Should Christian Marriage Chapels Be Legal? Should They Even Exist?

Let’s look at this question first as the church. The husband and wife involved are ordained Foursquare Church ministers, who marry people at a chapel they manage. We disagree with them, strongly, about the wedding chapel business. One of us has been arguing for years that the “marrying parson” in every community trivializes both the gospel and the authority of the church. A minister is not a civil servant but a representative of Christ’s church. He should officiate a wedding only in cases where the couple are under the accountability of the church. Those gathered at a Christian wedding are not just “guests,” they are witnesses to a vow. The “authority vested in me” of the minister is not the authority of circuit clerk’s office but the authority of the gospel and the discipline of the church.

2 The Intellectual Life and the Fruit of the Spirit - Stand to Reason Blog

I notice that this is the fruit, singular, of the Spirit. The list here are different outworkings of one nature. It's not enough to vie simply for the behaviors associated with these as though behaving well is the key. But the assumption is that we already have the spirit and the admonition is to beware the influences that are not of the Spirit that keep us from the things of the Spirit. In a way the list can be looked at the "law of Christ" mentioned only a few verses later in Galatians 6:2. Good behavior is a fulfillment of the embodiment of a law that we can keep only by living in the Spirit.

4 Have You Lost Your Love?

He understands the insidious pull in the course of learning that gradually yanks us from a warm life of love to a cold life of truncated knowledge. Somehow, he explains, we end up at this place where we “think hard about the Scriptures but we’re no longer thinking about people.”

Why Suffering? Finding Meaning and Comfort When Life Doesn’t Make Sense

Please pray that I would be faithful with what God has asked of me. Without God in my life, I know I could never be the person I was made to be; I know I would be what I once was – the cause of suffering in the lives of those I love most. But God has shown me so much grace; he’s given me so much that I don’t deserve: my wife, my family, my family at RZIM, the incredible privilege of helping share him with others when he could so easily do that without me. I want to be trustworthy with all I’ve been given, and I know I need God’s grace and the prayers of his people for that to be the case.

Letters to a new believer

GM : The one thing that I find myself coming back to time and time again is the foundation for my assurance. In fact, as a pastor, I think the one question that I heard asked to me more than any other was, “Pastor, how can I know for sure that I’m saved?” Sometimes we put it this way, “How can I know that I know that I know that I know, how can I really know for certain?”  The thing that I keep coming back to and really encourage people is the doctrine of justification. I define justification very simply: what is my sin has become his. And in turn what is his righteousness full and complete has become mine. My sins have been given to him, he’s taken them on himself, paid the price, and they’re no longer mine. And in turn, he has given me his righteousness. I keep coming back to that not only in the chapter on justification but in the chapters on sanctification and assurance. Several times I reference the Apostle Paul and his own testimony there in Romans 7. As I understand it, this is the mature Apostle Paul, not the brand new believer on the Damascus Road. And even the Apostle Paul cries out, “O, the things that I should be doing I don’t do, the things that I shouldn’t do I do.

American released from North Korea

Jeffrey Edward Fowle, one of three Americans detained in North Korea, was released and is now on his way home, a State Department official told CNN on Tuesday, October 21. Fowle was accused of leaving a Bible in a restaurant. North Korea announced Fowle's detention in June, saying he had violated the law by acting "contrary to the purpose of tourism." Fowle told CNN: "I've admitted my guilt to the government and signed a statement to that effect and requested forgiveness from the people and the government of the DPRK."

EQUIP, Christian Articles, Bible Answer Man | CRI

How old will we be in heaven? Scripture does not specifically address the issue of apparent age; however it does provide glorious insights concerning the state of our resurrected bodies. First, when God created Adam and Eve in Eden, he created them with apparent age and in the prime of life. Additionally, Jesus died and […]

Why 25% of Millennials Will Never Get Married

The one number that hasn’t really budged is the percentage of 64 year olds who have never been married. In 1960, it was 8% and in 2012, it was 7%. But the report’s authors Wendy Wang and Kim Parker say this might be changing. Each decade, the percentage of people of marriageable age who are single has grown. “When today’s young adults reach their mid-40s to mid-50s, a record high share (roughly 25%) is likely to have never been married,” they write. “This is not to say that adults in their mid-40s to mid-50s who still haven’t married will never marry, but our analysis suggests that the chance of getting married for the first time after age 54 is relatively small,” adds Parker.

When a Pastor Resigns Abruptly

"When did arrogance cease to be immoral?" When it was systematized into church function almost 2000 years ago. 1 One man's gifting wears a special title. 2. One man gets an office to pedestalize himself or be pedestalized by the rest. 3. One man gets a paycheck to fence off ministries for only himself. 4. One man dominates the main event in one-way communication. 5. All the rest of the people assuming they can consume 86% of their giving to buy these things for themselves. I realize there is too much money, ego, and spectating riding on these habit patterns for anyone to question the system as building arrogance into all involved. It's amazing how humble and servant oriented so many followers of Christ can feel as they perpetuate these systemic rules of church. How can there be a "cure of souls" in such an arrogant system? Perhaps the grace of God. But why intentionally perpetuate sin so that grace can abound? We can clean the arrogance out of the system.

C.S. Lewis Foresaw Rise of Scientism as Religion Today, Says Scholar at Apologetics Conference

CHARLOTTE — The rise of "scientism," in which science is uncritically treated as a religion, holding the power to decide ethical questions, was predicted by famous 20th century Christian author C.S. Lewis, scholar John West explained at Southern Evangelical Seminary's 2014 National Conference on Christian Apologetics.

Don't Expect Unbelievers To Act Like Believers

So it becomes a matter of right priorities both for the person calling upon the unbelievers, and for the unbelievers themselves: “Let men know [that putting sin to death] is their duty, but in its proper place; I take not men from mortification, but put them upon conversion. He that shall call a man from mending a hole in the wall of his house, to quench a fire that is consuming the whole building, is not his enemy! Poor soul! It is not your sore finger but your hectic fever that you are to apply yourself to the consideration of. You set yourself against a particular sin and do not consider that you are nothing but sin.” Don’t call upon unbelievers to stop sinning until you first call them to turn to Christ in repentance and faith. Even if they do not turn to Christ they may still suppress a sin, but do not make it your main purpose to convince unbelievers not to sin; instead, make it your purpose to call upon them to become Christians. And do not be surprised when, as unbelievers, they continue to behave like unbelievers.

Grace to You

But as clear as the Bible is to believers, unredeemed people can't understand it. To them it's foolishness because their minds are unenlightened (1 Cor. 2:14). In their spiritual blindness they choose humanistic philosophical speculations over God's Word. But as a believer, you are continually being enlightened by the truths of God's Word as the Holy Spirit enables you to understand and apply them to your life.

Burning Questions

Episode 1: Is There a God? Perhaps the biggest burning question of them all is this one: Are we alone in a meaningless, purposeless universe or is there some kind of creator – some kind of higher power out there? That’s a hotly debated question. On the one hand, our culture has recently seen a resurgent atheism whose advocates tell us that anyone who even professes belief in a deity is simply insane and irrational. Yet for all of that, belief in God seems alive and well. Over 90% of people in the world say they do believe in a higher power. The question simply will not go away: Is there a God?

Grace to You

This “already/not yet” sense of the phrase may be understood in another way. When Christ was present, He offered spiritual life to all who would heed His Word (6:37; Matt. 7:24–27). Yet the full expression of the new era He inaugurated would not come until the day of Pentecost (14:17). Both during Christ’s earthly ministry and in the fullness of the Spirit’s ministry after Pentecost, the spiritually dead who heard “the voice of the Son of God” would live.

22 2015 The Gospel Coalition National Conference April 13-15, Orlando FL

Our 2015 National Conference seeks to stir longing for our ultimate home in heaven as we explore the sweep of redemption from creation to consummation, Genesis to Revelation. Our plenary speakers will unfold the Bible's teaching on eschatology, a topic of burning importance today. Along with these nine plenary sessions we've planned more than 50 workshops and focus gatherings led by speakers addressing topics including evangelism, homosexuality, student ministry, sexual abuse, faith and work, and much more. Join us as we worship God together in word and song with joyful hope that Jesus is returning soon.

My Journey in Rhythm, Rhyme, and Redemption

Later in my journey, my wife and I actually lived in Nasvhille, Tennessee, for a few years (a couple of those years in the house of country music great Tammy Wynette, but that’s another story). Nashvegas, as locals call it, is the capital to both country music and Southern Gospel. There I learned first-hand the similarity of the two genres. And that’s when it clicked for me that some who reject Christian hip-hop because of the urban culture that gave birth to it, or with which it is still associated, have overlooked the fact that Southern Gospel finds its roots in the honky-tonk of Southern taverns.

The Church and Women at Risk

At the beginning of Jesus’s ministry, he stood up in the synagogue at Nazareth and declared that these words of Isaiah were fulfilled in him: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor” (Luke 4:17). Jesus then showed throughout his ministry that bringing freedom for captives and relief to the poor and oppressed is at the center of his divine mission. His ultimate act of liberation was his substitutionary death and victorious resurrection, which set his people free from slavery to sin and death. Yet his teachings and his example show us that proclaiming the good news of Christ’s saving work should be accompanied by tangible acts of love, service, and mercy toward our neighbors—if the gospel message is to be recognized in its full power.

My Immigration Status: Beloved

I also faced profound confusion about who I was and where I belonged. I felt I didn’t belong anywhere—too American to return to Mexico, too foreign to belong in the States. Even though I tried to stay optimistic and dodge every insult fired at undocumented immigrants, I felt the effects. Guilt, shame, and depression all knocked on my door, and I welcomed them. I carried them around, believing I was somehow responsible for the “crime” I had committed at age 5. The accusations led me to fear my situation and future.

Your Growth May Threaten Others, Grow Anyway

I love this, definitely speaks to the place God has me too. Fears keep me from taking the next step. I often struggle to view change in a positive light, even though I know it’s needed. I’m humanly forgetful, thank you for the reminder that God ordained change in everything. =) If money were no object, I would absolutely pay to spend a day with you and Betsy. I always appreciate your life giving words, inspired by your heart for community, and your views on church. I am curious if there is a way to find other storyline groups that are in our area. I am opening my home, but not much interest because maybe people don’t know about it here in Tx? Just curious if there is a way to meet other people who are like minded in this process? Thank you for moving beyond your own story and caring enough to help us find ours. Grateful.

While using a touch screen voting machine in Schaumburg, Moynihan voted for several races on the ballot, only to find that whenever he voted for a Republican candidate, the machine registered the vote for a Democrat in the same race. He notified the election judge at his polling place and demonstrated that it continued to cast a vote for the opposing candidate’s party. Moynihan was eventually allowed to vote for Republican candidates, including his own race. It is unknown if the machine in question (#008958) has been removed from service or is still in operation.

How Jesus Became God in the Flesh - Apologetics Book: Christian Analysis Defeats the Skepticism of Bart Ehrman: How Jesus Became God in the Flesh

"There is no conflict between religion and science; Only the conflict between two sciences, that of the 4th century BCE and the science of 2014." Joseph Campbell. Your thesis irresponsibly confuses evolution and human progress with God-- with a fallacious Post Hoc ergo Propter hoc rationale. Since there is vast scientific proof of the former and none of the latter, we can readily dismiss it as just more sciolistic confirmation bias. A third grade understanding of the tens of thousand of years of human progress from the paleolithic, Iron age, Bronze age to the high Neolithic more than proves the evolution of human reason from the Hunter gatherers to Planting societies, to the stargazing Zigurat builders and the early foundations of the "good society". Sadly, what you are arguing requires an astonishing campaign of ignorance, or denial of history, science, and logic -- again negating the very point of your thesis. Belief in god presupposes nescience, not reason. Ironically, by arguing for the opposite you undermine your entire premise: Reason is not born of god, but of MAN and we have the entire anthropological record of man to prove it.

What women want |

Republicans, whipsawed by the results of 2012 races that featured large gender gaps, particularly among single women, and aware that women have trended Democrat for decades, seem bewildered. A Karl Rove-commissioned study found that women voters consider the Republican Party “intolerant” and “lacking in compassion.” Consultants, gnawing nervously on polling and demographic data, implore Republican candidates to emphasize economic questions and soft-pedal the social issues. The candidates themselves, uncomfortable with the whole subject and wondering why they can’t just discuss the capital gains tax, mumble about how much they love their wives and eye the exits.

Killing Jesus Christ: New Book: The Unjust Arrest and Illegal Trials of Jesus Christ

After Christ’s arrest there were endless interrogations, Jewish trials, and Roman trials. The documentation for Christ’s trial begins with the New Testament. No thoughtful person has legitimately questioned the actuality of the trial of Jesus, or that sentences of guilt were declared by Israel and Rome. Moreover, His enemies haughtily admit that the Romans executed Christ. The accepted Gospels as well as the Talmud often refer to the trial and the crucifixion. The ambiguities are of minutiae, not material, apropos the facts of the trials. In details, the synoptic Gospels agree extraordinarily well with one another and form a consistent portrayal regarding the trial of Christ. In the vehemence of its conviction, modern Orthodox Judaism agrees with the rabbinical application of justice that was applied to Christ by the hands of the Romans. Orthodox Judaism’s revulsion of Jesus Christ is so severe that by Mishnahic strictures, some contemporary Jewish fundamentalists would send Christ to Pilate a second time, should they be given the opportunity.

ISIS Video: America’s Air Dropped Weapons Now in Our Hands

“I’ve watched the video several times and it appears bogus to me,” e-mailed Dakota Wood, a former U.S. Central Command logistics planner, now with the Heritage Foundation. “The RPG [[rocket propelled grenade] rounds seem packaged properly, but the final box opened has Spanish markings. The canister opened at the end of the video is not representative of a current U.S. grenade (all our frag grenades are baseball shaped). The photo of M-16s is highly questionable, as the packaging shown is what one would see at a civilian gun show, instead of the packaging I'm familiar with from shipments to armories. Plus, those boxes also don't fit with the air drop bundle shown.”

She tried to work on the report, but had ‘writer’s block’ for three days. Finally, she took a break to listen to a sermon that cited Jeremiah’s message to Baruch, a servant of the king: “Do you seek great things for yourself? Seek them not” (Jer. 45:4). Immediately, her heart was pierced. “The Lord was saying to me, ‘Stop this. This is all about you. This is my hand against you. Repent. You are seeking your own glory. Seek it not.’”

Josh McDowell and Son: Christian Parents Can Help Children Develop Their Own Convictions on Faith by Not Answering Questions

CHARLOTTE – For Christian parents to pass on their faith to their children, they should not answer their children's questions but respond with more questions to help their kids think through the issues themselves rather than rely upon their parents, famed Christian apologist Josh McDowell and his son, Sean McDowell, explained recently at the Southern Evangelical Seminary's 21st Annual National Conference on Christian Apologetics in Charlotte, North Carolina.

SN: I can name three. The first would be to not read it. Why cut yourself off from the riches of the past? The second concerns reading history with judgmental and dismissive attitudes. We can easily do this because we tend to think so highly of our own age, and we tend to be unaware of our own blind spots. The counter is to read church history with humility, not hubris. Third, we need to avoid “hagiography.” Our church history figures don’t need halos. The Scripture writers show the faults and flaws of the biblical figures. There is only one who ranks as the true hero: Christ. We can be so thankful for leaders from church history who so clearly and persuasively point us to Christ. But we must ultimately look to the One to whom they are pointing and not to them.

7 Educational Scriptures On Loving and Forgiving Our Enemies

It's important for us to read and understand God's word because in the Bible it tells us that we can't grasp it on our own. One area that is difficult for us to grasp is about loving and forgiving our enemies.

Let there be light: Evolution of complex bioluminescent traits may be predictable

A longstanding question among scientists is whether evolution is predictable. A team of researchers from University of California Santa Barbara may have found a preliminary answer. The genetic underpinnings of complex traits in cephalopods may in fact be predictable because they evolved in the same way in two distinct species of squid.

Keller on Quiet Times, Mysticism, and Priceless Payoff of Prayer

You just have to be faithful and regular in prayer. Most of us pursue joy in prayer, don’t get it, and then don’t stick at it. But as the Puritans used to say, “Mind your work, not your wages.” Prayer is a duty—even if we don’t get much out of it emotionally, we nevertheless owe it to God. Christians necessarily believe we depend on God for everything—a prayerless Christian, then, is a contradiction in terms. But if there is a secret to this, it may be right here. When we seek God for himself, not for some emotional payoff, and we develop habits of regular prayer, the sense of joy and of his presence is more likely to come and come more often.
