Is There Truth Beyond Science?

The Memorial Union lecture hall was packed full of UW Madison students who came to hear a Veritas Forum discussion between Dr. John Lennox and Dr. Larry Shapiro on: Is there is truth beyond science? Lennox is an Oxford Mathematician who has written several books on the justification of the Christian faith and is an international speaker on the subject. Shapiro is a UW Madison Philosophy Professor, and he has written on atheistic views that dismiss anything miraculous or supernatural. Both men were respectful of each other’s opposing views, and with wit and candor, discussed whether there can be truth beyond science. Lennox, obviously, whole-heartedly embraces truth beyond empiricism (the scientific method of knowledge), and Shapiro, of course, does not.

Q is not for passive listeners, but for active leaders hungry to shape the future of culture.

Our Silence Is Music to God’s Ears

These days, I crave more silence than ever. But stillness takes practice as the force of life pulls us along. It’s uncomfortable at first. When I’m quiet, things float up to the surface from the shadow places in my heart that I haven’t wanted to deal with. But after a time, I can tune my ears to hear the still, small whisper of God. In silence, prayer comes up as wordless petitions and attentive expectation. In this, we affirm that prayer is a two-way conversation. Silence is the waiting posture that helps us to be poised to hear God’s voice.

Inside the Museum of the Bible

Deploying the high-tech tour guides required developing an indoor navigation system that can locate any digital guide within four inches of its actual location in the museum—a technology that “didn’t really exist” when MOTB began to develop it and that opens new possibilities for museum accessibility, Schneider says. The digital guides can translate English-language placards on the fly and can reproduce signage text onscreen in large fonts or even read it aloud. Augmented reality also gives children a gamified, Pokémon-GO style experience of their parents’ itinerary that involves robots and a quest to dispel encroaching fog.

#ChristianUnity: What Real Christians of Every Tradition Share | The Stream

Well stated. As Mr Richards implies there is really no such thing as “liberal Christianity”. Sure, there are believers whose relative understanding of the scripture is no deterrent against philosophical positions that reject biblical concepts that contemporary culture supports. Disregard for the sanctity of life, transgender politics & practically every other cause celeb of the left illustrates this all too well. For these perhaps well meaning folk, their faith may be sincere , but they have yet to allow it to effect their lives very much. Until they come to terms w/the biblical mandate for a renewed mind, they will likely continue to skip down that politically correct path. Jesus prayed for a unity among believers that would transcend everything the world knows anything about. One reason the unbeliever has yet to know that God sent Jesus into this world & has loved them is because they’ve yet to see much if any real unity across the wide spectrum of expressions of the faith. For that matter the Master questioned whether or not He would find faith on the earth upon His return.

Why Apologetics Has a Bad Name

Apologists often overstate their case . There is a huge temptation to overstate the evidence for the Bible, intelligent design, the resurrection of Jesus or any other apologetic issue. I have succumbed to this myself. In our eagerness to convince non-believers, or our desire to strengthen fellow Christians, we can all fall prey to the temptation to state things more certainly than they may be. In our information age, people have access to counterarguments and perspectives at the tip of their fingers. We also live in a skeptical age where people who say things with dogmatism are often considered suspect. This does not mean the evidence for Christianity is not compelling. It is. But there are smart, thoughtful people that disagree. And we must acknowledge this, or we’ll set up people—especially young people—for failure.

Q & A with Dr. Craig: Fine Tuning and Different Laws of Nature

Q: Hi Dr. Craig, I have been watching your excursus on natural theology and am up to the part about teleology. You mention an objection to the argument, that we could have other natural laws and it could be more probable than not, with other sets of laws, that life permitting universes do exist just by chance. You say we just don't know the answer here.

Can Christianity Be Trusted Given All Its “Sins”?

Second, many who claim to be Christians have not placed their faith and trust in Jesus Christ and therefore do not truly know him. Jesus taught that both believers and non- believers would be part of the institutional church, but that their true identity would not be revealed until the end (Matt. 13:24–30). He also taught that there would be people who thought they were acting in his name—even doing “many wonders,” but they will not enter the kingdom of God (Matt. 7:21–23). Just because someone claims to be a Christian, then, does not mean he or she really is. Could it be that the church is often indicted for the actions of people who are not even Christians? This is why the standard of Scripture is so important. Ultimately, we need to compare the actions of both individuals and the corporate church with the genuine teachings of the Bible.

Johnny Cash and the Evangelical Fascination with Celebrities

The temptation of celebrity, however, has routinely caused problems as evangelicals have platformed people who have only a distant grasp of evangelical beliefs, and who show little sign of conversion, or of personal devotion to Christ and the church. Sometimes evangelical leaders have also given their blessing to celebrities who have brought embarrassment to the evangelical movement by issues in their personal lives, or when their faith turns out to be a short-lived “Christian phase.”

The Final Authority

The reason that we can be sure that our being made spiritually alive, and God’s being 100% for us in Christ, is by God’s grace alone, on the basis of Christ alone, received through faith alone, all to the glory of God, is because God wrote a book. God’s word then, not a pope’s, parent’s, or popular opinion, has final authority.

Every Good Mom Dies

I didn’t expect death when I first became a mother. I was surprised by the dark struggle. But now being pregnant with my third, I’m better equipped to embrace it. The death I felt with my first has turned into anticipation with my third. I know there will still be hardship ahead, but I’m more confident of God’s grace toward me, more willing to admit my weakness, and more ready to be spent and broken for him and my baby girl. God has birthed life from my death, thereby making me more like Christ. I have been able to experience the death and resurrection of Jesus by walking through the door to motherhood.

Why the Information in Our DNA Points to the Existence of God | Cold Case Christianity

The more we learn about the origin of life in our universe, the more reasonable the case for God’s existence. The building blocks of life (proteins, ribosomes, enzymes etc.) are formed at the direction of specific nucleotide sequencing in DNA, the largest molecule known. In humans, DNA contains as many as 10 billion atoms. The adenine, guanine, cytosine, and thymine bases in DNA are linked in a particular order to form the genetic code containing the master plan for every organism. The information in DNA guides and instructs the formation of proteins; without it, protein formation would be a haphazard, hit-or-miss proposal. The nucleic sequence in DNA is informational .

Best Friends Make the Worst Enemies

But the same love that holds and heals us in the wake of betrayal also frees us from having to administer justice. God, in unparalleled love, not only promises never to leave or betray us, but he also promises to punish every sin committed against us — either in the horrors of hell or in the death of his Son. As you wait for him to act, remember that your Judge intimately knows your pain. Jesus was not only betrayed to death by one of the worst of his twelve closest friends, he was also denied three times by one of the best — and then abandoned by the rest.

The Average Person You Know Probably Isn’t Hostile towards Christianity | Oklahoma Apologetics Alliance

The average people we know and talk with about Christianity usually aren’t the hostile people we encounter in the media and social media. Because of the access we have to those forums, we can get a skewed sense of what people think about religion and Christianity. Media amplifies certain voices, and, according to the survey, anti-Christian voices have more money to amplify their viewpoints. They also have more money to bankroll social and legal campaigns. So it’s not as though this is a benign trend.

Of Fairy Tales and Stranger Things | Think Christian

Stranger Things reflects this kingdom theology, and in doing so departs from the classic fairy tales that it otherwise evokes, with their happily-ever-after-endings. In contrast to traditional, tidily packaged offerings, the Duffer brothers tell a story in which hope and loss, life and death, joy and pain coexist. They seem to be working in the tradition of J.R.R. Tolkien, who said , “The realm of fairy-story is wide and deep and high and filled with many things … beauty that is an enchantment, and an ever-present peril; both joy and sorrow as sharp as swords.”

Harvey Weinstein and the Crisis of Masculinity

David was blinded from his lust from seeing a woman as a God-honoring woman. His failure of masculinity (in fact, his failure as ruler) was in failing to protect her obedience to God. And this is at the heart of our crisis of masculinity today: men whose self-centeredness cannot appreciate the holy beauty of a woman’s act of obedience to God’s call over her life. Whether it is an actress God has called and gifted to act, or a female gifted by God to sing and perform on stage, or a woman working under the authority of a powerful male boss, every woman must be protected for her obedience to God’s design for her life.

Why John Piper Abominates the Prosperity Gospel

What to expect when pastoring your first church — Southern Equip

It’s good to be an imperfect, gospel-preaching church, a church that is less than our ideal. It’s good for us to have our preferences to rub up against reality. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t lead with vision and purpose and intentionality, but our leadership should not be that of an impersonal CEO, a hard-charging, arrogant ranch hand, but that kind of ministry that gently, but firmly shepherds.

Anti-Intellectualism in the Church - Christian Research Institute

In part because of our focus on feelings, much of the church still focuses excessively on “felt needs” in both outreach and teaching. There is a proper place for this, but often Christians and those we are trying to reach have deep spiritual needs that they don’t feel. Moreover, we can tend to misdiagnose people’s felt needs. Several years ago, I spoke at a large conference for Christian college students on responding to the problem of evil. There were hundreds of students packed into a hotel ballroom, and we had an excellent discussion. The next year, the conference organizers decided not to offer this presentation again. However, there were multiple sessions on love, sex, and dating. Teaching on how Christians ought to approach these areas of life is essential, and certainly it is important for college students. If we are seeking to equip students to minister on a secular college campus, however, knowing some of the main replies that Christians have given to why God allows evil and suffering is also important. When students are challenged in class by a professor or their peers to explain how a good and loving God could allow evil, the need to know some replies will quickly be felt.

The Christian Mandate to Subvert Tribalism

Lest I get overly theoretical, ideological conflict has manifested itself under my own roof in the past two years. Much of this has existed between my live-in mother-in-law and myself, but it’s also affected my marriage. When I retreated into online forums with more likeminded people after the election, I fell more deeply into a trap of contemptuous tribalism and perpetual agitation. The relationships in my innermost circle suffered. In the interest of prioritizing the people whom God had given me to love, I made some radical changes. I left all my online affinity groups and deleted over 250 cause-driven connections, redirecting my energy toward being present to people in my real life, even when it was hard. Through the discipline of active listening and presence, I rediscovered the healing and transformative power of nuance. Called by Jesus to be peacemakers—meek, righteousness, merciful, and pure in heart (Matt. 5:5–9)—pursuing nuance is both a sacred journey and obedience to Christ.

Keep Looking

One reason we see so little when we read the Bible is that we do not give ourselves long enough to look. John Piper shares the story “Agassiz and the Fish” in his new book Reading the Bible Supernaturally . In the seemingly ordinary act of reading the Bible, something miraculous happens: God gives us new eyes to see more of him — if we are willing to slow down and keep looking.

When I Lost a Daughter, My Children Lost a Sister

At the time, I knew only one other family that had lost a child—friends whose baby had died of SIDS. But I was too encumbered by my own grief to ask how they had handled theirs or to seek help. In the years since, I’ve learned that my experience of isolation is common among grieving parents. Another mom, Kim Findlay, of Crystal Lake, Illinois, told me she felt similarly bewildered about how to go on after her five-year-old daughter, Emma, died in a house fire. Her surviving daughter, then an adolescent, met briefly with a school social worker but is still working through her grief 12 years later and struggles with anxiety and depression.
