Amazon Gets Crafty with New Marketplace

Gather ye crafters, quilters, knitters and artisans and other artsy types (Decoupage? Whittlers?). Etsy's homemade stuff-selling dominance may be over. Amazon has announced it’s starting a new marketplace. Called Handmade at Amazon, the just launched seller (as reported by New York Times) already features 80,000 items from about 5,000 sellers in 60 countries. To participate, sellers must prove that their goods are handmade, unlike Etsy, who recently expanded to allow outsourcing. Currently, Amazon features six categories: “home, jewelry, artwork, stationery and party supplies, kitchen and dining, and baby” with more expected to be rolled out later.

Weighing Worldviews: Naturalism

In the beginning was nothing. Or a multiverse. Or something we haven’t discovered yet. All that is certain is that it wasn’t God or gods or any kind of supernatural force since in naturalism, the natural is all there is (hence, natural ism). And then something happened which brought everything into existence – space, time, matter, and energy. Eventually stars and planets formed and then life inexplicably arose on Earth (and possibly elsewhere in the universe). Life continued forming and evolving until we have every kind of living creature in existence today. Where is all of this heading? No one knows. Maybe the universe will keep expanding until it runs out of energy and becomes cold and lifeless. Or it will all crunch back into a singularity. Only time will tell.

The Real Source of Self-Confidence

It’s really all about knowing your God-appointed sphere, or your God-appointed zone, and being comfortable to be that. I love Ephesians 1, where Paul starts, “Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God to the Saints who are in Ephesus.” So I think about that: “Paul,” this is who I am; “an apostle,” this is what I do; “of Jesus Christ,” this is who I do it for; “by the will of God,” this is my authority; “to the saints of Ephesus,” this is my sphere, my audience. Paul knew who he was, what he was about, who he was doing it for. What a great way to live our lives.

The Great Divorce

Churches are really dropping the ball. My father violently abused my mother through my entire childhood. She was so ashamed about the failure of her marriage that she didn't tell anyone. Without her saying anything I learned to keep the fact that my parents were separated as the most horrible secret which had to be kept at all costs. My mom, my brother, and I needed help, but our fear that our evangelical church would blame us for my father's behavior kept us silent. I will never get married because I can not trust any man not to hurt me. My brother suffers from constant, crippling anxiety that he will turn out to be like our dad to his own family, and my mother is the worst of us walking wounded. She worked two jobs with no child support for most of my adolescence, which means from 6th grade on I raised myself with no other role models. I'm asked constantly why I've never married. I wish I could explain to them the pain which scars my soul to this day.

Andrew Peterson at the Burning Edge of Dawn

Marriage, I’m sure, teaches different people different things, but for me it’s been 20 years of God whittling away my assumption that he’ll just get sick of me one day and change his mind. . . . Then the best news in all the world (the gospel!) is that God has decreed a way of salvation that also upholds the worth of his glory, the honor of his Son, and the eternal salvation of his elect. He has given his Son to die for sinners and to conquer their death by his own resurrection.

One of the beautiful byproducts of the gospel is that it gathers believers from many backgrounds into one body. Still, we don’t share all the same experiences. Those in the American cultural majority simply don’t face everything minority brothers and sisters do, and vice versa.

3 Ways 'Mystery Guests' Can Improve Your Church

You are about to see your church through a lens that you’ve never seen it through before: The guest lens. Prepare yourself. You’re going to see what it’s like to visit your own website and try and find worship times or information on children’s ministries. You’ll learn what it’s like to find a place to park, and walk through doors (assuming you can find the right door), and face a crowd of people you’ve never met before. You’ll know if people are friendly, what it’s like to maneuver your way to the restroom using only signs, or how comfortable parents feel checking their kids into your Sunday school or kid’s ministry. You’ll see how easy it is to follow along with the elements of the service, and you’ll know when someone fills out the information card if they were actually contacted.

Still in the World: A Pro-Life View of Dying

Although my mother had experienced suffering and pain many other times in her life, I had never before been tempted to end her life. What had changed that had made me consider, however fleetingly and out of a sickeningly misplaced sense of compassion, usurping the role of God? A wave of revulsion washed over me as I realized I had been tempted because I had forgotten a simple truth: The dying are still the living, and their inherent worth is not diminished simply because their remaining moments on earth are few.

18
Demons on a Leash

So God limits the demonic attacks in our world today. Satan is on a leash, and we are under God’s protection (Psalm121:5–8). That does not mean we will never face difficulties or trials, for those are part of this fallen world (and sometimes result from the direct attacks of spiritual beings, Ephesians 6:12; 2 Corinthians 12:7–10). But it does mean we can trust God with whatever comes at us in the battle. We belong inseparably to the Lord (Romans 8:31–39). He guards us and keeps us as we trust in Him (1 Peter 5:6–7). We are to submit to God and resist the devil; then he will flee from us (James 4:7).

What Denomination Should I Join? - Christian Research Institute

For example, some denominations are very preoccupied with their histories and the controversies that led to their formation. That’s usually a negative indication, for the time spent celebrating these histories is usually better spent doing other things. Some denominations are historically Swedish, or English, or Scottish, or Dutch, or African-American, or some other background. That is fine, as long as the church welcomes people from other ethnicities; but often they do not. Sometimes denominations insist on particular emphases of doctrine or practice, which limit the flexibility of a congregation to minister in its present situation. Some denominations are more authoritarian than others in the degree to which they govern each congregation’s use of property, curriculum, missions support, colleges, and seminaries. In some cases that may be a good thing, but prospective members must choose how much authority they think the church should grant to a denomination.

SeaWorld Will No Longer Be Allowed to Breed Orcas in Captivity at California Park

Officials in California inserted a last-minute amendment to a new measure that will allow SeaWorld to expand the tanks it uses to house it’s orcas, but now also bans them from breeding whales in captivity. The park, which has come under criticism for its treatment of killer whales, released a statement saying, “Breeding is a natural, fundamental and important part of an animal’s life and depriving a social animal of the right to reproduce is inhumane.” A lawyer for PETA, however, told The Guardian , “These 11 orcas [that are currently at the park] would be the last 11 orcas there.” The measure from the California Coastal Commission also makes it illegal to transfer or sell captive orcas or to keep whales captured at sea.

It's probably the new scent of romance. Stay tuned, the it will be officially debuted at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater during the Andy Kaufman Awards on Oct 11.

The suit was filed on behalf of a student who is involved in the music department, which helps put on the production, but says he is now faced with “direct and unwelcome contact with the objectionable portion of the Christmas Spectacular.” Nothing helps ring in the Christmas season in modern America like a high-profile, federal lawsuit.

The Ten Commandments Monument Has Been Removed from Oklahoma Capitol

A massive, granite monument of the Ten Commandments has been removed from the grounds of the Oklahoma State Capitol. The removal of the large structure took place overnight on Monday so that it wouldn’t attract protestors. Consciousness Undermines Evolution | Come Reason's Apologetics Notes

What kind of explanation of the development of these organisms, even one that includes evolutionary theory, could account for the appearance of organisms that are not only physically adapted to the environment but also conscious subjects? In brief, I believe it cannot be a purely physical explanation. What has to be explained is not just the lacing of organic life with a tincture of qualia but the coming into existence of subjective individual points of view—a type of existence logically distinct from anything describable by the physical sciences alone. If evolutionary theory is a purely physical theory, then it might in principle provide the framework for a physical explanation of the appearance of behaviorally complex animal organisms with central nervous systems. But subjective consciousness, if it is not reducible to something physical, would not be part of this story; it would be left completely unexplained by physical evolution—even if the physical evolution of such organisms is in fact a causally necessary and sufficient condition for consciousness.

Obama Apologizes for Bombing Doctors Without Borders Hospital

Following the bombing, Doctors Without Borders said the bombing of their facility possibly constitutes a war crime , and are demanding an investigation. They said in a statement, “Under the clear presumption that a war crime has been committed, [Doctors Without Borders] demands that a full and transparent investigation into the event be conducted by an independent international body.” The White House spokesman said “there is no evidence that ... I've seen or that anybody else has presented that indicate that this was anything other than a terrible, tragic accident."

33
The Short Road to Irrelevance

In the past, the most highly recognized and progressive scientists in the field were also highly trained theologians (including Pascal, Newton, and Galileo). They helped maintain the connection between the Bible and science, between the laboratory and the sanctuary. We still have progressive scientists who are strong believers, but when someone comes to church today, they expect to hear about theology (the study of God). Do they expect to hear about biology, geology, and anthropology? The answer is no, of course. This is a major problem. Certainly the Church would not see itself as a research institution teaching people how to use microscopes or develop new electronics and so on. But this is where people have been confused. Observational science, which builds our technology, is very different to historical or origins science, which is concerned with the origin of what we observe in the present. It was the historical or origins science that the Church gave up to the world—and thus disconnected the Bible from the real world.

God’s Great Mercy and Our New Birth

One of the reasons we don't exult in this like Peter is that we don't understand it, or we don't believe it. "God caused us to be born again." God fathered us into second being as children of God. We had no existence as his children. "That which is born of the flesh is [just] flesh," Jesus said in John 3:6. But "that which is born [again] of the Spirit is spirit." We had no living spiritual existence. We were what a human father and mother and common grace could make of us. But then God came on us and caused us to be born again. He awakened a new life. The life of faith and hope in God. The life of the Spirit in us.

Dear Timothy: Find your contentment in Christ alone

Timothy, my dear son in Christ, you will tempted to fall into a malaise of despair when church attendance dips precipitously, when your people do not give enough money to meet the monthly budget, when they doze through the doctrinal parts of your sermons, when they show a propensity for milk instead of meat, when you hear rumblings from a few that perhaps the church could really use a new leader. Your contentment must be in Christ, for he will never treat you in such a fickle manner. Even if they do unjustly remove you from office, you must not waver, neither in your life, nor in your teaching, for your contentment is in Christ. He will not fire you. He will shepherd your heart through these trying times to make you more like him. People are a fickle lot. Jesus is not. People are unfaithful. Jesus is faithful. That is why your contentment, your satisfaction must ultimately be in Him.

Why "Many Ways to God" Makes No Sense | Come Reason's Apologetics Notes

Oprah had a captive audience as she spoke on faith and belief . Referencing the book Ishmael by Daniel Quinn she states "One of the mistakes that human beings make is that there is only one way to live, and that we don't accept that there are diverse ways of being in the world. There are millions of ways of being a human being and many paths to what you call God…" I'm certain that many in the studio audience as well as at home agreed with her. The idea that the Christian faith could be the exclusive path to God usually spurs discomfort on the part of people who hear it explained that way. They don't like the idea of only one way and their immediate reaction is to think the Christian who holds to exclusivity is being biased in his or her own favor. But is this so? Let's take a look at a few reasons why people believe in Oprah's understanding of multiple paths to God and see if they make sense. Exclusivity is Bigoted In the Oprah quote above, you can immediately see how the television host reacts to the audience member who stated there is only one way to God.

Debate: Is the Bible a Book of Peace? David Wood (Christian) vs. Shabir Ally (Muslim)

http://www.answeringmuslims.com Is the Bible a book of peace? Christians point to Jesus' commands to "Love your neighbor as yourself" and "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you" to prove that Christianity is a religion of peace. However, the Bible also contains reports of Joshua invading the land of Canaan, Saul fighting the Amalekites, etc. So what's the Biblical position on peace and violence? In this debate, David Wood and Shabir Ally go through the text to get to the truth.

How Do You Decide Which Religion to Follow?

Day to day realities : Buddhism and Hinduism ultimately deny the existence of all physical matter and desire as illusions to be escaped. Ultimately one cannot live in the real world where food is required to survive, debts really need to be paid with your paycheque that actually exists, and dangers such as big Mac trucks need to be avoided in order to survive. Religions such as Islam, Judaism, and Christianity enable you to live a non-compartmentalized life; you can live out your religious convictions every day without having to slip between ‘religious mode’ and ‘reality mode’.

Thank you for being such a pivotal part of the growth of our faith and allowing God to use you that way.
