Welcome to the Top Ten Scientific Problems with Biological and Chemical Evolution

For those who follow the debate over origins, Dr. Scott's words are as unsurprising as they are familiar. It seems that almost on a daily basis, we find the news media quoting evolutionary scientists declaring that materialist accounts of biological and chemical evolution are "fact." Students who take college-preparatory or college-level courses on evolution are warned that doubting Darwinism is tantamount to committing intellectual suicide -- you might as well proclaim the Earth is flat. 2 Such bullying is enough to convince many that it's much easier on your academic standing, your career, and your reputation to just buy into Darwinism. The few holdouts who remain are intimidated into silence.

A fallacy is an error in reasoning. That is, it is a piece of bad logic. Just as it is a good idea to avoid eating bad food, it is also a rather good idea to avoid bad reasoning. Unfortunately, bad reasoning is all too common—it pours out of the television and infests the web like an army of venomous spiders. Perhaps even worse than the fallacies inflicted from the outside are self-inflicted fallacies. These can lead people to make poor decisions about matters great and small. Fortunately, there is a defense against bad reasoning, namely knowledge. This concise book provides the reader with definitions and examples of seventy-six common fallacies—the knowledge a person needs to defend herself in a world awash in fallacies. The focus is on providing the reader with definitions and examples of these common fallacies rather than being a handbook on winning arguments or a text on general logic.

Looking at Science to Find God?

3) As a philosophy graduate, I really want to cheer Beckwith’s elevation of philosophical inquiry over scientific discovery. I think he’s absolutely correct that the sturdiest road towards theism is the philosophical one. But again, I think he’s knocking down an argument that Metaxas doesn’t intend to make. Nothing in Metaxas’s article suggests that science should be the “starting point” for theism. To go back to my miraculous cure, it is not inconsistent at all to believe that God is real whether or not He heals terminal cancer and also to proclaim such instances of healing as genuine manifestations of God’s reality.

6 From Emergent to Evangelical, through Apologetics - Stand to Reason Blog

I became a Christian at 24 after a cancer diagnosis. I had been an atheist for 10 years but came to God on my knees in desperation. I left Capitol Hill (and politics altogether) to learn about Christianity. I attended what many believed was a conservative seminary but had slowly slipped into liberalism by the time I arrived in 1999. I was sold on “higher criticism” (or a skeptical approach to the historicity and inerrancy of Scripture) and joined the then growing “Emergent Church” movement. Within a few years, I was where Rob Bell is now—a soft universalist with a condescending attitude toward conservatives. Yet, I was also spiritually dead and was struggling with depression. I was quickly sliding back into the atheism I had thought I had left behind when I went to my knees to pray for my life in 1997….

The Glorious, Radical, Ordinary Christian Life

Christians are supposed to have an impact on the world in which we live. Like the followers of Jesus in Acts 17:6–7, present-day followers of Jesus should be turning the world upside down. However, when we think about turning the world upside down for Jesus, we often think we must live “radical” lives. That is, we need to sell our Chevrolet, give up movies, and relocate to the Bolivian jungle in order to engage nomadic peoples who’ve never heard the gospel. That is the real way we make a serious impact.

Bible Reading Is an Art

Or more generally, just ask, How do you go about reading the Bible? You might see it on his face that it’s a tough question to answer. Not because there aren’t some basic, little “scientific” things, like the basics of reading and comprehension, or the various patterns and methods he’s developed for feeding his own soul over the years, but because he’s learned that so much of good Bible reading is an art. It’s a skill learned in engaging the task, not mainly sitting under formal instruction. And those who have read their Bibles most are the ones who have learned the craft best.

Hakkens proposed the concept in 2013 as Phonebloks and has since collaborated with Google, under codename Project Ara, to create a viable platform for consumers in the near future. Among the many challenges is the fact that smartphones are becoming cheaper, and in comparison, a modular system may actually wind up costing more, which defeats the purpose really. And could a phone design be reconfigured for function without sacrificing form? Hardly anybody wants a bulky blocky phone.

Christian rapper Derek Minor, born Derek Johnson, Jr. in Pontiac, Michigan, moved at a young age with his mother to Tennessee. Johnson attended Middle Tennessee State University and graduated with a degree in recording industry management. From 2006 through 2008, the budding rapper and producer, known then as...

4 Things the Church Learned in 2014

1 Corinthians 2:10-16... "But to us God has revealed them through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God... For who among men knows the things of man, except the spirit of man which is in him? In the same way, the things of God also no one has known except the Spirit of God... But we have received not the spirit of the world but the Spirit which is from God, that we may know the things which have been graciously given to us by God;... Which things also we speak, not in words taught by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual things with spiritual words... But a soulish man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him and he is not able to know them because they are discerned spiritually... But the spiritual man discerns all things, but he himself is discerned by no one... For who has known the mind of the Lord and will instruct Him? But we have the mind of Christ."

Church: Set Up Your Singles

Local churches are intended to be the incubator for future marriages, not online dating sites and hookup apps. Can God use the common grace of online matchmaking? Absolutely. Is it best? I would argue no. No matter how perfectly crafted our online dating profiles, how strategic our selfies, or how appealing we can make ourselves sound, these sites cannot replace the efforts of those who know and love us in helping us find a spouse. Pew research tells us, “Even today, the vast majority of Americans who are in a marriage, partnership, or other serious relationship say that they met their partner through offline—rather than online—means."

Why Does God Leave Muslims Deluded? | Reasonable Faith

But here the problem is worse for the Christian than for the Muslim. For the Bible affirms that God loves these people and wills their salvation. By contrast the Qur’an states repeatedly that Allah does not love sinners or unbelievers. His love is given only to those who first love him. So there’s no problem if Allah simply writes such people off. Of course, I think this only serves to expose the moral deficiency of the Islamic concept of God. As a person whose love is partial, conditional, and has to be earned, Allah is not the greatest conceivable being and therefore not God. The problem is not that God would be unjust to leave people in their delusion but that He would be unloving.

The gospel tells the story of God, man, Christ, and a requisite response. It heralds the news about creation, fall, redemption, and a glorious consummation. And it is the only thing that will build a church. All that other stuff only builds a crowd.

"The goal is actually to tie them in all together," Tagle says. So they will collectively act like an entire human being on a chip — at least from the point of view of a scientist interested in testing drugs. (The brain-on-a-chip will not think, of course.)

Evil is a True Thing

To name but a few: True Detective , once again, was a tale mostly of grappling with evil. Rust Cohle may talk like a nihilist for most of the show, and he dismisses with irritation the religious people he encounters. But he's the archetypal tortured soul, a man who thinks he may need to be a sort of scapegoat for humanity. Once he starts having visions—and especially when he encounters true evil (linked to extreme violence against women and children)—his tune starts to change. “There's a weight that's got fishhooks in your soul,” someone tells him, and later he says that the “world needs bad men to keep other bad men from the door.”

Innovative Apologetics: Bill Nye in His Book "Undeniable" Says The Truth of Divine Creation Harms Kids

My Boring Christian Testimony

Everything important to know in life, I embraced by age 3 or 4. God my Creator, Jesus my Savior, the Spirit my Helper, the Bible my rule. To someone who didn’t come from a Christian home or grow up in the church, this probably sounds lovely. But it took me most of my life to appreciate just how extraordinary was the grace I had received in ordinary circumstances.

Being the Third Wheel is Underrated

Whether you realize it or not, your friends are paying attention and want what’s best for you. They’re not just going to root for you when you’re making important choices, but they’re going to keep you accountable when you try to compromise or make some bad shortcuts. The best way to keep yourself from settling with a mundane job or a lackluster relationship is to surround yourself with people who will lovingly smack some sense into you—and sometimes couples make a good team to point out potential red flags.

An All-Consuming Passion for Jesus

TK: First, I’ve seen that the gospel is the power of God unto salvation. It’s not merely mental assent—it is a radical, inside-out work of God that’s made to last. There’s no other explanation for the story (and this is just one of many witnesses to this truth that I’ve met) of a Muslim sheik in the Horn of Africa who beat his sons for becoming Christians but who later became a Christian. The persecutor is now the pastor of the church in what had previously been a one-hundred-percent-Muslim village. The second thing is that Christ is in us, with us, and for us. This explains the peace in the heart of Gulzar, whom I met in Pakistan. His house had been looted by Muslim mob action and his church burned to the ground. Yet he was confidently quoting Scripture to me, saying, “Let not your heart be troubled… . I go to prepare a place for you” (John 14:1-2), a place that no one can burn down. It’s the explanation for the extraordinary joyful boldness of a brother in North Africa who, on the day he was baptized, sent a group message to everyone in his phone contact list saying, “Walit Masihi!” (I have become a Christian).

Truthbomb Apologetics: Book Giveaway: Joseph Smith's Tritheism by Dayton Hartman

"Few figures in North American religious history are quite as enigmatic as Joseph Smith. His unabashed adherence to tritheism gave birth to one of the most influential religious movements in American history. Many attempts have been made to engage his life and unorthodox theology. However, Joseph Smith's Tritheism is a unique text that blends church history, thoughtful theological exegesis, and evangelical apologetics in an attempt to engage Joseph Smith's theology anew."

Book Review: New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis (Second Edition)

In addition to dealing with exegetical, semantic, and linguistic issues related to context and usage, the articles provide excellent statistical information about various terms, noting not only the total number of times that a term is used, but also showing the spread of that usage. Thus, it can be helpful to know that a term used, say, 20 times in the New Testament is found almost exclusively in the range of a small portion of the New Testament text. The exegetical and linguistic analysis is often illuminating. Most importantly, the pastor using this material correctly can be confident that any exegetical study incorporated into his sermon is biblically accurate. Those of us who have incorporated study into our sermons that we later learn was not correct will appreciate the solid scholarship behind this work.

WORLD | What if? | Marvin Olasky | Dec. 27, 2014

This past May I proposed we create President’s Questions sessions in the Senate chamber, like the Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons. Vile’s book showed me that scholar/journalist Michael Novak suggested the same thing 40 years ago: “The president should be obliged on a biweekly basis to come before leaders of the opposition for a public hour-long accounting of his policies.” Didn’t happen then, but now that the major public tests for candidates involve responding to questions, shouldn’t we have them do in office what they did to get elected?

Obama administration to push for more government control in 2015

The very funny thing about this is how unionized blue-collar Democrats complain that they cannot compete with countries abroad, then vote in the very people that make them uncompetitive. You can bet that leaders in other low-cost countries do not pass laws to make them less competitive. And that’s why everything is manufactured abroad. Democrat voters bring these problems on themselves by electing socialists who hamstring American industry.

God Is Not Found Through Science

We watched Terrence Malick’s amazing Tree of Life last night, with its scenes of the creation balanced by the life of a small-town Texas family in the fifties. In one of the early scenes, the mother says, “The nuns taught us there were two ways through life – the way of nature and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you’ll follow.” The point isn’t that God created the universe and therefore He exists, but that He created me capable of having a relationship with Him (grace) and therefore He exists. My act of faith as a Christian is not to say I believe God created all things (which puts Him out there and me over here) but to fall to my knees and say Lord have mercy.

How do we know there is a God, and that the Christian God is exclusively true?
