Book of Mormon Fails - Christian Research Institute

There is a problem. No archaeological evidence for a language such as Reformed Egyptian hieroglyphics. No archaeological evidence for the great civilizations chronicled in the Book of Mormon. No archaeological evidence for lands such as the land of Moron that is described in Ether 7. No anthropological evidence that the Nephites and the Lamanites migrated from Jerusalem to Mesoamerica. Indeed, both archaeology and anthropology militate against the people, places and particulars that are part and parcel of the Book of Mormon and demonstrate conclusively that the book is little more than the product of a fertile and you might say enterprising imagination.

Understanding Adam’s Fall - Christian Research Institute

Now we cannot know what would have happened if someone else is in the Garden in their place. We know this that our identity is bound up in the identity of Adam and Eve. We have all fallen into sin because of Adam’s sin. He is our representative but the beautiful thing is that if we receive the second Adam, and in Scripture the second Adam is Jesus Christ, then Jesus Christ will come into our hearts and restore the relationship that was broken by Adam’s sin (Rom. 5:15-21; 1 Cor. 15:20-22, 45).

How Old is the Earth? by Chris Sherrod

There are two main views among Christians.  Old earth creationists (OEC), also known as progressive creationists, believe God created the universe and all life forms in stages separated by long periods of time.  They believe the geologic record accurately portrays a very long earth history.  Young earth creationists (YEC) believe the universe and all life forms were created in six successive 24-hour days, meaning earth is only thousands of years old.  Major arguments for each view include the following:

QUESTION: How do you answer sceptics who say that our universe doesn’t need a designer because it’s just a part of a bigger multiverse which is composed of all kinds of universes?  No matter how improbable our universe looks, the chances are that there will be some just like it somewhere in the multiverse.  If you deal the cards enough times, eventually every hand will come up sooner or later. — Bill

Church Is Supposed to Be Messy

The Church was made to be messy. It isn’t a spiritual social club; it’s a shelter. A refuge for the misused and misunderstood. A lighthouse for the lost, not a spotlight for the spiritual. A place where we can look up from the messes we’ve made and discover that we’re not the only ones who make them.

Apologetics and Your Kids: Avoiding Lazy Thinking

Last time I drew attention to some fallacious ideas which circulate on the airwaves and in popular culture. There are many more. In fact, even Christians have manufactured some pretty misleading mottoes and aphorisms which they use as watchwords instead of Scripture. Perhaps I’ll come back to that later, but right now I want to press on with the subject of worldviews.

How to Live Under an Unqualified President

2. A leader should be dependable, trustworthy, reliable . To invest someone with leadership is a trust. But Donald Trump treats language — the medium of truth — as a wax nose to be bent and molded to create a desired outcome, whether it corresponds to the truth or not. But where truth is treated with such indifference or contempt, the foundations of justice are crumbling. There is no recourse for the poor, if the powerful say that truth is what they say it is.

13 The Briefing 01-19-17 - AlbertMohler.com

Something else to understand is that prior to the period just before and just after World War II, the American federal government had virtually nothing to do with public education, certainly in what we now know as grades K-12. That was understood to be the responsibility of local communities, eventually also recognized as the responsibility of the states. During the 1950s federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, invaded the local control of those schools by means of court mandates, and the radical expansion of the power of America’s national government in the 1960s and beyond meant that local control of education largely became a charade. It was an illusion. The federal government has taken over more and more of that control. It has exerted that control first and foremost through the power of the purse. It’s a complicated system whereby monies are taken from the individual states through taxpaying citizens, sent to the federal government, and then sent back in the form of federal funding of local education, back to local communities often through the states. Of course there is also the role of the federal government in this very expanded government to control the schools in terms of what they teach.

Theology Can Blind You to God

The Story of Reality: Apologist Greg Koukl Discusses His New Book

Nowadays, people have a habit of relativizing religion, reducing it “your truth” versus “my truth” versus “their truth,” and that’s the end of it. But as I say in the book, “If the Story is not accurate to reality, it’s not any kind of truth at all. So it can never be ‘my truth’ or ‘your truth,’ even though we may believe it. It can only be our delusion or our mistake or our error, but it can never be our ‘truth.”” (32) I want people to see that Christianity claims to be true in the deep sense, and if it isn’t, then it solves nothing at all.

13 Ideas for Your Next Christian Tattoo

I love Relevant and enjoy reading articles of all kinds on here- I even made it my home page, so I would get on social media less, and read Christian-based articles more. I even thought this article was entertaining, and more wholesome than most "tattoo fail" articles. All that to say, something that has been really bothering me lately is the "look" that Christians in their 20-somethings feel they have to fill. There is all this pressure to get cool tattoos/piercings, the latest haircut, hipster clothing, the most smooth espresso, and organic breakfast pastries (OH, and not to mention get the most artsy Instagram frame to capture it all) to fit into the modern church scene. I mean, look at the model for this article- super attractive, cutting edge style, tattoo sleeve- the whole bit. I worry we are getting too caught up in how we look, than how we treat and include others. Am I the only one who is intimidated when I walk into church, and I am surrounded by people with brand new Warby Parker glasses, and $6 lattes from the local roaster? Many people buy their favorite coffee every morning, drop hundreds of dollars on watches, glasses, or shoes, but haven't dropped money in the offering plate for months.

Single Women Need Not Fear Submission

If we marry an unbelieving or ungodly man, we shouldn’t expect him to love us like Christ loves the church. But if we marry a man with a heart submitted to God’s, we need not fear submitting to him. If we are afraid of what submission to godly authority might take from us, our response should not be first to challenge the authority, but to examine our fears. When Paul says husbands are to love their wives the way Christ loves the church (Ephesians 5:25), he gives us a portrait of the type of man we should someday marry, and submit to, in our part of imaging the relationship between Christ and his church (Ephesians 5:22–23).

5 Things Keeping You From the Life You Want

The world is full of contradictions. It tells us that we can have it our way and still live a righteous life. In my personal opinion, I haven't found this to be true. Being who you want to be outside of God’s plan for your life means you will be crushed under the reality of sin. Submitting to who God designed you to be means living free of this world’s bondage over your life. The more in tune we are with Scripture and our relationship with Jesus Christ, the less of this world's weight we will feel.

The New Corded Phone

“Even if young adults work hard to mask their feelings, the 24/7 stream of social media and the ever-presence of smartphones become a roller coaster of banality, plan-making, fun, disappointment, stress, hope, pride, loneliness, distraction, showing off, pressure, and a million other things,” Freitas writes. “On the surface, this sounds very human. Any social situation can be wonderful and fun or stressful and awful, and everything in between. Life is messy and angst-ridden, full of unexpected potholes, words better left unspoken, and painful disappointments, just as it is full of joy and love and those moments that no one ever wants to forget. Social media reflects this reality. But it doesn’t just reflect this reality. It adds another dimension to it, enhancing this reality by making it public and constant” (249).

26 Reasons To Believe : Does Dinosaur Tissue Challenge Evolutionary Timescales? A Response to Kevin Anderson, Part 2

As for Anderson’s third point, it is true that the reaction mediated by iron and oxygen (which drives cross-linking) alters amino acids. And it is true that unaltered amino acids are found in the fossil specimens. But these two results are not mutually exclusive. How is that possible? Because chemical reactions don'[t necessarily go to completion. To put it another way, during the preservation process, it is unlikely that all the amino acids comprising dinosaur proteins reacted via the iron and oxygen mediated reactions. Some of the amino acids will remain unaltered—even highly reactive ones. It is noteworthy that the molecular profiles of materials extracted from dinosaur fossils show a relative dearth of less stable amino acids and an abundance of more durable amino acids, exactly as expected if the amino acids come from the remnants of ancient protein specimens. 4

The Inexplicable Fine-Tuning of the Foundational Forces in Our Universe

The appearance of fine-tuning in our universe has been observed by theists and atheists alike. Even physicist Paul Davies (who is agnostic when it comes to the notion of a Divine Designer) readily stipulates, “Everyone agrees that the universe looks as if it was designed for life.” Oxford philosopher John Leslie agrees: “it looks as if our universe is spectacularly ‘fine-tuned for life’. By this I mean only that it looks as if small changes in this universe’s basic features would have made life’s evolution impossible.” The foundational “laws of nature” are amazingly fine-tuned; there is very little room for alteration. The smallest modifications of these laws would completely destroy the possibility of life in the universe. Theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking says the laws of physics “appear fine-tuned in the sense that if they were altered by only modest amounts, the universe would be qualitatively different, and in many cases unsuitable for the development of life…The emergence of the complex structures capable of supporting intelligent observers seems to be very fragile.

Frank interviews his good friend and author Greg Koukl about his latest book. Biblical Christianity is more than just another private religious view. It’s more than just a personal relationship with God or a source of moral teaching. Christianity is a picture of reality. It explains why the world is the way it is. When the pieces of this puzzle are properly assembled, we see the big picture clearly. Christianity is a true story of how the world began, why the world is the way it is, what role humans play in the drama, and how all the plotlines of the story are resolved in the end. In The Story of Reality, best-selling author and host of Stand to Reason, Gregory Koukl, explains the five words that form the narrative backbone of the Christian story.

Singleness: My Only Companion

My perpetual state of singleness is an enigma, but it is not for lack of trying. I’m certainly not a hermit. I travel, take in festivals, go to events, enjoy concerts, and attend academic talks to satisfy my intellectual curiosity. I’ve even tried online dating, which only resulted in “situationships”—those faux relationships that revolve on an axis of grey, refusing to be black or white, constrained by an unspoken mutual attraction and enmeshed with all the anxiety and heartbreak that comes with a relationship. Yet after enduring all of it for four to six months—or even a year—heartbreak and sorrow were the only evidence that something had transpired (despite the absence of the “girlfriend” title).

Why Are There So Many Atheists on College Campuses?

For the last several years I have done a lot of outreach on a major college campus. I have also been the director r of an apologetics ministry as well. On the college campus where I am there are a lot of atheists. One a weekly basis, I must talk to at least four to five atheists a week. Of course, I also talk to plenty of agnostics as well. But over the years I have seen several patterns emerge. In other words, when I probe deeper and ask students why they are atheists or how they define their atheism, I see the same things. So here is what I continue to see:

Self-Worth and Ministry

Most people get their self-worth from their vocations and this no less true for those in Christian ministry. Most Christians in ministry—whether apologetics or other Christian ministry—want to become renowned, or at least more well-known, more respected than they are. We see other renowned ministers and we wish they could have the renown they have and we strive to get it because we base our self-worth on our ministry success. Many of us Christians realize that we will never be Tim Keller, William Lane Craig, or [fill in the blank of your favorite minister or apologist] _____________, but we are trying to get as close to famous as we possibly can.

44 What Are the Roles of Faith and Reason in Christianity? Part 2

Ahhh–The first part of your series relied on the fallacy of arugmentum ad populum. This time, you are using argumentum ad verecundiam–or the “appeal to authority. Just as almost everyone thought the earth was flat at one time, but this was shown to be false–many scholars may believe Jesus is real–but that does not make it true. There are also many biblical scholars that do not believe Jesus was god. Truthfully, only people who do not know how to think critically believe anything without evidence and argument when there is evidence that proves otherwise, and, as I illustrated earlier, if we go by the notion that “if it was written in a book, and people said things really happened in this book, then it must be true”–then Krishna is god, as the Bhagavad Gita tells us.

Learning to Love the Church

When I got home I went to the public library and found pictures of cradles. I decided on an early American hooded cradle, sketched out plans, went to a specialty wood ship, and chose some Honduras mahogany. Most afternoons I came home an hour or so early from my parish duties to my shop and worked on that cradle. I decided to finish it with applications of Tung oil. I worked on each piece of the cradle with the finest grade of sandpaper, over and over. I then went to steel wool, over and over. Each application of Tung oil deepened the color. After several applications it seemed like the wood glowed from within. I worked with each piece of the cradle—shaping it, holding it, rubbing it over and over and over—and all the time anticipating the baby that would be in that cradle, over and over and over.

8 Major Worldviews (Part 1)

Before the website transferred from pastorbrianchilton.wordpress.com to bellatorchristi.com, I had written an article on the major worldviews across the globe. I presented six major worldviews at the time. While I still think the previous article treated the most major of worldviews, I have come to realize after reading Douglas Groothius’ book, Christian Apologetics: A Comprehensive Case for Biblical Faith, that other major worldviews exist that should be discussed and incorporated into the list. [1] So, let’s revisit the major worldviews in this article. The goal of the article will be to notify the reader of each belief and will show how Christian theism triumphs. In addition, the Christian apologist will need to understand the starting points that must be taken with each worldview.

Introducing Lent to your Congregation

I will never forget saying goodbye to the church in which I served as an assistant pastor. As a full-time church planting resident, I had an opportunity to preach once a month for three years. I took this responsibly seriously and worked diligently to prepare and craft each sermon for maximum spiritual impact. Each time, I prayed for spiritual fruit to be produced. As my time drew to an end and the congregation said their goodbyes, a few people mentioned my preaching in passing. But, to my surprise, the most common refrain was about my parenting. I heard things like: “I was blessed to watch you be a father to your kids in church,” and “I appreciate the way you and Laura work together to raise your family.”

Reasons To Believe : More Archaeological Evidence for the Bible’s Historical Accuracy

The Bible devotes twenty-one chapters to describing the history of King Solomon’s reign and the extent, wealth, power, and organization of Solomon’s empire. Many scholars presumed that these descriptions were just as exaggerated and embellished as are the annals of famous kings in the nations bordering Israel during the BC era. What Ben-Yosef, Langgut, and Sapir-Hen discovered in Timna is that these biblical descriptions are not exaggerated. They are entirely consistent with everything the Bible describes about the reign of King Solomon.
