Telling the Truth: Evangelizing Postmoderns by D.A. Carson (editor) $2.99 "A pre-modern baseball umpire would have said something like this: 'There's balls, and there's strikes, and I call 'em as they are.' The modernist would have said, 'There's balls, and there's strikes, and I call 'em as I see 'em.' And the postmodernist umpire would say, 'They ain't nothing until I call 'em.'" With that humorous quote, Ravi Zacharias illustrates the challenge postmodernism poses to Christians passionate about evangelism. How do you communicate truth to a world that isn't sure what truth is--or even if truth is? How do you commend spiritual absolutes to people who insist there are none? If you've puzzled, even struggled, over such questions, this book provides informed insights on the heart of the Gospel, the soul of postmodern culture, and their complex interface.Telling the Truth will open your eyes to how the contest for souls is and help you lay the groundwork necessary to point biblically uninformed, postmodern men and women toward an encounter with non-negotiable truth -- an absolute revealed in the Bible that points to the reality of sin and the need for a Savior.

People new to Reformed theology may wonder just what it was about a five-hundred-year-old historical movement that affects our thinking so much today. So join Dr. Stephen Nichols for an inviting, approachable take on “Reformation 101,” as he explores the events of the Protestant Reformation from the perspective of important figures from each of four key countries in this new seven-part teaching series. More than a history lesson, Dr. Nichols helps believers understand why the Reformation mattered then and matters now.

Seeking Allah, Finding Jesus Event

During this event, you’ll hear Nabeel’s story: a dramatic journey from Islam to Christianity, complete with friendships, investigations, and supernatural dreams along the way. Providing an intimate window into a loving Muslim home, Qureshi will share how he developed a passion for Islam before discovering, almost against his will, evidence that Jesus rose from the dead and claimed to be God. Through his testimony, your church will hear the challenges in reaching a devout Muslim with the Gospel and how to navigate those conversations and gain insight into Islamic worldview and Muslim apologetics and how to defend Scripture and the Gospel fully informed with knowledge, kindness and grace.

Darwinian Biologist Says: Don't Be So Quick to Dismiss Raëlian Science

Now we know that a wafer and wine don't change into a beaker of blood and a gobbet of flesh after they're blessed, but one other strategy is to look at the DNA in these substances. Perhaps (or so the Raëlian investigators thought), they'd find human DNA -- Jesus' -- in the wafer and wine...  And so Marsic and Sam did a study. They purloined five consecrated wafers (they discuss the ethics of this, and decide that it's okay), and analyzed the DNA of the consecrated wafers as well as that of a "control" group of unconsecrated wafers, a "human DNA" control group from cultured cells, and a negative control (nothing added to the PCR [DNA amplification] reagents).

What Martin Luther taught me about counseling

This does not mean that one’s own personal sin is the only issue on the table in counseling—people need counseling help for many more reasons than that.  Personal sin, though, is at least one of the things on the table in counseling.  And even when people are experiencing pain at the hands of someone else’s sin or because of the presence of sin in a fallen world they will always need to learn what it means to turn—to repent in the most general sense—to Jesus Christ and find his mercy, comfort, and power.  If the entire life of believers is about repentance, and if counseling is about the issues of life, then Martin Luther reminds us that counseling is one of the most fundamental realities of counseling.

Apologetics and Evangelism

It would be my contention that apologetics is a part of evangelism. When apologetics comes to be divorced from evangelism then it has lost its way. If we are just seeking to prove that the Christian message is credible and plausible then we are just competitors in an intellectual game. If we win the argument then we can pat ourselves on the back. if we lose then it’s a shame, but there are no great consequences.

8 The Gospel Is Worth the Pain - Stand to Reason Blog

O God, Almighty God everlasting! how dreadful is the world! behold how its mouth opens to swallow me up, and how small is my faith in thee! ... Oh! the weakness of the flesh, and the power of Satan! If I am to depend upon any strength of this world—all is over.... The knell is struck.... Sentence is gone forth.... 0 God! 0 God! O thou, my God! help me against all the wisdom of this world. Do this, I beseech thee; thou shouldst do this ... by thy own mighty power.... The work is not mine, but thine. I have no business here.... I have nothing to contend for with these great men of the world! I would gladly pass my days in happiness and peace. But the cause is thine.... And it is righteous and everlasting! 0 Lord! help me! 0 faithful and unchangeable God! I lean not upon man. It were vain! Whatever is of man is tottering, whatever proceeds from him must fail. My God! my God! does thou not hear? My God! art thou no longer living? Nay, thou canst not die. Thou dost but hide thyself. Thou hast chosen me for this work. I know it! ... Therefore, 0 God, accomplish thine own will! Forsake me not, for the sake of thy well-beloved Son, Jesus Christ, my defense, my buckler, and my stronghold.

15 Things to Start Doing By the Time You’re 30

These are good ideas. I am not sure I'd make it sound so obligatory since people in the 20-30 range may somehow feel a bit despaired for not being able to do these things and feeling like they "missed the mark." I know at 26, I certainly have not near enough money to store away $3000, absolutely not. I barely will scratch making that at all this year. I know life isn't about money, but with there being already an emphasis in the world about the importance of money in our life, I was hoping for a little less monetary advice. It's hard enough to hear from the world "Make Money," so when I continue to hear it on this site, it can be a bit discouraging.

Are there degrees of punishment in hell? On the basis of the Bible we may safely conclude that not all existence in hell is equal. It’s time to face the fact – winter is inconspicuously and slowly approaching. The cold mornings and falling leaves are unmistakable signs of the forthcoming season that many people consider the most unpleasant part of the year. Not everybody can afford to spend the winter in a beach house in sunny Florida so, for those who will have to put their warm hats, scarves and gloves on, we at least made a list of the coldest US cities to avoid. Based on the average winter temperature according to, these 25 cities with a population of over 50,000 do have the right to complain about the weather. Open the Door to Halloween

There is a chain of inseparable realities in our local churches that shape the way we look at the costumes shuffling down our streets and knocking on our doors this Friday night. The first reality, as Jeff Vanderstelt explains, is the fluency of gospel proclamation in our communities of faith. We want to be churches that proclaim the gospel to one another, believers to believers. And then, building off this reality, it’s inevitable that we begin to share the gospel with those who don’t know Jesus — that is, if we understand sanctification.

Terminally Ill Woman May Postpone Taking Her Life

Brittany Maynard said in early October she expected to kill herself Nov. 1, less than three weeks before her 30th birthday. She emphasized that she wasn't suicidal, but wanted to die on her own terms and reserved the right to move the date forward or push it back.

The Light Shines on All Hallows’ Eve

All Hallows’ Eve is now all the more holy for also being Reformation Day. It is a day of profound thanksgiving for Christians, a day to “remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God” and to “consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). October 31 is not just a day for nighttime candy-collecting guising fun for children. It is a day for us to tell them the sweet gospel of the Light of the world and to help them remember our gospel forebears whose courageous stand on biblical truth is why we now know the gospel.

Local Mission, Local Churches

Following much prayer and lengthy discussion with Mars Hill’s leadership, the board of Mars Hill has concluded that rather than remaining a centralized multi-site church with video-led teaching distributed to multiple locations, the best future for each of our existing local churches is for them to become autonomous self-governed entities. This means that each of our locations has an opportunity to become a new church, rooted in the best of what Mars Hill has been in the past, and independently led and run by its own local elder teams.

Your Most Ordinary Life Now

Belonging to the body of Christ, being exposed regularly to the means of grace and to the communion of saints, is radically life-changing. But that process can’t usually be measured in days, weeks, and months. We have to simply believe God’s promise. It’s easy to burn out when we expect every public service or daily time with the Lord to be earth-shattering. And just when it becomes ordinary, we back off because we don’t want it to become “routine.” But that’s just the point: it’s good to have routines that we stick to regardless of the fireworks. Again, I think of analogies: “How was your marriage today?” “How was your workout?” Most of the time, it’s “fine.” You can’t have revolutions every day or there wouldn’t be steady growth. Pastors, too, can burn out when every “worship experience” has to be phenomenal. All of this frenetic activity is, ironically, weakening sanctification, keeping our roots shallow, and making us dependent on “super apostles”—the ministers and their gifts instead of Christ’s gift-giving through his ministry.

Burning Questions

Episode 1: Is There a God? Perhaps the biggest burning question of them all is this one: Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there? That’s a hotly debated question. On the one hand, our culture has recently seen a resurgent atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane and irrational. Yet for all of that, belief in God seems alive and well. Over 90% of people in the world say they do believe in a higher power. The question simply will not go away: Is there a God?

Martin Luther's 95 Theses

On October 31, 1517 Martin Luther posted his now-famous 95 Theses on the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. No Offense: The New Threats to Free Speech

We know that today’s British government wouldn’t do so. Burning a Remembrance Day poppy is the British equivalent of flag-burning, and Ms. May, the home secretary, implicitly disagreed with the American precedent in her defense of Britain’s restrictive laws. She explained that “a careful balance [had] to be struck between protecting our proud tradition of free speech and taking action against those who cause widespread offense.” Realistically parsed, this amounts to an acknowledgment that Britain’s proud tradition of free speech will not in fact be protected. Speech that offends significant groups of people—as distinguished from speech that directly invites or threatens violence—will be censored or punished.

When We Don't Get A Happy Ending

As hard as it is to believe, these men had already had their happy ending. They had already discovered peace, redemption, resolution, purpose, and hope. They had already discovered these things years ago, not in circumstance, but in Christ. They did not need their earthly lives to continue on an upward trajectory because they knew they were on an eternal one instead. And how desperately I, and I suspect so many of us, need to reclaim this dynamic. We need to divorce our joy and peace from the ups and downs of our circumstances, the hectic EKG of success and failure, and plug them instead into the constant character of God.

This Beautiful Baby Girl Was Left to Die in A Plastic Bag, But God Sent an Angel to Save Her!

Doctors believe this beautiful girl was just a few hours old when she was abandoned outside, but God sent a Good Samaritan to rescue her. You won't believe her reaction when she is in the ambulance being saved. She is all smiles and laughter, even in a heart-wrenching situation like she was put in. A dogs scent was her savior when she was found.

Is It Wrong to Compete and Want to Win?

Competition brings many opportunities to glorify God, as we try to use our talents to their full potential and thus manifest the God-like abilities that he has granted to us, with thankfulness in our hearts to him. Competition enables each person to find a role in which he or she can make a positive contribution to society and thus a role in which people can work in a way that serves others by doing good for them. Competition is thus a sort of societal functioning of God’s attributes of wisdom and kindness, and it is a way society helps people discover God’s will for their lives. Competition also enables us individually to demonstrate fairness and kindness toward others, even those with whom we compete.

Day of the Dead Gets New Life

El Día de los Muertos—which originated in Mexico and is also observed in other Latin American countries—people gather to re-live experiences and share memories of those no longer with us. Though it focuses on the dead, it is not morbid, but rather the kind of “celebration of life” we might hold at a contemporary funeral or on the anniversary of someone’s death.

You and I have individual access to the God of the universe through prayer, and it's not as if we're reciting ritualistic chants in the hopes that an angry deity might consider our puny existence. No, by grace, we have a compassionate Heavenly Father who hears our prayer and responds in love for his glory and our good.

What Not to Say to Parents of Adopted Children

I understand your "support local" philosophy, but as someone who chose to adopt internationally, it was not an easy decision. The American foster care system is riddled with problems and often children's needs are not placed first. After talking to friends who have attempted to adopt through foster care, we realized this was not something we could handle. What am I referring to? Kids with countless placements, sometimes removed from foster homes on a whim or given back to bio parents who don't have it together yet. Also, bio parents still have rights over children while in the foster care system (like chosing not to do therapy or medicate or whatnot). Ultimately, it becomes an issue of knowing your own family situation and going into any adoption with open eyes. Knowing what we know about the foster care system and knowing our own pains made us realize we couldn't handle having multiple children in our home and then taken away again. This is coming from a background of infertility and we knew we couldn't have a baby one day and have them removed the next. So, yes, we chose to adopt 2 boys from Ethiopia with medical issues.

On Evolution, Pope Francis Speaks and the Media Get it Wrong

What can we take from this? Evolution occurs, but the Pope doesn't specify its extent or mechanism. He does place clear limits on the idea that evolution accounts for everything we see. He says firmly that God is the Creator of all things, including the universe at the time of the Big Bang, and all life as we know it. He truly creates, not as a demiurge or magician that manipulates existing matter, but rather as the Author and Creator of all things, including the very matter of the universe. This is nothing new, and is not a change in direction from previous popes, who have allowed discussion of evolution, with the clear understanding that our creation is from God, we are all descended from two first parents, and that we each receive our souls from God ( Humani Generis , 1950, Pope Pius XII).

Rick Santorum on Why We May Be 'One Generation Away' From Christian Persecution in America

"Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction," said Rick Santorum. "Every generation has to fight for it. We sort of feel that in America today with respect to what I think is the foundational freedom, the freedom of conscience, the freedom of religion. If you don't have the freedom of religion or the freedom of conscience than all these other freedoms really don't stack up to very much."

Navigating Genesis: Hugh Ross

Examining recent scientific discoveries, astronomer and pastor Dr. Hugh Ross explores the opening chapters in Genesis and shows how they hold some of the strongest scientific evidence for the Bible’s supernatural accuracy. Navigating Genesis expands upon Ross’ earlier book The Genesis Question (1998), integrating the message of both the Bible and science—without compromise—giving skeptics and believers common ground for dialogue.

His colleagues do not understand, George said, that he is "in the marriage fight, to fight for the marriage culture precisely because I want to fight poverty. When Bible Movies Aren’t ‘Biblically Accurate.'

There’s no indication that Scott is a religious individual, so we should not hold him—or anyone else in Hollywood making Bible movies—to the same standards as we do Christian scholars or pastors. These movies aren’t biblical commentaries or sermons. They’re entertainment. They are stories told by professional storytellers concerned with tension, dialogue, character development, action and sub-plots, not documentaries about ancient texts.

Is Gospel Amnesia Creating a Third Great Schism?

In their recent book Deep Church Rising: The Third Schism and the Recovery of Christian Orthodoxy , Andrew Walker and Robin Parry argue that, unbeknownst to many, the Western church is in the midst of a third great schism. Unlike the last two, though, the split hasn't resulted in a clear line between new denominations and old ones, but runs right through the various churches of the West. On one side stand those who affirm a broadly supernaturalist Christian orthodoxy embodied in the Nicene and Chalcedonian Creeds. And on the other, you find those who can at best recite the creeds with their fingers crossed. Having embraced the various presuppositions of Enlightenment and postmodern thinking, they are skeptical of supernatural claims and often doubt the very idea of objective truth.

Women and the Reformation: Hope, Silence, and Circumstance

It is Reformation Day and this year we are going to reflect upon a topic that is all-too-often overlooked: women in the Reformation. We shall consider the impact of women on the Reformation and the impact of the Reformation upon women from a theological perspective. I admit that covering such a broad topic within a blog post means I am very short on detail. I encourage readers to check out the sources at the end of this post in order to explore further avenues.

7 Bible Verses That We Can Meditate on During the Halloween Season

Many Christians have mixed feelings on this day, whether it is a day for ancient practices or a day of celebrating death and darkness. It seems most of the themes during Halloween are dark. But, that doesn't mean every Christian has to look at this day in that kind of way.

14 Ways I Teach Apologetics to My 5-Year-Olds

All kidding aside, it doesn’t have to be like that at all! Ideally, we should incorporate apologetics into the way we teach our kids about Christianity. Today I want to give you 14 examples of how I do that with my 5-year-old twins. Obviously, the details of how I communicate with them are age-specific, but I hope this will give you an idea of how the foundation of apologetics fits right into our regular Bible study time.

50 Satanism: A Taste for the Dark Side - Christian Research Institute

The problem is not that we as humans seek our own pleasure, happiness, or joy. The problem is that we as sinners look for it in the wrong places. Consider this analogy: Children always seek to eat only what tastes good to them. We, as adults, regret this in children and seek to wean them of this tendency. It is not that we adults think that eating should not include things that taste good. It is that we know that not everything that tastes good is good or is even food in the first place. Children’s understanding of nutrition and their tastes are not developed, however; therefore, they invariably resist eating what is good for them and desire what is not good for them or is even harmful. If children ate according to the philosophy of Satanism, then they would never deny themselves whatever tastes good regardless whether it has any nutritional value, like cotton candy, or, worse, they would eat something that tastes good but is poison. They also would refuse to eat what is good for them, all the while mocking and ridiculing those who did so eat.
