God’s Work in Your Bible Reading

A spiritual taste of the soul [1 Peter 2:3] mightily helps the soul, in its reasonings on the word of God, and in judging of the true meaning of its rules; as it removes the prejudices of a depraved appetite, and naturally leads the thoughts in the right channel, casts a light on the word of God, and causes the true meaning, most naturally to come to mind through the harmony there is between the disposition and relish of a sanctified soul, and the true meaning of the rules of God’s word. Yea, this harmony tends to bring the texts themselves to mind, on proper occasions; as the particular state of the stomach and pallet, tends to bring such particular meets and drinks to mind, as are agreeable to that state. (Edwards, Religious Affections , cited in Sweeney, 74–75)

The One Surefire Way to Ruin Your Marriage

And if I may add, in the Hebrew translation of the Bible, God uses the word “Ezer” to describe Adam’s wife. It’s easy to look at the way woman is described in Genesis to simply be a “helper” for man. But the full meaning is much more beautiful than that. The root of “Ezer” is two-fold: 1. to rescue, to save 2. to be strong. So instead of just being a man’s helper, we’re called to be strong in their weakness. To fill the gaps of our spouse with strength. So if your spouse is forgetful, instead of having an unrealistic expectation that they’ll start remembering things, be their reminder.

Q & A With Dr. Craig: Are My Arguments Totally Nonsensical?

It seems that your following can only be pretending to agree with - and accept - your arguments, because they feel that they are supposed to understand them in order to be considered Christians. But in actuality, your arguments require more credulity to accept, than the core concepts of Christianity itself. You seem to be of the view that: it is difficult to challenge your arguments. This is not because they are good sound arguments; it is because they are totally nonsensical.

The decision by a university to warn theology students in advance they may find Jesus' crucifixion distressing and allow them to leave the class if it's too upsetting, is being branded "almost comedic". Reacting to the decision by the University of Glasgow, former-Moderator of the Free Church of Scotland Revd David Robertson said they should be prepared to encounter upsetting content. Speaking on Premier's News Hour, he said: "These are meant to be university students, they're meant to be the leaders of the future, they're meant to be our intelligentsia. If they can't cope with basic stuff like that, then one wonders whether they should be studying it all."

Worshiping with a Broken Heart

I walked into church the day after my heart broke. Broken, aching hearts fill the pews in each of our churches every Sunday. I walked into church the day after my heart broke. Although surrounded by community, the pain still felt intensely personal. “The heart knows its own bitterness” (Proverbs 14:10). The deep ache can feel as isolating as a prison cell. The enemy wants nothing more than to lock believers in that cell of pain, and keep us trapped in isolation. But God wants the opposite. Here are three things to remember when you are tempted to stay home on Sunday morning with a broken heart.

For more resources visit: In the award-winning film The Theory of Everything, the young Stephen Hawking describes cosmology as “a religion for intelligent atheists.” The film then explores the theological implications of two cosmological models defended by Hawking. Do these models in fact have the implications which Hawking attributes to them, and will cosmology play successfully the role of a surrogate religion? In the dialogue between science and theology, philosophy plays a crucial role. In this talk, Dr. Craig will respond to Hawking's claim to have eliminated the Creator of the Big Bang. Eric Metaxas :: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God - The Jesus Edition

Like his previous books in this style, Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God:  THE JESUS EDITION is a book that takes questions about the Son of God seriously enough to get silly — where appropriate.  Metaxas covers questions about Jesus’ life — Did He live at all?, His death — If He truly was the Son of God, why did He have to die?, His resurrection – - Did Jesus really come back after death?, and much more.   Apologetics has never been so much fun! PRAISE FOR Everything You Always Wanted to Know About God (but were afraid to ask)…

Gentleness and Respect

People have real struggles. The big, ultimate questions are real questions, and they don’t exist abstractly. Questions are asked by real people, people who are made in the image of God. That is why we must listen to their questions. Hear their struggles. Give them our attention. Make the time and effort.

Was the Apostle Paul an Apologist?

“The apostle Paul says what many pioneers of modern science believed, that nature itself is part of the evidence for the existence of God, ‘Since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities- his eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made. So that men are without an excuse.’”

Opposites Attract

Last summer I typed out the words of 1 Corinthians 13, and I keep them in a frame above my desk. When I am tempted to keep a record of wrongs (see verse 5), I go to these framed words. I pray for God to remind me how much he loves my husband, and how much Christ suffered so that I could have a godly marriage. I am still very far from conquering my relentless regard for self, and I am still adamant about a fat Christmas tree, but I know that our yoke is held firm by the One who put it there.

Don’t Waste Your Engagement: How to Prepare for Marriage

3. The next thing I would say to Evan is that these are golden months in which to set patterns of spiritual leadership in which you take the initiative to read the Bible, pray, think, study, and talk together about all kinds of biblical and spiritual realities. I am assuming that you agree that you both need to be on the same theological page. That is not an artificial expectation. This means that, if you are going to pull together shoulder to shoulder in marriage for some great purpose, which is what marriage is for, you have to be pulling in the same direction. That is, seeing God in the same way and seeing Christ and seeing the Holy Spirit and seeing faith and seeing love and salvation and heaven and hell and Satan and sin and holiness and obedience, seeing all these things in the same way. Otherwise, pulling together in harness will start to become very painful as you jerk each other around in different directions spiritually or, more likely, what happens is you just stop talking spiritually — which is worse. So, take the initiative and go deep into every dimension of the spiritual life that you can in these days.

Can Science Identify the Intelligent Designer?

We live in a world that values tolerance and religious pluralism. Because of this widespread attitude, perhaps it’s not surprising that one of the questions I’m most often asked by non-Christian academics relates to the identity of the Designer. They want to know, how does the scientific case for intelligent design specifically identify the God of the Bible as the Designer?

Social Media Addiction Is Real. Here's How You Can Break It

It seems like a thin line exists between seeking the fulfillment of a genuine need and allowing it to become an unhealthy obsession. The introduction of social media into this danger zone only makes it more difficult. For instance, how do we know when we're looking for affirmation (a genuine need) or validation (unhealthy obsession)?

The One Thing Couples Overlook in Marriage

In a fully redeemed world, every community would have a finely tuned radar for distress and dispatch someone to arrive at our front door—casserole in hand—offering to pray before we’ve even tweeted our need. That’s not been our experience. Over the years, we’ve learned that we have to take responsibility for whatever support, counsel, and practical help we lack. As we take responsibility, we shape the community. There’s risk involved with expressing need—which is part of why we tend to avoid it. If we bare our souls, will others judge us and potentially avoid us at the next social gathering? Maybe. But by asking for help, we learn to articulate our needs rather than resenting others for not meeting them.

Royal Caribbean Wants to Hire Someone to Go on Cruises and Post to Instagram

The lucky applicant will set sail for three weeks this summer on several luxury cruise ships, and get paid $3,700 to post images of all of the fun they are having. Although they are looking for someone who owns a smartphone and is good at taking pictures with it, the job requirements go out of the way to say that “Photocopying, administrator and tea-making skills are not required.”

Why is this so important? Because you can only manage what you measure. If you don’t know the measure of your faith, you can’t grow in your faith. If you don’t know the measure of your health, you can’t develop and grow in health. If you don’t know the measure of where you are financially, you can’t set financial goals. If you don’t know the measure of where you are spiritually or vocationally or relationally, then you can’t grow in those areas. You can only manage what you measure.

Do Your Career Choices Show You Trust in God or Yourself?

Knowledge and education are vital to surviving in our world. At young ages, we are sent to school to better understand the world in the hopes of successfully navigating it. Those who have not lacked education are among the most privileged individuals on this planet. Is it possible to be too educated? Absolutely not. But a danger we face with education is thinking we are in control of our lives and our future. After all, that’s the message sold to us in society: Go to college and you will get the perfect job. Get a 4.0 GPA and you will most likely end up in a high-paying job. Chase your dreams and you will be happy, the list goes on.

How Would Jesus Spend?

Money is one of those topics that can make some of us feel immense shame and guilt, and it makes others of us feel superior. But what if financial well-being was not just about how much money you had but about learning to relate to it better, not based on whether or not you had more money but rather based in how you’ve matured and embraced who you are and how God designed you? There is no money mold that God handed down from on high because, ultimately, it’s really not about money at all. It’s about you, God and how you and God partner together to build the Kingdom with what He’s given you.

'Third Wheels' Are Actually Great for Your Relationship

From Ephesians 5 and elsewhere, we understand that the main purpose of marriage, is to put the Gospel on display. In this image, the husband loves sacrificially like Christ loves the Church and the bride responds in confident service. They prefer and serve each other in a beautiful dance that puts Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers to shame. In this performance, couples are given the honor of reflecting God’s beacon of love in the Gospel message. An isolated couple might as well cover the illumination they’ve been entrusted with because no one can see it anyways. If you are a Christian in a marriage relationship, you have been entrusted with beautiful truths that are meant to shine bright for ALL to see, not just those who have lots in common with you.

7 Things the Bible Says About New Beginnings

There’s something in the human spirit that naturally draws toward new things and fresh beginnings are no different. 2016 has been a doozy of a year for many (seriously, what was that about?) and the prospect of its end brings the hope of a new start.

4 Things We All Need to Do Less of in 2017

“Comparison is the thief of joy.” Whoever said that would be rolling over in their grave if they saw Instagram. You can create whatever image of yourself you want with a picture. Add a cool filter and no one will know that you were just in tears about a fight you had with your mom. What they don’t know can’t hurt them. It’s like our society has made a complicit agreement to keep a veneer of perfection on social media. Problem is: We are all prone to envy.

Chris Pratt Describes How He Was Led to Faith in Christ

I was sitting outside a grocery store … And a guy named Henry came up and recognized something in me that needed to be saved. He asked what I was doing that night, and I was honest. I said, ‘My friend’s inside buying me alcohol.’ ‘You going to go party?’ he asked. ‘Yeah.’ ‘Drink and do drugs? Meet girls, fornication?’ I was like, ‘I hope so’ …

Why Keeping a Sabbath Should Be Your New Year's Resolution

Which is a decent enough justification to placate our conscious until we hear how serious God is about Sabbath: “Observe the Sabbath, because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it is to be put to death; those who do any work on that day must be cut off from their people.” (Exodus 31:14) Or begin questioning what God was really up to on that seventh day: Why did God rest? Was He weary from His work? Was His rest a withdrawal from the world? What’s so holy about a nap? And then we read the Gospels and see a sea of instances where Jesus capitalized on the fact that it was the Sabbath, almost as if He wanted to reclaim the essence of its beauty, depth and sacredness.

Questioning the Bible: An Interview with Jonathan Morrow

Can a thoughtful person today seriously believe that God wrote a book? An unprecedented number of sophisticated attacks are being waged on the origin, credibility, and reliability of the Bible. It can be difficult to know what to say when skepticism and secularism take over so many conversations. Confusion and doubt about the Bible being God’s Word are becoming as common inside the church as they are in the broader culture.
