If you are reading this article, that means you have access to either a computer, a laptop or a smart phone. You have electricity. You have a connection to the Internet. If you know where your next meal is coming from and you don’t have to worry about getting clean water, having shelter over your head and accessing medical care, you benefit from more wealth than many people throughout human history.

How a Marriage Can Survive the Worst

Had we not already been in therapy together by this point, I'm not sure how Brea would have reacted. In our sessions, we were able to talk through our difficulties, our pain and our disagreements. Thankfully, we were given tools and insights we could use to help us navigate the strains put on our relationship. We certainly don't have it all figured out, and we struggle just like everyone else. But here are a few things we’ve learned about maintaining our marriage through this terrible time:

What's A Skoliosexual?

"A lot of people feel broken before they find a label and a community to go with it," Michael, a team member affiliated with the Asexual Visibility & Education Network (AVEN), which works to inform people about sexuality and identities which may fall under the asexuality umbrella. "Many asexual people feel they can't live up to the expectations of their friends, family and society, and are hugely relieved at finding out they're not alone," he added. "We hold that no-one can tell anyone else whom they are sexually attracted too, if any. Telling an asexual person they are not asexual is like telling a straight person they are gay or bi, or vice versa. Ultimately only the person in question is in a good position to know either way."

3 Things Christians Get Wrong About Women Leaders

In regards to your earlier question, when Paul says "I do not permit a woman to speak" - the verb is present tense. Paul is saying "I am not currently permitting." It is never used to say "I will never allow" or "it is never permitted." Phillip Payne, Ben Witherington, and others have made this point. Paul is most likely not permitting women to speak in order to correct a behavior (pagan priestesses or women who did not know the scriptures trying to teach.) The fact that Paul gives instructions elsewhere to women on speaking in church should make it clear that it was not a permanent ban. That's why they say that Paul's prohibitive texts are contextual, not continual.

Playboy’s Move Away From Nudity Is Actually a Bad Sign

I think Christians generally have a really constricting view of sexuality. Pornography will not incapacitate you, it will not by it's nature make you a misogynistic. And masturbation has existed for thousands of years. Sexual urges are very natural, and can be involuntary. Sex and lust are not things we should be ashamed of. So erotic visual content is ubiquitous? So is violent imagery and profanity. These are all natural things, and only cause problems for society when they put people in conflict or keep people from engaging with each other collaboratively.

Love and Repect: Basics for Marriage

Second, the command reveals something about the needs of the recipient. In other words, if the Bible said that shepherds should feed the sheep, a reasonable inference would be that sheep need food. When husbands are told to love their wives, we can infer from this that wives need to be loved. When wives are told to respect their husbands, we can infer from this that husbands need to be respected. Think of it as two kinds of car that run on different kinds of fuel — diesel and regular, say. Men run on respect, and wives run on love.

Refuting 5 False Theories About Jesus

The “failed prophet” theory is generally traced to the German scholar Albert Schweitzer (1875–1965). Though Schweitzer was right to draw attention to the eschatological (end-time) character of Jesus’s message, he tended to cherry-pick the evidence, highlighting some prophetic statements while ignoring others—such as Jesus’s claims that God’s kingdom was a present reality (Luke 11:20; 17:20–21) or his own confession of ignorance regarding the timing of his return (Matt. 24:36). Critics following Schweitzer also mistakenly suppose that first-century Jewish apocalyptic language (e.g., the sun being darkened, stars falling from heaven, etc.) must have been intended literally. A comparison with Peter’s sermon at Pentecost (Acts 2:17–21), however, shows this isn’t always the case. Jesus was certainly expecting something climactic to happen within his disciples’ lifetime, but it wasn’t necessarily the end of the physical universe. God’s kingdom, as Jesus saw it, defied expectations.

Jesus’ Joy in Marriage

The reason there is so much misery in marriage is not that husbands and wives seek their own pleasure, but that they do not seek it in the pleasure of their spouses. The biblical mandate to husbands and wives is to seek your own joy in the joy of your spouse.

I Hate Porn

Porn is like a narcotic , it hijacks the brain , it redefines human sexuality, and in the meantime ruins lives, destroys families, and destabilizes ministries. And honestly it’s a problem that makes me tired — tired of the devastation Satan is causing to children, women, families, pastors, churches, and the world with this tragic evil.

Don't Laugh, but I Think Theology Should Be Funny

I do think, in spite of considerable evidence to the contrary, that theology can and should be, in some of its modes, funny. Theology done right should make you laugh. It should be done in an entertaining manner. Humor is not the only mode of entertainment the discourse of theology can take, but it is surely the case that we are often attracted to speech and writing that is funny. This calls into question the presumption by some that if you want what you have to say to be entertaining, then what you have to say cannot be serious. I have tried to defy that presumption by attempting to do theology in a manner that “tickles” the imagination.

Bad News, Indeed — Playboy Opened the Floodgates and Now the Culture is Drowning

Centurion Contradiction?

In Luke 7:4–6 Jesus listened to and then went with the elders of the Jews, toward the centurion’s house, after hearing their request and their reasons for it without any reluctance; He at once complied, did not hesitate, or raise any objection about it, but went with them freely. Matthew completely omits this detail and discourse and instead focuses on the centurion’s thoughts and motives, not what his friends and benefactors thought of the centurion. Remember that Luke was writing to a Gentile audience. Luke wanted Theophilus to be aware that most Jewish people respected a God-fearing Roman soldier. Matthew writing to a Jewish audience wanted them to know that a Roman centurion was sincerely respectful of Jesus. So when viewed with these different perspectives and audiences in mind, it becomes clear that we should expect different emphases from the writers, but the account itself is non-contradictory.

Bird’s-Eye View

One reason for the high visual acuity in birds is that they have very large eyes. Our human eyes make up no more than two percent of the weight of our head, while the eyes of birds can be up to 15 percent of their head weight. Another feature of the bird’s eye is that it has a relatively flat lens mounted at a greater distance from the retina, giving a long focal length that brings objects closer, like a telescope.

Study Claims It’s too Late to Save Some Cities from Sea Level Rise

The peer review journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has released the findings of alarming new research, which claims that it may already be too late to prevent several major cities—including New Orleans and Miami—from succumbing to rising sea levels caused by climate change. However, the researchers say that if significant cuts are made to global carbon emissions in the coming decades, dozens of other cities could be saved. The researchers cautioned that they did not have a definitive timeline as to when the potentially devastating levels of sea level rise would occur. One of the study’s authors told AFP News, “Some of this could happen as early as next century. But it might also take many centuries … "We were really trying to show what the consequences of our carbon choices are going to be.”

http://rickwarren.org/devotional/english/persuade-with-gentleness

If I want to persuade people in my church to live more for Jesus Christ, I must do it in a gentle way. I could stand on stage every weekend and say, “Let me tell you all the things that you’re doing wrong,” but that way of talking just builds emotional barriers. People would probably stop coming to church! It doesn’t work in the pulpit, it doesn’t work in the home, and it doesn’t work with your boss. Nagging never works.
