Watch Oprah and Colbert Discuss Their Favorite Bible Verses

TV host and network executive Oprah Winfrey recently visited The Late Show to talk about her network’s upcoming series about world religions called Belief. While chatting with host Stephen Colbert (who is a devout Catholic), Oprah discussed her passion for the Christian Scriptures and how she was labeled a "preacher girl" as a child. While Colbert said that his favorite verse is Matthew 6:27, Oprah explained why Psalms 37:4 means the most to her, relating it to philosophies like karma and "the third law of motion.”

Pres. Obama: We Have to Take the Black Lives Matter Movement Seriously

Yesterday, President Obama spoke to law enforcement officials at the White House forum on criminal justice, and took some time to address and defend the Black Lives Matter movement. The phrase has become a rallying cry among activists calling for reforms in law enforcement and the criminal justice system after the several high-profile cases of unarmed black men and women being killed by police or while in police custody. President Obama directly addressed critics who have countered by insisting that “all lives matter." The president explained: Black Lives Matter is a social media movement that tried to gel around Ferguson, the Eric Garner case and some other cases that came up. And very rapidly, it was posited as being in opposition to the police. And sometimes, like any of these loose organizations, some people pop-off and say dumb things. On the other hand though, it started being lifted as “These folks are opposed to police. They’re opposed to cops, and ‘All Lives Matter.’” So the notion was, somehow saying “Black Lives Matter” was reverse racism or suggesting that other people’s lives didn’t matter, or police officers’ lives didn’t matter. And whenever we get bogged down in that type of discussion, we know where that goes … I think everybody understands all lives matter. I think the reason that the organizers used the phrase 'Black Lives Matter' was not because they were suggesting nobody else's lives matter. Rather, what they were suggesting was there is a specific problem that's happening in the African-American community that's not happening in other communities. And that is a legitimate issue that we've got to address. The president praised “the overwhelming majority of law enforcement” who he said are “doing the right thing and want to do the right thing.” He also said he recognizes “that police officers have a really tough job and we're sending them into really tough neighborhoods that sometimes are really dangerous and they've got to make split-second decisions.” He also said other large social issues should be acknowledged. “We as a society, if we're not investing in opportunities for poorer kids, and then we expect police and and prosecutors to keep them out of sight and out of mind, that's a failed strategy.” Still, he insisted that the issue must not be politicized and that the issue of police violence is a serious one, and that the concerns of the Black Lives Matter movement must be addressed: But having said all that, we as a society, particularly given our history, have to take this seriously. And one of the ways of avoiding the politics of this and losing the moment is everybody just stepping back for a second and understanding that the African-American community is not just making this up. It’s not just something being politicized. It's real and there's a history behind it and we have to take it seriously. You can watch the entire discussion below:

This Pooping Dessert Is Exactly What No One Wants After Their Meal

What? You haven’t tried a cartoon-character themed dessert that poops chocolate as you eat it? This just in: your life has been pretty empty until now. It (he?) also barfs sweet custard, just in case the pooping thing didn’t trigger all your body function phobias. If you're not already overly grossed out, check out the video below.

Bride’s Family Throws Feast for the Homeless Community After Groom Cancels Wedding

Here’s a heartbreaking story that still has somewhat of a happy ending. A couple in Sacramento spent 10s of thousands of dollars preparing for their wedding this weekend, booking a 4-star hotel to host a giant reception feast. But when the groom got cold feet just days before and called off the union, the bride’s family decided to go ahead with the party. They invited families from local homeless shelters to come and enjoy the banquet-style meal instead. One of the more than 90 people who came out for the free feast told local station KCRA, “When you’re going through a hard time and a struggle, for you to get out and do something different and with your family … It’s really a blessing."

This Crazy Geyser Looks Like Something Out of a Sci-Fi Movie

Here’s a look at a massive, strange geyser in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, that doesn’t even look like something that could exist on earth. The Fly Geyser is a constantly evolving formation, that frequently changes colors and shapes. As the clip explains, it was accidentally created when a power company caused an underground sulfuric water leak, eventually leading to the formation of the limestone structure. Because of all of the algae on its surface, it constantly changes colors. Take and moment, and have your mind blown.

You Know You Were a ’90s Church Kid If …

The ’90s was to Christian music what the 2000s was to Creed and/or Nickelback: a golden age of music you would later hate yourself for (still) loving. Friday night rolled around, and instead of doing something lame, you and your friends loaded up into your church’s Ford Econoline, and stopped for some Chick-fil-A to pre-game for the Christian moshing you were about to do. If you don’t know what “Christian moshing” is, imagine a mosh pit made up of Peanuts characters.

No major damage as Hurricane Patricia remnants move north

The Mexican government on Saturday afternoon lifted its emergency alert after Patricia, one of the strongest storms ever to make landfall, weakened rapidly. No deaths were initially reported as emergency crews made their way into the hardest-hit areas. This capital of the state of Jalisco — ground zero for the storm's arrival on shore late Friday — was wet with some storm debris Saturday morning but mostly unscathed from the system's wrath. Some homes in the area where the storm came ashore were flooded but authorities said the damage appeared to be far less than anticipated given the storm's power.

Your Husband’s Infidelity Is Not Your Fault

A recent blog post from Anna Duggar’s mother-in-law Michelle carries that implication. When asked to share marital advice, the mom of 19 said that wives should always be available to meet their husbands’ sexual needs, even when they are exhausted or pregnant. “He can get his lunch somewhere else,” Duggar wrote. “But you are the only one who can meet that special need that he has in his life for intimacy…. So be available, and not just available, but be joyfully available for him. Smile and be willing to say, ‘Yes, sweetie I am here for you,’ no matter what.”

4 Why Don’t Christians Talk About Sex After Marriage?

We could do a better job and have a sex-talk that is more than the usual "don’t have sex" talk. We seem to think that we’ve done our job if we’re sending our young people into the marriage bed as virgins. But things don't always happen that way, and even if they do, being a virgin doesn’t guarantee that you’ll have a good sex life. Either way, the amount of conversations I have had with young couples who have struggled with their sex life is staggering. And often, they feel like they don't have many places to turn to for help. Sex is found in a lot of areas of Scripture. It was designed by God. And we Christians need to speak up about it, in non-judgemental, honest ways.

5 5 Keys to Surviving a Breakup

Getting over things is easy, or keeping busy also, but feeling, identifying the emotion and dealing with why you feel that way is difficult and requires maturity and maturity as a Christian. God did say we should make peace with each other, be kind, merciful, compassionate, slow to anger and most of all loving. Revelation Chapter 3 says the church will reject things that would otherwise make them Godly. Your heart and mind needs to be renewed by God, therefore the mature approach is to ask for forgiveness where you've hurt someone. Figure out why you acted like you did. Don't run away from healing and healing your ex, be an example for the world. However if your ex was abusive it's often best to stay away from such people.

9 Tolkien's annotated map of Middle-earth discovered inside copy of Lord of the Rings

The map was found loose in a copy of the acclaimed illustrator Pauline Baynes’ copy of The Lord of the Rings. Baynes had removed the map from another edition of the novel as she began work on her own colour Map of Middle-earth for Tolkien, which would go on to be published by Allen & Unwin in 1970. Tolkien himself had then copiously annotated it in green ink and pencil, with Baynes adding her own notes to the document while she worked.

10 8 Stats that Expose the Gender Pay Gap

I'm a woman and I actually make about 5k per year more than my male counterparts right out of college, and I make the same as my husband who is 4 years older. Why? I negotiated my pay. A lot of women don't know to do that or they are scared to, and I think that causes some amount of pay-gap. Certainly it exists in other forms, but in my industry (tech) the playing field is very level.

Tips for Studying the Bible - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

That’s why for me, as a new Christian, apologetics websites were just as important as the skeptic sites I had been visiting. I wanted to get some balance and some clear thinking on the issues we know are inherent to the Christian worldview. I found myself applying the same skepticism I had as a detective, and an atheist, to my own examination of Scripture. Here is my approach to answering some of my own questions about Christian doctrine, and Christian evidence. These are principles and tools that may help you sort out the truth for yourself. To help you remember, each of them start with the letter “D”. First, some qualities I think are important as a student of the Bible:

Pray for daily reminders that each individual is a person with hopes and dreams and a future. Pray for guidance to become the servant God has called each and everyone one of us to be. Piper calls it “the immeasurable moment” — that instance in reading when we come across a sentence or phrase that unleashes a new glimpse of truth. The lights go on. We read it and reread it. 5 good reasons to read the entire Bible every year

During my lengthier-than-I-first-intended career as a seminary student, I followed the same practice and after a few years, I had read through the Bible several times. The results have been massively helpful for both my walk with the Lord and the teaching and preaching ministry he has given me. More recently, comments by two of my ministry heroes, John Piper and R. C. Sproul, have encouraged me to continue this approach to Bible intake. Piper: “When all your favorite preachers are gone, and their books are forgotten, you will have your Bible. Master it.” And then, there are these manly words from Dr. Sproul: “I’ll retire when they pry my cold, dead fingers off my Bible.” Words like those encourage me to stay saturated in God’s Word. Reading through it perennially is one means of accomplishing that.

27 God Doesn’t Care How Big Your Platform Is

God’s type of greatness doesn’t appear powerful in the world’s eyes, and it’s certainly not sexy. But it’s the kind of greatness that Jesus lived out when He walked the earth—the truest kind of greatness there is. So instead of looking to our phones and our screens for what greatness we might be able to create for ourselves, let’s seek true greatness in our own lives: serving and loving those around us, right where we are.

28
The Great Missionary Hope

The great missionary hope is that when the gospel is preached in the power of the Holy Spirit, God himself does what man cannot do — he creates the faith that saves. The call of God does what the call of man can’t. It raises the dead. It creates spiritual life. It is like the call of Jesus to Lazarus in the tomb, “Come forth!” (John 11:43).

29
The tone of preaching

Striking the right tone, like all aspects of preaching, requires persistent vigilance, but a few steps of action can promote a more balanced and helpful approach. First, watch others preach and specifically analyze how they speak as much as what they say. Consciously evaluate their tone as well as their content. Then, when you have developed sensitivity to the tone of others, watch a video of yourself. Video never lies. It will present exactly what you projected. Do you seem timid, or arrogant, or angry? Does your audience feel that you identify with their struggles or that you haughtily sit in judgment of them? Does your tone draw them in or turn them off? Try to be honest with yourself about yourself.

A Good Shepherd for Needy Sheep

The hope of all who look to heaven for help sings, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Ps. 23:6). Beyond everything I can see right now, and lasting forever, is a gift that can satisfy and protect me long after all my enemies are dead and gone. That gift is God himself. He is the goodness better than any good we’ve seen or heard or tasted here (Ps. 16:11), and he is the shelter safer than any government or laws or armies in any nation on earth. The promises of our Shepherd flood every valley in this life with light, and reveal the path to never-ending, never-waning, never-in-danger-again peace and happiness.

The Infanticide of Exodus and Abortion of Today

Miriam represents the role most of us will play. Most of us may never have to contemplate abortion, but all of us need to pursue relationships with women who might find themselves facing that difficult decision. To play the part of Miriam in this world means there must be proximity—a closeness to the woman in crisis. And yes, this means we may have to step outside our community of people who look like us, talk like us, and act like us.

33 Why Are We So Obsessed with Celebrity Tragedy?

We Christians should engage with celebrity culture in a different way. Maybe we should rethink the societal temptation to put people on pedestals. Maybe we should abandon voyeurism as entertainment. We definitely shouldn’t be enjoying celebrity downfalls.

Are you a Lakers fan who has followed and cared about Lamar Odom’s career? Pray for him. He’s a real person who has walked through a lifetime of loss. He deserves to experience something more profound than just being the target of tabloid journalism. Like the rest of us, he needs to experience the touch of the living God.

34 Awareness Is Not Enough

To avoid discouraging those who sincerely desire to be involved but don’t know where to begin, Yang coined a useful diagnostic spectrum: People begin in apathy toward global needs and justice issues; as they learn about great needs around the world, they move to awareness; from there, they shift to activism, taking actions to make others aware of needs; and finally, they launch into advocacy, fighting for “the least of these” around the world.

Muhammad Marries His Adopted Son's Ex-Wife: David Wood vs. Shabir Ally

http://www.answeringmuslims.com Muhammad had an adopted son named Zayd, who was called "Zayd bin Muhammad" ("Zayd, son of Muhammad"). One day, Muhammad went to visit him and was greeted by Zayd's wife, Zaynab, who was extremely attractive, and who was wearing very little clothing at the time. Here's what happened according to al-Tabari: "She jumped up in haste and excited the admiration of the Messenger of God, so that he turned away murmuring something that could scarcely be understood. However, he did say overtly: 'Glory be to God the Almighty! Glory be to God, who causes hearts to turn!'" (The History of al-Tabari, Volume VIII, p. 2) When Zayd found out that Muhammad was attracted to his wife, he decided to divorce her. Muhammad, of course, was worried about what people might think, so he told Zayd to keep his wife for himself. However, Zaynab learned that Muhammad was attracted to her, and she began despising her husband. Zayd, wanting to give his adopted father whatever he desired, divorced his wife. Muhammad was still worried about what people might think if he married Zaynab, but then he began receiving revelations to justify the marriage.

Who Interprets Scripture? Sola Scriptura, the Reformation, and the modern era: Reformation Review

Second, Anabaptists and others argued that  sola scriptura  meant that every single individual Christian could read and understand the Bible for themselves. How was this problematic? Well, if every Christian could understand every part of the Bible, then there was no way to arbitrate between differing interpretations of soteriology (doctrine of salvation), eschatology (doctrine of the end times), and the like. Of course, not all of these interpretations could be correct, and if those who had argued for the individualism of Scriptural interpretation were correct, then they could all be right, in some sense. Furthermore, the issue was exacerbated in that because no one had the authority to proclaim what doctrines were correct, the church began to increasingly split  to the point that “the radical Reformation was not a unified movement, but rather a chorus of protest against the clergy, secular authorities, and Reformers such as Luther and Zwingli. It was a reservoir for uncompromising protest that could well up in the most varied social circles… ‘Within the turmoiled flood of radical reform or restitution the fresh vitalities of the Reformation… were borne along swiftly to radical extremes'” (Carter Lindberg,  The European Reformations, 213, cited below).

40 Oakland Threatens to Fine Church Over Gospel Music

Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in West Oakland, Calif., may soon face large fines from the city for singing gospel music. Pastors recently received a letter saying that gospel choir practice “activity may constitute a public nuisance due to its impact to the use and quiet enjoyment of the surrounding community’s property.” The city has threatened them with thousands of dollars worth of fines if the practices continue. However, as the church’s head pastor told CBS SF , the choir has never been an issue before: “Kind of hard to believe because we’ve been here about 65 years in the community and all of a sudden we get some concerns about the noise.” Some critics of the move say that the fine is further evidence of on-going gentrification around the Bay Area, where property prices have been skyrocketing. The pastor of nearby Community Church told reporters , “We’re being bought out. We’re being moved out. We are being priced out of our own neighborhood.” According to sfist.com, despite the threat of fines, the church plans on continuing to hold choir practice.

45 Several Predominantly Black Churches Have Been Set on Fire Near Ferguson

Investigators in St. Louis are trying to figure out who is setting predominantly black churches on fire not far from the city of Ferguson. The area was home to massive protests after the shooting of unarmed black teen Michael Brown by a white police officer last summer. The fire department and local police say the motive for the fires still remains unclear, but have said it is possible that religious or racial hatred "is part of the dynamic” in the string of arsons.

It was a miracle that our localization team was able to handle the first game at all considering the volume of text in the game, not to mention all the other releases we were working on at the time, and the only way to get it done was to have our po’ main Trails editor, Jess (aka H.Protoganist), work from home for the final 6 months so she could edit it essentially 24/7 without worrying about commute times.

If you want to know what's ahead for America, look north to Canada

Well, I wish more pro-lifers down here were as aware of the effects of laws and policies on life plans. If you read the rest of her post, McKenzie clearly has some kind of pro-life plan there, and it’s a good one in that it’s practical and evidence based. She intends to get results. But she’s not looking inside at her own feelings and thoughts when she makes these life plans, she’s looking at politics and laws and trying to anticipate where the threats will come from, and how to adjust. I wish pro-lifers here were more like that… especially when it comes to size of government. We need to keep our own money and not give it to the government. We need to keep the government away from our rights, e.g. – free speech and religious liberty.

“I still remember the first time I was in awe of God. It came after years of attending churches and calling myself ‘Christian.’ It was a major turning point in my life. It is an awe of God that inspires my major life decisions as well as my daily actions. Thank you, Paul, for getting beyond symptoms and getting at the heart of the matter. This book is brilliant, and I wish every believer would read it carefully. We live in a crazy time. We need books like this to help lay healthy foundations for our lives, so that we don’t spend our days overreacting to unpredictable events.” Francis Chan ,   New York Times best-selling author, Crazy Love and Forgotten God
