'12 Strong': Actors Chris Hemsworth, Michael Peña Talk Dangers of Doubt and the Power of Belief (Video)

"'12 Strong' is one of the great unknown stories of American valor. In the wake of Sept. 11th, twelve brave U.S. soldiers dropped everything and ventured into an unknown land, outnumbered 5,000 to 1 to complete one of the most successful special forces missions of all time. Once there, the soldiers develop an uneasy partnership with the Northern Alliance to take down the Taliban and its al-Qaida allies. Outgunned and outnumbered, they had to use the rudimentary tactics of the Afghan horse soldiers rather than state-of-the-art warfare to battle the heavily-armed Taliban. This is the amazing story of these 12 heroes and the families who wondered if they would come home alive," a description of the film explains.

How to Defend the Christian Faith: Four Principles to Get Started

His statement about missing evidence was frustrating. For the last hour or so, not to mention for the hours spent in discussion online and in person, I had presented him with exactly what he had been asking for: evidence from history, science, cosmology, and philosophy. I have been studying this exact question of evidence for years, and I had what I thought were irrefutable arguments, certain to destroy every possible objection and answer nearly every question about the Christian faith. I brought all these to bear in my conversation with Chris only to be told that I had not presented any evidence at all.

Congressman Jim Banks - Equal Justice for All Includes Our Unborn

Last year, the House took an important step by passing the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. This bill would prohibit any elective abortion attempt on an unborn child who is 20 weeks or older, the age at which research shows us children are able to feel pain. Sixty-three percent of Americans support a 20-week abortion ban, and I am hopeful that our colleagues in the Senate will pass this bill later this month.

Cold Case Christianity

In this rebroadcasted pair of interviews from Stand to Reason’s #STRask Podcast, J. Warner Wallace is on a timer and answers questions about free will, consistent pro-life views, Jesus dying for sin, the Black Lives Matter movement and the truth value of Christianity: If the ability to do otherwise is a requirement of love, then given our new natures, how will we love the Lord in the new earth? How would you reply to this: If pro-lifers were sincere about when life begins, wouldn’t they have funerals for miscarriages? Why did Jesus have to die for us? What is a Christian response to the Black Lives Matter movement? How would it affect your life if you suddenly recognized that Christianity is just another false man-made religion? To listen to additional Stand to Reason podcasts, please visit their archive page. As many of you may know, our wonderful sister in Christ, Melinda Penner (the host who is interviewing J. Warner on this podcast) suffered a serious brain injury and is recovering slowly. Please pray for Melinda as we continue to celebrate her work as a Christian apologist and ambassador.

What Does 'Gospel' Really Mean?

We often describe God’s gracious offer of Salvation as “good news”, and while this makes sense, given the magnitude of God’s gift to us, there are actually good etymological reasons for describing Salvation in this way. The word “Gospel” is derived from an Anglo-Saxon word, “godspel”, or “good story” and was substituted for the original Greek word “euaggelion” which first signified “a present given to one who brought good tidings”, or “a sacrifice offered in thanksgiving for such good tidings having come”. In later Greek uses, it was employed for the good tidings themselves. That’s exactly what God is offering us with the Gospel; “good news” about what he did for us through Jesus Christ:

5 Levels of Christian Faith

We often use the word “faith” to describe the core of someone’s beliefs—but people of differing religions use the term in very different ways. This has challenged me to more carefully probe the distinctive features of the word “faith” from the perspective of historical Christianity. Faith is much more profound than simply recounting our personal conversion story. Rather, Christian faith entails at least five parts, each building on top of the next.

GK Chesterton the Apologist

When we think of Chesterton today, we think of Father Brown, the quintessential priest-detective. But, like Conan Doyle, who believed his more serious writings were more important than his Sherlock Holmes stories, Chesterton’s central thrust (even in the persona of Father Brown) was elsewhere. At heart, Chesterton was a controversalist, or, better, an apologist. What he really wanted to achieve was to bring his contemporaries (and us!) back to sanity by showing the truth of classic Christian orthodoxy.

Biblical faith is informed by evidence

If feelings don’t inform faith, then what does? Biblical faith is informed by evidence. Jesus said, “Even though you do not believe me, believe the works” (John 10:38). What works is He talking about? The blind are seeing. The lame are walking. The deaf are hearing. The dead are rising. He is saying, “Believe based on the objective evidence.” Emotions can be unreliable guides to the truth. But evidence doesn’t lie.

The Bible Does Not Approve of Everything It Records

Our young people face an unprecedented assault on their faith. It seems to come at them from every side. One area that is effectively used by the enemy is social media. On media like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, it is very easy for people to share rhetorically powerful posts that can leave young Christians scrambling to find an answer.

Forgive Us Our What? Three Ways We Say the Lord’s Prayer

Our modern understanding of “debt” might dull the edge this word had for Jesus’s original hearers. We hear it through the filters of our experience, which is different from Jesus’s audience and most of our human ancestors. Debtors’ prisons are an archaic thing of the unenlightened past, and we don’t have kings throwing us into them (Matthew 18:23–35). We have merciful bankruptcy laws that protect us in ways inconceivable to past generations. So “debt” might not carry for us the sense of threat it did for them.

Adam and the Genome and Synteny | Evolution News

To return to our “genome as book” metaphor, we also observe that humans and chimpanzees not only have nearly identical genomes, but that our genomes are organized in the same spatial pattern. At the sentence, paragraph, and chapter level, our two “books” are organized in the same way. As before, there is no biological reason why this needs to be the case. We, or chimpanzees, would be fine with our genes in very different spatial arrangements, and placing our genes into a different arrangement would be well within God’s creative abilities. Yet what we observe, once again, is consistent with the hypothesis that the present-day human and chimpanzee genomes are slightly modified descendants of what was once the genome of a shared ancestral species.

How ‘Oh Happy Day’ Gave Gospel a New Beat

“Oh Happy Day” also made it easier for the Staple Singers, who continually updated their sound in the late ‘60s with a series of classic albums for Epic and Stax. And, in time, “Oh Happy Day” would enable and inspire the Winans, Kirk Franklin, Tye Tribbett, and many of today’s most compelling gospel artists. Gospel has never more popular than it is now.

How Our Sex Life Manifests Our Soul Health

It is not at first an ignorance problem. Nobody’s main problem is an ignorance problem. Everybody’s main problem is a preference problem. “I don’t want you in my head. I don’t want you in my heart. I don’t want you to be supremely valuable. I will not have a God in my life who is supremely valuable. I just won’t.” That is the meaning of the first half of verse 28: “Since they did not see fit to acknowledge” — or “did not approve” — I don’t want it. I don’t approve of having God in my knowledge, — “[therefore] God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done.”

How to Become a Better Apologetics Communicator

No, I don’t mean profanity. I mean your vocabulary. If you’re like me, you’re immersed in the apologetics world. You read apologetics books, you listen to apologetics podcasts, you devour all things apologetics. So you’re used to the language, the ideas, the jargon. But your audience may not be. Find ways to communicate without using “insider” language. Always imagine what someone completely new to apologetics would think of your writing or talk. Have an “outsider” review your material (more on this later). And if you absolutely must use special apologetics vocabulary, be sure to carefully – and simply – define your terms.

Biblical Archaeology: Real People, Real Events

In 2008 an ostracon with five lines of paleo-Hebrew was found at Qeiyafa, near Beth Shemesh, about twenty miles from Jerusalem. Ongoing work has confirmed that this was a fortified Israelite (not Canaanite or Philistine) city dating as early as the eleventh century BC. Although it is debated, the fourth line may refer to the establishment of a king. If so, the reference may be to Saul, Israel’s first king and David’s immediate predecessor. In any event, the language is consistent with the language of Samuel and shows that its stories about the exploits of Israel’s kings could well have been recorded in the time of Samuel, Saul, and David, even if the final product was edited and completed at a much later time.

As a New Age Enthusiast, I Fancied Myself a Free Spirit and a Good Person

Coming to Christ changed not only my personal life but my intellectual life as well. My scholarly work has always focused on the best ways to educate the poor. So in 1996, after seeing a documentary about Mother Teresa, I decided I would volunteer with her organization, Missionaries of Charity, in Kolkata (then Calcutta). I spent two months tending to sick infants, performing some cleaning tasks, and running supplies to the mother house, where we would begin each day with Mass and a simple meal. One day, as I was sitting on a bench, waiting on some materials to take back to the orphanage, Mother Teresa herself walked straight up to me. She shook her finger and instructed, “God does not call everyone to serve the poor like he calls us, but God does call everyone to a Calcutta—you have to find yours!”

5 Reasons You Should Get Apologetics Training

But isn’t apologetics someone else’s job? Isn’t it reserved for pastors, Bible teachers, and other “intellectual” Christians? The answer is an unequivocal no. As C.S. Lewis said, the question is not if we are apologists, but whether we will be effective apologists. All of us are called to have an answer for our hope in Jesus Christ (e.g. 1 Peter 3:15 ).
