Fun Ways to Pep Up Your Marriage

And I think that really the women can often be the instigators. Now I'm not saying guys are off the hook, but I don't think it's up to the guys to plan the dates all the time. We've done stuff like with other couples. The girls and I got together and we said, okay, we're gonna do a mystery date for our guys. So, the first thing we did is, we went to dinner and then we got a roll of tokens for each of the guys. And we went and we played videogames and did Skee Ball and all of that kind of stuff. And then we went to a fancy pants place for dinner. And we all were in the same car and we all did this together. It took us no time to plan it. It took us very little money, but it was so much fun to be with other couples. And it's fun to be with your spouse with other people around. You get to see a different side of them. That's your encouragement crew.

How to Take a Stand While Turning the Other Cheek

There is a great temptation to take pride in our ideas for their own sake, but whatever true knowledge we have does not come from us, and it is not for our own self-aggrandizement. This is the lesson and caution of the Pharisees, who had the truth, but misused it. Jesus condemned the Pharisees because of this: “They tie up heavy, cumbersome loads and put them on other people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them” (Matthew 23:4). The Pharisees used ideas to serve themselves, not others. We should resist this temptation.

4 The First Book You Need to Read in 2015 | Cold Case Christianity

What if your best reasons to doubt God actually proved He exists? Frank examines claims critics of Christianity (and theism) typically offer to make the case against God’s existence, and shows how these aspects of reality actually require God’s existence in the first place. Frank’s book is brilliantly concise, including six chapters examining C – Causality, R – Reason, I – Information & Intentionality, M – Morality, E – Evil, and S – Science. As always, Frank presents the material in a memorable way, demonstrating how “…in order to construct any valid argument for atheism, the atheist has to steal tools from God’s universe because no such tools exist in the world of atheism.” Frank’s arguments are pointed and supported by many illustrations and examples. He demonstrates how theism forms the foundation for reason, morality and science, and how it best explains the causality, information and evil we see in our universe. These aspects of our existence are typically offered by skeptics as evidence against theism, but as Frank often says in his talks and presentations, “Atheists must sit in God’s lap in order to try to slap Him in the face.

Science Increasingly Makes the Case for God

In 1966 Time magazine ran a cover story asking: Is God Dead? Many have accepted the cultural narrative that he’s obsolete—that as science progresses, there is less need for a “God” to explain the universe. Yet it turns out that the rumors of God’s death were premature. More amazing is that the relatively recent case for his existence comes from a surprising place—science itself.

This year, I resolve to ban laptops from my classroom

This is not just vague worrying on my part. There’s now good research on the topic. Take, for instance, a recent study by two psychologists, Pam Mueller at Princeton University and Daniel Oppenheimer at UCLA. Mueller and Oppenheimer asked 67 undergraduates to watch videos of lectures. Half the students were randomly assigned to watch the lectures while taking notes on a laptop, while the other students were asked to watch the lectures while taking notes with paper and pen. Afterward, the students were all given an exam. The students who took notes longhand scored much higher on conceptual questions than did the students who used a laptop.

8 2015 The Gospel Coalition National Conference April 13-15, Orlando FL

Our 2015 National Conference seeks to stir longing for our ultimate home in heaven as we explore the sweep of redemption from creation to consummation, Genesis to Revelation. Our plenary speakers will unfold the Bible's teaching on eschatology, a topic of burning importance today. Along with these nine plenary sessions we've planned more than 50 workshops and focus gatherings led by speakers addressing topics including evangelism, homosexuality, student ministry, sexual abuse, faith and work, and much more. Join us as we worship God together in word and song with joyful hope that Jesus is returning soon.

9 Why a leading professor of new media just banned technology use in class

Anyone distracted in class doesn’t just lose out on the content of the discussion but creates a sense of permission that opting out is OK, and, worse, a haze of second-hand distraction for their peers. In an environment like this, students need support for the better angels of their nature (or at least the more intellectual angels), and they need defenses against the powerful short-term incentives to put off complex, frustrating tasks. That support and those defenses don’t just happen, and they are not limited to the individual’s choices. They are provided by social structure, and that structure is disproportionately provided by the professor, especially during the first weeks of class.

My Boring Christian Testimony

Everything important to know in life, I embraced by age 3 or 4. God my Creator, Jesus my Savior, the Spirit my Helper, the Bible my rule. To someone who didn’t come from a Christian home or grow up in the church, this probably sounds lovely. But it took me most of my life to appreciate just how extraordinary was the grace I had received in ordinary circumstances.

12 2015 The Gospel Coalition National Conference April 13-15, Orlando FL

Taking Aim at the Seven Deadly Sins

Like all sin, the Puritan divine John Owen argues in Overcoming Sin and Temptation,  these seven arise from our confused attempts to secure happiness apart from God. Each one of our sins, in other words, is a case of misdirected, disordered love. This perspective was developed by later thinkers like Aquinas and Dante, but it is also a window into the biblical category of idolatry, for idols in Scripture aren’t merely or mainly images of wood and stone, but substitutes for God himself, paramours we pursue with adulterous hearts when we’ve forsaken our divine lover. Seeing our sins as foolish and fatal attempts to find satisfaction apart from God should provoke both sorrow and hope in our hearts. Sorrow, when we realize our sins aren’t mere peccadilloes, but grievous offenses against the lover of our souls. But also hope, when we see that the thirst we sought to quench in broken cisterns is actually a yearning that God alone can satisfy.

Dave Barry's Year in Review 2014

PATRICK FARRELL: This photo of a little boy taken in January on Ile de la Tortue, an island off the northwest coast of Haiti, appeals to me because it tries to capture light and shadow — and the dichotomy of modern Haiti — in a 4-year-old child's face. Emerson Opstaint lost his father at sea after Remy Opstaint sailed from Ile de la Tortue to seek a better life for his family. He was among hundreds who risked deadly sea voyages this year from the island. Gorgeous and desolate, the rustic island's sun-bleached shores are strewn with the skeletons of wooden sailboats. Looking back on 2014, a year that ended with my mother's death, this photo means even more to me. She believed that children were the world's most precious natural resource — and hope for the future. That's what I see in Emerson's face. | PATRICK FARRELL MIAMI HERALD STAFF

When I Don't Desire God

It's liberating because it endorses our inborn desire for joy. And it's devastating because it reveals that we don't desire God the way we should. What do you do when you discover the good news that God wants you to be content in him, but then find that you aren't?

Biblical Archaeology’s Top Ten Discoveries of 2014

The world's potentially oldest clay tablet containing a flood story was found in the British Museum archives and put on display last January. Discovered by the museum's cuneiform curator, Irving Finkel, the tablet makes note of a round ark and is one of several versions of the flood story that have been found in Mesopotamian excavations. Although this tablet from ancient Babylon, dated around 1750 BC, may be the oldest found containing the flood story, it's not necessarily the earliest version of the story.

Jeremy Lin Reveals How He Plans to Bring Back Joy in God Amid Basketball Struggles

"My entire life has been a collection of miracles and instances where God has taken a 'bad' situation and turned it into a good one. And who knows…maybe God is preparing a miracle out of all this," Lin wrote. "When I focus on who God is and how much He loves me, I am able to live with joy and freedom from life's pressures or the results of basketball games. I hope that as I go through this 'valley' I can encourage you to turn to God and put your hope in Him!!"

Noble rescinds the Ten Commandments for 2015

Man cannot recognize grace with out knowing the law. How can you know you are a sinner if you don’t know what the commandments are. A tribal man does not know what is wrong with eating a human. To him it Is meat and if its a different color than him it could be a monkey for all he knows. But give him knowledge and law and he will recognize sin and open his heart to love the law by his own grace. There is a difference between not killing and not eliminating. To Many people live in a fruit cake world where they don’t know how to recognize what real grace is. Some don’t steal because ita a law some don’t steal because they love love their neighbor and wish to give to him and not take away. Noble is trying to produce a different play from the original author to make it interesting and entertain more people. This is not entertaining for God. Stick to the whole bible not just what interest you. Look at a life of marriage. It a union of law and love. You don’t cheat on you wife because its illegal but because she is your life and don’t want to give it up for no one.

Roman Catholic Theology and Practice

The spheres of nature and grace are thus in irreversible theological continuity, as “nature” in Catholicism incorporates both creation and sin, in contrast to the Reformed distinction between creation, sin, and redemption. This differing understanding of sin’s effect means grace finds in “Roman” nature a receptive attitude (enabling Catholicism’s humanistic optimism), as against a Reformed doctrine whereby entrenched sin leaves us unaware of our reprobate state. This stark anthropological difference underpins even Catholicism’s veneration of Mary. The Roman Catholic epistemological openness, its trust in man’s abilities, and its overall reliance on the possibility of human cooperation all converge in the articulated theology regarding the biblically sober figure of Mary. In this respect, Mariology expresses the quintessential characteristics of the Roman Catholic nature-grace motif.

20 Albums We’re Excited about in 2015

2 014 wasn't a bad year in music. We know this. But it's hard not to look at the embarrassment of riches coming down the river and not feel like Christmas has really only just gotten started. A big part of the fun of listening to music is finding that band you never expected to release an instant classic (this time last year, The War on Drugs didn't even make our most-anticipated albums of 2014. This week, they topped the list of our favorite albums ). But there's also something exciting about promising, exciting talents coming back for another round. Here are the ones we're most pumped about.

Two Orange Dwarf Stars To Reach The Solar System Might Wipe Out Human Race

Report says that the Earth can be affected in three ways. First, the gravity can attract comets into the inner solar system and the passing comets might harshly affect Earth's atmosphere due to the powerful ultraviolet radiation that the comets might cause. Second, a small number of the alleged stars might explode like supernova while passing through the Oort Cloud. Finally, the study says that the effect of the supernova remnants could cause long-term global cooling. The global cooling was also suspected to have wiped out the dinosaurs in the past and it is possible that's such incident might wipe out the human race millions of years from now.

Provide a financial incentive to encourage individuals to remain employed in a high-need profession or occupation — often in certain locations or at certain facilities. A Rare Media Defense of Human Exceptionalism

The media and the academy love anti-human exceptionalists. Why? I believe the unremitting assault on unique human value -- animal rights, nature rights, transhumanism, bioethics -- aims to break the spine of Judeo-Christian moral philosophy (not the faiths principally, but yes, in the end them too). That, in turn, is toward the end of destroying perceived moralism and opening the door to treating the most weak and vulnerable among us as objects.

A Story About Faith - How to Illustrate Biblical Faith - Apologetics Guy

Great article Mikel! Over the past 6 months I’ve thought about why I believe what I do and where my faith in Jesus comes from. Sometimes, honestly speaking, I have even doubted. The thing though that consistently comes back to me is all the things Christ has done for me. From saving my marriage from inevitable divorce to healing our then 9 month old daughter from an unknown illness (at one time thought to be liver cancer) to everything else in-between. It’s not the blind leap that has built my faith but the answers I have received along the way when I truly sought the face of God. It’s knowing Him, the relationship with Him, the evidence of Him, that has built my faith. This is why I believe what I believe.

Being the Third Wheel is Underrated

Whether you realize it or not, your friends are paying attention and want what’s best for you. They’re not just going to root for you when you’re making important choices, but they’re going to keep you accountable when you try to compromise or make some bad shortcuts. The best way to keep yourself from settling with a mundane job or a lackluster relationship is to surround yourself with people who will lovingly smack some sense into you—and sometimes couples make a good team to point out potential red flags.

Doug Groothuis: How Jazz Can Shape Apologetics - DEFEND Mag

What, then, could this emphasis on mastering material and improvising (in both senses above) have to do with apologetics? Just as jazz musicians, apologists need to “know their charts” by having spent much “time in the woodshed.” That is, they need to master the standard apologetic arguments on the nature of truth and faith, the arguments for God’s existence (natural theology), the reliability of the Bible, the deity and resurrection of Christ, the case against rival worldviews (atheism, pantheism, polytheism, Buddhism, Islam) and much more. However, knowing the arguments (the charts) is not the same as offering the arguments in various interpersonal settings. These include one-on-one, in a small group, in a larger group, in a lecture, in a sermon, on line, in a postal card, and more. This demands inventiveness, being prepared “in the moment” to size up the scene, seize the moment, and jam accordingly. Apologetic witness should never be stilted or clichéd, just as jazz is never hidebound to one way of playing a tune. As Phillip Brooks said of preaching long ago, apologetics is “truth through personality.

Fake peer review fells two more papers - Retraction Watch

A review, based on which the editorial decision had been made, was found to be falsified. Using a fictitious account, a review was submitted under the name of a known scientist without their knowledge. Consequently, the Editor supervising the review process was misled into accepting the paper based upon a review he assumed was performed by a well-known expert in the field. This represents a violation of the peer-review process and publishing ethics standards.
