Winter Is Coming: Mark Burnett, Roma Downey Launch $25 Million Plan To Help Christians in Iraq and Syria

While I had been to the region many times—our Center for Women, Faith & Leadership, for example, grew out of our partnership with an all-women’s college in Hama, Syria—I never fully appreciated the practical role that Christians play in the Middle East. In general, their millennia presence, through their example of loving all neighbors, contributes to the spiritual and social well-being of societies across the Middle East (not least through well-educated leaders in government and the academy, serving all citizens). As such, they are a bridge between and among different faiths, and traditions within those faiths. Such action, if allowed to flourish, strengthens society by preventing stereotypes that might be manipulated by terrorists; indeed, loving neighbor enhances the stability of the state. Equally important, though, Christians in the Middle East serve as a bridge back to Christian-majority countries, helping people like me to better understand their region, and how best to come alongside the people who live there, in support of their solutions.

15 Things to Start Doing By the Time You’re 30

Who ever formulated the "15 Things To Start Doing by age 30" is a FOOLISH BUILDER in this case as referred by Jesus.I wish i could get one or 2 people to read & understand my comment. My brothers and sisters here, please just know one thing. You do not own yourselves, Some one else owns you.And who is He? The Supreme Omnipotent Creator God. Just like Land Cruiser is owned by Toyota as the manufacturer,so is you reading this comment. God owns you.One day,you will be called (through death) to give accountability to him for the way you have conducted your self in the world He put you in. He has also provided a way through which me and you can reach Him. That way is ONLY one not 2 not 3 but ONE and that is Jesus Christ our Lord & Savior. So if the 15 things i see here do not involve Him,all is to no avail .So let Number one be" By age 30,one should have recognized that Jesus Christ is the ONLY savior to man-kind and MUST have accepted Him as his/her Personal Savior. He is the ONLY way to Heaven, not Mohammed, not Buddha, not Confusios, not Joseph Smith, not any Religion but a relationship with Jesus.

Of Course the Government Should Force Churches to Perform Gay Weddings

There has been a lot of outrage from radical right wing circles this week, as slobbering fundamentalist bigots in backwards cesspools like Texas and Idaho are finally being called to task for their anti-gay hatred. Conservative Christians are about the only thing we should hate more than bigotry, so it’s about time we start cracking down on these cretins.

Some mammals can move their ears in different directions to pinpoint the locations of sounds. This is especially important to small animals that don't have a great view of their surroundings because they're so close to the ground. They also come in handy when someone's trying to mount your skull above their fireplace.

Leading evangelical ethicist David Gushee is now pro-LGBT. Here's why it matters. - On Faith & Culture

Luther, this has nothing to do with the size of God. It’s bout the WILL of God. Do some reading..some research…and you’ll discover this idea that God is changing gays to straight is nuts. Look at Exodus Intl. Look at the countless “ex-gay’ leaders that have completely recanted their previous positions, livelihoods..and ADMITTED they were lying at worst, willfully deceived at best. Read TORN by Justin Lee. It’s all out there. God isn’t changing gays straight, because he has no interest in doing so anymore than changing blue eyes to brown. What I’m pointing out above is that people like you (I was one of you for 27 years, I understand your conditioning trust me!) are not (repeat not) going to change anybody’s mind who has already formed or reformed their opinion on this matter. Like so many believers, I, too have discovered, by reason and by the leading of the Holy Spirit through scripture, that you’re side (my old side) is just dead wrong on this matter. So, essentially, you’re wasting your time espousing your antiquated and misappropriated perpsective of SOME scriptures.

Paul Tripp Health Update

We are thankful to announce that Paul's condition has improved dramatically. His infection is almost clear, and his kidneys will fully recover without the need for any further treatment. While he must remain in the hospital for a few more days for continued observation, Paul is well on his way to a full recovery.

Grace to You

He also warned the Ephesian church, saying, "I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish [warn] each one with tears" (Acts 20:29-32). He did that by declaring to them the whole counsel of God (v. 27).

Burning Questions

Episode 1: Is There a God? Perhaps the biggest burning question of them all is this one: Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there? That’s a hotly debated question. On the one hand, our culture has recently seen a resurgent atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane and irrational. Yet for all of that, belief in God seems alive and well. Over 90% of people in the world say they do believe in a higher power. The question simply will not go away: Is there a God?

North Carolina Judge Resigns So He Won't Have To Conduct Gay Marriages, Thinks Other Magistrates Will Do The Same

The US Is Suffering From An STD Epidemic

For some diseases, such as chlamydia, the number of new infections in a given year is higher than the number of existing infections. That's because the new infections that are diagnosed and treated are not counted in the estimate of existing infections, said Elizabeth Torrone, a researcher at the CDC's center for STDs. On the other hand, viruses such as HIV cause life-long infections, and so the number of existing infections is much higher than the number of new cases yearly.

Clergy Appreciation | Thriving Pastor

We believe that the concept of clergy appreciation started with the Apostle Paul as he was establishing the first Christian churches. In 1 Timothy, he wrote, “The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching” (1 Tim. 5:17). And, in 1 Thessalonians, he said, “Respect those who work hard among you, who are over you in the Lord and who admonish you. Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work” (1 Thess. 5:12-13).   Accordingly, over the centuries, decades and years, pastors have been recognized and honored, either formally or informally, by many denominations and local churches at various times of the year. It has been a long-standing practice.   Focus on the Family named and began emphasizing Clergy Appreciation Month in 1994, reminding congregations that it was biblical and proper to honor their pastoral staffs and pastoral families throughout the year, but suggesting that they set aside the month of October for a special tangible tribute. For those churches that preferred a single weekend, we recommended the second weekend of the month.

When Rural Traditions Get Hipster Cred

In our rural community, the months of August, September, and October were spent “putting up” food from our large garden. They were spent in sweltering kitchens, gathering around pyramids of steaming corn and sheering off the sticky, sweet kernels in neat rows. Pots of tomato sauce simmered on the stove while over by the sink, freshly washed mason jars stood at attention, waiting to be filled. This particular day, we were plowing through a mountain of green beans, and I voiced my teenage frustration with the unfairness of it all. My aunt looked me in the eye and said, “If you don’t want to snap beans when you grow up, you’ll have to marry a doctor.” I ended up marrying a pastor who is called to rural ministry. A funny thing has happened since then: country living became chic. Doctors’ wives now snap beans right alongside farmers’ wives—not because they have to but because they choose to. In attempt to live sustainably with local food sources, more people are rediscovering traditional food preservation techniques, prompting MarketWatch to name canning “the year’s hottest food trend.

31 Does Knowledge Require Certainty? | Reasonable Faith

Notice that they equate knowledge with certainty. If you’re not certain that some proposition p is true, then you do not know that p . But what justification is there for that assumption? I know that I have a head, for example. But I could be a brain in a vat of chemicals being stimulated by a mad scientist to think that I have a body. Does this mere possibility imply that I do not know that I have a head? If your friends answer, “Yes,” ask them for their justification for thinking that knowledge requires certainty. Anything they say, you can reply to by asking, “Are you certain of that?” If they say, “No,” then they don’t know that knowledge requires certainty. If they say, “Yes,” then it’s not true after all that we can’t know anything about life, the universe, or logic.

What the Ebola Panic Reminds Us About Worry

With the end of this quarantine should come a soothing realization: Ebola is not easy to catch. Because Ebola is transmitted through bodily fluids, it requires physical contact with such fluids. And because patients are only contagious when they show symptoms, it can’t be transmitted by someone who doesn’t feel sick. Two nurses who treated Duncan have contracted the disease, but those with whom he had closest contact outside the hospital have not developed symptoms—and now they are considered beyond the virus’ incubation period.

Ten quick responses to atheist claims

If you want to question the morality of the Bible, what basis does that morality have? There can be a serious contradiction within atheist criticisms. Dawkins wrote: "In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference."

Study: Listening to Music While You Work Makes You More Efficient

A ccording to new research, listening to music at work actually makes you better at your job. The study found that workers preformed their tasks better if they were listening to music. More than 80% of those involved in the study had more accurate test results and worked faster if they had music going. It should be noted, that the study was conducted by “Mindlab International on behalf of MusicWorks, the joint campaign from music licensing companies PRS for Music and PPL,” according to The Telegraph . We’re not saying it’s biased, but the people behind the research definitely had a stake in the results. Either way, we’re not going to argue with it. Science doesn’t lie, right? ...

Suffering in seminary: ‘A demonstration of God’s resurrection power’

“Crises are gifts from a loving Father for the purpose of reminding us of our weakness,” Pierre, now also dean of students, said in a recent interview. “Rather than think about a crisis as a setback to preparation for ministry, seminary students should see it as a leap forward in preparation for ministry because God prepares us primarily by meeting us in our brokenness as a demonstration of his resurrection power.”

When Punishment Isn't the Point

One positive example of how this can work is the civil rights movement. In law schools, we talk a lot about the two great laws that were enacted thanks to the movement: the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and the Voting Rights Act of 1965. But changing the law wasn’t Martin Luther King’s primary objective. He was trying to change hearts. King fought and eventually died for the right to have relationship with those who refused to have relationship with him. He wasn’t trying to put anyone in prison. In fact, he and his fellow protestors went to prison themselves in their quest to create true relationship in our communities. The true heart of the movement was relationship, not law.

Sex and Sunday School

So what did David do wrong? (Which brought me back to where I started: trying not to explain sex to someone else’s five-year-old.) I think the original Sunday school script got at least one thing right; the seventh commandment is about the sanctity of marriage. And to explain David’s sin to our kids, we have to be clear that his sin was breaking God’s law for marriage.

42
Are Commercial Transactions Inherently Shady?

Therefore we should not look at commercial transactions as a necessary evil or something just morally neutral. Rather, commercial transactions are i n themselves good because through them we do good to other people. This is because of the amazing truth that, in most cases, voluntary commercial transactions benefit both parties. If I sell you a copy of my book for $12, then I get something that I want more than that copy of the book: I get your $12. So I am better off than I was before, when I had too many copies of that book, copies that I was never going to read. And I am happy. But you got something that you wanted more than your $12. You wanted a copy of my book, which you did not have. So you are better off than you were before, and you are happy. Thus by giving us the ability to buy and sell, God has given us a wonderful mechanism through which we can do good for each other. We should be thankful for this process every time we buy or sell something. We can honestly see buying and selling as one means of loving our neighbor as ourself.

Altar Calls: Are They a Biblical Approach?

Let me begin by saying that anytime we give an honest appeal for a person to turn to God, it's a good thing. But in our zeal to "get people into the kingdom," we sometimes run the risk of offering false assurance. This is a very real danger in the church today. Many come forward after a sermon, but do they change? Often, it's the "I'll give Jesus a try" attitude, rather than a broken heart desperately seeking a Savior — the American gospel versus the true gospel.

47 New Book Discusses Scientific and Theological Problems with Darwinian Evolution

Though many of the other contributions in the book are theological, discussing ways to interpret the Bible from an "old earth" perspective, my entry is strictly scientific, and only discusses scientific problems with evolutionary science. My chapter's title is "The Top Ten Scientific Problems with Biological and Chemical Evolution," originally inspired by my two posts " What Are the Top Ten Problems with Darwinian Evolution? " and " Top Five Problems with Current Origin-of-Life Theories ." However, the version in the book expands greatly on some of the points there. I list the following problems: Problem 1: No viable mechanism to generate a primordial soup. Problem 2: Unguided chemical processes cannot explain the origin of the genetic code. Problem 3: Random mutations cannot generate the genetic information required for irreducibly complex structures. Problem 4: Natural selection struggles to fix advantageous traits into populations. Problem 5: Abrupt appearance of species in the fossil record does not support Darwinian evolution. Problem 6: Modern biology has failed to yield a grand "tree of life.
