He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not: How to Know God Really Loves You

And their inners did not tell them of the fierce love of God demonstrated in the Son of God being brutally executed as he bore the wrath of God on sinners’ behalf. The fallen human heart is too politically correct, too Hallmark, too civilized to mention that God so loved the world that he sent his only Son to be brutally murdered for it.

Why Is the Trinity An Essential Christian Doctrine? | Cold Case Christianity

“That we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; Neither confounding the Persons; nor dividing the Essence. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father unlimited; the Son unlimited; and the Holy Ghost unlimited. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord.

The Real Story of the Reformation

This week the world celebrates the 500th anniversary of an event that never happened. Well, something did happen, and it altered the course of history. But what actually took place is astoundingly different from how it is portrayed today. As the story is told, on Oct. 31, 1517, an Augustinian monk named Martin Luther socked the European church establishment in the kisser by defiantly nailing his “95 Theses” on indulgences to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. The thunder of his hammer resounded throughout...

You Cannot Guarantee Your Child’s Godliness

He made metal idols for the false god Baal (2 Chronicles 28:2). He made sacrifices and offerings to foreign gods “on the high places and on the hills and under every green tree” (2 Chronicles 28:4) — all over the land that God had promised and given his people. When God sent waves of enemies against the nation because of her sin, Ahaz ran to Assyria, and not God, for help (2 Chronicles 28:16–18). He even stole from the temple to bribe the Assyrian king (2 Chronicles 28:21). Then he destroyed the vessels for worship, slammed and locked the doors of the temple, and made altars all over Jerusalem where he worshiped the gods of the nation’s conquerors (2 Chronicles 28:22–25).

Ask Pastor Mark: How Do You Stay Best Friends in Your Marriage?

When my wife, Grace, and I speak at marriage conferences, an overwhelming number of people of all ages come up to us with the most heartbreaking stories of loneliness, marital infidelity, childhood abuse, and extremely detailed “can we do this or that?” sex questions. Often their shame and embarrassment keep them from getting the help they need in their marriages. In local church ministry, we have spent more than twenty years counseling people before they were married about how to live as a Christian in such a sexualized culture, what’s okay—from a biblical perspective—to do in bed once you are married, and how to deal with intimacy issues all throughout married life.

A modern myth is that learning and fun are incompatible. Learning is boring, drab, and dull. Entertainment is exciting, stimulating, and captivating. Forgotten Today, Remembered Forever

Brothers and sisters, the obscurity that DeYoung wisely calls us to embrace — accepting a place of insignificance in the world — must be counterbalanced in our hearts by a faith that all of heaven is an audience. Just like the “others” of Hebrews 11, we may find ourselves among the no-names of God’s people. Most of the children of God from the foundation of the world onward never won a battle like Gideon or parted the sea like Moses.

The Dark Alleys in Young Adult Fiction

In the past decade, at least ten women have confided in me that they struggle with habitual masturbation. For some, the habit began before the age of ten. Years later, they still struggle, hiding it from their spouses in shame. One friend, a married woman, confessed pop fiction as her main source of temptation. She is far from unusual. For a woman, what could be more enticing than a story that pulls at your heart and ensnares your emotions?

Does Christian Hypocrisy Undermine the Reasonability of the Faith?

Hypocrisy is such a massive challenge, says Guinness, because Christians are called to be God’s witnesses to the world (Isa. 43:10; John 3:28): “In other words, before we are asked to preach, proclaim or try to persuade people of the claims of Jesus and his Father, we are asked simply to be witnesses for him—to provide an honest and factual account of what we have seen and heard objectively, and what we ourselves have experienced (‘Once I was blind, but now I can see’)—and to live lives that support what we say.”[1]

Thursday, November 2, 2017 — The Briefing

According to the news media this morning, he is still in critical condition, but he is expected to survive after surgery in a hospital there in New York City. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, more information was forthcoming although almost always excruciatingly slowly. We came to understand that the suspect is now believed to have been planning this attack, crude as it was, for a matter of weeks, perhaps even months. We now also know that the pattern here is exactly what we have seen in attacks in Europe and beyond, and it’s consistent with the mobilization of lone wolf terrorists as they are known by the Islamic state as that state is losing its territory with the collapse of the caliphate due to allies and their defensive takeover of so much of their territory in Syria and Iraq. The Islamic state has moved to instead instill terror around the world by mobilizing persons with whom it may never have directly communicated, taking up the cause. One of the instructions from the Islamic state is that those who undertake attacks, very murderous attacks in the name of the Islamic state are to make that clear in the course of the attack.

Jesus Calling: How Well Are You Listening?

Are you listening to Jesus in a non-edited manner? Selective listening is rebellion. He who has ears to hear, let him hear. Do you find yourself reading the Bible and thinking, “Well, that’s not what he really meant,” or, “That’s just asking too much,” or, “I can’t do that”? If we find ourselves tweaking and diluting the Bible to fit comfortably around our desires, hunches, sins, and idols, the apostle John warns us — maybe you don’t know Jesus after all.

Apologetics Hit & Misc: Case Makers Academy

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Peace with God

To be sure, subjectivity is not sin, and the Scriptures themselves call us to self-examination. Paul’s call is to “examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves” (2 Cor. 13:5). The “if . . . then” syllogism that fills the first letter of the Apostle John reminds us that there are practical tests we must apply to our hearts and lives that will help us discern evidences of spiritual life. “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us” (1 John 1:8). “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (2:15). “If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, then you too will abide in the Son and in the Father” (2:24). “If anyone has the world’s goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God’s love abide in him?” (3:17). One of the tools we have been given to dispel fears and settle our hearts is the discipline of self-examination. Those in whom the Holy Spirit has worked the miracle of new birth are those who bear fruit in keeping with repentance, and we are indeed to seek that fruit in our lives.

Three Reasons Why People Interpret the Bible Differently

I was asked, “If there is a way to correctly interpret Scripture, then why do so many ‘learned’ people come away with different interpretations?” Variations of this question come up from time to time: If a god had really inspired the Bible, wouldn’t he have written it clearly enough for everyone to understand? Don’t disagreements on the meaning of the text disprove its divine origins? People can make the Bible say whatever they want it to say; doesn’t that prove there’s no one correct interpretation?

44 10 Lessons from Reformation in the SBC

In light of the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, it’s good to consider what we can learn from the recent reformation in the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). With so much focus on the Reformation, we’re reminded that we need to read church history in a careful and particular way, learning the lessons available to us there. We encounter honorable and dishonorable characters, and we find the same pattern as we read the Scriptures. We look to church history even as we’re taught by reading Scripture to learn from all, and to remember that the Bible has only one true hero—the one true and living God. We learn from the patriarchs and all other honored biblical characters. We learn from their faithfulness, and from their moments of unfaithfulness, too. History has much to teach us. The Rise of Theological Liberalism To understand our present predicament, we must understand the line between the Reformation and where we now stand. That great dividing line is modernity. After the Enlightenment, an open denial or suspicion of the supernatural arose. Theological truth claims were either undermined or rejected out of hand.

Belief In God Is Not a Feeling

I suppose the first and quickest answer is that the thought itself is a bit incoherent. Consider what is being said. “Belief” is that state of mind in which one concludes that a fact is true. I believe that the car is red. I believe that John’s explanation regarding the accident is false. There is, of course, an issue of certainty. My belief regarding the car’s color may be mistaken, due to poor lighting; or my belief that John is lying may be wrong. But it makes little sense to say that, as to the car’s color, I have no belief. Or that I am hearing John’s explanation but believe nothing about it. Claiming to have “no belief” may seem high-minded and impartial, but it simply mistakes the way the human mind works. Whether we will it or not, our minds naturally move toward forming and reassessing beliefs. Indeed, at a basic level, we need to do so to stay alive. We must be constantly assessing our environment, our surroundings, to make prudent choices as to what to do next. Believing something about those choices and surroundings is indispensable.

Reason to Believe: A Response to Common Objections to Christianity by RC Sproul $2.99

Six subtle ways a sermon dishonors Scripture.

Six Common Ways Preachers Dishonor God’s Word

The Protestant Reformation was a recovery of the pulpit, and yet five hundred years later there are ways Protestant preachers unwittingly fail to honor the Bible in the pulpit. Which leads to today’s question from an anonymous church leader. “Pastor John, I am on staff at a church, and over the past couple of months, I have noticed a trend in my pastor’s preaching. Let me first say that nothing he says would ever be considered wrong. He uses points from the overarching theme of Scripture in his sermons. Bottom line, he preaches the truth, but those points rarely derive from the sermon text he reads at the beginning of his message. Is this a problem? What’s at stake? And is this a common phenomenon or an anomaly?”

The Point: Too Catholic for Georgetown

Love Saxa’s views on marriage, of course, are just identical to the teaching of the Catholic Church. As one theology professor at Catholic University of America remarked, “I suppose the question for Georgetown is whether they think Catholic kids can still be Catholic there.”
