to the hospital one New Years Eve night, when the third heartache and tragedy had come into one of the young families of our lives. And they wondered, how worse can it get? And the father took me out in the hall from the place where his child was dying, and asked, “Pastor John, can a Christian be under a curse? I don’t know any explanation why so many bad things are happening to me.” And I said, “You may tonight be free from any kind of curse, from God’s Law, or from any voodoo or any hex because Christ bore every curse for you (Galatians 3:13). That brought him great comfort, and they worked their way through that in a wonderful way.

Christians have always believed in a romantic, committed, exclusive view of sex

I think that women should want men who believe in chastity before marriage and who believe in committing to you exclusively as protector and provider for a lifetime. And they should have to prove that they can be faithful and committed during the courtship, too. You can’t just take their word for it, they have to work before the marriage to demonstrate their ability as a husband and father. It’s not just that this is the way that we have always done it, it’s that there are real reasons why chastity and fidelity are important for marriage success. You can’t just have fun, pick anyone you like, and have marriage “work out”. You have to be comfortable with chastity and fidelity, and the person you choose has to be comfortable with chastity and fidelity. It takes two people with self-control to make a stable, exclusive and committed marriage.
