Watch Oprah and Colbert Discuss Their Favorite Bible Verses

TV host and network executive Oprah Winfrey recently visited The Late Show to talk about her network’s upcoming series about world religions called Belief. While chatting with host Stephen Colbert (who is a devout Catholic), Oprah discussed her passion for the Christian Scriptures and how she was labeled a "preacher girl" as a child. While Colbert said that his favorite verse is Matthew 6:27, Oprah explained why Psalms 37:4 means the most to her, relating it to philosophies like karma and "the third law of motion.”

This Pooping Dessert Is Exactly What No One Wants After Their Meal

What? You haven’t tried a cartoon-character themed dessert that poops chocolate as you eat it? This just in: your life has been pretty empty until now. This sweet treat can be found at a Sanrio-themed cafe in Hong Kong (where else?). The character in question is Gudetama, a Sanrio creation who is a lazy egg. (Naturally.) It (he?) also barfs sweet custard, just in case the pooping thing didn’t trigger all your body function phobias. If you're not already overly grossed out, check out the video below.

Woodlands Church - The Woodlands, Texas

Alumni and Friends

“During my time at Southern, above all, I was equipped with the knowledge of how to interpret the Bible and the wisdom for how to apply it in a church setting. But getting the opportunity to serve on staff in a local church as I was getting seminary education was, perhaps, my most important experience. Nearly every professor I had in seminary was pastoring or had been a pastor at some point. Their instruction and care for future pastors like myself made a lasting impression on me.”

Bride’s Family Throws Feast for the Homeless Community After Groom Cancels Wedding

Here’s a heartbreaking story that still has somewhat of a happy ending. A couple in Sacramento spent 10s of thousands of dollars preparing for their wedding this weekend, booking a 4-star hotel to host a giant reception feast. But when the groom got cold feet just days before and called off the union, the bride’s family decided to go ahead with the party. They invited families from local homeless shelters to come and enjoy the banquet-style meal instead. One of the more than 90 people who came out for the free feast told local station KCRA, “When you’re going through a hard time and a struggle, for you to get out and do something different and with your family … It’s really a blessing."

This Crazy Geyser Looks Like Something Out of a Sci-Fi Movie

Here’s a look at a massive, strange geyser in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert, that doesn’t even look like something that could exist on earth. The Fly Geyser is a constantly evolving formation, that frequently changes colors and shapes. As the clip explains, it was accidentally created when a power company caused an underground sulfuric water leak, eventually leading to the formation of the limestone structure. Because of all of the algae on its surface, it constantly changes colors. Take and moment, and have your mind blown.

What’s the Difference Between the Resurrection of Lazarus and the Resurrection of Jesus?

When it comes to the Christian faith, one of the most important doctrines is the resurrection of the dead/the resurrection of Jesus. Biblical faith is not simply centered in ethical and religious teachings. Instead, it is founded on the person and work of Jesus. From a soteriological perspective, if Jesus was not raised from the dead, we as His followers are still dead in our sins (1Cor.15:7). Jesus said in John 11:25, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me shall live even of he dies.” Jesus could not have made full atonement for our sins without the resurrection. Also, through the resurrection, Jesus took on the role as advocate and intercessor (1 John. 2:2; Rom. 8:34). His resurrection also guaranteed us the opportunity of having a resurrected body’s like His (1 Cor.15:20-23, 51-53; 1 Pet.1:3; Phil. 3:20-21; John. 5:25-29).

“It amazes me, and it actually kind of scares me. [Joseph] Stalin killed tens of millions of people. Mao [Zedong] killed tens of millions of people. Pol Pot killed millions of people.” “When you have a command economy, when everything is dictated from one authority, that’s socialism,” Paul continued. “But it doesn’t come easily to those who resist it.”

A Christian Perspective on Homosexuality | Reasonable Faith

Now in other cases, enforceable laws governing homosexuality might be proposed, and Christians will have to think hard about these on an individual basis. For example, a Christian might not see any good reason why equal opportunity in buying or renting housing should not be guaranteed to persons who are homosexuals. But I could well imagine that a Christian might oppose a bill guaranteeing equal employment opportunities for homosexuals. For some jobs might be inappropriate for such persons. For example, would you want a practicing lesbian to be your daughter’s physical education teacher at school? Would you want your son’s coach to be a homosexual, who would be in the locker room with the boys? I, for one, wouldn’t support a law which could force public schools to hire such individuals.

Outside of sports and the weather, Dad and I didn't really talk that much -- he just wasn't that kind of guy. He was no nonsense and strict. If Dad as much as looked at me a certain way, I knew I was acting out of line. When I came home with a C grade in physical education (I hated dressing for PE), I got grounded for a month. He had very high expectations and would never accept excuses. If I ever said that I thought something was hard, he would tell me to "try harder." And if I felt like I wasn't being treated fairly in school or had an issue with someone, he would tell me to deal with it on my own. "Figure it out," he would always say.

Lecrae Confesses Abortion, Invites Others into the Light

Inexhaustible roots spread out underneath abortion, and the fallout of unwanted pregnancy is daunting, reminding the church of her high calling. Abortion reflects a failure of men, Ensor says, who find abortion as a way to be sexual predators with an easy way to clean up the mess and walk away. Instead, the culture needs a model of true, self-sacrificing masculinity, Lecrae stresses. “I think it is a bigger issue of men and standing up and saying: I am going to be a dad, and I am going to take leadership, and I am going to be a force in my community to break a lot of these cycles.” The church has an opportunity to step up and model this masculine responsibility, and to step in and care for mothers and children, and particularly in vulnerable urban environments.

Are There Degrees of Sin?

When I sin, I choose my will over the will of God Almighty. By implication I’m essentially saying that I’m more intelligent, wise, righteous, and powerful than God Himself. Calvin said that all sin is mortal in the sense that God could justifiably destroy each of us for the smallest sin we’ve committed. In fact, the penalty for sin was given the first day of human creation: “But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (Gen. 2:17). Yet God doesn’t deal with us always according to justice. He deals with us according to grace, He allows us to live, and He moves to bring about our redemption. Calvin said that all sins are mortal in that we deserve death from them but that no sin is mortal in the sense that it can destroy our saving grace. We have to repent, yes, but the justifying grace that the Holy Spirit brings to us is not killed by our sin. Calvin and every one of the Reformers strenuously maintained that there is a difference between lesser sins and what they called gross and heinous sins.

4 Questions That Will Deepen Your Understanding of God

Questions alone do not have the power to deepen our relationship with God. However, they are often the way in which God invites us to discover some things about Him or ourselves that he will then use to move us into a deeper relationship with him. A prayerfully curious and humble faith that is willing to live into the answers one day at a time will over time become a deep faith that sustains us even in the most trying of times.

6 Devotionals You Should Read Next

How do I forgive someone who doesn't think she did anything wrong? Or who doesn't care? Why would I forgive someone who doesn't even think she needs to be forgiven? Because I want my neck and my back muscles to stop hurting. Because I want to sleep, instead of having endless  imaginary conversations. Because I want my mind back. Because I want my life back. So I let her off the hook. I let her off once, to start, and felt pretty good about myself, until someone brought up her name at lunch, and then I got mad all over again, which threw me for a loop. I forgave her. Why am I still so mad at her? I felt like I bought expensive wrinkle cream and woke up more wrinkly than ever. I wanted my money back. Forgiveness is both a decision and a process. It's hard enough to choose to forgive in the first place, and then we have to do it again. And again. And again. And again.

Fool’s Talk: Recovering the Art of Christian Persuasion

From this brief excerpt you can probably tell Guinness isn’t the type to advocate for a postmodern apologetic in which Christianity is merely a more attractive metanarrative. He’s an ardent defender of what Francis Schaeffer called “true truth.” Persuasion, he holds, must therefore be rooted in countering the false worldviews held by unbelievers, since that is the heart of unbelief. “In the biblical view,” Guinness notes, “the central core of the anatomy of unbelief stems from its willful abuse of truth.”

Our hearts, minds and hands will be set on that which is above.

5 Keys to Surviving a Breakup

Getting over things is easy, or keeping busy also, but feeling, identifying the emotion and dealing with why you feel that way is difficult and requires maturity and maturity as a Christian. God did say we should make peace with each other, be kind, merciful, compassionate, slow to anger and most of all loving. Revelation Chapter 3 says the church will reject things that would otherwise make them Godly. Your heart and mind needs to be renewed by God, therefore the mature approach is to ask for forgiveness where you've hurt someone. Figure out why you acted like you did. Don't run away from healing and healing your ex, be an example for the world. However if your ex was abusive it's often best to stay away from such people.

How ‘Playboy’ Magazine Legitimized Pornography—and Destroyed Itself in the Process

Here’s a simplified explanation: Sexually explicit material triggers mirror neurons in the male brain. These neurons, which are involved with the process for how to mimic a behavior, contain a motor system that correlates to the planning out of a behavior.  In the case of pornography, this mirror neuron system triggers the arousal, which leads to sexual tension and a need for an outlet. “The unfortunate reality is that when he acts out (often by masturbating), this leads to hormonal and neurological consequences, which are designed to bind him to the object he is focusing on,” wrote Struthers. “In God's plan, this would be his wife, but for many men it is an image on a screen. Pornography thus enslaves the viewer to an image, hijacking the biological response intended to bond a man to his wife and therefore inevitably loosening that bond.” (For more on this see,  9 Things You Should Know About Pornography and the Brain .)

9 Things You Should Know About Global Persecution of Christians (2015 Edition)

5. North Korea : Although the UN estimates there are between 200,000 and 400,000 Christians in North Korea, no Protestant or Catholic churches officially exist in the country except in the capital Pyongyang. In Pyongyang there were four state-controlled Christian churches: two Protestant churches, a Catholic church, and Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Church. The number of congregants regularly worshiping at these churches is unknown, and numerous defectors from outside of Pyongyang reported no knowledge of these churches. The report notes that the North Korean government continued to deal harshly with those who engaged in almost any religious practices through executions, torture, beatings, and arrests.

Hyatt Hotels Will No Longer Offer Pay-Per-View Porn

Following similar recent moves from both Marriott and Hilton, Hyatt has announced that their hotels will no longer offer on-demand, pay-per-view porn for guests. The group the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which has been pressuring those in the hospitality industry to ditch adult content in recent years, released a statement saying it "is grateful to Hyatt for its policy change and commitment to oppose sexual exploitation.” The hotel chain didn’t say why it was making the change, though, as a the Los Angeles Times notes , the Internet and digital devices have changed the way many people consume any type of video content. They cited a study by PKF Hospitality Research that found “annual hotel revenue in the United States from in-room movie rentals—including adult films— dropped from $339 per room in 2000 to $107 in 2014."

From the Bahá’í Faith to Porn to Alpha to Jesus

Aaron was a friend who identified as a “hostile agnostic.” I quickly learned that spending time with him was way more fun than prayer and chastity. I tried to manage my dual commitment to God and to someone who found the Bahá’í faith strange. But the more serious our relationship became, the greater the gap grew between what I should have been doing (praying, reading scripture, fasting) and what I was in fact doing (showing up to class late wearing Aaron’s shirts). So I became indifferent to spiritual matters, abandoning the pursuit of “holiness” to do whatever seemed right.

RS: We talked about how there has been a decline in the quality of music. Take the song that is at the top of the charts this week, lock yourself in a room for five hours, and listen to it over and over again. At the end of five hours, you’ll throw the music against the wall. Now, go in there with Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” and listen to it for five hours. At the end you’ll be picking up nuances that you missed for the first four hours. It never gets old or stale. There’s a reason why hymns like “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name,” “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Rock of Ages,” and “Holy, Holy, Holy” have survived for so long. Out of the thousands of hymns that have been written, they’ve endured. Why? It’s because of their content and beauty. Our dream is that one or two of the hymns from this project might still be around a hundred years from now.

Stealing From God (paperback)

FANTASTIC! This book takes the tiger by the tail and calls those that rant against Christianity to the carpet, with THE EVIDENCE, THE TRUTH, and breaks down EXACTLY what they "stand" for and against, and what is shown in this book, they have NOTHING to stand on. EVERY CHRISTIAN should know the facts and tactics, atheists use against Christianity, and with that knowledge, the atheist sand castle can't possibly stand. Thank you, Frank for all the effort and research to put this book together. It compels me to know Hiis Word and their tactics, and now I feel MUCH more equipped, and confident when I encounter and engage, an atheist, not to rant back at them, but to present real truth, to help them think and prayerfully find who it is they rage against, and truly find Jesus.

8 Ways to Stay Hungry for Missions after a Short-Term Trip

Prayerfully discern if God is calling you to a longer-term commitment to the mission field. Many full-time missionaries initially developed a desire for missions on a short-term mission trip. You may have just met your first missionaries this summer. You now know that missionaries are not super-Christians; they are simply those willing to accept the call. Does God want you to cross a culture to spread his fame in that place? Ask him to make the answer clear.

A spiritual analysis of and remedy for lust of the eyes.

What seems most characteristic of the compulsive consumption of pornography is that the consumer no longer finds any pleasure in looking at the simulacra. All he has left, when the act is completed, is a craving for stimulating a desire that will always remain unsatisfied. What is to be learned from the testimonies of pornography’s users is the important fact that, contrary to prevailing cultural assumptions, the lust of the eyes is not a “hot” but rather a “cold” vice. It arises from the roaming unrest of the spirit rooted in a spiritual apathy that, again, despairs of and eventually comes to resent the very transcendence in which the dignity of the human person has its roots. The lust of the eyes that feeds on Internet pornography does not inflame but rather freezes the soul and the heart in a cold indifference to the human dignity of others and of oneself.

Renewing Your Mind | A Tabernacle in the Wilderness | October 20, 2015

The tabernacle of the Old Testament, Rev. Hyde observes, is like a "crayon drawing" our children make for us. The people and the house in the picture point us to realities without being an exact representation of them. Yet, the tabernacle is a drawing that the Father gives his "son," Israel, rather than the other way around. This lesson considers how God provided the tabernacle to teach about true and heavenly things concerning Him and how He relates to His people. We will look at what the tabernacle teaches in terms of God's holiness, helpfulness, and heavenliness.

God Doesn’t Care How Big Your Platform Is

God’s type of greatness doesn’t appear powerful in the world’s eyes, and it’s certainly not sexy. But it’s the kind of greatness that Jesus lived out when He walked the earth—the truest kind of greatness there is. So instead of looking to our phones and our screens for what greatness we might be able to create for ourselves, let’s seek true greatness in our own lives: serving and loving those around us, right where we are.

Notecard Answers for Why I Believe the Bible

There is a single, coherent theme throughout the book that the glory of God is paramount. If God were to write a book this is how he would write it. If man were to write a book this is not how he would write it. It has the “ring of truth” as Lewis would say. Man would tend to diminish his defects and exaggerate his virtues; the Bible seems to do the opposite. It maintains the dignity of humanity but also shows its brokenness. It is here that we see the glory of God on display. This brings me to another aspect of this argument. If you survey all world religions most will agree that there is a problem and they exist to help us with this problem. However, it is only biblical Christianity that actually maintains a God who does not compromise. Every other plan of salvation has God bending his righteousness in order to show love. Man and God partner together to achieve salvation. However, with the Bible God does not compromise. He maintains and demonstrates his righteousness while  showing forth his love! On the cross God is both the just and the justifier (Rom. 3:26). This means that he does not compromise.

Becoming a First-Time Mom at Age 41

But for all the warnings and fears over how much a new baby could drain a first-time mom, my experience turned out to be very different. WORLD | Fallen and forsaken | Mindy Belz | Oct. 31, 2015

At that time, church leaders reported American aircraft flew over the area but took no action. The surviving Khabur River families have not received support from international aid groups or the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), but were taken in by other churches in Syria and helped by the Iraq-based Assyrian aid group CAPNI and others. In April ISIS blew up a church in one of the villages, the 80-year-old Church of the Virgin Mary in Tal Nasri. In May Kurdish forces working with Christian militias managed to retake Tal Nasri and several other villages, but ISIS had land-mined the towns, especially the spaces surrounding churches. The Christian residents have not been allowed to return to the 35 villages dotting the area, which were settled by those escaping the genocide of Christians in Turkey and Iraq a century ago.

Illiberal Liberalism? The Fate of Religious Freedom in the Public Square

In recent years, several issues have polarized the American people, including same-sex marriage and Obamacare's HHS contraception services mandate. Discussions on these topics are naturally heated, but some fear they have taken an illiberal turn and argue that religiously-based viewpoints are being met with increasing intolerance. This event will explore the potential impact of this phenomenon on religious freedom and the role of free expression in a liberal society. Is the desire to shut down debate on controversial issues leading some Americans to abandon the liberal value of the free exercise of religion for everyone?
